Full textThis thesis highlights the situation of ideological movements in Syria and debates how to build a new Syria. The principal idea and aim of this work is the distinction between two stages of the political thought in Syria: the stage of constructing the national State and the democratic project after the independence, and the stage of constructing the State/Party or the totalitarian and authoritative project of the Baath party. For that, this study has several approaches. The first relates to the definition of the evolution of ideology and political thought in Syria, and the forms of this definition. The analysis approaches the historical point of view within a framework of relationships between the political ideas and the social and economic development. The second relates to the relationship between ideology and reality, and that gives an analysis of the political social and economic practices

Full textIn France, Franco-Syrian relations tend to be seen simplistically. Public opinion and the media show much interest in Syria not as such, but rather systematically through the prism of regional issues, mainly Lebanese or, to a lesser extent, Israeli-Palestinian. Since the Syrian state became independent, the Franco-Syrian bilateral relations have indeed hardly escaped the impact of interactions between the internal, regional and international power struggles which characterize the Near East. However, do these perceptions not, partially, conceal the real stakes of the Franco-Syrian relations? Their complexity cannot be addressed without assessing the issue both from a long term perspective, such as the old relation of France to the « Levant », and on very short terms, such as the latest pending events in Lebanon. First, we will assess the historical roots of Franco-Syrian relations, without which the current mobilization of numerous French and Syrian territorial representations cannot be analyzed. Then, we will address the complexity of the post-colonial period, with the arising of new structural elements, which have contributed to shaping the present nature of Franco-Syrian geopolitical relations. Finally, after having analyzed the different parameters of the French penetration strategy, we have tried to evaluate its impact in terms of constitution and activation of Franco-Syrian networks in France

Full textIn the first part of this thesis which is devoted to the role and political strength and power of the army, we shall study in turn various main political parties, wether in power or in the opposition, social organizations, and look into the various forms of political power. Through the study of the evolution of the army and its political role we shall discuss one of the principal problem of third world countries, that of the army and the practice of the coup d'Etat, principally the coup of 1970 involving President Assad and then look into the symbolic economic policies. The second part will deal with the study of fundamental ideas with a stress on anthropology and the community. We shall first see the case of minorities and the phenomenon of authoritarianism, discussing the problem of the "alaouites" and of the legitimacy of minorities, as well as the state of dictatorship in the Syrian society. We shall then try and understand the increasing impact of secularity on the muslim society, the various aspects of the Arabic identity and the relationship between the political discourse or ideology and authoritarianism. Finally we shall devote the third part of this thesis to the study of the relationship between politics, religion and symbolism examining in turn aspects of the ideology and communication in the theoretical and political discourse, before looking at the present aspects and situation of the regime
Napolitano, Valentina. "S'engager à Yarmouk : sociologie de la militance palestinienne en Syrie." Paris, EHESS, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015EHES0117.
Full textBased on a fieldwork carried out, between 2008 and 2011, in the Yarmouk camp, Damascus south suburbs, this research aims to understand the processes of militant engagement among the Palestinian refugees in Syria. Leaning on analytical concepts elaborated by the sociology of collective action this dissertation would make an input to the debate on engagement under constrain. The condition of incertitude and subordination linked to the refugee's status, the conflict in the origin country and the coercion of an authoritarian regime in the host country shaped Palestinian militancy in Syria. Throughout this dissertation the engagement issue is addressed from different analytical perspectives. The first part deals with the macro-sociological context which has influenced Palestinian engagement which is represented by the Syrian state. It analyses the Syrian policy toward refugees and Palestinian political actors. The second part adopts a meso-sociological point of view and analyses the mobilisation of Palestinian actors and its evolution according to the local context and the evolutions of the Palestinian national project. The third part proposes a micro-sociological perspective dealing with career of militants issued from different generations

Full textThe Syrian regime is a real enigma for scholars and analysts. In the year 2000, after the arrival to power of the young president Bashar al-Asad, son of the president Hafiz al-Asad, researchers and observers tried to explain the nature of one of the most active political systems in the region. The debate about the nature of the Syrian regime - mainly concerned with the “sectarian/secular” issue - has been going on since the eighties. Some in depth studies focused on the “Syrian question”, revealed the importance of the “familial” dimension for an explanation of the balances inside the system. Other scholars underlined the sectarian factor as the most decisive in determining the decision-making process in the higher echelons of the Syrian State. This thesis tries, through a critical evalutation of the relevant data, together with information available on the ground, to answer the following crucial questions: who rules Syria, and via what mechanisms? What kind of role awaits Syria in the future? And, more precisely, whatever this role may be, what place, if any, will Islam occupy in the future Syria? This is a fundamental question, not just for scholars of Islamic Studies, but also for those who attempt to explain the “Syrian track”, and the role of Islam in it, from their strategic or, sometimes ideological, points of view

Full textThis study connects two fields of research interested in the analysis of the policies in the Middle East, namely the Studies of International Relations, and the Studies of the Middle East. Within this general framework, we propose both macro and micro analysis. First, we carried out a macro analysis of the principal line of the Syrian foreign policy as a process which has resulted from an uninterrupted effort of conciliation between the raison d'Etat and its Arab regional membership known as the raison de la Nation. This effort is implemented to consolidate the legitimacy of the State and to ensure the survival of the regime. Then, we did a micro analysis to analyze the causal dynamics of the decision of the strategic reconstruction in the Syrian foreign policy from the "war to peace" in 1991. This analysis is based on the determinants of the Syrian foreign policy decision as will as to the external and internal context of this decision. Consequently, this study recognizes with regard to the shaping of the behaviour of the foreign policy, the importance of the "state level" and the "sub-state level" as it is recognized in the "level of the system"

This dissertation aims to analyze the processes of change and continuity in Syrian foreign policy. In 2000, Bashar al-Assad ascends to the Syrian’s power after the death of his father Hafez al-Assad, with his promises of carrying out new internal reforms concerning the economic and political apparatus. The changes he had so far were limited, as the aspect of his concentration power, but there was openness to foreign capital and the appointment of new technocrats, with education obtained abroad leading to greater flexibility in relation to the strong military political power that lasted for the government Hafez al-Assad. In addition, the research demonstrated the new international context result from the 11 September (2001), and the change in regional geopolitics with the invasion and occupation of Iraq attacks (2003), catalyzed by the rise of Bashar al-Assad a reorientation of foreign policy while maintaining the political principles of Hafez. The scope of this dissertation also examine how Bashar dealt with new obstacles to Syria imposed by US intervention in the Middle East, as well the influence of Syria politics in the neighboring countries.

Full textAttacks against Lebanon, colonization in the west bank and Gaza, unending Palestinian exile, crisis in Israel: each day, the bombing, battles, attacks, provocations, and repressions multiply. The owderkeg threatens to explode. The history in which the roots of the Arab Israeli conflict are plunged throws a light on its development. June 6, 1982, the Israeli army invaded Lebanon and this event, with its still incalculable consequences, constitutes a turning-point in the history of the region. Interpreted as clearly as possible, this study attempts to discuss the Lebanese imbroglio, as well as its regional and international consequences, which include, among anothers, the discovery and publicizing of the Kahan link, the meeting of the 16th CNP (Palestine national congress) and the Arab Israeli accord of may 17, 1983. An addition to an analysis of the situation, the principal elements of its history are presented: interweaving of projects, strategies, policies, players methods of action, all just as diverse as they are contradictory. Grouped chronologically from 1975 to 1983, these elements relate the genesis of the fifth Arab Israeli war, whose eating away of the region we are still experiencing today

Full textA highly and recurrent belligerent region, the Middle East represents a “South” which is often neglected in the study of Russian foreign policy. However, Moscow’s policy in the Middle East constitutes a particularly relevant indicator of the dynamics, assets, and limits of the Russian power. In our study period (2000-2013) the pursuit of “rational” objectives – the maximization of the state’s security within an international system perceived as anarchic – does not exclude an identity quest which enlightens the way Russia sees itself in the world, often in opposition to the West. Our research thus questions the reinvestment of the Middle East by Vladimir Putin’s Russia by addressing both the domestic and external rationales of Russian policy there. Once elected president in 2000, Vladimir Putin faced the twofold challenge of preventing an ethnic and religious polarization of the Russian population, and of improving Russia’s image in the Arab-Muslim world after the two wars fought in Chechnya. On the other side, the Middle East remains the traditional area for asserting Russia’s power. Through the main security issues in the region, Moscow mainly gauges the Middle East with regard to the West, most notable the United States, while betting, since the world financial crisis and the Georgia war in 2008, an inexorable decline of the American power. Since 2011, the “Arab Spring” uprisings have revealed a conservative by instinct and a cautious in its execution Russian policy, made of maneuvers and compromises if necessary and favoring tactic partnerships to constraining alliances

Full textDuring the last decade, the political use of the Internet and Social Network Sites (SNS) has tremendously increased. Using networks such as Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, Skype, Instagram, etc., has become a must for both political actors and ordinary citizens. Using as a framework the Syrian crisis in 2011, this research will follow the evolution of the political use of SNS in addition to the logics of mobilization and the production of the political speech in these networks. Through the analysis of the Facebook Page the Syrian Revolution 2011, it will question the possibilities that these SNS provide to the users to create mobilizations spaces and collective interaction. Our analysis covered two periods of time: the first one from January 18th to March 14th 2011, and the second from March 15th to April 30th 2011. This will help us better understand the change from one operational mode to another based on the change of the political context and on the degradation of the dramatic situation in Syria. Our research questions the place of the political discussion online and its parts on the creation of collective actions frames. It shows that these frames are activated, adopted and spread in ways that are specific to the social and technical practices provided by the SNS. From this perspective, we hope that our study can bring an original contribution in the analysis of the SNS field. It shows how these networks can be an area for mobilization of information that would help users develops various communication practices
