Abstract:
This thesis is based on a rereading of the sermons of François Le Picart, who was the great preacher of Paris in the first sixteenth century, and who left, thanks to learned impressions, a rich body of his speeches, allowing to examine the genesis of the imagination of a violence conveyed and promoted orally. Le Picart is in fact at the heart of the history of preaching combat from the years 1520-1550 before its invading to the public sphere from 1560. He was a precursor who gave the codes which would authorize in the next years the gradual maturation of a tension of theophanic violence of which men were to be the tools. Through it, the reader can grasp the power of the words which emanated from the preaching, another eloquence of the Renaissance which aimed to put into operation a strategy of indoctrination of the Catholic people, based on the principle of a panic defense of the consciences operating on the bases of updating the doctrine of the Church. From this perspective, Le Picart gave a decisive place to a technique of staging the imaginary of violence that relied on the use of mental paintings that he sought to project into the psyche of his listeners. This strategy was a rhetorical device capable of arousing, through pathos, an anguish that was eschatological in the tension inherent in sermons dramatically pitting zealous love for God against the ever-increasing sin of man. Picart was a prophet, who not only spoke for God and through God but also worked the imagination of the faithful by infusing in them a "speaking of God", putting them in a condition, after 1560, to become warriors of God. The hell that he described which awaiting heretics at the time of their death would then come to earth

McCrea, Patrick Sean. "Grand Illusions; Elusive Facts| The Survival of Regional Languages in France Despite 'Their Programmed Demise'| Picard in Picardy and Provencal in Provence." Thesis, Tulane University, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10608347.

Abstract:

This dissertation studies the survival, or resistance, of regional languages in France through the use of two case studies: Picard in Picardy and Provençal in Provence. In order to create the French nation, the revolutionaries of 1789 decided upon the necessity of political unity. In order to facilitate, or to create, this unity, the cultural provinces were abolished and generic départements were created in their stead. However, when political unity did not occur immediately after the territorial change, the revolutionaries determined that national unity, both political and cultural, would be attained through the imposition of the French language. It was thus language that was deemed to be the greatest separating factor of the French at this period. In 1794, Abbé Grégoire called for the “programmed demise” of the regional languages through education in and of French. While this program was not officially enacted until the Third Republic (1870–1914), due to numerous factors, these languages were supposed to have died long ago. While their numbers of speakers have decreased, and there are no longer any monolingual regional language speakers, they still exist. How is this fact possible? Despite explanations attributed to enduring diglossia, the extended process of language shift or time itself, this study focuses on regional identity and posits that the durable bond between regional identity and language is the explanation.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis investigates a number of phonological phenomena in Picard, a Gallo-Romance dialect spoken France: Across-Word Regressive Assimilation and its variation patterns, and the domain-sensitive strategies that the language employs in the Resolution of Vocalic Hiatus (i.e. Semivocalization, Vowel Elision and Heterosyllabification). More generally, the thesis is about "variation" in its broadest sense. It explores variation that occurs within a single prosodic domain as well as the type of variation that operates across domains; while the former is variable and triggered by linguistic and extralinguistic factors (and is thus the subject of sociolinguistic investigation), the latter is invariable and strictly determined by domains. For the analysis of these two types of "variation", I adopt the framework of Optimality Theory. One of the advantages of this framework is that it allows us to account for domain-driven and sociolinguistic variation within a language by means of a single grammar. In the context of domain-sensitive phenomena, this can be accomplished by the decomposition of constraints into their domain-specific counterparts, each of which may be ranked independently within a single grammar to yield the alternations observed across domains. Based on this line of research and influenced by insights from Prosodic Phonology, I propose an approach to the decomposition of constraints in which only prosodic domains may serve for constraint specification. I argue that this is advantageous because it constrains the grammar by imposing limitations on the types of domains that may be subject to decomposition, and captures Prosodic Phonology's view that the interface between phonology and morphosyntax must be indirect, that is, mediated by domains from the prosodic hierarchy. In the context of variation triggered by linguistic and extralinguistic factors, I argue that variable patterns are best analyzed as the result of crucial nonranking of constraints. A posit

Abstract:
Through the example of the Picard language I explore the phonological mechanisms which ensure dialectal cohesion within a language, in the framework of Optimality Theory and Correspondence Theory. The core part of my research deals with palatalization of velar stops, which induces a complex dialectal alternation in Picard. I first examine the extralinguistic factors of cohesion, then I propose an OT analysis based upon the hypothesis of generative dialectology: dialectal cohesion is due to the existence of common underlying forms. This approach, however, fails to explain certain cases of opacity. In the framework of Correspondence Theory, I propose a new type of correspondence between varieties in contact. Dialectal cohesion is grounded in both perception and production. I also test this approach in a surface-only phonology to solve another case of variation in Picard: vowel-zero alternation

Abstract:
The literary heritage of Picard can reach as many as a hundred plays and about six novels. He deals with the social, political and religious problems of his time, like Molière, who seems to be the first source of inspiration for our playwright. In his Mémoires, Alexandre Dumas describes Louis-Benoît Picard as "the little Moliere of the nineteenth century or the modern Moliere". This rapprochement seems more or less debatable insofar as the traces of this "little Moliere" are rare today and it is now completely forgotten in Literary History. Between this assertion of Dumas and the mediocre place occupied by our dramatist in the history of the theater, two explanations could be envisaged. The first is that the revolutionary period in which Louis-Benoît Picard lived has been overloaded historically and critics who are interested in this period place more importance on historical events than on literary productions, Most of the writers of this period have fallen into oblivion. The second explanation belongs to Picard's literary productions themselves, represented as repetitive, conventional, and far from original

Abstract:
The introduction delineates the field of researches (the area of the picard dialect), the time (from the twelfth to the sixteenth century), the matter (all literary genres, religious and lay legislations and judiciary documents). The whole work is divided into four main chapters. Chapter one tries to dispel any confusion between taverns, wine-shops, inns and hostelries. To the retailing of wine the tavern adds the drinking of it on the premises, then its food function grows by adding bread, cheese, herring, grilled-meat and tripe (so to speak "revelry") to wine. It is the feasting centre and a primary place in the life of brotherhoods and guilds. Yet, as a rule, the tavern will not afford food. When it strays from this customary way it is hardly to be distinguished from a wine-shop. Originally the latter is but drinking-place in which "goudale" is the main thing. Then wine is found there, then meals can be had and rooms at last, which makes the place a rival for the inn and the "oste bourgeois". The hostelry affords its stable, and it accommodates well-to-do people. Chapter two examines tavern sites and structures through their distinctive features (ring foliage, banners), then their sign-boards. After that we see the advanced posts and out-buil dings ("buffet," "achinte," "cortil"), the inner space and its sub-structures (cellars and "boves"), the upper floor (with "solier" and upper chamber) and the ground floor ("bouge" and lower chamber). A longing for intimacy is to be seen in the use of the hearth and a floor strewn with rushes, while public closets lead us to analyse public behaviour in towns. Chapter three deals with fraud, classified and related to ancient tradition. Christianity, however, sets its stamp upon modern legislation. Two significant figures are studied through their evolutions : the isaic cliche "there is water in your wine" and the mosaic law about honest weights and measures. The last chapter deals with dice at the tavern. It develops a couple af notions: the first one about the man stripped of his clothes by the publican, the second one about the link that people, during the middle ages, felt to exist between dice an demon. The tavern, there, assumes metaphysical proportions. The conclusion rests on antithetic and complementary connections between tavern and church

Abstract:
We study the singularities of the Drinfeld-Lafforgue-Vinberg compactification of the moduli stack of G-bundles on a smooth projective curve for a reductive group G. The study of these compactifications was initiated by V. Drinfeld (for G=GL_2) and continued by L. Lafforgue (for G=GL_n) in their work on the Langlands correspondence for function fields; unlike the work of Drinfeld and Lafforgue, however, we focus on questions about the singularities of these compactifications which arise naturally in the geometric Langlands program. A definition of the compactification for a general reductive group G is also due to Drinfeld (unpublished) and relies on the Vinberg semigroup of G; this case will be dealt with in the forthcoming work [Sch]. In the present work we focus on the case G=SL_2. In this case the compactification can alternatively be viewed as a canonical one-parameter degeneration of the moduli space of SL_2-bundles. We study the singularities of this one-parameter degeneration via the weight-monodromy theory of the associated nearby cycles construction: We give an explicit description of the nearby cycles sheaf together with its monodromy action in terms of certain novel perverse sheaves which we call "Picard-Lefschetz oscillators", and then use this description to determine the intersection cohomology sheaf and other invariants of the singularities. Our proofs rely on the construction of certain local models for the one-parameter degeneration which themselves form one-parameter families of spaces which are factorizable in the sense of Beilinson and Drinfeld. We also include a first application on the level of functions.

Abstract:
Let k be any field. In this Ph.D. dissertation we study the Picard group of the (smooth connected) unipotent k-algebraic groups. As every unipotent algebraic group is an iterated extension of forms of the additive group, we will study the Picard group of the forms of the additive group. In fact we study the Picard group of forms of the additive group and the affine line simultaneously using a geometric method. We obtain anexplicit upper bound on the torsion of the Picard group of the forms of the affine line and their regular completion, and a sufficient condition for the Picard group of a form of the affine line to be nontrivial. We also give examples of nontrivial forms of the affine line with trivial Picard groups. In general, a unipotent k-algebraic group is a form of the affine n-space. In order to study the Picard group of a form X of the affine n-space with a geometric method, we define a "restricted" Picard functor; we show that if X admits a regular completion then the "restricted" Picard functor is representable by a unipotent k-algebraic group (smooth, not necessarly connected). With this "restricted" Picard functor and geometric arguments we show that the Picard group of a unirational form of the affine n-space is finite. Moreover we generalise a result of B. Totaro: if k is separablyclosed and if the Picard group of a unipotent k-algebraic group is nontrivial then it admits a nontrivial extension by the multiplicative group

Abstract:
A lot of factors contribute to modelling a society’s cultural wealth. In this diversity, we include games, and more especially traditional games. Indeed, these hold the norms and values of the society which preserved them. In order to understand the significance of the North of France’s game culture, we led a detailed survey of 108 traditionnal games played in the “picard” linguistic space, and of 2154 exploitable questionnaires filled in by players. In order to do this, we emphasized and analyzed the internal logic traits of the traditional games belonging to the six families we have constituted. With the help of statistical crossings, we showed the interdependence of the different internal logic traits which take into account the players and the relationship they have with space, others, time and objects. While putting in relation the internal logic results with the external logic ones, we brought out the regional game culture’s significant expression. These significations take meaning through the role of feasts, carnivals, giants, fairs, fairs, taverns, animals, bets, material culture and the players’ social mix. Thus, we showed how traditional games participate in the interpretation of the reality while structuring the world and the operating thought of individuals from the north of France. This narrow link between the traditional games’ and Northern culture’s features, confers to these same games a fundamental role in the socialisation of the Nord-Pas-de –Calais and Picardie actors. Stating this makes it possible to establish that traditional games are witnesses and agents of the society which feeds them; they are its social mirror, which reflects all of society’s identity and cultural attributes

Abstract:
Picard as a discrete idiom calls in question the very notion of language or dialect, and the delimitation of varieties. We first attempt to isolate within various theories (from dialectology to creolistics) a mode of being of languages as sociolinguistic realities, linked with a focussing of languages by communities for identity ends. Then we show in an attempt to diachronic sociolinguistics how Picard has tended to constitute an autonomous idiom through the history of diglosay, a process which has not been achieved until now. The notion of language, viewed as a "normative referential", is linked, in a situation of contact or bi-polar variation, with the operations of categorization by speakers and groups, in complex reference with purely linguistic facts, it mean, linguistic constraints. A central place is devoted to morphology in idiomatic categorization and a corpus is devised, the social characteristics and transcription method of which are accurately analyzed. The observation of morphology (verbs and articles) enables to characterize the "Picard speech" as a practice of autonomizing and focussing, always partial, yet not insignificant nor incoherent. The notion of normative referential accounts for the relative linguistic pertinence of the expression "le Picard"

Abstract:
Picard's theorem states that a non-constant function which is meromorphic in the complex plane C omits at most two values of the extended complex plane C*. A Picard set for a family of functions F is a subset E of the plane such that every transcendental f in F takes every value of C*, with at most two exceptions, infinitely often in C-E. If f is transcendental and meromorphic in the plane, then: (i) [Hayman and others] if N is a positive integer, f^Nf' takes all finite non-zero values infinitely often; (ii) [Hayman] either f takes every finite value infinitely often, or each derivative f^(k) takes every finite non-zero value infinitely often. We can seek analogues of Picard sets ie subsets E of the plane and an associated family of functions F, such that (for case (i)) f^Nf' takes all finite non-zero values infinitely often in C-E, for all f in F. Similarly for case (ii). In this thesis we improve or extend the results previously known, both for Picard sets proper and for the analogous cases (i) and (ii) mentioned above, when the family of functions F consists of meromorphic functions which have deficient poles (in the sense of Nevanlinna).

Natural products are a rich source of medicinally important molecules. Monoterpene indole alkaloids from plants are an especially important source of therapeutic molecules. Due to the complexity of these molecules, biosynthesis of derivatives is an attractive way of obtaining molecules with potentially new or improved functionality. The rational design of mutants with altered/expanded substrate scope is an important step in engineering organisms to produce such compounds. In monoterpene indole alkaloid biosynthesis, the enzyme strictosidine synthase catalyzes the first committed reaction. This reaction is a Pictet-Spengler coupling between tryptamine and secologanin and produces the biosynthetic intermediate strictosidine, common to all monoterpene indole alkaloids. To better understand the structural features that impart binding selectivity, crystallization studies of this enzyme were performed. The native enzyme and several interesting mutants were studied; co-crystallization experiments with inhibitors and substrates were also performed. Diffraction quality crystals of the native enzyme were obtained following optimization by grid screening, additive screens, and macroseeding. Data on the optimized crystals was collected at the Argonne National Labs synchrotron radiation source. In addition to monoterpene indole alkaloids, the benzylisoquinoline alkaloids are another class of medicinally important plant derived natural products. In a reaction analogous to that catalyzed by strictosidine synthase, the first committed step of benzylisoquinoline biosynthesis is a Pictet-Spengler reaction between 4-hydroxyphenylactetaldehyde and dopamine, catalyzed by the enzyme norcoclaurine synthase. Two different forms of this enzyme have been identified, neither of which shows any homology to strictosidine synthase.
(cont.) Structural information for these enzymes could provide general structural features required for enzymatic Pictet-Spengler reactions. Before crystallization, the enzymes were expressed and tested for activity. Once active preparations of protein were available, crystallization studies were performed and crystals were obtained.

Abstract:
Picard varieties are Shimura varieties associated to the group of unitary similitudes of an hermitian space of dimension 3 over a CM eld. They parametrize isomorphism classes of abelian varieties with some additional data. In particular, there exists a universal abelian variety over a Picard variety and more generally Kuga-Sato families. Cohomology groups are attached to these varieties. Automorphic representations can be found in cohomology groups, more precisely in interior cohomology groups. Following Langlands' program, these representations correspond conjecturally to motives. The main result of this thesis is the construction of direct factors of the interior motive of certain Kuga-Sato families over a Picard variety, meaning a motivic analogue of interior cohomology. To prove this, we study the weights of the boundary motive of such families. We deduce from this the existence of a motive associated to certain automorphic representations

(. . . /. . . )
The first aim of this work is to provide ʺrealʺ proofs of the Big Picard Theorem and of a related theorem of Myung Kwack. By ʺreal" we mean : without using complex analysis, especially that part relying on the Cauchy Theorem. This program is easily carried out with the help of a theorem of J. Sacks and K. Uhlenbeck and a huge generalization of the Schwarz-Pick Lemma of classical function theory, namely the Schwarz-Yau Lemma. The main result so acheved is the following real version of Kwack’s theorem. Sigismondi, Costantino. "High precision ground-based measurements of solar diameter in support of Picard mission." Nice, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011NICE4059.

Full text
Abstract:
The theme of the measurement of the solar diameter is introduced in the wider framework of solar variability, and, consequently of the influence of the Sun upon the Earth’s climate. It is possible to measure the solar diameter with an accuracy enough good for studies on climate changes and irradiation variations using ancient data on total eclipses. This would permit to extend the knowledge of the solar luminosity back to three centuries, through the knowledge of the parameter W=dlogL/dLogR. The method of eclipses and Baily beads is widely discussed, and a significant improvement with respect to the last 40 years, has been obtained by reconstructing the Limb Darkening Function from the Baily’s bead light curve, and the search of its inflexion point. The case of the last annular eclipse (Jan 15, 2010) has been studied in more detail, while the atlas of Baily’s beads has bee published with all the observations made worldwide by IOTA members, along with an analysis of the solar diameter during the eclipse of 2006. The work of this thesis has been developed during the transition between the photographic atlas of the lunar limb published by Watts in 1963 and corrected in the following decades by thousands observations, and the laser-altimeter map made by the Kaguya lunar probe and published in November 2009. The other method for the accurate measurement of the solar diameter alternative to the Picard/Picard-sol mission is the drift-scan method user either by the solar astrolabes either larger telescope. The observatories of Locarno and Paris have started an observational program of the Sun with this method with encouraging results. For the first time an image motion of the whole Sun has been detected over frequencies of 1/100 Hz. This may start explain the puzzling results of the observational campaigns made in Greenwich and Rome from 1850 to 1955. This sub-Hertz activity of the atmospheric seeing is another fundamental achievement in this research field. A giant pinhole telescope as the meridian line of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Rome, permits to introduce almost all the arguments of classical astrometry presented in this thesis. In this consists the didactic outreach as a complement of this thesis

Full text
Abstract:
As groundwater models are being used increasingly in the area of resource allocation, there has been an increase in the level of complexity in an attempt to capture heterogeneity, complex geometries and detail in interaction between the model domain and the outside hydraulic influences. As models strive to represent the real world in ever increasing detail, there is a strong likelihood that the boundary conditions will become nonlinear. Nonlinearities exist in the groundwater flow equation even in simple models when watertable (unconfined) conditions are simulated. This thesis is concerned with how these nonlinearities are treated numerically, with particular focus on the MODFLOW groundwater flow software and the nonlinear nature of the unconfined condition simulation. One of the limitations of MODFLOW is that it employs a first order fixed point iterative scheme to linearise the nonlinear system that arises as a result of the finite difference discretisation process, which is well known to offer slow convergence rates for highly nonlinear problems. However, Newton's method can achieve quadratic convergence and is more effective at dealing with higher levels of nonlinearity. Consequently, the main objective of this research is to investigate the inclusion of Newton's method to the suite of computational tools in MODFLOW to enhance its flexibility in dealing with the increasing complexity of real world problems, as well as providing a more competitive and efficient solution methodology. Furthermore, the underpinning linear iterative solvers that MODFLOW currently utilises are targeted at symmetric systems and a consequence of using Newton's method would be the requirement to solve non-symmetric Jacobian systems. Therefore, another important aspect of this work is to investigate linear iterative solution techniques that handle such systems, including the newer Krylov style solvers GMRES and BiCGSTAB. To achieve these objectives a number of simple benchmark problems involving nonlinearities through the simulation of unconfined conditions were established to compare the computational performance of the existing MODFLOW solvers to the new solution strategies investigated here. One of the highlights of these comparisons was that Newton's method when combined with an appropriately preconditioned Krylov solver was on average greater than 40% more CPU time efficient than the Picard based solution techniques. Furthermore, a significant amount of this time saving came from the reduction in the number of nonlinear iterations due to the quadratic nature of Newton's method. It was also found that Newton's method benefited more from improved initial conditions than Picard's method. Of all the linear iterative solvers tested, GMRES required the least amount of computational effort. While the Newton method involves more complexity in its implementation, this should not be interpreted as prohibitive in its application. The results here show that the extra work does result in performance increase, and thus the effort is certainly worth it.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT - HYMENOPTERA STING ALLERGY IN DOGS - Although its prevalence is still not known in Portugal, every year dogs are stung by hymenoptera and show allergic reactions. To our knowledge, there are only a couple of studies regarding hymenoptera allergy and its diagnosis in dogs. In human patients, the use of intradermal tests is both safe and sensitive and results are sometimes supported by in vitro tests. In this work, firstly, we performed surveys in veterinary centres in order to gather as much information as possible about this allergy in Portugal. We have concluded that most hymenoptera stings happen in the spring/summer season; that usually the owners don’t recognise the insect which causes the allergy; that young adult dogs living outside are more often stung and that this occurs mainly on the face. It also seems there is no breed predisposition for this allergy. We also found that angioedema is the most reported clinical sign and that corticosteroids are often used to treat this allergy. Interestingly, owners are not given any instructions on how to prevent the following sting. The regions with higher density of Apis melífera in Portugal did not relate with an increase number of dogs stung (p>0,05). In the second part of this work, intradermal tests using three distinct venoms (Apis melífera, Vespula spp. and Polistes spp.) were performed to evaluate both the diagnostic yield and test safety. As far as we know, the protocol used in this study was adapted from human sequential and simultaneous protocols and it was, for the first time, used in dogs. The results revealed that intradermal testing is both efficient and safe to use in dogs and helpful in the diagnosis of hymenoptera stings in allergic animals. The study also reveals that although dogs did react to the main sting suspect, some of them also tend to be positive to other venoms. It’s yet to be evaluated, in dogs, what kind of role cross-reactivity plays in this type of tests. Dogs have positively reacted to 0,01 a 1 μg/ml of venom concentration intervals. The control group hasn’t shown any reaction to these concentrations. Further investigations in dogs with serological testing will allow studying the presence and nature of cross-reactivity. It is hoped that our research in hymenoptera allergy in dogs will improve the understanding of the disease and allows developments in both diagnosis and management options, particularly the use of specific venom immunotherapy as prevention.
