Carmel-Veilleux, Tenessee.

Abstract:

Yannakis, Donna. "Violence and the other in the novels of Carmel Bird." Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 2019. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/2224.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis argues that throughout her fictional work, Carmel Bird interrogates multiple forms of violence against the gendered and racialised other. Using Judith Butler’s theories of gender performativity and the discursive construction of race, the thesis shows how these constructions not only inform or incite violence against the other, but are inherently violent in themselves. To chart these multiple forms of violence, the thesis uses Slavoj Žižek’s delineation of a triumvirate of violence: symbolic, systemic and subjective violence. He describes subjective violence as the most visible, physical violence of an actor or actors against an other. He determines that this subjective violence is only one part of a trinity of violence that includes two forms of more insidious, invisible violence – symbolic and systemic violence. Žižek argues that the symbolic violence of language and discourse and the systemic violence of political, economic and social systems inform, incite and produce subjective violence. With recourse to Butler and Žižek, the thesis demonstrates this argument by examining how Bird uses intertextuality, landscapes of surface and depth, non-traditional narrative strategies, Gothicism and irony in the novels Cherry Ripe (1985), The Bluebird Café (1990), The White Garden (1995), Red Shoes (1998), Cape Grimm (2004), Child of the Twilight (2010) and Family Skeleton (2016) to expose the ways these multiple forms of violence intersect and inform one another. Chapter One argues that Cherry Ripe uses intertextuality to show how the reiterative power of discourse enacts a symbolic violence by producing normative models of femininity. This symbolic violence, in turn, produces the systemic violence of female shame when women fail to adhere to those normative models. Chapter Two examines the construction of landscape in The Bluebird Café to argue that the novel interrogates the elision of the systemic and subjective violence against the convict and Aboriginal other in historical and cultural discourses. It additionally argues that this elision, alongside Australian discursive myth-making, constitutes an ongoing symbolic violence against the other. Chapter Three returns to the use of intertextuality in The White Garden. The novel’s invocation of an institutional scandal of abuse, hagiography and fairy-tales reveals the ways symbolic violence in these discourses inform the systemic and subjective violence against the female body and sexuality. Chapter Four examines the pre-occupation with narration and narrative strategy in Red Shoes to argue that narration and narrative control dictates who can speak and whose stories can be told. It particularly interrogates the ways narration enacts a symbolic violence by silencing the female voice and female stories. It goes on to demonstrate how these silences allow for systemic and subjective violence against women and children. Chapter Five focusses on the use of Gothic conventions and tropes in Cape Grimm to argue that the novel continues Bird’s concern with the elision of colonial, subjective violence against Aboriginal Australians and how that violence continues to haunt the present in the form of systemic violence against the indigenous population. It also argues that the construction of white belonging in Australia performs a symbolic violence in its attempts to shore up a sense of white indigeneity. Chapter Five explores Bird’s characteristic irony in Child of the Twilight to argue that the novel interrogates notions of origin, authenticity and faith to demonstrate the symbolic violence of human belief systems. The thesis concludes by examining the ways in which the symbolic, systemic and subjective violence invoked in these novels intersect with and inform the violence in Bird’s latest novel Family Skeleton.

NATOUR, MIRAS. "Social identity conflict in Druzes living in Carmel and Golan." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10281/103047.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis analyzes the complexity of social identity in two groups of Druze living in separate territories in Israel: Mount Carmel in the North West of the country, and Golan heights in the North East, at the border with Syria. The two groups, belonging to the same religious minority, are different from an historical, political, and social point of view. Druze, Arab, Israeli, and Syrian identities play different roles in the two groups – hence the complexity. These different identities may be in conflict with each other. The main hypotheses are that this identity conflict is significantly different in Carmel than in the Golan; and that it may be related in different ways to psychological dimensions such as optimism, collective self-esteem, and experiences of guilt and shame. The theoretical background of this thesis is based on three central theories: optimal distinctiveness (Brewer, 1991); social identity complexity (Roccas and Brewer, 2002); and bicultural identity integration (Benet-Martinez, 2002). The advantage of these theories is that they explain a large proportion of the complexity of social identity; however, these theories emerge in research as limited in conflictual contexts such as the Arab –Israeli conflict. The main effect in multiple identification process is the relation between oppositional and compatible social identification. As a consequence, individuals aim to construct a "third" social identity defined by the integration between both original identities: e.g. Druze/Arabic or Druze/Israeli or Druze/Syrian. This process involves values and cultural aspects. The thesis uses the above theories to explain the complexity of the "third" identity of the Druze. Furthermore, it investigates the ways in which the political conflict between Israel and Arab countries influences the "third' identity of the Druze. In a first step the thesis reconstruct the ecological contest: the historic, economic, religious, cultural factors characterizing the two groups of Druzes. The research develop in two phases: A first explorative inquiry with interviews to key persons in Carmel and in Golan with the aim of a depth knowledge of the topic. On this basis in the second phase the research applied 7 scales to a balanced sample of 196 subjects : 102 in Golan, 94 in Carmel; 46% male, 54% female. The methodology is a mixed one – qualitative and quantitative – on the idea that the argument of thesis, with his multi faced dimensions, requires non only quantitative data but both analysis of discourses and statistics. From the categorial content analysis of the transcription of interviews three principal groups of categories emerges: specific of Golan, specific of Carmel and common to both groups. For the Golani subjects the main topics are the separation from Syria with the consequent discontinuations, loss of Syrian culture and tradition and lack of citizenship. For the Carmeli subjects the main topics are military service law, feeling of treason and social assimilation. In addition, there are a common topics that emerge from both group as historical aspects, cultural invention economical aspect and uncertainly future. The most important results of the quantitative research demonstrate first of all that in both groups the Druze identities remain the strongest one. In Golan emerge as salient a Druze/Syrian as third identity . In Carmel emerge with the same relevance the Druze/Arabic and Druze/Israeli identity: as consequence , in Carmel emerge more relevant conflict between these "third" identities. In addition , the results demonstrate the positive correlation between the social identity conflict and lack of optimism, sense of guilt and shame. Consequently , these psychological dimensions are more problematic in Carmel than in Golan. The psychological well being, highlighted from the explored psychological dimensions, emerge as better in Golan even if the conditions of life are worse. In addition, the integration of Carmel Druzes in Israel underline the contradiction between economic benefits and the social identity conflict

Dufour, Jean-Marc. Paris 4, 1999. http://www.theses.fr/1999PA040134.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis presents the unpublished biography of the Aragonese friar Roque Alberto Faci (1684-1774), together with the analysis of his intellectual production. Almost fifty printed religious-themed works that resulted in diverse nature writings (biographies, Teresian apostolate, bibliographies, hagiographies, sermons…), with diverse pretensions. All this taking into account various factors (economic, intellectual, cultural and political) that point to why the process of Enlightenment was defined, how its ideals clashed with the majority culture of the catholic tradition and how the paths were modified from religious sentiment. In addition, in order to understand the life and work of the carmelite Roque Alberto Faci through constant features and regularities that defined both the friar and the religious family in which he incardinated, this thesis recovers, orders, understands and exposes the meaning of the history and development of the Order of Carmen from several centuries ago. Two chapters emerge from these claims. One of them exposes the most objective study that exists about the bases of the expansion of the Order in Aragon, from the first settlements in the thirteenth century, to the last house founded in 1673. Next to it, the succession of a whole political history of organizational divisions that were related to the conjunctures of social and economic powers of each moment, affecting the process in different ways. The other contains the only historiographic study that reflects five centuries of written production by the Carmelite family. The erudition of its members, the diverse controversies that their writings generated in each context, the influence that exerted among its members, and the complex socio-cultural structure of the Europe of these centuries, above all, from the renovating tendencies that they began to gestate in the seventeenth century and culminated under the definition of the Enlightenment in the eighteenth century. With the set, we have identified the professional and intellectual career of Roque Albert Faci, the various social plots in which he was found, the gap he occupied in eighteenth-century Zaragoza and the most reliable description of the friar to date.

Abstract:
The video camera, as a main tool of research, enabled to study carmelites daily life into a French Carmel. Aspects such as communal or solitary, materials or rituals, revealed the main features unique to the monacal life organisation. The prescriptions coming from the Rule and the Constitutions have a main influence on carmelites, visible into mental and behavioural habitus. The filmic description of actions and their detailed analysis has shown that the changeover between the religious to the non religious, the solitary to the communal is being accomplished as a fluid and harmonious continuity. All the practical conditions aim, in the daily monk's life, to an encounter with God. The seven films give an insight into essential elements of the monastic life as well as discreet evidences of the carmelitan spirituality

Abstract:
In the State of Israel, relationships between Palestinian and Jewish population are a controversial issue that provokes a great social expectation. A taboo that grew especially strong in the context of the conflict of the summer of 2014. Through the study of everyday experiences of Palestinian-Jewish couples that live in Haifa, I will try to show how the social perceptions and reactions about these couples are microcosms of the dynamics of the current Israeli society. To explain why these relationships are so problematic in the country, this thesis analyze the historical and political context of the region, the social and spatial segregation in the country, the legal system and the regulation of the marriages, the identitarian discourse building processes and the gender relationships, amongst other aspects. In this context, the Palestinian-Jewish couples should face difficulties and limitations, so they will need to develop several strategies to confront them. The ethnographic data collected in the fieldwork, the conceptual analysys of the terms used in the country to define the Israeli population and another complementary sources will allow to present a picture of the social, legal and political reality of the State of Israel

Abstract:
More than any other field of religious art, stained-glass window making took full advantage of the re-discovery of the middle ages, of its artistic expressions as well as of the rehabilitation of catholic faith, in Le Mans, this phenomenon had a great impact: more than ten manufactories traded with this art. The agitation of the artistic and archaeological environment in Le Mans quickly reached the religious communities. As the congregation of Sainte-Croix, the Carmelite nuns from Le Mans began then to set up in the technical, artistic and spiritual venture of glass painting in 1853. Created out of necessity, the office of stained-glass windows of the Carmelite order from Le Mans developed with conviction and did not last to become the most important factory of Sarthe making glass painting : the most important according to the number of its employees (fifty) and its international success, in the U. S. A. And particularly at Notre-Dame university, South-Bend, Indiana. Finally, it was the most important thanks to the personality of its colleagues including Overbeck, the founder of the nazarene movement

Richard, Philippe. "L’écriture de l’abandon : esthétique carmélitaine de l’œuvre romanesque de Georges Bernanos." Thesis, Paris 4, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013PA040116.

Full text
Abstract:
Intrinsically polyphonic, Bernanos’ novels seem to be established in a Carmelite world and develop a mystic intuition, from the experience to the creation of a writing of the abandonment. The novelist wishes to understand and calm the metaphysical questions of his century. The purpose is to create an embodied rhetoric and its relationship to the world. A theological aesthetics is also established on an ethics of the sweetness. To rewrite the dark night or to represent the spiritual rise : it is a question of creating a singular, humble and sublime language who represents the idea of abandonment of God and abandonment to God

Abstract:
The establishment of a UNESCO Biosphere indicates a shift from traditional conservation of individual areas towards a more regional approach and an inclusive planning and management regime. This study sets out to investigate the effects of the Biosphere Reserve designation in Mount Carmel, Israel, with special regard to settlement development and stakeholder management. The implications of the Biosphere Reserve designation have been explored through GIS analysis, using LANDSAT satellite data, and through interviews, observations and participatory checking. The empirical findings were analysed in relation to the Biosphere Reserve Statutory Framework, and to theories on territorialisation, space production and participatory planning. The findings suggest that the Biosphere Reserve designation have had very limited effects in the case of Mount Carmel. Settlements have continued to expand into protected areas, and there is no organised structure for stakeholder participation. This study underlines the value of considering context and history in the establishment of protected areas, and the importance of establishing the Biosphere Reserve concept among the different stakeholders.

Abstract:

Abstract:

During the season 2013/14 a research was done in an orchard belonging to Persol S.A., located in Punitaqui, Coquimbo Region, Chile. (30 ° 48 '51'' S; 71 ° 18' 10.47'' W). The objective was to determine the effect of different concentrations of thidiazuron on increasing fruit set in 'Nonpareil' and 'Carmel' almonds, either applied at pink stage or at petal fall. An experiment was performed for each variety. 'Nonpareil' was analyzed as a randomized block design with 5 replications per treatment. Each block corresponds to 5 adult trees, homogeneous vigor and similarly located with respect to pollinizers. 'Carmel' was analyzed in a completely randomized design, since there is no pollinizer in the row. The experimental unit was a tree. In each tree two years old branches were randomly selected to evaluate fruit set. Fruit per spur was evaluated at: 15 and 30 days after full bloom (DAFB). Flower quality, yield, yield efficiency, based on cm-2 of trunk cross sectional area (TCSA) and PARi and quality of harvested almonds were also evaluated. Apparently, flower quality and pollination were not limiting for yield. Thidiazuron sprays at pink stage or petal fall did not increase fruit set in any of the concentrations used. Yield efficiency was a positive linear function of crop load, expressed as fruits/cm2 of TCSA and fruits/PARi. Almond weight was not affected by crop load Finally, 10 mg·L-1 of TDZ application at petal fall on 'Nonpareil', increased seed weight.

Abstract:
David Kroll, Director of the Preservation Studio at RATIO Architects, Inc. in Indianapolis, approached me in September of 2007 about a project. The Eli Lilly Farm in Carmel, Indiana was in danger of demolition. The property was sold to a development company who was proposing an idea for over 1000 homes as a part of a "Master Planned Community" to be built on 335 acres of land. One of the stipulations of this sale was that the Conner Prairie Living History Museum had first right of refusal on any of the buildings from the property. The idea had been brought up to relocate a couple of the buildings on the farm to save them from demolition. I decided to document the farm so that future generations could know what used to exist there. That idea developed into my current topic: "A Study of the Relocation of the Eli Lilly Farm Office with adaptive use Options and Rehabilitation Recommendations."

Abstract:

Paris, EHESS, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015EHES0169.

Full text
Abstract:
Teresa de Los Andes' example appears as being an appropriate medium to analyze the construction of sanctity as well as the last years of a successful canonization process. My thesis focuses on three aspects of her sanctity. First, her experience and elaboration of ar early spiritual life based on a desire of sanctity and on the fulfilment of her religious vocatiorn by entering the Carmelite order. This explains some key points of her biography : her body and sensitive experiences (including mortification), her intense writing activity and her early death. Secondly, the first Chilean saint's writings, which include Teresa's life from the craddk to the grave. These are so to say self-hagiography writings that not only describe her life buv also make up for her journey towards holiness. Indeed, it later became a cornerstone of the canonization case. Finally, the social fabrication of sanctity. The analysis of the emergence oc her reputation for holiness points out a series of coordinated actions led by her family, her spiritual directors and the Carmelites of the Andes in order to give birth to a long lasting holy character. The Chilean Church's proclamation of Sister Teresa as a symbol of "national reconciliation" during the last years of the dictatorship makes one wonder about the connection between this turbulent context and the success of the canonization case that made Sister Teresa "A saint for Chile"

Kalb, Jonas. "Essays on cartel policy with endogenous cartel size." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/16296.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the role of endogenous size processes in the stability and price setting decisions of cartels. Chapter One analyses how the stability of cartels de- pends on the level of horizontal product differentiation and on costs of collusion under the premise that a cartel can consist of less than all firms in an industry. It is shown that when the size of the cartel is determined endogenously, it is possible that increased costs of collusion make a cartel more stable. Chapter Two analyses how the price setting of firms in collusive industries is affected by three different penalty regimes: i) profits, ii) overcharge, and iii) revenue based penalties. It is found that penalties influence price setting in two ways: directly, by affecting the industry price for a given cartel size and indirectly by affecting cartel size and thereby the price charged. When the penalties are equally tough, in the sense that they deter cartels over the same group of products, over- charge based penalties always lead to the lowest prices, followed by prices computed under profits based penalties and then revenue based penalties. For very few combinations of product differentiation and market size, revenue based penalties lead to lower prices than profits based penalties. Finally, Chapter Three presents a model in which collusive stability is analysed in a dynamic setting of free entry, exit and mergers. Contrary to the previous literature it shows that stable and profitable collusion is possible under free entry, without the need for cartels to play entry deterring strategies. Furthermore, the empirical evidence that a breakdown of collusion can lead to increased merger activity is replicated. An additional contribution of this model is that it defines a new notion of a long run sustainable competitive market size under merger and entry.

Abstract:
The study is divided into 3 parts. The first part focuses on the adaptation of thee short story for the opera and the screen. Based more secularly on the four films shot in 1983, it shows several possible solutions to the different stages of the development of a film: literary adaptation, visual adaptation, musical adaptation and adaptation to the screen. The second part is a didactic approach structured around sequences on the teaching of image, short story and their study of French. A far as official instructions and research on the teaching of language are concerned, what place could be given to "Carmen"? How to build a progressive learning process? How to integrate a study of the adaptation into a reading and what link could be established with the construction of the meaning? The third part is an historical and comparative approach. It gives the results of a survey conducted in the film libraries, on all the films (from the silent ones) on the film-directors, the actors and the actresses involved in a Carmen adaptation. It analyses an example of intertextuality ("The woman and the puppet") and the exhibition "Seita, photo gitanes". Conclusion on the character of Carmen, the changes in the adaptation, literature and cinema

Abstract:
This thesis constitutes the first comprehensive study of the life and work of Carmelo Pace (1906-1993), one of the most significant figures in twentieth-century Maltese music. Pace’s extensive output includes contributions to every major genre, including operas, large-scale choral works, symphonies, concertos, and much chamber music. The compositional idiom of some of these works departed radically from the conservative idioms employed by his Maltese predecessors, who mostly confined themselves to writing Catholic liturgical music in a conservative tonal idiom. Working largely in isolation, Pace evolved a complex post-tonal language which evinces similarities with the styles of Schoenberg, Bartók, Hindemith and other leading modernist figures. The opening chapter sketches the social and cultural context in which Pace worked, as well as the development of the art music tradition in Malta into the twentieth century. Chapter 2 assembles such information as is known about Pace’s life and presents an overview of his career. An important subsidiary focus of these chapters is to depict the rather impoverished and culturally marginalised nature of Maltese musical life at this period and describe the challenges that these conditions created for Pace and his contemporaries. The remaining five chapters provides an overview of Pace’s creative contributions to major genres: orchestral and concertante works; chamber music; keyboard works; choral and vocal works; and stage works. The principal focus is on his post-tonal works, which represent his most noteworthy creative achievements. Representative examples of these works, including Piano Sonata No. 2 and String Quartet No. 7, are analysed in depth to illustrate key features of Pace’s post-tonal musical language and approach to formal organization.

Barra, Giuseppina. "The rheology of caramel." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2004. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/11837/.

Full text
Abstract:
The rheology of caramel was determined as a function of processing temperature and hydrocolloid additions. As the processing temperature increased the water content decreased and the caramel viscosity increased. X-ray diffraction showed that although crystalline fat was present, for the most part the sugars were in the amorphous state. The exception was the lowest water content caramel (7.9% water w.w.b.) which had been processed to a temperature of 122ºC. This had a small amount of crystalline fructose. Caramel rheology was assessed by rotational and capillary rheometry. Rotational rheometry gave information on the steady shear viscosity, the dynamic parameters (storage and loss moduli and related functions) and the creep compliance and recovery response. Capillary rheometry gave shear viscosities at high shear rates and an extensional viscosity. It was found that caramel without added hydrocolloids had behavior which was close to a Newtonian liquid. The only exception to this was the values obtained for the Trouton ratio which ranged from 10 to 40. This was considerably higher than the value of 3 for a Newtonian fluid and may reflect the difficulties in making measurements on these relatively low viscosity systems in the capillary rheometer. The viscosities obtained from steady shear, oscillation and creep were combined and three approaches were used to model the data as a function of measurement temperature and water content. An empirical statistical model using a second order polynomial, an Arrhenius fit and a Williams Landel Ferry (WLF) model. The former and the latter gave a good fit to the data although the constants used in the WLF model varied with the water content of the caramel. Arrhenius plots showed curvature particularly at low water contents. Incorporation of the hydrocolloids carrageenan and gellan gum into the caramel made the material non-Newtonian and elastic. For carrageenan incorporation in particular the Trouton ratio increased with carrageenan concentration reaching a value ~500 at a strain rate of 100s-1 for the caramel containing 0.2% carrageenan It was demonstrated that incorporation of carrageenan could be used to prevent cold flow in caramels processed at relatively high water contents. Glass transition temperatures were measured by differential scanning calorimetry and calculated from the temperature dependence of the shift factors used to superimpose the oscillatory rheological data. Generally there was agreement between the two approaches although for some gellan gum containing samples the rheological Tg was about 10ºC higher than the DSC value. Fragility calculated from the WLF constants for caramel was high as has been reported for sugars. The Tg for both caramel and sugar water mixtures calculated using the Couchman-Karastz equation in the water content of interest (9-15% w.w.b.) was some 30-40°C higher than measured. It is suggested that this disagreement could be related to the high fragility of the sugar water systems. Isoelectric point measurements using a streaming potential technique was shown to give information on the extent of the Maillard reaction and the presence of hydrocolloids.

Weir, Simon. "The rheology of caramel." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/25868.

Full text
Abstract:
Caramel is a mixture of sugars, milk proteins, fat and water cooked at high temperatures to initiate Maillard reactions. We study caramels as ‘active emulsion-filled protein gels’, in which fat droplets are chemically-bonded to a background gel matrix of cross-linked proteins in a concentrated aqueous sugar solution. A ‘caramel region’ in composition space is delimited by the varying the four ingredients; sugar, milk protein, fat and water. The boundaries of the composition space define various modes of ‘failure’. Boundaries are determined for transitions to toffee and emulsification failure leaking out of the caramel, and protocol dependent failures, scum formation during the cooking step and subsequent boil over or the formation of a ‘creme Chantilly. Oscillatory rheology within the caramel region reveals that we can superpose the mechanical spectra of all caramels into a single pair of G'(ω),G''(ω) master curves using time-composition superposition (tCS) over 12 decades of frequency, so that all caramels are instances of an underlying ‘universal material’. The master curve is an example of a very lightly cross-linked amorphous polymer, a weak rubber. Utilising the cross-over point of G'(ω) and G''(ω) as a common point to compare caramel master curves the viscous and elastic dependency of caramel is determined and linked to the caramels ingredients. Viscosity is dependent on the aqueous sugar content and the elastic dependency on protein content. This insight constrains the molecular mechanisms for structure formation, and implies that measuring a couple of parameters suffices to predict the rheology of caramels over 12 orders of magnitude in frequency.

A firm’s participation in cartel depends upon the potential problems that may arise due to price fixing and the incentives provided to the management. The top levels of management such as the board of directors and the CEO are responsible for deciding if the firm will participate in the cartel and manage the corporate governance activities of collusive price fixing agreements. This study aims to identify which characteristics of the participating firms’ boards of directors and CEOs are associated with cartel formation. It analyses the empirical investigation of cartel participation of firms, taking into account corporate governance characteristics as such as board of directors’ characteristics, ownership structure, CEO characteristics, and CEO compensation scheme. The study is focused on UK cartel firms which has the highest representation in the sample. A total number of 150 cartel firms in 52 cases from all around the world between the years 1990 to 2008 are involved in this study, of which 114 are UK firms. Therefore, this study is dominated by UK firms. The challenge of this study is that the personal attributes of CEOs and boards can make a significant contribution to the risk profile of a cartel being formed. This indeed would be to ‘diagnose’ organisational culture in a quite radical direction. The study suggests and finds that some corporate governance attributes are associated with cartel formation. The results reveal consistency with prior researches, that cartel firms have different corporate governance relative to a control sample in the three years prior to cartel formation. Specifically, the study concludes that UK-based cartel firms characterised by having larger board size compared to non-cartel firms; lower percentage of independent directors (non-executive); higher average of board remuneration; less likely that cartel is formed by family-owned and controlled firm (large shareholders); having older CEOs represented on the board; having CEO who served a less number of years as a director; less likely to have a female CEO represented; more likely to have CEOs who’s combined CEO-chairman position; and a higher average of CEOs bonuses and compensation packages.

Collusive practices used by cartels have proven to be extremely harmful to economic efficiency and social welfare. Detecting these kind of practices has become a priority within antitrust agencies around the world. Regulators are constantly after effective ways to punish companies so that the costs of colluding outweighs its benefits. These punishments usually come in the form of fines or compensation payments that are calculated based on the estimated damages caused by the colluding firm. However, detecting cartel can pose a challenge to economists; it is a data intensive and time consuming process that involves estimating a competitive benchmark to compare with the suspected collusive behavior. The aim of this paper is to review the methods available for cartel damage quantification and apply it on a practical case. We start this study by understanding the harm that collusive practices used by cartels cause to economy and society. We then explore the different types of empirical methodologies used in calculating the estimated damages and the trade-offs of employing them. Next, we compare how antitrust agencies operate in the United States, European Union and Brazil and discuss their roles in calculating the damages and setting an appropriate fine to an antitrust violating firm. Finally, we take make an in depth analysis of a cartel in the Liquefied Petroleum Gas distribution market from February 2003 to April 2005 in the state of Pará, Brazil, employing the multivariate before and after and the difference-in-difference approaches. We found that the price overcharge for the cartel was between 10% to 13% in the first methodology and 16% to 17% in the latter.

Haase, Sandra. "Applying career competencies in career management." Thesis, Coventry University, 2007. http://eprints.worc.ac.uk/525/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis critically examines the use of competencies in career management, and introduces career competencies as an approach to sustainable career management. An 87-item measure of career competency (CC) was tested on a sample of 632 individuals from different backgrounds. From this, the Career Competencies Indicator (CCI) was developed. The CCI comprises 43 items, measuring seven subscales: goal setting and career planning, self-knowledge, job-related performance effectiveness, career-related skills, knowledge of (office) politics, networking and mentoring and feedback-seeking and self-presentation. Sub-scale alphas were of acceptable level and the factor structure was replicated with two other samples. The impact of CCs on objective career success (OCS) and subjective career success (SCS) was explored, administering the CCI to a sample of 269 police officers and 110 university employees. SCS was measured using Gattiker and Larwood’s (1986) five SCS scales and Greenhaus, Parasuraman and Wormley’s (1990) career satisfaction scale. OCS was assessed as income and number of promotions. The control variables included personality (Saucier, 1994), career salience (Allen & Ortlepp, 2002) and demographics. Discriminant validity was demonstrated between most of the CCI sub-scales and the personality variables. Above-chance similarity between the CCI sub-scales indicated convergent validity. The CCs contributed to SCS and OCS. For four of the SCS variables, this contribution added to the contribution of the control variables. The CCs further mediated the relationship between career salience and career outcomes. To generalise these results, future work should focus on a longitudinal approach considering a range of organisations. The CCI was used as a framework for informal career discussions with twenty-one police officers. The intervention was highly valued by participants. Behavioural changes were reported three months after the intervention. A pre-post approach found no significant differences in the increase of CCs, SCS and OCS between the control and the intervention group, apart from life success which was reportedly higher for the intervention group. However, the interaction plots showed an increase in CCs, SCS and OCS from time1 to time2 for the intervention group, which reached significance for the OCS and some of the SCS variables. The thesis considers the implications of the present findings and suggests avenues for future work. The role of CCs in dealing with the requirements of the new career realities and different ways of promoting CCs are also considered.

Abstract:
Competition among firms is a central feature in all free market economies such as South Africa. One of the biggest threats to competition is the presence of cartels in markets. Cartels are firms which collude and compete unfairly in order to obtain monopoly-like profits. For more than fifty years South Africa’s economic landscape has been dominated by a vast network of cartels invital industries, such as bread, cement and fertiliser. South Africa promulgated the Competition Act 89 of 1998 to eradicate cartels and promote and maintain competition within the South African economy. The Competition Act 89 of 1998 prohibits cartel activity and provides for a fine of 10% of turn over for firms found to have engaged in cartel activity. For a variety of reasons, these administrative fines have failed to deter firms from commencing and/or continuing to engage in cartel activity. This is evidenced by the increasing number of firms engaged in large -scale cartels in essential industries, such as construction and food. Public outcry and global trends have persuaded legislators to enactment more stringent penalties in the Competition Amendment Act 1 of 2009. Section 12 of the Competition Amendment Act , which inserts section 73A, creates a cartel of fence in terms of which a director who causes his firm to engage in cartel activity faces ten year imprisonment or a fine of R500, 000. This research shall critically analyse the Competition Amendment Acts effect on deterring cartel activity in South Africa. Despite the legislators’ aim to provide a bigger deterrent for engaging in cartel activity, section 73A of the Competition Amendment Act arouses scrutiny. Firstly, the promulgation of the new cartel offence is contrary to the decimalisation trend in South African company law which recognises the difficulty in enforcing complex regulatory offences with criminal provisions. Secondly, Section 73(5)A appears to infringe an accused director's right to be presumed innocent. Lastly there are co-ordination issues between the National Prosecuting Authority and the Corporate Leniency Policy relating to the granting of prose cutorial immunity for firms which cooperate with the Competition Commission. There search will out line these problems in full. With regards to the problems caused by section 73A, the research will use a comparative analysis with the positionin the United States. Of all the jurisdictions which criminalise cartel activity, the United States was one of the earliest and the most prolific insecuring convictions for directors who cause their firms to engage in cartel activity. The United States has taken innovative steps to supplement their public cartel enforcement drive such as the prosecution of international cartels and the use of private actions. In this regard, the research will extrapolate favourable cartel enforcement measures from the United States for recommendation in order to assist with South Africa’s cartel enforcement and alleviate the problems caused by section 73A, outlined above.
