The issue is a treaty for the members of the Third Order of Carmel where we can find several biographies of the carmelites woman of third order. Abstract:
California's network of marine protected areas was created to protect the diversity and abundance of native marine life, but the status of some taxa is very poorly known. Here we describe the sponges (phylum Porifera) from the Carmel Pinnacles State Marine Reserve, as assessed by a SCUBA-based survey in shallow waters. Of the 29 sponge species documented, 12 (41%) of them were previously unknown. Using a combination of underwater photography, DNA sequencing, and morphological taxonomy, we greatly improve our understanding of the status and distribution of previously described species and formally describe the new species as Hymedesmia promina sp. nov., Phorbas nebulosus sp. nov., Clathria unoriginalis sp. nov., Clathria rumsena sp. nov., Megaciella sanctuarium sp. nov., Mycale lobos sp. nov., Xestospongia ursa sp. nov., Haliclona melissae sp. nov., Halichondria loma sp. nov., Hymeniacidon fusiformis sp. nov., Scopalina carmela sp. nov., and Obruta collector gen. nov., sp. nov. An additional species, Lissodendoryx topsenti (de Laubenfels 1930), is moved to Hemimycale, and H. polyboletus comb. nov., nom. nov. is created due to preoccupation by H. topsenti (Burton, 1929). Several of the new species appear to be rare and/or have very restricted distributions, as they were not found at comparative survey sites outside of Carmel Bay. These results illustrate the potential of qualitative presence/absence systematic surveys of understudied taxa to discover and document substantial novel diversity.

Carmel-Veilleux, Tenessee.

Full text
Abstract:

Yannakis, Donna. "Violence and the other in the novels of Carmel Bird." Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 2019. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/2224.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis argues that throughout her fictional work, Carmel Bird interrogates multiple forms of violence against the gendered and racialised other. Using Judith Butler’s theories of gender performativity and the discursive construction of race, the thesis shows how these constructions not only inform or incite violence against the other, but are inherently violent in themselves. To chart these multiple forms of violence, the thesis uses Slavoj Žižek’s delineation of a triumvirate of violence: symbolic, systemic and subjective violence. He describes subjective violence as the most visible, physical violence of an actor or actors against an other. He determines that this subjective violence is only one part of a trinity of violence that includes two forms of more insidious, invisible violence – symbolic and systemic violence. Žižek argues that the symbolic violence of language and discourse and the systemic violence of political, economic and social systems inform, incite and produce subjective violence. With recourse to Butler and Žižek, the thesis demonstrates this argument by examining how Bird uses intertextuality, landscapes of surface and depth, non-traditional narrative strategies, Gothicism and irony in the novels Cherry Ripe (1985), The Bluebird Café (1990), The White Garden (1995), Red Shoes (1998), Cape Grimm (2004), Child of the Twilight (2010) and Family Skeleton (2016) to expose the ways these multiple forms of violence intersect and inform one another. Chapter One argues that Cherry Ripe uses intertextuality to show how the reiterative power of discourse enacts a symbolic violence by producing normative models of femininity. This symbolic violence, in turn, produces the systemic violence of female shame when women fail to adhere to those normative models. Chapter Two examines the construction of landscape in The Bluebird Café to argue that the novel interrogates the elision of the systemic and subjective violence against the convict and Aboriginal other in historical and cultural discourses. It additionally argues that this elision, alongside Australian discursive myth-making, constitutes an ongoing symbolic violence against the other. Chapter Three returns to the use of intertextuality in The White Garden. The novel’s invocation of an institutional scandal of abuse, hagiography and fairy-tales reveals the ways symbolic violence in these discourses inform the systemic and subjective violence against the female body and sexuality. Chapter Four examines the pre-occupation with narration and narrative strategy in Red Shoes to argue that narration and narrative control dictates who can speak and whose stories can be told. It particularly interrogates the ways narration enacts a symbolic violence by silencing the female voice and female stories. It goes on to demonstrate how these silences allow for systemic and subjective violence against women and children. Chapter Five focusses on the use of Gothic conventions and tropes in Cape Grimm to argue that the novel continues Bird’s concern with the elision of colonial, subjective violence against Aboriginal Australians and how that violence continues to haunt the present in the form of systemic violence against the indigenous population. It also argues that the construction of white belonging in Australia performs a symbolic violence in its attempts to shore up a sense of white indigeneity. Chapter Five explores Bird’s characteristic irony in Child of the Twilight to argue that the novel interrogates notions of origin, authenticity and faith to demonstrate the symbolic violence of human belief systems. The thesis concludes by examining the ways in which the symbolic, systemic and subjective violence invoked in these novels intersect with and inform the violence in Bird’s latest novel Family Skeleton.

NATOUR, MIRAS. "Social identity conflict in Druzes living in Carmel and Golan." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10281/103047.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis analyzes the complexity of social identity in two groups of Druze living in separate territories in Israel: Mount Carmel in the North West of the country, and Golan heights in the North East, at the border with Syria. The two groups, belonging to the same religious minority, are different from an historical, political, and social point of view. Druze, Arab, Israeli, and Syrian identities play different roles in the two groups – hence the complexity. These different identities may be in conflict with each other. The main hypotheses are that this identity conflict is significantly different in Carmel than in the Golan; and that it may be related in different ways to psychological dimensions such as optimism, collective self-esteem, and experiences of guilt and shame. The theoretical background of this thesis is based on three central theories: optimal distinctiveness (Brewer, 1991); social identity complexity (Roccas and Brewer, 2002); and bicultural identity integration (Benet-Martinez, 2002). The advantage of these theories is that they explain a large proportion of the complexity of social identity; however, these theories emerge in research as limited in conflictual contexts such as the Arab –Israeli conflict. The main effect in multiple identification process is the relation between oppositional and compatible social identification. As a consequence, individuals aim to construct a "third" social identity defined by the integration between both original identities: e.g. Druze/Arabic or Druze/Israeli or Druze/Syrian. This process involves values and cultural aspects. The thesis uses the above theories to explain the complexity of the "third" identity of the Druze. Furthermore, it investigates the ways in which the political conflict between Israel and Arab countries influences the "third' identity of the Druze. In a first step the thesis reconstruct the ecological contest: the historic, economic, religious, cultural factors characterizing the two groups of Druzes. The research develop in two phases: A first explorative inquiry with interviews to key persons in Carmel and in Golan with the aim of a depth knowledge of the topic. On this basis in the second phase the research applied 7 scales to a balanced sample of 196 subjects : 102 in Golan, 94 in Carmel; 46% male, 54% female. The methodology is a mixed one – qualitative and quantitative – on the idea that the argument of thesis, with his multi faced dimensions, requires non only quantitative data but both analysis of discourses and statistics. From the categorial content analysis of the transcription of interviews three principal groups of categories emerges: specific of Golan, specific of Carmel and common to both groups. For the Golani subjects the main topics are the separation from Syria with the consequent discontinuations, loss of Syrian culture and tradition and lack of citizenship. For the Carmeli subjects the main topics are military service law, feeling of treason and social assimilation. In addition, there are a common topics that emerge from both group as historical aspects, cultural invention economical aspect and uncertainly future. The most important results of the quantitative research demonstrate first of all that in both groups the Druze identities remain the strongest one. In Golan emerge as salient a Druze/Syrian as third identity . In Carmel emerge with the same relevance the Druze/Arabic and Druze/Israeli identity: as consequence , in Carmel emerge more relevant conflict between these "third" identities. In addition , the results demonstrate the positive correlation between the social identity conflict and lack of optimism, sense of guilt and shame. Consequently , these psychological dimensions are more problematic in Carmel than in Golan. The psychological well being, highlighted from the explored psychological dimensions, emerge as better in Golan even if the conditions of life are worse. In addition, the integration of Carmel Druzes in Israel underline the contradiction between economic benefits and the social identity conflict

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis presents the unpublished biography of the Aragonese friar Roque Alberto Faci (1684-1774), together with the analysis of his intellectual production. Almost fifty printed religious-themed works that resulted in diverse nature writings (biographies, Teresian apostolate, bibliographies, hagiographies, sermons…), with diverse pretensions. All this taking into account various factors (economic, intellectual, cultural and political) that point to why the process of Enlightenment was defined, how its ideals clashed with the majority culture of the catholic tradition and how the paths were modified from religious sentiment. In addition, in order to understand the life and work of the carmelite Roque Alberto Faci through constant features and regularities that defined both the friar and the religious family in which he incardinated, this thesis recovers, orders, understands and exposes the meaning of the history and development of the Order of Carmen from several centuries ago. Two chapters emerge from these claims. One of them exposes the most objective study that exists about the bases of the expansion of the Order in Aragon, from the first settlements in the thirteenth century, to the last house founded in 1673. Next to it, the succession of a whole political history of organizational divisions that were related to the conjunctures of social and economic powers of each moment, affecting the process in different ways. The other contains the only historiographic study that reflects five centuries of written production by the Carmelite family. The erudition of its members, the diverse controversies that their writings generated in each context, the influence that exerted among its members, and the complex socio-cultural structure of the Europe of these centuries, above all, from the renovating tendencies that they began to gestate in the seventeenth century and culminated under the definition of the Enlightenment in the eighteenth century. With the set, we have identified the professional and intellectual career of Roque Albert Faci, the various social plots in which he was found, the gap he occupied in eighteenth-century Zaragoza and the most reliable description of the friar to date.

Abstract:
The video camera, as a main tool of research, enabled to study carmelites daily life into a French Carmel. Aspects such as communal or solitary, materials or rituals, revealed the main features unique to the monacal life organisation. The prescriptions coming from the Rule and the Constitutions have a main influence on carmelites, visible into mental and behavioural habitus. The filmic description of actions and their detailed analysis has shown that the changeover between the religious to the non religious, the solitary to the communal is being accomplished as a fluid and harmonious continuity. All the practical conditions aim, in the daily monk's life, to an encounter with God. The seven films give an insight into essential elements of the monastic life as well as discreet evidences of the carmelitan spirituality
