Earls, Christopher J. "Comparison of nonlinear finite element formulations: application to trusses." Thesis, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/50104.

Full text
Abstract:
Two prominent continuum mechanics based incremental nonlinear finite element formulations are reviewed. An introduction to different material response measures suitable for nonlinear analysis, in addition to an overview of the Total and Updated Lagrangian reference frames, serve as the starting point for this review. The two nonlinear formulations are specialized for use with a geometrically nonlinear plane truss finite element. The truss formulations are then implemented into separate geometrically nonlinear finite element codes. Numerical comparisons of five test structures are carried out using ABAQUS and both programs. ABAQUS serves as the bench-mark by which the solution accuracy of the two programs is judged.

Moshier, Monty. "Laser-based broad-band spatially dense automated data acquisition system." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/44803.

Full text
Abstract:
The scanning laser Doppler vibrometer (SLDV) provides the capability necessary for collecting a broad-band spatially dense data set. A laser-based broad-band spatially dense automated data acquisition system is presented and verified. The motivation for such a system is to provide vibration data at many frequencies and spatial locations to allow a more complete dynamic characterization of a structure. The acquisition system interfaces an SLDV to a frequency analyzer and a Silicon Graphics Crimson workstation. The system allows the user to specify the frequency range, scanning area, and spatial density. The system moves the laser beam, collects and downloads data for the specified area and spatial density. The system post-processes the data compensating the measurements for calibrations and then computes the complex-valued Frequency Response Function (FRF), and coherence plots. The data acquisition system is used to collect FRF data for a beam hanging with simulated free-free boundary conditions. Examples of the FRFs are presented and the data verified by extracting the natural frequencies, damping, and mode shapes of the system. The experimental natural frequencies were compared with those predicted by Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. The comparison yielded less than an 8% difference for the first seven transverse bending modes extracted. The mode shapes were compared by the Modal Assurance Criterion to show the orthogonality of the modes and a comparison with theory. In each of the cases above, the comparisons yielded results that indicated the modes were both orthogonal and close to theory. The overall conclusion based on the above verification was that the system can be used to collect spatially dense broad-band vibration data that can be used to characterize structures.

Cromer, A. E. "Building with organic light." Thesis, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/53416.

Full text
Abstract:
The experience of daylight directly connects all human life to the universe of nature. Light is the empowering natural engine which anchors all human understanding of physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual discovery. “Building With Organic Light” is a search, through architecture, for the critical values of daylight and movement, in the environments designed for human health, disability, and recovery. This thesis document presents four specific design projects which focus on the value of environmental design specifically crafted to motivate the development of a child living with cerebral palsy. The work is grounded in the thesis that an architectural environment directly integrated with the energy of daylight and nature, is within itself a therapeutic vessel for human health.

Abstract:
“Images haunt… Images are not quite ideas, they are stiller than that, with less implication outside themselves. And they are not myth, they do not have that explanatory power; they are nearer to pure story. Nor are they always metaphors; they do not say this is that, they this is. In the nineteenth century one would have said that what compelled about them was a sense of the eternal. And it is something like that, some feeling in the arrest of the image that what perishes and what lasts forever have been brought into conjunction, and accompanying that sensation is a feeling of release from the self.” Robert Hass

Owings, Cynthia L. "Linear life: the alley rediscovered." Thesis, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/53424.

Full text
Abstract:
Architects must use their intuitive abilities to recognize worldly phenomena that can transcend the mundane, and they must interpret them and through them create architecture. Often dismissed as a dismal, merely utilitarian space, the alley presents certain unique conditions which merit attention. Exploration of the conditions led to the development of urban dwellings in which the alley is dignified and becomes a space for comfortable habitation. The housing settlement is located in downtown Blacksburg, a small college town in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Southwest Virginia. The site is one of the original 16 blocks of the town's central business district. An urban density exists due to the many retail shops and restaurants that are frequented by students and the local townspeople. The initial objective was to integrate this settlement into the fabric of the town by maintaining the density of the downtown area, not only on the street level but within the block as well. The intent was to create urban dwellings that would emphasize the idea of community within a downtown setting.

Burton, Michael John. "The loss of place." Thesis, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/53414.

Full text
Abstract:
The current crisis of the “American City”, stems from the notion of “The Loss of Place.” This concept of “Place” is defined and a specific project study demonstrating this concept of “Place” is presented. By utilizing new technologies available for methods and means of construction to produce “Meaningful” buildings that convey a sense of “Place” the identity and character of our cities will re-emerge.

Teer, Jill Marie. "Filled with light: a new meaning for architecture." Thesis, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/52148.

Full text
Abstract:
With completion of the project, it is important to critically examine the result in order to derive new thought or insight gained from the design process. I feel, at least for the time being, that the narrative of the architectural experience is sufficient, and of itself a valid closure for all lines of reasoning. However, we are left with the thesis that claims that the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University Center for Culinary Arts has provided a new meaning; that it is filled with light. Perhaps a better, yet less abstract theory would claim that light provides us with the knowledge that sustains us in our productive and creative endeavors. Our creative visions are dependent upon it as well as our basic need for life itself. This is a sad moment in the course of the thesis project for several reasons. First, many years have been spent with its involvement and facilitation. Second, the desire remains to continue with its path of exploration, to improve upon it - to make it better. Finally, the friends made along that path; I must let them go, at least for a time. And, at this juncture, I have found this to be inherently problematic with the nature of a thesis project. Conversely, this is a happy moment. The project remains as a direct result of the experience. Though it has a "shelf-life" (the model and the drawings), the thesis remains that there is a new meaning: that which is filled with light. So, in transcending the experience, I take this gift of light which has been facilitated so patiently and constantly to that which is new. And, perhaps, those that have been involved with the process of its making will also find a new meaning as a result of the exchange. "Hence the legend that in a classical work, even if only a tiny fragment survives, one can always reconstruct the whole."

Edge, Kay F. "The African burial ground." Thesis, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/53418.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is tripartite. It is at once a search for the universal principles of good architecture, an architect's personal search for what is valuable, and the exploration of some particular ideas in a particular project. The successful thesis joins the universal and the particular and calls into use the rational and the intuitive. The thesis began with an attempt to name some of these universals and from them to distill some "clear and distinct"² ideas about the making of architecture. Together these ideas make a manifesto, not in a positivistic sense but rather as a way of beginning this "creative dialectic" between universal and particular. They are ultimately to help address the issue of significance in architecture.

Lacher, Kria. "Blenko Glass Gallery." Thesis, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/53421.

Full text
Abstract:
This master's thesis is the design and discussion of a glass gallery and museum for the Blenko Glass factory in Milton, West Virginia. It is an exploration of Hertzberger’s concept of warp and weft. Let us take the image of a fabric such as constituted by warp and weft. You could say the warp established the basic ordering of the fabric, and in doing so creates the greatest opportunity to achieve the greatest possible variety and colorfulness in the weft. The warp must first and foremost be strong and of the correct tension, but as regards to color it needs merely to serve as a base. It is the weft that gives color, pattern and texture to the fabric, depending on the imagination of the weaver. Warp and weft make up an invisible whole, the one cannot exist without the other, they give each other their purpose.

Abstract:
"A building is a small city, a city is a large building." Alberti Even though Alberti wrote this quote hundreds of years ago, it still raises relevant design issues that can be explored in the architecture of today’s buildings. The quote addresses a modern architectural question in the design of large scale mixed use buildings by offering an architect the similarities between city-building and building interior spaces. These relationships all share design possibilities such as views, thresholds, passageways, public spaces, private spaces, places for activity, and places for rest. These are just a few of the physical and emotional ties that allow a city/building/interior space the opportunity to relate to its surroundings and ultimately create its surroundings.
