Abstract:
David Hume (1711-1776) has long been considered a severe denunciator of 'social contract theory', and this interpretation has implicitly premised a perspective that lays heavy weight on the importance of social contract in the history of political thought. This work presents Hume's critique of the Lockean version of the social contract, and identifies the issues responsible for such criticism. In Book 3 of Hume's Treatise on Human Nature (henceforth T), Hume displays his systematic criticism of social contract theory. Hume did not consider social contract theory as an important trend in the history of political thought. One of his points was that 'social contract theory' was quite new, strange and 'heterodoxical' in politics. This work offers an appraisal of Hume’s stance on the Lockean variant of “Social Contract Theory” and proposes a more judicious textual reading of his contributions in this regard.

Abstract:
The social sciences are predominantly seen by their practitioners as critical endeavours, which should inform criticism of harmful institutions, beliefs and practices. Accordingly, political attacks on the social sciences are often interpreted as revealing an unwillingness to accept criticism and an acquiescence with the status quo. But this dominant view of the political implications of social scientific knowledge misses the fact that people can also be outraged by what they see as its apologetic potential, namely that it provides excuses or justifications for people doing bad things, preventing them from being rightfully blamed and punished. This introduction to the special issue sketches the long history of debates about the exculpatory and justificatory consequences of social science and lays the foundations for a theory of social scientific apologia by examining three main aspects: what social and cognitive processes motivate this type of accusation, how social theorists respond to it and whether different contexts of circulation of ideas affect how these controversies unfold.

Abstract:
Some biblical scholars understand Deuteronomy to be the end of the Pentateuch. Before the nation of Israel became a confederate system, the socio-political reality could usually be seen in the composition, interaction, and behavior of relationships in society, which were assumed to be political elements. The Israeli confederation which is like the ambition centered on Yahweh is what the author refers to as Israel's "Qahal". Martin Noth explains Qahal Israel in Deuteronomist Historical Works, which began with a period of wandering under the leadership of Musa, then became an immigrant in the Land of Canaan, followed by Saul's leadership where Israel asked the king to directly lead the Israelites. In the leadership of David and Solomon, which originally had 12 tribes, eventually split into two nations. With this monarchical system, God hates, because he does not reject God as the government in their life. The purpose of this study was to find the location of the Deuteronomy and Eating Qahal books in the book of laws. The research method uses critical research with a study of literature and ideological sources using Martin Noth's theory which is an early thesis in Deuteronomic History Works. The novelty of this research is the existence of a new meaning where the main message of Deuteronomic history works, namely Israel is forced to turn to God, confess His sins, and return to submit and obey His word because they have been chosen to be God's people (2 Ki 17:13).

Abstract:
Objective:Breast pumps have been seen since antiquity and have become a ubiquitous part of breastfeeding. Breast pumps are used for numerous reasons and have become incorporated into law and regulations in the United States. Breast pumps have allowed breastfeeding and lactation to proceed both under normal conditions and with significant challenges. However, the rapid proliferation of breast pumps and their heavy promotion have prompted social criticism regarding whether pumps have displaced the promotion of direct breastfeeding and deflected addressing more pressing social issues such as greater investment in breastfeeding promotion and care and the creation of a national paid family leave policy. Methods:This survey of the history of breast pumps and accompanying concerns utilized historical and current references, U.S. patents, and perusal of government laws and regulations. Results:This history of breast pumps and accompanying concerns highlights the progression of breast pump technology, exposes social criticism of breast pumps, discusses alterations in expressed milk composition, and raises the possibility of altered infant health outcomes from consuming pumped breastmilk. Conclusions:Breast pump use is a necessity for many families and should be balanced against the potential of interfering with the breastfeeding relationship.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the features of understanding of the history of philosophical process by the leading representative of French Neo-Kantianism. The binary scheme, thoroughly substantiated by Renоuvier in the “Sketch of the Systematic Classification of Philosophical Doctrines”, was a certain result of his previous creative way. In the “Textbook of Philosophy of the New Age”, he, highlighting the pantheism–idealism dilemma, expresses his sympathies for eclecticism. In the “Textbook of Ancient Philosophy”, he advocates giving philosophy a scientific character by combining the laws of reason and history. In “Experiences of General Criticism” he builds a system of neo-criticism, identifying phenomena with reality. Finally, the “Sketch” presents an attempt at an objective consideration of the history of philosophy. Renоuvier identifies six oppositions passing through the entire history of thought (thing–consciousness, infinite–finite, evolution–creation, necessity–freedom, happiness–duty, evidence–belief). The strength of his method is the desire to make a choice between opposing trends, taking into account intellectual motives, passions, practical inducements of varying degrees of community. But both elements of reductionism and unfounded optimism about the lack of influence of all kinds of systems on his own constructions are present in his approach.

Abstract:
Literary criticism is one of the most important and complex parts of literature, closely related to history and the theory of literature. It defines the nature of verbal art, the relationship and aesthetic peculiarities between the reality of life and artistic reality. It is aimed to evaluate literary heritage, artistic works in terms of the requirements of today. Literary criticism mainly considers contemporary literary trends, its development, writers and their work from a modern point of view. Since it defines the ideological power and aesthetic qualities of a literary work, literary criticism is based on the challenges facing the development of a society, differentiating it from the heights of human values. One of the topical issues of modern Kazakh literary scienceis the analysis of the current state, development directions, shortcomings and achievements of literary criticism, the study of features, the study of internal laws. It is awell known fact that the Kazakh literary criticism has passed various stages and is based on the best experience of world literature and sets up ts own scientific conclusions and positions. Scientific principles of literary criticism are interconnected with new methods of semiotics, structuralism, postmodernism in modern Kazakh literary science. Contemporary literary criticism focuses on receptive aesthetics and aesthetic categories. Comprehensive understanding of new directions has determined the goals and objectives of our research work. In this connection, the article has covered issues of generalization, analysis, comparisons, study of critical views, new searches, scientific works, critical views of modern Kazakh literary critics. The review of new approaches to the study of Kazakh literary criticism was conducted as well. Having conducted the analysis of significant research works of foreign and domestic researchers, the role in the literature has been determined. The aim of this paper is to reveal Socrates as a thorough democrat. In the first section, I will disprove the credibility of Xenophon’s Memorabilia, a common source for scholars who view Socrates as an antidemocratic thinker. I will then argue, in the second section, that the views of a few scholars who portray Socrates as a prodemocratic thinker represent a far-from-satisfactory depiction of his political views. In the third section, I will then demonstrate that Socrates’ criticism of democracy is not of democracy itself nor of Athenian laws, but instead a criticism of a particular sort of democracy seen in the period of Athenian imperialism, and that it derives from his fundamental recognition of human ignorance. After pointing out Socrates’ special preference for the democratic laws of Athens, seen in the Crito, I will establish, in the fourth section, a preference in his philosophy showing him as a staunch democrat who upheld the concept of the rule of law.

Abstract:
Criticism of Joseph Schacht's hadith thought does not automatically undermine his theories. Even if examined further, these criticisms can be countered with a detailed and complete reading of Schacht's work. Therefore, in this article, the author tries to reveal further Schacht's theory about the arbitrarily backwards isnad which has implications for the emergence of alternative names. The unit of analysis of this article is the work of Schacht: The Origins of Muhammadan Jurisprudence. The aspects studied are: 1). arbitrarily backward isnād projection; and 2). Alternative names in isnād. In this article the author uses a descriptive qualitative approach with the documentary method. The data collected was then analyzed using the historical and critical isnad methods. The result of this study is that in the history of the development of legal doctrine, the starting point of Islamic jurisprudence was from the late period of the Umayyad dynasty (132 H.). At this time isnād began to be used. The ancient schools of law made living traditions the source of their laws. Each generation in the Islamic region (Iraq, Hijaz, and Syria) has an agreed legal doctrine. Initially this doctrine was general in nature, only representing the opinion of the group (anonymous). But since the decades of the second century, the legal doctrines of the living tradition have been projected onto the great figures of the past who can be chosen at random. This projection then generates alternative names that can be used interchangeably. In this section, in particular, the quality of criticism of Schacht's hadith thinking can be seen.

Abstract:
Vanda Zaborskaitė (1922–2010) was a famous literary critic and the author of a fundamental monograph about the prominent Lithuanian poet Jonas Mačiulis-Maironis (Maironis, 1968, 1987). Vanda Zaborskaitė wrote during the period of Soviet occupation, when Marxist criticism was obligatory. She used the sociological method as interpreted by Marxism, but she never accepted its philosophical determinism. She considered it important to put a literary work in the contextual frame of the literary history; however, she did not accept the view according to which literature is ruled by the laws of the social and cultural history. The philosophical position of Vanda Zaborskaitė was modernisation of the classical literary criticism, which is a tradition of the literary study sourced from the times of Aristotle’s Poetics. A characteristic of this tradition is reliance on the deep ordered structures observed in literary works. Vanda Zaborskaitė investigated such deep literary structures (images and their constellations) as codes of individual artistic self-awareness. In the opinion of the researcher, the pinnacles of literary art are those works which, by employing aesthetic persuasion, interpret the classical ideas of the Western world: the ideas of the absolute value of the personality, freedom, and the primate of the spirit. Professor Vanda Zaborskaitė researched the Lithuanian classic authors during the years of Soviet occupation, and did this in such a way that her works promoted the classical literature along with the classical values.

Abstract:
The cantigas de amor, de amigo, de escarnio, and de maldecir are poetic compositions written between 1200 and 1350 which form a literary school commonly referred to as Galician-Portuguese. The troubadours who refine these compositions do not limit themselves to composing cantigas of only one genre. They write cantigas of all types. For thematic and formal purposes, the common practice is to divide the cantigas into four genres. These divisions are not always very clear.
Because they were in touch with all sorts of cantigas, the poets included in their poems characteristics which blended from one genre to another. This may or may not have been done intentionally. Critics later studied these cantigas. They found that cantigas of one genre shared peculiarities common to cantigas of other genres, but they did not explore further into this trait. This study analyzes characteristics found commonly in one genre of cantiga and, as well, by placing together those cantigas with related attributes, it establishes the overlapping that takes place between the cantigas of different genres.

Thesis, McGill University, 1996. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=40379.

Full text
Abstract:
The object of this thesis is to study the monologue, a dramatic genre that re-emerged on the Spanish literary scene in the 1970s. Despite the fact that a number of well-known Iberian playwrights have cultivated this genre assiduously over the past three decades, their work has received relatively little critical attention from either academic or theatre circles. What is sought here, therefore, is the means to demonstrate the importance and richness of the monologue as an autonomous dramatic creation. To do this it was necessary to establish a sufficiently large corpus--some eighty long and short monologues--and identify those particular conventions and the structural diversity that would make possible the formulation of a theory of connected language functions in the monologue by adapting existing theoretical principles to the study of this singular genre. The application of this theoretical construct enabled me to determine the nature of the functions of expression, communication and persuasion present in the discourse of a single speaker.
Specifically, in considering the function of expression I reflect both upon the coherent discourse that derives from the (exterior) verbalization of (interior) thought and emotion, and upon the objectives and consequences of such expressions of the mental and emotional states of the individual. Secondly, I focus attention on the same verbal discourse inasmuch as it reflects the complex function of communication manifested in both an immanent and in a transcendental form. Such complexity derives from the fact that, if verbal discourse here is enunciated either in isolation or before an interiorized addressee (a fictional being), it is always emitted in the "presence" of an external addressee (the theatre audience/or reader). Finally, my study of the function of persuasion underscores the idea of empowerment: the authority of the word that is wielded by the monologist upon his/her addressee(s), a verbal manipulation that takes place both within the fictional world and beyond.
In short, this thesis seeks to show how the monologue as a fictional dramatic genre questions the viability of interpersonal relationships.

Abstract:
The way we read and interpret literature is frequently influenced by factors that operate beyond the scope of the average reader's awareness. In this thesis, selected works by two Wayuu writers, Estercilia Simanca Pushaina and Vicenta Maria Siosi Pino, are analyzed and interpreted in an attempt to unveil some of these behind-the-scenes agents and issues, as well as explore how the stories' classification in the children's literature genre reveals a deep-rooted colonial tendency to infantilize indigenous individuals in contemporary Colombia. Despite the fact that the two authors, both mestizo women who self-identify with the Wayuu indigenous group of northern Colombia, prefer to write short stories that highlight the child and adolescent experience, the implicit themes and the complexity of their texts reject the "children's story" label that has been imposed on their literature. Furthermore, this thesis discusses how the two authors utilize the colonial trope of the Indian-as-child to their advantage by capsizing the imagery, thus rejecting the original power of the symbol and claiming it as their own. The first section of this investigation provides certain contextual specifics related to the cultural and social environment of the Wayuu indigenous group, particularly regarding that experienced by women. The second chapter includes an explanation of the impact a book's genre and its "paratext" may have on the reception and interpretation of these texts, and additionally proposes that the colonial practice of infantilizing indigenous people appears in both the assignment of genre as well as in several extratextual elements surrounding the stories. Chapter three offers an in-depth analysis of five selected pieces of the Wayuu authors' writing and explores how the texts may be read on multiple levels. This close reading reveals several examples of overt criticism towards the hegemonic society as well as displays instances of a more subtle rebellion; both explicit and implicit messages effectively expose and protest the current conditions of abuse, oppression and injustice that continue to anguish the Wayuu people.

Abstract:
Un-Yung La was one of the first Korean composers of Western style choral music who used Korean folk elements in his composers. According to Un-Yung La's musical theory, which he demonstrated in Easter Cantata. Korean-style melody and rhythm were created based on Korean traditional scales and he also used Western-style harmonization. He attempted a new Korean style of expression through Sikimsae technique in Korean traditional vocal music genres: Pansori and Sijo. The purpose of this paepr is to discuss traditional Korean performance elements related to melody, harmony, and rhythm as employed in La's Easter Cantata. The study will increase the knowledge of western conductors who wish to understand Korean folk music in preparation for performance of choral works such as La's Easter Cantata.

Abstract:
There are multiple ways in which language and image share one another’s aesthetic message, such as traditional ekphrasis, which uses language to describe a work of art, or notional ekphrasis, which involves literature describing something that can be considered a work of art but does not physically exist at the time the description is written. However, these two terms are not inclusive to all artworks depicting literature or literature depicting artworks. Several scenes and characters from literature have been appropriated in art and the numerous paintings of Ophelia’s death as described by Gertrude in Hamlet, specifically Millais’ Ophelia, is the focus of this project. Throughout this thesis I analyze Gertrude’s account in three sections—the landscape, the body, and the voice—and compare it to its transmutation on the canvas.

Abstract:
The aim of this Doctoral Thesis has been the study of the amorous conceptions which are present in the spanish novel of the Restoration period (taking Benito Pérez Galdós works as a point of reference), especially regarding an idealistic point of view, and considering the following two aspects:1.The importance of amorous speech for the structural and thematic constitution of these works, since it is an essential component in the sentimental, moral, and intellectual configuration of their protagonists.2.The underlying ideologies which can be discovered through the exegesis and the analysis of the relevant texts in their relation to amorous conceptions of the authors of that time. We have focused on the influence of the most important schools of thought at the end of the XIX th. century (Idealism, Positivism, Pragmatism and Spirituality), and on their reflection and development in the Spanish novel in the Restoration period.

Abstract: This study is an analysis on Dominican Bartolomé de Las Casas¿ Apologética Historia Sumaria. It is a thesis about the American continent and its natives, finished in 1550¿s. His approaches and the wellspring of information that had been used by the friar were our first object. We decided to specify his written essay, which was responsible for other representation of the indigenes that supplements the ingenuous people¿s notion of the Brevísima Relación de Desctrucción de las Indias, his best known work. The main topics that we considered were: the analogy between nature and habitant to justify his rhetoric Indian support; the historical documents selected; the ¿Indian republics¿ concept, which was used to put on the same level American and European people; and the religious controversies. Therefore, we discussed those points of the Apologética, to try to comprehend the development of the Las Casas¿ purpose

Full text
Abstract:
The philosophy of history needs the availability of basic components, namely: historical material (cognitive), historical thought (historical mentality represented by sense and historical awareness), and a balanced academic method (organized and precise) in order for the rational philosophical vision to emerge from comprehensive study of a civilizational nature for which laws (theories) can be formulated. ), with realistic evidence and evidence, called the philosophy of history! . Al-Yaqubi (third century AH / ninth century AD) showed comprehensive analysis with his sense and historical awareness, and through his historical criticism and his renewal of the method of historical recording, he distinguished himself from those who preceded him and those who followed him with his book entitled “The Problem of People of Their Time and What Predominates in Every Age,” thus revealing the beginning of For the idea of the philosophy of history, where he laid the foundations for the theory of the problem (imitation, imitation) as one of the engines of the wheel of history, a factor influencing the spirituality of the era, the natures of the members of society, and an important and vital part in the formation of human civilizations . The law of problematization, in its philosophical theory, requires AlYaqoubi to reveal the characteristics of each caliph in his policies, interests, and social behaviors, which applies to those with power, influence, prestige, and authority, and as a symbol and role model for society (an elite group), in a collective imitation of their behaviors (at all times and places) by individuals. Human societies. Accordingly, Al-Yaqubi assumed that rulers have a fundamental role in preserving states and societies, and developing civilizations. They can either reform or corrupt them at all levels of civilization, and therefore the problem changes according to the trends of the elite symbols !

Abstract:
The course is based on a Learning by Design and Project-Based Learning methodology, on which the project is the basis of the student’s education. The design course –architectural design– aims to offer critical reflections on the current social challenges in relation to housing and ecological issues. It integrates inquiry and study of the conditions and qualities that make a specific place inhabitable; skills on how to implement and develop building systems and techniques; and a rigorous knowledge and avid curiosity of architectural history, theory, and criticism that can operate within a particular cultural context while contributing meaningful improvements to it. In this sense, the course reflects on new residential fragments built in Aarhus through housing and domestic space in its different typologies, formats, and contexts, and the study of building systems, materiality, and tectonics.

Abstract:
It has been nearly two decades since Sarah Whiting, Bob Somol, Michael Speaks and Stan Allen, declared that architectural design practice should break from what they described as a design culture bogged down with theory, and restrained by what they called the “critical project.” This paper returns to the twin problematic of post theory and post critique. Yet it approaches the topic from a more institutional perspective, developing a new diagnosis based on the fate of institutional arrangements within schools of architecture involving the creation of “history, theory, and criticism” in the mid-1960s and its relation to design practice. It returns to papers delivered by Peter Collins, Bruno Zevi, Sibyl Moholy-Nagy, and Stephen Jacobs at the 1964, ACSA-AIA Cranbrook Teachers Seminar in order to revisit a number of arguments about why schools of architecture should develop a particular relationship to history within their own institutional context, different from art history and uniquely tied to theory and criticism; and how this development would enable studio design practices to be critical. Despite this institutional settlement, which gave birth to a new form of history inside schools of architecture that promised to transform practice into a new critical mode, larger processes of academic growth during the 1980s and 1990s have led to a severance of this relationship and a return to something close to what Collins, Zevi, Moholy-Nagy and Jacobs criticized when they challenged architectural education’s derivation of its history from the independent field of art history, which they deemed too disengaged from creative practice. The paper argues that our posttheoretical and post-critical situation within the culture of architectural design has more to do with the changing institutional configuration within education: namely the professionalization and thus polarization of history and design, and the erasure of the mediating field of theory and criticism.

Abstract:
постарался соединить эти две позиции в одну, что и стало предметом анализа автора статьи. in the philosophy of the history of the twentieth century, a twofold tendency can be distinguished. On the one hand, the classical philosophy of history is subjected to radical criticism (in German philosophical hermeneutics, French structuralism and poststructuralism, English-speaking analytical philosophy), and on the other hand, it continues and develops in various concepts and theories (S. Huntington's "clash of civilizations", "end of history" F. Fukuyama). Such duality (criticism of the philosophy of history and its development) is not a characteristic only of our modernity. The outstanding German philologist and philosopher Friedrich Schlegel (1772–1829), in the situation of the philosophical revolution at the turn of the 18th–19th centuries, tried to combine these two positions into one, , which became the subject of the analysis of the author of the article.

FĂRCĂȘEL, Ligia. "A Perspective on the Musical Criticism of Iasi from the Interwar Period." In The International Conference of Doctoral Schools “George Enescu” National University of Arts Iaşi, Romania. Artes Publishing House UNAGE Iasi, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.35218/icds-2023-0007.

Abstract:
The advantage of learning history through the perspective of the criticism of a certain period lies in the fact that the journalist does not merely reproduce the information, but also describes the state emanating from the events commented upon, himself being contemporary with them. For us, readers of later decades, newspapers are, objectively speaking, a genuine history textbook. However, discovering interwar periodicals from Iasi has proven to be a fairly difficult task. In order to identify the titles from Iasi, I have consulted the catalogues of three major libraries in the city: “Mihai Eminescu” Central University Library, “Gheorghe Asachi” County Library and the library of “George Enescu” National University of Arts. In this endeavor, I discovered titles that appear either in the pre-war or in the post-war periods. Moreover, publications such as Curierul de Iași issued both before and after the wars but ceased their activity in the interwar period. Finally, the titles that circulated in the interwar period and could be accessed are Flacăra Iașului, Ziarul Opinia, Evenimentul, Însemnări ieșene and Ziarul Scânteia. Starting from their pages, I have attempted to reconstruct a side of the interwar artistic climate of Iași.

Abstract:
This publication reviews the history of digitalization of tax administration in Korea dating back to the 1990s and shares the countrys experience and know-how in building an efficient e-taxation architecture. Its main emphasis is on how the Korean government managed to make the best use of a wide range of taxpayer information efficiently and securely. It highlights information security and presents three case studies of an institutional framework for using third-party data: tax schemes for credit card usage, a cash receipt system, and e-invoicing. It then lays out a range of policy implications for consideration by tax authorities in the Latin American and Caribbean region.

Abstract:
The subject of the study is the cooperation of S. Efremov with Western Ukrainian periodicals as a page in the history of Ukrainian journalism which covers the relationship of journalists and scientists of Eastern and Western Ukraine at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries. Research methods (biographical, historical, comparative, axiological, statistical, discursive) develop the comprehensive disclosure of the article. As a result of scientific research, the origins of Ukrainocentrism in the personality of S. Efremov were clarified; his person as a public figure, journalist, publisher, literary critic is multifaceted; taking into account the specifics of the memoir genre and with the involvement of the historical context, the turning points in the destiny of the author of memoirs are interpreted, revealing cooperation with Western Ukrainian magazines and newspapers. The publications ‘Zoria’, ‘Narod’, ‘Pravda’, ‘Bukovyna’, ‘Dzvinok’, are secretly got into sub-Russian Ukraine, became for S. Efremov a spiritual basis in understanding the specifics of the national (Ukrainian) mass media, ideas of education in culture of Ukraine at the end of XIX century, its territorial integrity, and state independence. Memoirs of S. Efremov on cooperation with the iconic Galician journals ‘Notes of the Scientific Society after the name Shevchenko’ and ‘Literary-Scientific Bulletin’, testify to an important stage in the formation of the author’s worldview, the expansion of the genre boundaries of his journalism, active development as a literary critic. S. Yefremov collaborated most fruitfully and for a long time with the Literary-Scientific Bulletin, and he was impressed by the democratic position of this publication. The author’s comments reveal a long-running controversy over the publication of a review of the new edition of Kobzar and thematically related discussions around his other literary criticism, in which the talent of the demanding critic was forged. S. Efremov steadfastly defended the main principles of literary criticism: objectivity and freedom of author’s thought. The names of the allies of the Ukrainian idea L. Skochkovskyi, O. Lototskyi, O. Konyskyi, P. Zhytskyi, M. Hrushevskyi in S. Efremov’s memoirs unfold in multifaceted portrait descriptions and function as historical and cultural facts that document the pages of the author’s biography, record his activities in space and time. The results of the study give grounds to characterize S. Efremov as the first professional Ukrainian-speaking journalist.

Survival of the Richest: How we must tax the super-rich now to fight inequality. Oxfam, January 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.21201/2023.621477.

Abstract:
We are living through an unprecedented moment of multiple crises. Tens of millions more people are facing hunger. Hundreds of millions more face impossible rises in the cost of basic goods or heating their homes. Poverty has increased for the first time in 25 years. At the same time, these multiple crises all have winners. The very richest have become dramatically richer and corporate profits have hit record highs, driving an explosion of inequality. This report focuses on how taxing the rich is vital to addressing this unprecedented polycrisis and skyrocketing inequality. The report explores how, in recent history, taxation of the richest was far higher; how talk of taxing the rich and making billionaires pay their fair share is hugely popular; and how taxing the rich claws back elite power and reduces not just economic inequality, but racial, gender and colonial inequalities, too. The report lays out how much tax the richest should pay, and the practical, tried and tested ways in which governments can raise such taxation. It shows us how taxing the rich can set us clearly on a path to a more equal, sustainable world free from poverty.

Carty, Anthony, and Jing Gu. Theory and Practice in China’s Approaches to Multilateralism and Critical Reflections on the Western ‘Rules-Based International Order’. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), October 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/ids.2021.057.

Full text
Abstract:
China is the subject of Western criticism for its supposed disregard of the rules-based international order. Such a charge implies that China is unilateralist. The aim in this study is to explain how China does in fact have a multilateral approach to international relations. China’s core idea of a community of shared future of humanity shows that it is aware of the need for a universal foundation for world order. The Research Report focuses on explaining the Chinese approach to multilateralism from its own internal perspective, with Chinese philosophy and history shaping its view of the nature of rules, rights, law, and of institutions which should shape relationships. A number of case studies show how the Chinese perspectives are implemented, such as with regards to development finance, infrastructure projects (especially the Belt and Road Initiative), shaping new international organisations (such as the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank), climate change, cyber-regulation and Chinese participation in the United Nations in the field of human rights and peacekeeping. Looking at critical Western opinion of this activity, we find speculation around Chinese motives. This is why a major emphasis is placed on a hermeneutic approach to China which explains how it sees its intentions. The heart of the Research Report is an exploration of the underlying Chinese philosophy of rulemaking, undertaken in a comparative perspective to show how far it resembles or differs from the Western philosophy of rulemaking.
