Abstract:
This study aims at improving the multi-floor layout of a card and packet production company based on the Systematic Layout Planning (SLP) method. A detailed study of the facility layout such as its operational processes, flow of materials and activity relationships has been done. Long distance, cross-traffic, and cost have been identified as the major problems of the current multi-floor layout. Three alternative layouts were suggested by SLP and the best alternative was selected and compared with the current layout. The results revealed that the new alternative layout could considerably improve the companys layout problems.

AbstractThis paper focuses on computer-based generative methods for layout problems in architecture and urban planning with special regard for the hierarchical structuring of layout elements. The generation of layouts takes place using evolutionary algorithms, which are used to optimize the arrangement of elements in terms of overlapping within a given boundary and the topological relations between them. In this paper, the approach is extended by a data structure that facilitates the hierarchical organization of layout elements making it possible to structure and organize larger layout problems into subsets that can be solved in parallel. An important aspect for the applicability of such a system in the design process is an appropriate means of user interaction. This depends largely on the calculation speed of the system and the variety of viable solutions. These properties are evaluated for hierarchical as well as for nonhierarchical structured layout problems.

PT. Argha Prima Karya Industry is a company engaged in the field of flexible packaging. Problems found on the production floor of PT. Argha Karya Prima Industry is a delay in production time due to the engine distance that is too far and the availability of material handling is lacking. The product studied in this study is polyester plastic film with a production capacity of 1 unit within 11 hours equivalent to 2 days, while the production target set is 1 unit within 8 hours equivalent to 1 day. Layout the initial model of PT. Argha Karya Prima Industry was analyzed by simulation using ProModel software. Then after the initial layout was declared valid, improvements were made to the problems of the production floor layout using the Systematic Layout Planning method. From this method, two alternative layouts are obtained. The difference from the two proposed layouts is in the initial model, the slitter unwinder machine adjacent to the waste trimming area, while in the proposed layout 1, the slitter unwinder machine is located adjacent to the temporary storage rack. Then in the proposed layout 2, the slitter rewinder machine is adjacent to the finishing good area, while in the initial layout, the rewinder machine is adjacent to the temporary storage rack.

This research introduces a computational algorithm that uses simulated annealing to optimize three-dimensional component layouts. General component layout problems are characterized by three objectives: achieving high packing density, fitting components into a given container and satisfying spatial constraints on components. This paper focuses on the extension of a simulated annealing packing algorithm to a general layout algorithm through the implementation of a language of spatial constraints that are characteristic of layout problems. These constraints allow the designer to specify desired component proximities or to restrict translation or rotation of components based on a global origin or set of coordinate axes, or relative to other component locations or orientations. The layout of components from a cordless power drill illustrates the algorithm.

The multi-criteria facilities layout problem can be formulated as a quadratic assignment model that can handle multiple qualitative and quantitative factors in the objective function. Some studies have shown that the techniques and tools of facilities layout problems can equally be applied for the layout design of user interface components in human-computer interface. This paper presents an alternate approach, which handles multiple qualitative and quantitative factors in a different manner separately in the objective function to obtain the initial layouts. The proposed approach also consists of a layout procedure, in which the pair of facilities with the least composite criterion value has been selected to be placed far apart in the layout to generate an initial layout in the construction procedure. The results of the proposed approach are compared with that of an existing approach which handles a number of qualitative and quantitative factors in the same manner as in the objective function to obtain the initial layouts for the example task of the user interface components layout problem under consideration.

Abstract:
We propose a new aperiodic pixel layout based on the Ammann-Beenker tiling. It is uniformly three-colorable and uses only two simple pixel shapes, making it advantageous over other irregular layouts for color imaging. The existing Penrose pixel layout, which is another aperiodic pixel layout in rhombus Penrose tiling, also has the same properties. However, the Penrose pixel layout uses 36-degree and 72-degree rhombus pixel shapes, while the Ammann-Beenker pixel layout uses square and 45-degree rhombus pixel shapes. Hence the manufacture of Ammann-Beenker pixels is much more feasible than that of Penrose. We evaluate the performance of Ammann-Beenker pixel layout with two problems: super-resolution and demosaicking. Experimental results show that Ammann-Beenker pixel layout outperforms square one and is highly competitive with Penrose one.

The facility layout problem (FLP) is one of the most important classic industrial engineering and production management problems that have attracted the attention of many researchers over the last few decades. Poor production facility layout planning can result in additional operational costs; one of them is the cost of material handling. Although crucial, FLP is a challenging issue to resolve. A unique method is needed depending on the constraint, case study, and layout type. This research was conducted in order to improve the existing layout of PT. XYZ to minimize material handling costs. The layout type in this case is the Open-field layout problem (OFLP). A genetic algorithm is proposed to optimize the layout. The result is 18.1% material handling costs can be reduced.

Work is described which is concerned with the application of knowledge-based and emergent-order programming techniques to conceptual layout problems in the field of large made-to-order products. The aim of this work has been to develop a prototype for computer aided design (CAD) tools that manipulate and analyse a product's topology, rather than its precise geometry. Features of the system include: working prototypes of a generic layout-oriented product model database schema and a layout design process. A knowledge-based system is used to advise the designer on optimal layout strategies and then, after layouts have been generated, to provide advice and assistance in the selection of the final layout.

CV. Rasya Jaya is a traditional fishing boat manufacturing company located in Padang Seurahet, Kec. Johan Pahlawan, Aceh Barat Regency. The facility layout of CV. Rasya Jaya has several workstations that are not in the correct location for the production process or the relationship between related rooms. This results in inefficient and ineffective material handling, as well as reduced worker comfort. The poorly organized facilities also contribute to production constraints. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the production facility layout at CV. Rasya Jaya. The goal is to provide an alternative design for the production facility layout that is more efficient and effective in terms of the relationship between the production process flow and minimizing material flow in the production process. The purpose of this study is to determine the optimal layout at CV. Rasya Jaya using the Blocplan algorithm. Blocplan-90 is an algorithm for solving spatial layout problems that can handle both quantitative and qualitative data. Mathematical models within the design are developed with computer applications for models that work with the limitations of workstation shapes. Based on the results of the layout design of facilities at CV. Rasya Jaya, three main layouts were created: office layout, facility layout, and production layout. The total area of the three layouts is 1739 m2.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop a mathematical model for the design of robust layout for unequal area-dynamic facility layout problem with flexible bay structure (UA-DFLP with FBS) and test the suitability of generated robust layout in a dynamic environment. Design/methodology/approach This research adopts formulation of a mathematical model for generating a single layout for unequal area facility layout problems with flexible bay structure under dynamic environment. The formulated model for the robust layout formation is solved by developing a simulated annealing algorithm. The proposed robust approach model for UA-DFLP with FBS is validated by conducting numerical experiments on standard UA-DFLPs reported in the literature. The suitability of the generated robust layout in a dynamic environment is tested with total penalty cost criteria. Findings The proposed model has given a better solution for some UA-DFLPs with FBS in comparison with the adaptive approach’s solution reported in the literature. The total penalty cost is within the specified limit given in the literature, for most of the layouts generated for UA-DFLPs with FBS. In the proposed model, there is no rearrangement of facilities in various periods of planning horizon and thus no disruptions in operations. Research limitations/implications The present work has limitations that when the area and aspect ratio of the facilities are required to change from one period to another, then it is not possible to make application of the robust approach-based formulation to the dynamic environment facility layout problems. Practical implications Rearrangement of facilities in adaptive approach disrupts the operations whereas in the proposed approach no disruption of production. The FBS approach is more suitable for layout planning where proper aisle structure is required. The solution of the proposed approach helps to create a proper aisle structure in the detailed layout plan. Thus, easy interaction of the material handling equipment, men and materials is possible. Originality/value This paper proposes a mathematical formulation for the design of robust layout for UA-FLPs with FBS in a dynamic environment and an efficient simulated annealing algorithm as its solution procedure. The proposed robust approach generates a single layout for the entire planning horizon. This approach is more useful for facilities which are difficult/sensitive to relocate in various periods of the planning horizon.

A study of people solving facility layout problems was made to estimate the effects of problem features on the quality of solutions obtained by novice and experienced subjects. An empirical experiment was conducted. Three features of these problems which were systematically varied in this study were: 1. Problem size, 2. Fraction of strong inter-departmental relationships, and 3. Fraction of departments requiring a non-standard amount of floor space. Both quantitative and subjective layout evaluations were made. It was found that layout quality was not affected by feature 3 for any values of the other features, using either evaluation method, and with either novice or experienced subjects. However, feature 2 proved to be significant for all experimental conditions, both evaluation methods, and with both subject groups. Feature 1 was a significant feature in some situations, but was not significant in others. Some differences in problem solving approaches were observed. There was a significant relationship between the design of higher quality layouts by experienced subjects and the use of a Relationship Diagram. Reducing the problem size and/or percentage of strong inter-departmental relationships in a problem may make a higher quality layout easier to achieve.

Evolutionary algorithms, such as genetic algorithms have been used in various optimization problems. In this paper, we propose to apply this algorithm to obtain the layout design/redesign in order to improve the patient flow in an outpatient clinic. Layout designs are planned considering long-term requirements whereas the layout keeps modifying as per short-term demands. Over a period of time, the layout often does not remain efficient. Therefore, there is a need for such a model that helps in decision making on layout redesigns, and it must also optimize workflow by incorporating the flow constraints. In this study, we propose to minimize the waiting times by obtaining optimal and sub-optimal layout designs. A genetic algorithm is implemented to redesign the layouts based on the changing dynamics of patient demand, clinical pathways and services offered. The workflow is simulated with current layout and optimized layouts, and the results in terms of waiting time and cycle time are compared. The study shows that when layout design or redesign incorporate the workflow and pathways along with associated constraints, improves waiting time and cycle time of patients in the outpatient clinic. The distance between the departments/locations is translated to travelling time and overall travel distance/time is minimized by rearranging the allocations of departments to the location through genetic algorithms.

Small manufacturing plants usually experience challenges of inefficiency and low production yields. These problems have previously been addressed using methods to redesign plant layouts and reduce distance between workstations. Furthermore, assessment techniques like the machine-distance matrix method have then been required to evaluate layout performance. However, these assessments that rely only on distance evaluation are severely limited. In this paper, a new model called Production-time evaluation is presented for evaluating production layout efficiency. It involves computing the estimated time for production at workstations, time for movement between workstations and number of units of a product manufactured. It is then applied on a case study in small furniture plant. The existing layout of the plant was extracted and the production processes for its three products were outlined. A new layout was designed and both layouts were compared using the Production-time methodology, revealing improvements in reduced production time and increased daily production capacity by up to 37% for a product.

One of the most common problems encountered in the manufacturing process is improper layout. About 30% of production time is wasted on transporting materials and products. The causes of this waste are problems in the disposition of stock and machines in production, that is, in the factory layout production of school desks became more efficient with the use of the cell layout. The result found was that with the implementation of the cell layout, there was an increase in the number of wallets produced and a reduction in the waste of materials. It is concluded that the. In this context, the production line based on the cellular layout has been an excellent ally, since the cells of this layout can improve the use of available space, without increasing costs due to major renovations or constructions. To prove such improvements, through the implementation of the cell layout, the PSL method (Systematic Layout Planning) was used, which follows steps such as data collection, analysis of necessary and available space, and factory limitations. With these stages of knowledge and analysis of the factory, it becomes possible to discard layouts that do not fit the characteristics of the company, whether related to financial resources, available space, and factory culture. Using the Chi-Square test for statistical analysis, it was possible to verify that the cell layout is an efficient optimization tool in the school desks production process, as it brought numerous benefits to the factory under studies, such as increased productivity, greater organization, and flexibility in the processes.

PT. Alpha Jaya Manunggal Mandiri is manufacturing company engaged in furniture sector. There are several problems with old layout such high material handling costs, long distances between work stations, and alternating flow. Therefore, relayout and lean manufacturing approach were carried out. Alternative layouts made using SLP method, and CORELAP. The initial steps in making alternative layouts are measuring floor area, making production flows, and measuring production standard times. Next step is forecasting product demand for next 10 years for routing sheet. Routing sheet used to determine number of machines needed to meetproduct demand. Alternative layout was created using 2 methods. Based on alternative layout, material handling costs and moving moments are calculated to find layout with minimum material handling costs and moving moments moments. The selected layout is alternative layout SLP method cause it reduces material handling costs by 50.12%, moving moments by 17.86%, and distance by 53.42%. Then lean manufacturing approach carried out to increase productivity. A simulation was carried out with Promodel and Flexsim software to simulate new and old layout to find product improvements using new layout. Based on Promodel simulation, there was decrease in the average time in system by 21.82%, decrease in the average time in operation by 22.36%, and increase in total production by 15.29%. Based on Flexsim simulation, there was increase in amount of daily production by 58.52%, and decrease in staytime by 33.47% per product. Through research, it can be concluded that layout can be implemented as new layout on springbed production floor.

The problems of physical arrangement for the organizations are relevant when have space and material movements limitations. Reviewing layouts is a way to improve the industrial production process. Therefore, the objective of this present academic work is to propose a layout for an ice cream factory's production, considering analysis of alternatives to increase productivity. The Systematic Layout Planning (SLP) Simplified method was used as the main tool for the construction of the layout proposal. A case study was carried out which investigates a phenomenon within a real context through an in-depth analysis of a study object. The method was used systematically and validated from the fifth step, where a qualitative comparation between the current layout and the alternative submitted. As a result, is achieved an optimized, complete, detailed layout plan that reduces 21,30% of the factory handling cost.

Abstract:
Traffic congestion and disorderly development of land will affect the development of cities. How to make efficient use of urban land is a major issue for cities. Based on this, the problems existing in the planning and construction of urban rail transit in our country were analyzed. The method of rail transit network layout, as well as the site size, site selection and spacing optimization methods were analyzed. The combinatorial network layout planning of Metro Line in a city was studied. According to the layout of rail transit stations, a layout optimization model was proposed. Three basic network layouts were used to lay down the subway lines in this city, and the site size, spacing and intersection points were planned. The effective utilization rate of urban land was increased, and people's travel time was saved, so as to provide a new idea for the layout of rail transit

The method used to solve this problem is the BLOCPLAN method. This method can solve facility layout problems in CV Madu Apiari Mutiara production houses with the level of close relationship, area requirements, taking into account the distance of material movement and final layout. The area on CV. Madu Apiari Mutiara is 100 m2, the total area requirement is 70.48 m2. There are 3 alternative layouts in the BLOCPLAN method, the proposed layout chosen is based on the R-Score value which is close to 1, namely the 2nd layout with a material movement distance efficiency of 8.1 meters or 20.9%.

Pipe routing and clamp layout for aeroengine are NP-hard computational problems and complex engineering design processes. Besides space constraints and engineering rules, there are assembly constraints between pipes and clamps, which usually lead to repeatedly modifications between pipe routing and clamp layout designs. In order to solve the problems of assembly constraints and design coupling between them, an integrated optimization method for pipe routing and clamp layout is proposed. To this end, the MOALO (multiobjective ant lion optimizer) algorithm is modified by introducing the levy flight strategy to improve the global search performance and convergence speed, and it is further used as a basic computation tool. The integrated optimization method takes pipe and clamp as a whole system and then solves the Pareto solution set of pipe-clamp layouts by using improved MOALO, where the pipe path, clamp position, and rotation angle are selected as decision variables and are further optimized. Inspired by engineering experience, a clamp-based pipe path mechanism considering regular nodes is established to deal with assembly constraint problem. The proposed method comprehensively considers engineering rules of pipe routing and clamp layout and realizes the overall layout optimization of pipe-clamp system while guaranteeing the assembly constraints between pipes and clamps. Finally, some numerical computations and routing examples are conducted to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method.

The author examines contemporary architectural and landscape layouts, the dioramas at the highest artistic level, using the latest innovative technologies and materials, modern technological advances in the field of manufacturing layout for achieving a qualitatively new technical, aesthetic and artistic level. The article discusses the importance of the production of the layout as an object of aesthetic and artistic value and the role of the layout work in the professional education of designers. The author investigates the importance of prototyping as a special kind of creative activity that reflects the social and moral problems of human life. There are observed the changes in the social and economic conditions of the architect, designer and desktop publisher, which require further improvement of the layout of the case and the introduction of advanced methods, techniques and hardware in architectural work and layout. Dynamic facility layout problems involve devising the optimal layout for each different production period. This article studies unequal-area dynamic facility layout problems under fuzzy random environment to minimize the sum of the material handling costs and rearrangement costs. For a more general situation, a novel model of unequal-area dynamic facility layout problems is proposed on the basis of fuzzy random theory, in which uncertain demands are characterized by fuzzy random variables. Unequal-area dynamic facility layout problems are one of the non-deterministic polynomial-time hard problems. Therefore, a hybrid particle swarm optimization and simulated annealing algorithm is innovated to solve the proposed unequal-area dynamic facility layout problems model under fuzzy random environment, in which the shapes and areas of facilities are changed dynamically. Two facility-swapping methods and two local search methods help hybrid algorithm escape from local optima, allowing a more reliable solution. Moreover, a new shifting method is developed to prevent the spatial overlapping between adjacent facilities and save material handling costs. The performance of the hybrid algorithm is confirmed by some test problems available. Finally, the proposed method is extended to a facility layout planning of a new aircraft assembly shop floor. Computational results show that the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed method, in sharp comparison with other approaches.

In this paper, we propose a variant of the QAP-based facility layout problem: the fixed-point facility layout problem (FFLP). .Based on Ant Colony algorithm , we design the modified ant algorithm for solving the general facility layout problem (GFLP). In addition, we also design the ant algorithm for FFLP by increasing the operator of data preprocessing. Analyze the impact of the different parameters values on the results by a lot of data testing. Experimental results show that the algorithm has strong capability of global search and rapid speed of convergence.

Nesting of two-dimensional patterns on a given raw sheet has applications in a number of industries. It is a common problem often faced by designers in the shipbuilding, garment making, blanking die design, glass and wood industries. This paper presents a new two-stage layout approach for nesting two-dimensional patterns by using the self-organization assisted layout and simulated annealing. The proposed nesting approach consists of two stages: initial layout stage and layout improvement stage. This heuristic algorithm generates a ‘good’ initial layout by using the self-organization assisted layout (SOAL) algorithm and then improves the layout by using the simulated annealing (SA) algorithm. Some examples are treated for showing the effectiveness of this approach in nesting the two-dimensional irregular patterns with and without holes.

Parallel genetic algorithms techniques have been used in a variety of computer engineering and science areas. This paper presents a parallel genetic algorithm to solve the site layout problem with unequal-size and constrained facilities. The problem involves coordinating the use of limited space to accommodate temporary facilities subject to geometric constraints. The problem is characterised by affinity weights used to model transportation costs between facilities, and by geometric constraints between relative positions of facilities on site. The algorithm is parallelised based on a message passing SPMD architecture using parallel search and chromosomes migration. The algorithm is tested on a variety of layout problems to illustrate its performance. In specific, in the case of: (1) loosely versus tightly constrained layouts with equal levels of interaction between facilities, (2) loosely versus tightly packed layouts with variable levels of interactions between facilities, and (3) loosely versus tightly constrained layouts. Favorable results are reported.
