Abstract:
Recent scholarship on the manuscript libraries of North Africa has substantially increased the amount of literature available for analysis of the formative period in Islamic law, particularly for the nascent Malikite school. Students of Islamic law are now in a position, for instance, to begin a re-assessment of the 9th century, the vital transition period between the ancient schools of the 7th and 8th centuries, and the establishment of the classical schools in the 10th and 11th centuries.1 Not only will these new texts make the process of establishment of the classical schools clearer, they will also provide a much stronger basis for the study of earlier centuries, throwing into question the canonical status that has been granted to early legal texts by Western and traditional Muslim scholars alike.

Abstract:
AbstractThe notables of Ottoman Egypt were in part a rentier class: one which collected "rents" by holding (and exchanging and inheriting) tax farms, waqf-funded offices, and soldiers' wages and rations. Often the imperial government's efforts to reassert control over these offices and revenues took the form of cutting off the payment of soldiers' wages to "children and dependents." Yet a threat to rescind some of these "rents" was understood as a threat to the entire rentier class, and evoked a vigorous response from the 'ulamā'. Their juridical arguments in defense of the status quo made use of the legal concept of irsād (sultanic waqf). Irsāds, which began to be established in the sixth/twelfth century, were endowments of state revenue land by the rulers in support of religious and public works. This essay, based on literary and legal sources, manuscript and printed, traces the history of the concept of irsād from its origin to the Ottoman era, and shows how, in Ottoman Egypt, it was used to justify the political and economic position of the notables.

Abstract:
This paper uses the libraries of two prominent Azharī scholars of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as a window to the literary horizons of Islamic scholarship at the cusp of the print revolution. A comparative analysis of the two libraries’ holdings in law, theology, philosophy, literature, and Quranic exegesis reveals that the late manuscript tradition was overwhelmingly focused on a small number of curriculum texts and extensive commentaries on them, while ignoring most of the works that we today consider the classics of these fields. Only in the early twentieth century were these classics rediscovered and popularized through print. Further, the vast majority of the printed works in the two libraries was produced in Egypt, but they also contained significant numbers of works from Istanbul, Iran, and India. Books printed in Europe, however, were nearly absent.

Abstract:
In the coming year 2023, a round date is celebrated in Russian Oriental studies — 120 years since the birth of Isidor M. Lurie (1903–2023), a Leningrad Egyptologist, historian of law and public relations in ancient Egypt. In the article, based on materials from the archives of the Moscow Egyptologist Tatiana N. Savelyeva (Institute of Oriental Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences), the author reflects on the legacy and tragic fate of the scholar. The formation of Lurie as an academic began in the Leningrad Egyptological Circle. Subsequently, he went to work in the Hermitage, where he worked together with his wife Militsa E. Mathieu and prominent Soviet orientalists Nataliia D. Flitner, Igor M. Dyakonov, Boris B. Piotrovsky and others. Especially warm relations connected him with Moscow Egyptologists Tatiana N. Savelieva and Tatiana V. Stepugina. Lurie wrote many works on the problems of ancient Egyptian legislation, together with Militsa E. Mathieu, he published an anthology in ancient Egyptian cursive writing. Lurie openly argued with Vasily V. Struve, rejecting his theory of slavery in the ancient East, and took an active part in the publication of the first volume of World History (1955). The author dwells in detail on the last tragic stage of the scholar’s biography, when his monograph “Essays on Ancient Egyptian Law” was being prepared for publication. Circumstances developed in such a way that the Moscow Sector of the Institute of Oriental Studies became the supervising organization of said book. Lurie could not personally take part in the discussion, because at that time his health was seriously undermined. Nevertheless, by the beginning of June 1957, he managed to submit the final version of the manuscript. However, the sharply negative review received by his monograph crossed out the authors’ hopes and led to his premature death. In this regard, the author raises the question of the moral position of the scholar.

Abstract:
The increasing demand for freshwater supplies and the effects of climate change in arid and hyper-arid regions are pushing governments to explore new water resources for food security assurance. Groundwater is one of the most valuable water resources in these regions, which are facing water scarcity due to climatic conditions and limited rainfall. In this manuscript, we provide an integrated approach of remote sensing, geographic information systems, and analytical hierarchical process (AHP) to identify the groundwater potential zone in the central Eastern Desert, Egypt. A knowledge-driven GIS-technique-based method for distinguishing groundwater potential zones used multi-criteria decision analysis and AHP. Ten factors influencing groundwater were considered in this study, including elevation, slope steepness, rainfall, drainage density, lineament density, the distance from major fractures, land use/land cover, lithology, soil type, and the distance from the channel network. Three classes of groundwater prospective zones were identified, namely good potential (3.5%), moderate potential (7.8%), and poor potential (88.6%) zones. Well data from the study area were used to cross-validate the results with 82.5% accuracy. During the last 8 years, the static water level of the Quaternary alluvium aquifer greatly decreased (14 m) due to excessive over pumping in the El-Dir area, with no recorded recharges reaching this site. Since 1997, there has been a noticeable decline in major rainfall storms as a result of climate change. The current study introduces a cost-effective multidisciplinary approach to exploring groundwater resources, especially in arid environments. Moreover, a significant modern recharge for shallow groundwater aquifers is taking place, even in hyper-arid conditions.

Abstract:
Tissue engineering bioreactors have been used in order to achieve production of artificial tissue, increasing cell proliferation capacity and yield and/or in vitro tissue/disease modelling. Although it is still discussing how to obtain functional and vascular tissue with these bioreactors, preclinical and clinical studies are ongoing. Tissue engineering bioreactors have been used as lab-scale bioreactors until now. Crucial potential application areas can be created by increasing the production capacity and bioprocess efficiency of these bioreactors. In this review, recent bioreactor technologies such as spinner flask, rotating wall/bed, hollow fiber membrane, perfusion and mechanical stimuli bioreactors are briefly presented in terms of their potential applications in medical field especially in the scope of scale-up approaches such as bubble column, stirred tank, membrane, air lift, fluidized packed and bed bioreactors. Abstract:
Not much is known about the organization of the trade between Egypt and India in Roman times. Roman law is obviously well documented in surviving texts of various sorts. Trade practices in the Indian Ocean routes are sporadically known from surviving manuscripts. Actual organizational documents are practically unavailable with the rare exception of the Muziris Papyrus. The Papyrus, dated from the mid-second century CE, known also as the Vienna Papyrus, was first published in 1985. It deals with the finance and organization of trade on the route between Alexandria and Muziris in India. It adds a new dimension to our knowledge of the organizational practices of Eurasia trade in antiquity and is in fact the best source available up until the era of the Cairo Geniza, almost a millennium later. There is an ongoing debate about its nature in the papyrology literature. I will provide my own analysis of the papyrus based on legal history, economic analysis of law, and institutional economics theory. I will evaluate its nature as a loan or agency contract, as a standard form template, and as a forerunner of the sea loan and the commenda.

Abstract:
The concept of the greenhouse effect has yet to receive adequate historical attention. Although most writing ahout the subject is concerned with current scientific or policy issues, a small but growing fraction of the literature contains at least some historical material, which, as this chapter shows for the case of Joseph Fourier, is largely unreliable. Jean Baptiste Joseph Fourier is best known today for his Fourier series, a widely used mathematical technique in which complex functions can be represented by a series of sines and cosines. He is known among physicists and historians of physics for his book Théorie analytique de la chaleur (1822), an elegant but not very precise work that Lord Kelvin described as “a great mathematical poem.” Most of his contemporaries knew him as an administrator, Egyptologist, and scientist. Fourier’s fortunes rose and fell with the political tides. He was a mathematics teacher, a secret policeman, a political prisoner (twice), governor of Egypt, prefect of Isère and Rhône, friend of Napoleon, baron, outcast, and perpetual member and secretary of the French Academy of Sciences. Most people writing on the history of the greenhouse effect merely cite in passing Fourier’s descriptive memoir of 1827 as the “first” to compare the heating of the Earth’s atmosphere to the action of glass in a greenhouse. There is usually no evidence that they have read Fourier’s original papers or manuscripts (in French) or have searched beyond the obvious secondary sources. Nor are most authors aware that Fourier’s paper, usually cited as 1827, was actually read to the Académie Royale des Sciences in 1824, published that same year in the Annales de Chimie et de Physique, and translated into English in the American Journal of Science in 1837! No one cites Fourier’s earlier references to greenhouses in his magnum opus of 1822 and in his earlier papers. Nor do they identify the subject of terrestrial temperatures as a key motivating factor in all of Fourier’s theoretical and experimental work on heat. Moreover, existing accounts assume far too much continuity in scientific understanding of the greenhouse effect from Fourier to today.
