Abstract:
Lauraceae is a group of tropical plants with a wide distribution. The abundance and species richness of the Lauraceae family includes the under to the upper canopy of the forest. The Lauraceae family can be utilized in various sectors, especially economically. Limiting characters as a significance in the Lauraceae classification was needed to provide additional information regarding taxon grouping. This research aimed to study epidermal characteristics, leaf venation variations, and the diversity of Lauraceae species under different forest environmental conditions. The research procedure involved: collecting ecological field data and morphological identification using a purposive sampling method based on the presence of species. Soil sampling and environmental microclimate were measured on each plot. The anatomical process was carried out by recording characters. Correlation between environmental factors and plant targets used canonical correspondence analysis. The kinship between members of Lauraceae was expressed in a dendrogram. The result of this study showed that Lauraceae could live at various elevations. The analysis data indicated differences in environmental factors that affect the existence of Lauraceae species. Leaf venation studies support clustering in the family using characters such as primary, secondary, tertiary veins, and areola. Observation of leaf venation can be used as a taxonomic significance in the family Lauraceae. Epidermal cell walls in leaf samples are straight, curved shallow, deep, and sharp. Other characters that can be found are anomocytic, laterocytic, and brachyparasitic types of stomata, with stellate and glandless trichomes The anatomical dendrogram separated Lauraceae into clusters on a similarity coefficient scale.

Abstract:
Lauraceae is a large family of woody plants with high ecological and economic value. The tribal and generic division and phylogenetic relationship of Lauraceae have long been controversial. Based on morphological and molecular evidence, phylogenetic relationships within the Cinnamomeae, Laureae and Perseeae tribes, also called ‘the Core Lauraceae’, have arisen particular attention. In this review, we comprehensively collated the literatures on the phylogeny of Lauraceae published in recent years and summarized progress made in molecular systematic researches employing gene fragments, chloroplast genomes and DNA barcodings analyses. We clarified the phylogenetic relationships and main controversies of ‘the Core Lauraceae’, the systemic position of fuzzy genera (Neocinnamomum, Caryodaphnopsis and Cassytha) and the development of chloroplast genome and DNA barcodes. We further suggested and proposed the whole genome analysis and different inflorescence types would be possible to provide more information for further research on phylogenetic relationships and taxonomy of Lauraceae.

Generic delimitations among the Asian members of the Persea group, including the recently described genus Alseodaphnopsis, are discussed. These genera, with the exception of Alseodaphnopsis, are characterized by reproductive characters. A study of flowers of Alseodaphnopsis species found that Alseodaphnopsis species have unisexual flowers and that Alseodaphnopsis is better defined by its unisexual flowers than by vegetative characters. This is the first report of the presence of unisexual flowers in any member of the Persea group.

Abstract:
AbstractThe Lauraceae family is predominantly found in Asia and in the rainforests of the Americas, and consists mostly of aromatic trees. Being an essential oil producer, this family is used in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. This work presents a systematic review of the chemical composition and bioactivity of the essential oils from the Lauraceae family. Medline, Scielo, Web of Science, Lilacs, and Scopus were employed to identify articles published between 2000 and 2018, using “Lauraceae”, “essential oil”, and “biological activity” as key words. From 177 studies identified, 53 met the inclusion criteria. These studies indicated a predominance of the compounds β-caryophyllene and 1,8-cineole in Lauraceae species, and highlighted the antioxidant, antifungal, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory activities. Essential oils extracted from this family thus have high potential for pharmacological applications.

Abstract:
Approaches as homology, construction of taxa, and phylogeny reconstruction can be contextualized and investigated through a historical and current connection between systematics and philosophy. The present thesis defends this scientific-philosophical connection, having as study case both the Ocotea complex, which embraces 13 genera and 750 species predominantly Neotropical, and the Ocotea indecora group, with 20 species and centre of diversity in the Atlantic forest from Southeastern Brazil. The chapter 1 discusses the conceptualization of taxa and homologies (taxic and transformative) as both individuals and natural kinds (or homeostatic property cluster kinds). Although these conceptualizations are not mutually exclusive metaphysically, the perspective of natural kinds is endorsed, whereas that of individuals challenged, based on the motivation for empirical-pragmatic and theoretical-explanatory aspects in systematics and evolution. The chapter 2 focuses on the renaissance of morphology in phylogenetic systematics based on two theories of truth in epistemology, i.e., coherence and correspondence, calling for a unification of both theories from a fundherentist theory of epistemic justification of hypotheses of phylogenetic relationship. The role and meaning of morphology are also discussed in the context of separate and combined analyses, paleontology, natural kinds, character concept, homology, synapomorphy, semaphoront, modularity, and taxonomy. The renaissance of morphology is not only dependent on a scientific-philosophical perspective but it is also dependent on a political, economic, social, and educational reform in contemporary systematics. The chapter 3 is a phylogeny of the Ocotea complex with combined analysis of morphology and ITS nuclear ribosomal region. The role and meaning of morphological and molecular evidence, separate and combined analyses, as well as modularity and homology are discussed. Subclades within the Ocotea complex are inferred and delimited by morphological synapomorphies. A perspective of phylogenetic classification of the genera of the Ocotea complex is provided. The chapter 4 treats of taxonomic and nomenclatural changes in the O. indecora group, basically synonyms, lectotypifications, and a new combination. The chapter 5 is a revision of O. indecora group based on the analysis of ca. 550 collections. Identification key, descriptions, as well as comments on its circumscription, distribution, habitat, phenology, and taxonomic relationships of its species are provided.

Abstract:
This study aimed to test the monophyletism of Mezilaurus and its relation within the \"Mezilaurus group\" clade (sensu Rohwer & Rudolph 2005), including more taxa than the previous treatments, and to revise the morphological boundaries between the species of the genus. The \"Mezilaurus group\" had emerged as monophyletic in previous phylogenies, with Anaueria, Chlorocardium, Mezilaurus, Sextonia, and Williamodendron. The work was based in the molecular markers trnH-psbA and ITS of nine Mezilaurus species, and 15 species from the outgroup. Parsimony and Bayesian analysis were performed with the markers both separately and combined. The results demonstrate that the \"Mezilaurus group\" is not monophyletic and uncertain position of Chlorocardium and Anaueria. The Mezilauroids, containing Mezilaurus, Sextonia, and Williamodendron, arose as monophyletic, although the Mezilaurus genus, as currently defined, is not monophyletic and M. mahuba emerged as sister of Sextonia. Therefore, it was necessary to remove M. mahuba of its circumscription, and reinstate this species as Clinostemon. Based on this circunscription, were carried out the taxonomic revisions of Mezilaurus and Clinostemon, based on collecting botanical specimens in expeditions, and analisys of 550 specimens of exsiccates from about 60 herbaria. Mezilaurus (15 species) and Clinostemon (1 species) have rythmic branching with distally clustered leaves, bisexual flowers, three fertile stamens, representing the third androecial whorl, 2-locular anthers, fruit with a minute discoid cupule, and persistent tepals. However, Clinostemon has recurved anters and one par of glands at the base of filaments. Synonymizations, lectotypifications, description of four new species of Mezilaurus to science, keys, morphologic descriptions, fenological aspects and conservation, taxonomic commentaries and ilustrations are presented for the two genera.

Depression is a disabling and recurrent disease whose clinical treatment is related to modulations in monoaminergic systems in various brain areas. Riparina II (ripII), alkamide isolated from unripe fruit of Aniba riparia, has shown previously antidepressant-like effects in animal behavioral models. Thus, in order to investigate the potential antidepressant ripII, behavioral experiments were performed as the forced swim, tail suspension and open field tests. To assess the involvement of monoaminergic system, animals were pretreated with specific antagonists to 5-HT1A-, 5-HT2A/2C-, and 5-HT3-serotonin (5-HT) receptors, to D1- and D2-dopamine (DA) receptors and to 1- and 2-noradrenaline (NA) receptors in the forced swimming test. Furthermore, animals pretreated with ripII and submitted to the forced swim test had their brain areas such as hippocampus, striatum and prefrontal cortex removed for detection of monoamine levels in HPLC electrochemical or to carry out the experiments of oxidative stress. In the oxidative stress assays we investigated enzymatic activities of superoxide dismutase, measured the levels of reduced glutathione (GSH) and nitrite/nitrate, and lipid peroxidation degree. RipII was acutely administered orally at a dose of 50 mg/kg in all tests. The results showed that ripII presented antidepressant effect on the forced swim and tail suspension tests suggesting that this effect is specific, since the animals showed no changes in locomotor activity in open field test. In the evaluation of monoaminergic systems, the results showed that the antagonists SCH23390 (D1), sulpiride (D2), prazosin (1), NAN-190 (5-HT1A) and ondansentron (5-HT3) reversed the immobility time of ripII on the forced swim test suggesting the involvement of these receptors for the antidepressant effect of ripII, while no change of this effect in the presence of the antagonists yohimbine (2) and ritanserin (5-HT2A/2C) was observed, suggesting non-participation of these receptors on the drug effect. The prior administration of ripII before the forced swimming, reversed the increased levels of lipid peroxidation and increased levels of GSH in hippocampus, striatum and prefrontal cortex. In conclusion, the study suggests a modulating action exerted by ripII on the functioning of the noradrenergic, dopaminergic and serotonergic levels in the brain, as a mechanism for the antidepressant effect in the forced swimming test, as well as the participation of direct or indirect antioxidant properties of this drug through the ability to modify the neuronal response to oxidative stress.

Abstract:
Laurus nobilis l.

Abstract:
Tea tree oil (TTO) is the essential oil of tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia or M. linariifolia, Myrtaceae). Adulteration of TTO has become more apparent in recent years. Adulteration occurs with single essential oil components (e.g., sabinene from pine oil), waste products derived from other essential oils such as pine (Pinus spp., Pinaceae), eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus and other Eucalyptus spp., Myrtaceae), and camphor (Cinnamomum camphora, Lauraceae) oils, or with essential oils from other Melaleuca species and the closely related genus Leptospermum. This Laboratory Guidance Document presents a review of the various analytical technologies used to differentiate between authentic tea tree oil and essential oils containing adulterating materials. This document can be used in conjunction with the Tea Tree Oil Botanical Adulterants Bulletin published by the ABC-AHP-NCNPR Botanical Adulterants Prevention Program in 2017.
