Abstract:

Abstract This essay introduces Latina/o/x studies for a biblical studies audience. It examines crucial themes that bridge Latina/o/x studies and biblical studies, themes such as identity and difference with special attention to ethnicity and race; also migration with attention to homing, diaspora, transnationalism, and citizenship. The place of Latina/o/x studies in relevant Hebrew Bible and New Testament scholarship on these topics is also discussed. Ultimately this essay argues that Latina/o/x studies’ epistemological commitments to complexity, relationality, particularity, and collaborative knowledge-making can help ground critical interpretive approaches in biblical studies. This essay also imagines a way that biblical studies—capaciously encompassing the study of Jewish and Christian literature in the ancient world as well as Jewish and Christian biblical reception and rejection histories, and the very category of scriptures more broadly—could deepen Latina/o/x studies own thinking about canon formation and history.

Abstract:

This study used descriptive statistics to complicate the national narrative of Latina/o/x student college-going trends and aims to provide directions for future research on Latina/o/x students in the community college. Taking a state-by-state perspective, this study examined whether Latina/o/x college students enrolled in community colleges at higher rates than four-year colleges. The data for this study derived primarily from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) enrollment survey for all states and sectors of higher education for the 2012-2013 academic year. We used geographic information systems (GIS) to spatially analyze and compare proportions of Latina/o/x undergraduate enrollments between sectors within states, then across states. Our analysis disaggregated enrollment data by state to reveal important variations among Latina/o/x student enrollments at community colleges across the U.S. In so doing, we aim to inform the work of researchers, policy makers, administrators and educators in efforts to support the educational pathways of Latina/o/x students in the U.S.

Abstract:

This article examines the foundations of Latina/o/x excellence as a culturally-embedded practice born, taught, and cultivated in the home by the family members of Latina/o/x high school students. The research team conducted a phenomenological study on excellence in the home, school and community of Latina/o/x youth in Southern California. In this study, we examined the definition and source of excellence in the homes of Latina/o/x high school students through a Lotería Card Project inspired by artist, teacher, and professor, Dr. Luis-Genaro Garcia. Findings demonstrate that excellence involves meeting and excelling expectations in the home, is learned through intergenerational knowledge and lived experience, and is grounded in reciprocity. We offer suggestions to educators on how to learn about excellence in the lives of Latina/o/x students and their families.

Abstract:

This article builds on previous studies that establish urban high school contexts that Latina/o/x students likely navigate as under-resourced and deficit. Guided by the frameworks of community-oriented teachers of Color and nepantleras, this study takes an asset-based approach to examine how Latina/o/x educators fostered college aspirations and how they developed college-going structures to support college aspirations of Latina/o/x students. Findings clarify that through self-reflection and collaboration, teachers engaged in college information workshops, college exploration assignments, and supported students with applying to extracurricular internships. The study proposes the concept of community-oriented nepantlera educators who aim to develop a bridge between high school and college for Latina/o/x first-generation college students.

Abstract:

This article emerges from the collaborative work of Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) scholars and administrators. From their perspectives as acting HSI leaders, the authors examine research/programs/practices [relevant to their institutions] pertaining to attracting, preparing, employing, and retaining Latina/o/x/Hispanic teachers. Research and programs noted here identify challenges, facilitators, and recommendations for improving Latina/o/x/Hispanic educational outcomes and for increasing the number of Latina/o/x/Hispanic teachers. Increasing the number of Latina/o/x/Hispanic teachers involves processes that are circular and iterative; encompassing their educational pathways from early schooling experiences to the more advanced stage of the teaching workplace.

Abstract:

We propose that the profession is theoretically at a point of convergence between CRT and LatCrit. Both theories are united in the production of knowledge to dismantle oppression. This article provides a brief review of CRT and a comprehensive understanding of LatCrit as a starting point for critical social work education perspectives. We discuss implications for social work education by broadening the racial discourse to include Latinas/os/x and suggest critical solutions and adaptations to current social work pedagogy to better prepare students to enter the social work field and respond to this growing population. We provide recommendations for reevaluating social work and find an exit from the loop of “band-aid” interventions that lack a fundamental basis for addressing the underlying causes of trauma, stress, and racism. We provide concrete examples for incorporating LatCrit into social work education, practice. We close by calling on the professions leading organizations, NASW and CSWE, to release statements addressing the recent assault on CRT (and LatCrit by way of its extension of CRT) and join other social work organizations in condemning the unfair attacks on CRT if social work is committed to the Grand Challenge to Eliminate Racism.

Abstract:

Abstract In the 1970s and 1980s, Puerto Rican and Chicana/o/x radicals from across the United States developed a sophisticated theory of fascism as part of a broader effort to defend themselves against government repression and apply the lessons of the rightward trajectories of many Latin American countries. In the process, they built panethnic alliances that helped spur the emergence of Latina/o/x identity as it is commonly understood in the twenty-first century. This article uses the Movimiento de Liberación Nacional (National Liberation Movement, or MLN) as a case study of this broader process because of its binational character and its persistent willingness to grapple with both the theory and practice of fascism and anti-fascism in the United States and in Latin America. While the MLN abandoned its own panethnic structure in the early 1980s, its legacy of Latina/o/x struggle against far right and white nationalist forces persists into the present moment.

Este artigo se propõe a explorar a historiografia literária da América Latina (AL) sob uma perspectiva crítica que supõe, por hipótese, a recorrência do uso de dicotomias como elemento que permeia e constrange a formação discursiva tecida na escrita da história do continente. Em face do quadro histórico de colonialidade que persiste como sentido do fenômeno social e cultural “latino-americano”, a historiografia literária se depara com a problemática de ordem da estética identitária: a situação de dependência histórica em que estamos colocados diante do mundo europeu – o nosso “labirinto de dependência” – é revivida no uso do léxico dualista internalizado que prolonga, com efeito, uma relação assimétrica com o pensamento eurocêntrico. Na produção literária de perspectiva culturalista da Latino-América, o recorrido binarismo acentuado residente nos debates envolvendo os conceitos “originalidade X cópia”, “modernidade X atraso”, “autonomia X dependência” e “civilização x barbárie” têm re-atualizado a dependência em sua dimensão cultural: a definição de identidades ainda sob o molde da alteridade dos modelos europeus. O foco deste texto é refletir sobre os vínculos entre natureza, colonialidade e Direitos Humanos na leitura do filósofo argentino Enrique Dussel. Assim, questionamos qual a contribuição que os Direitos Humanos podem oferecer à luz da crítica de Enrique Dussel para pensar tais processos excludentes de reprodução do capital na América Latina? Em que medida o pensamento latino-americano pode contribuir de forma radical? Qual a razão para a natureza ser apropriada de forma mercantil na modernidade? Para responder tais questões, organizamos o trabalho em quatro momentos: no primeiro momento, apresentaremos a “crítica” dusseliana aos Direitos Humanos na América Latina; no segundo momento, analisaremos as relações entre capitalismo e colonialidade das quais a modernidade cumpriu etapa decisiva para apropriação mercantil da natureza. No terceiro, situaremos a sua contribuição acerca do direito vigente x direito utópico em sua aproximação crítica para os Direitos Humanos realizada pelo pensador argentino. Por fim, indicaremos a contribuição política de Dussel para uma crítica a ordem social capitalista, para outra ordem social, capaz de garantir o direito à vida e ao ambiente na América Latina.

Abstract:

This article engages an important, but difficult conversation about the erasure of indigeneity in narratives, curriculum, identities, and racial projects that uphold settler colonial logics that fall under the rubric of Hispanic, Latina/o/x, and Chicana/o/x. These settler colonial logics include violence by these groupings against Indigenous people, or indios, that has been part of Mexican and U.S. history in the Southwest. We examine Hispanic, Latina/o/x, and Chicana/o/x settlers’ complicity with myths that support white settler futurity, including through social studies curricula and contemporary discourses of the U.S. as a nation of immigrants. The problematics of Hispanidad and Latinidad are also engaged as part of officialized U.S. state regulation and as an expression of mestizaje based on indigenism (indigenismo). Indigenismo worked hand-in-hand with mestizaje and functioned not so much as a celebration of racial mixture, but as state eugenicist programs of Indigenous erasure throughout Latin America, and by extension in Latino communities in the U.S. Finally, we provide diverse examples of how this process works to advance a theory and praxis of Critical Latinx Indigeneities to decolonize Latinidad and mestizaje in order to envision Indigenous futurities within and outside of the Latinized entanglements of the present.

Abstract:

Positionality is an often overlooked but strategic practice for analyzing race and racism within the organizational bounds of predominantly White institutions of higher education. Positionality is critical self-reflection that uncovers the tensions and areas of strength found in relationships among the researcher, the research topic, the study participants, and the data analysis process. I argue that the researcher's practice of interrogating and articulating their personal and professional knowledge, values, beliefs, experiences, and embedded assumptions about race and racism can also be applied to a practitioner who plans to engage in dismantling systemic racial inequities in higher education. This chapter will illustrate how individuals embedded within institutions of higher education can interrogate their own positions within racist organizational contexts; attend to power dynamics as educational leaders, narrators, and subjects of inquiry; and commit to transformational practice that can address Latina/o/x educational inequities.

O presente artigo problematiza a relação progresso/desenvolvimento x buen vivir na América Latina, especialmente a partir da conformação dos postulados autóctones na edificação de uma nova ordem jurídica, com as Constituições plurinacionais e ecocêntricas do Equador e da Bolívia. Para tanto, pretende-se apresentar alígeras considerações acerca do ideário do progresso e de seu assentamento na América Latina; o surgimento de uma base ético-filosófica alternativa, de origem indígena que adentrou a esfera política até sua consolidação como regime de direito e projeto político e; o debate acerca das contradições que esse novo projeto enfrenta, notadamente pela manutenção das premissas neoliberais, relacionadas ao desenvolvimento, que se traduzem na atividade extrativista. Abstract:

In the 1960s, topless entertainment became legal in San Francisco, although cross-dressing continued to be criminalized. This article documents queer Latina/x visual and performance cultures of San Francisco’s strip club industry during this critical moment. It employs visual and performance analyses that draw from ethnographic interviews and archival research about three Latinas who performed as exotic dancers during this period, two of whom were out transsexuals: Roxanne Lorraine Alegria, Vicki Starr, and Lola Raquel. Engaging Marcia Ochoa’s notion of “spectacular femininities” and Juana María Rodríguez’s theory of “queer gesture,” the article maps out a queer Latina/x herstoriography about the early days of topless entertainment in San Francisco. It demonstrates how the transgressive practices of these Latina performers enrich genealogies of queer and Latina/x performance and visual cultures since the 1960s. It thus contributes to the expansion and intersection of the fields of performance studies, Latina/x studies, and feminist, gender, and sexuality studies. These fields and their intertwinings offer critical tools to resist the sexism, homophobia, racism, transphobia, and whorephobia that pervade every level of society, as well as the cultural amnesia to which San Francisco has been increasingly prone due to its incessant gentrification and growing technocracy since the early 2010s. RESUMEN Este artículo documenta las culturas visuales y de performance latinas/x queer de los clubes de striptease de San Francisco durante un momento crítico en la historia de la ciudad. En la década de 1960, los shows en topless se legalizaron en San Francisco, aunque el travestismo se continuó criminalizando. Otálvaro-Hormillosa emplea análisis visuales y de performance que se basan en entrevistas etnográficas e investigación de archivo sobre tres latinas que actuaron como bailarinas exóticas durante este período, dos de las cuales reconocían públicamente que eran transexuales: Roxanne Lorraine Alegria, Vicki Starr y Lola Raquel. En diálogo con la noción de “feminidades espectaculares” de Marcia Ochoa y la teoría de “gestos queer” de Juana María Rodríguez, Otálvaro-Hormillosa describe una historiografía latina/x queer propiamente femenina sobre los primeros días del entretenimiento en topless en San Francisco. El artículo demuestra cómo las prácticas transgresoras de estas intérpretes latinas enriquecen las genealogías de las culturas visuales y de performance queer y latinas/x desde los años sesenta. Engajando a noção de “feminilidades espetaculares” de Marcia Ochoa e a teoria do “gesto queer” de Juana María Rodríguez, Otálvaro-Hormillosa mapeia uma herstoriografia queer latina/x sobre os sobre os primórdios do entretenimento topless em São Francisco. O artigo demonstra como as práticas transgressivas dessas artistas latinas enriquecem as genealogias das culturas visual e de performance queer e latina/x desde os anos 1960. This essay critically assesses the shift from Latina/o to Latinx to articulate new formations of language, history, and cultural politics. Taking cue from Suzanne Oboler’s foundational 1995 book Ethnic Labels, Latino Lives: Identity and the Politics of (Re)Presentation in the United States, it further asks what’s at stake in adopting new labels and discarding those preceding them, particularly for attending to the lives and histories of individuals incessantly impacted by matters related to gender and sexuality. While recognizing the important representational work the X does, the essay also troubles an easy embrace of it by asking what the X crosses out or eliminates from consideration within contemporary identity politics.

Le collezioni di miracoli mariani allora disponibili sono sia il frutto di una tradizione di opere universalmente riconosciute che narrano fatti prodigiosi permessi dall’intermediazione della Vergine Maria, sia il risultato di nuove aggiunte ai temi più tradizionali. Inoltre, alle collezioni trasmesse in lingua latina, si affiancano anche altre raccolte in volgare scaturite non solo dalla penna di nuovi ecclesiastici o monaci, ma anche da quelle di devoti laici, assumendo così aspetti e finalità del tutto nuove. Neste artigo, temos o objetivo de discutir como Rutílio Tauro Emiliano Paládio (séc. IV-V d.C.) reescreve a tradição agronômica da literatura latina. Como discutiremos, isso ocorre porque, primeiramente, no livro XV de seu Opus agriculturae, ele se dedica a dar feições poéticas ao assunto do enxerto arbóreo, assim como fizera Virgílio em Geórgicas II, 69-82. Em segundo lugar, quando insere esse mesmo livro – majoritariamente escrito sob a forma de dísticos elegíacos – em meio a um tratado técnico prosístico, Paládio repercute procedimentos antes adotados por Lúcio Júnio Moderato Columela (séc. I d.C.) para o livro X de seu De re rustica. Contudo, sempre introduzindo adaptações e remodelagens atinentes às suas escolhas, o autor de Opus agriculturae renova a tradição de escrita multissecular em que se insere.

Abstract:

Through the analysis of an 18-month ethnography at an exotic dance club located in the Northeastern United States (referred to as Playpen), I uncover how Latina exotic dancers manage their participation in exotic dance by deploying constructions of Latinidad as embodied cues. I focus on Playpen’s weekly event, “Latina Night,” to demonstrate how racialized, sexualized, and gendered constructs relative to Latinidad are produced and regulated in this exotic dance setting. Study participants draw on embodied markers to negotiate how their bodies are read. Those markers include nationality-based appeals, time elapsed since migration, and the ability to express constructions of Latinidad through dance performance. I draw on intersectionality as a conceptual tool, filtered through a sensibility to Latina/o/x lives and experiences, to analyze the nuances of racialization as experienced by Latinas. This approach destabilizes the U.S. black–white racial binary and opens intersectionality to a more nuanced understanding of the production of Latinidad. By approaching racialization as an embodied phenomenon, I elucidate how bodily markers, beyond skin color, become imbued with racialized meaning and condition racialized erotic capital. No less important is how participants draw on racialized, gendered, and sexualized tropes to benefit racialized erotic capital.

This article highlights the role of community among Latina/o/x students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) at 2- and 4-year Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI). Community-based perspectives are often missing from traditional STEM disciplinary contexts; however, our Community-Centered STEM Identity model recognizes how Latinx students develop STEM identities by grounding, engaging, and bridging community. A araruta é uma planta rizomatosa, pertencente à ordem Zingiberales. A espécie é considerada rústica, proveniente da América Latina e se encontra de forma nativa nas matas venezuelanas. Há carência de estudos científicos com a cultura, principalmente com relação ao cultivo e conservação pós-colheita. Diante disso, objetivou-se com esse trabalho verificar a viabilidade da produção de mudas de araruta do tipo Comum e Seta em função do tempo e temperatura de armazenamento de rizomas. O experimento foi conduzido em delineamento inteiramente casualizado em esquema fatorial 2 x 3 x 3, sendo os fatores estudados dois tipos de araruta, três temperaturas e três épocas de armazenamento. Durante o armazenamento foi avaliada a massa dos rizomas e após o período de estocagem os rizomas foram utilizados para produção de mudas. Não é viável o armazenamento de rizomas de araruta a baixas temperaturas para produção de mudas. O mais adequado é o armazenamento em temperatura ambiente. O tempo de armazenamento dos rizomas influencia na brotação, sendo que as mudas oriundas de rizomas armazenados a trinta dias obtiveram 100% de brotação, após esse período à brotação de rizomas é reduzida.

E um segundo momento que ilustra o enquadramento que teve a casa moderna na Colômbia como uma mercadoria por causa da estratégia de desenvolvimento econômico que o Estado planejou por meio de uma concentração dos recursos no financiamento, produção e construção de habitação social para tirar o país da crise enquadrando a casa no âmbito da acumulação do capital.</span></p>

Introdução: A escassez de órgãos para transplante vem preocupando a sociedade no mundo todo, sendo que a recusa familiar é apontada como um dos fatores limitantes para suprir a crescente demanda do número de transplantes. Objetivos: Este estudo teve como objetivo identificar a produção científica nacional e internacional sobre a recusa familiar; apresentar a produção científica identificada segundo a quantidade, ano de publicação, país de origem e categorizar a produção científica segundo os temas identificados. Método: Para a realização do estudo bibliométrico, utilizaram-se as bases de dados MEDLINE e LILACS, usando como descritores: doação de órgãos x recusa família ou organ donation x family refusal. Resultados: Foram encontrados 52 artigos na MEDLINE e um artigo na LILACS também indexado na MEDLINE. O estudo mostrou que os Estados Unidos foram o principal país que publicou produção científica sobre o assunto (48,1%), e foi também o país que mais produziu trabalhos sobre recusa familiar na doação de órgãos (21,1%). Conclusão: Os resultados obtidos mostram que a produção cientifica internacional sobre a recusa familiar tem aumentado, e os Estados Unidos foi o país que mais publicou trabalhos. Por outro lado, países da América Latina, como o Brasil, têm produzido poucos trabalhos sobre o tema (1,9%), evidenciando a necessidade de aumentar a produção científica nesse campo.

Dos manuscritos da Poética de Aristóteles que chegaram aos nossos dias, na condição de fonte primária subsistente (codd.), temos apenas dois textos gregos (o que consta no codex Parisinus Graecus 1741 (=A), proveniente do séc. X/XI, e o que consta no codex Riccardianus 46 (=B), do séc. XII), a tradução latina de G. de Moerbeke (codices Etonensis 129 (=O), de 1300, e Toletanus bibl. Capit. 47.10 (= T), de 1280), e a tradução árabe de Abu-Bishr Matta, feita a partir da tradução siríaca desaparecida. O que pretendo, nesse artigo, é descrever o percurso do assim chamado Manuscrito Alfa da Poética de Aristóteles, ou seja, a que consta no codex Parisinus Graecus 1741 entre as páginas 184 e 199. Pretendo ainda fazer alusão à importância de um estudo sobre as condições em que se dá a apreensão do texto antigo. De fato, a leitura que fazemos hoje da Poética é composta da variação de sentido inerente ao entendimento, o que é óbvio, e da variação, muitas vezes sutil e, via de regra, determinante, do que foi efetivamente escrito, há tantos séculos, com o estilete de um ou outro escriba.
