Abstract:
The countries of Latin America have suffered through numerous foreign interventions and domestic wars in the nearly two centuries that have followed its independence. These conflicts have also given rise to mass mobilizations of middle-class professionals, women, peasants, urban workers, and Indians, who sought to carve out a more active public role in the new states that emerged from these struggles. In some cases, elites and their military allies violently repressed the newly emerging forces. Recent research has begun to place greater emphasis on the lives of common people and the interventions they had on the larger events of the day. Eight chapters written by different scholars show the the importance of the actions of civilians in wars in Latin America. Chapters describing civilians' roles and lives through wars in Latin America are supplemented by recommended print and online resources for further study, a glossary defining important terms and concepts, and a timeline putting events into a chronological context.

Abstract:
Two issues of Latin American political philosophy have attracted considerable attention. The first is controversy about human rights, prompted by the European expansions that took place during the Iberian Conquest and colonial ruling that followed, and today, by the phenomenon of contemporary globalization. The second issue concerns the identity of Latin Americans and their descendants abroad—namely, who they are as a people, and what they should be culturally and ethnically or racially. These questions have prompted Latin American philosophical theorizing since the early nineteenth-century Wars of Independence, to this day.

Abstract:
This article focuses on the historiography of emancipation in Latin America. Latin American independence was part of a widespread challenge to European colonialism in the Americas beginning in the late eighteenth century with the American Revolution. Historians now recognize that slavery and emancipation were central issues in the struggles over empire and independence. To understand how anti-colonial rebellions in the Iberian world undermined slavery and set the stage for emancipation, it is important to look at them in relation to the earlier wars of independence that transformed the British and the French Atlantic empires.
