Abstract:
In the summer of 2018, the theatre company Hemhâl, which I co-founded with Nezaket Erden and Hakan Emre Ünal, travelled to a small village in southern Turkey. The main reason for our trip was to realize Nezaket's dream of taking her widely acclaimed solo performance, Dirmit, Dear Shameless Death, to the village where her extended family live. Furthermore, we thought that this performance could resonate with the villagers since it is an adaptation of a Turkish novel by Latife Tekin which talks about the struggles and internal conflicts of a migrant family moving from a small rural village to the big city.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper seeks to explore how the style of translation reframes an author’s changing image. In light of the transformation of Latife Tekin from being considered an author of the poor and dispossessed with whom she identifies to being acknowledged as a translator who channels the marginal world of the dispossessed people into the mainstream, as evidenced in various paratextual and metatextual discourses in Turkey, the study focuses on the style of the English translation of Tekin’s Buzdan Kılıçlar (Swords of Ice). The study underlines that an author’s ontological narrative, which feeds into his or her image, may impact the style of the translation of his or her work. Noting that the style of translation may serve as a way of responding to an author’s ontological narrative, the study highlights that the stylistic features (i.e., italics and quotation marks) added to the translation of Buzdan Kılıçlar appear to be in interplay with the narratives that prepared the ground for Tekin’s self-identification as a translator. Ultimately, the study points out that those stylistic features foreground not only the cultural other against Turkey’s modern and secular establishment but also the Oriental other against Western modernity.

Abstract:
Rapid depopulation of rural areas caused overpopulation in urban areas. This led to cultural changes and made it inevitably necessary to define the new folk and folklore by the folklorists. The fact that Alan Dundes defines the public as "any group of people whatsoever who share at least one common factor" has enabled the folklorists to examine the cultural products that have emerged in cities as a result of the developments and changes in regard to migration and urbanization.Latife Tekin, one of the prominent authors in Turkish literature after 1980, published her second book called Berji Kristin: Tales from the Garbage Hills in 1984. The book is a story of a slum. The compliance processes of the slum dwellers and the struggle with such issues as the wind, unemployment, and poverty have been narrated through the cultural products. Based on Alan Dundes' perspective from the articles called 'Who are the folk?' and 'What is folklore?', the novel has adopted the point of view that "each group has its own folklore," and some distinctive traditions that squatters call their own have been determined in the novel. The emergence of the traditions due to the fact that the slum dwellers cannot transform into urbanites and yet cannot remain provincial either establishes the primary topic of the present article.Extended English abstract is in the end of PDF (TURKISH) file.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Çalışma boyunca her iki göçmen grubunun İngilizce yeterlik seviyeleri, gelir düzeyleri, vatandaşlığa kabul edilme oranları, siyasi parti eğilimleri vb. karşılaştırılarak söz konusu varsayımın yanlış olduğunu ortaya çıkarılmaktadır.

Abstract:
Latife Tekin’s novel, Berji Kristin: Tales from the Garbage Hills (1984), tells the story of a migrant community, struggling to build squatter houses in the peripheries of an industrialized city. Although the name of the city is not explicitly mentioned in the novel, in an interview Tekin refers to Istanbul as the setting of her narrative. The community described by Tekin builds a unique relationship with garbage in this urban space, which has already been discussed in various contexts extending from urbanization to magical realism. This article aims to contibute to these discussions by foregrounding Tekin’s avoidance to name poverty and by exploring her way of narrating the community’s perpetual recovery. Not only does the article analyze how Tekin writes against sterilized life styles by presenting garbage as resource, but it also suggests that this narrative approach turns out to be even more conspicuous and relevant with the recent rise of street waste pickers in Turkey. The article pursues this discussion by drawing on influential scholars of waste and literature, namely Mary Douglas, Susan Signe Morrison, and William Viney, by performing close readings of the novel, and by engaging in the secondary literature on Tekin’s work. Therefore, the article examines the squatters’ fight against all destructive forces including nature, state-run demolitions, and various communities which try to settle on the same garbage hills. Then it illustrates how Istanbul as an unnamed setting, poverty as an unnamed condition, and folk medicine as a miraculous solution to health problems caused by harsh urban conditions contribute to Tekin’s emphasis on the community’s endless recoveries from all kinds of destructions and illnesses.
