Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by a progressive degeneration of motor neurons in the spinal cord, brainstem and cortex determining muscle atrophy and paralysis. There is substantial clinical and experimental evidence indicating the presence of cognitive dysfunction at least in a subpopulation of patients with ALS. An important contribution in the evaluation of cognitive dysfunction and related neural mechanisms in ALS can be provided by event-related potentials (ERPs) because this technique could be administered to patients with severe motor disability, not requiring verbal or motor responses. The main ERPs studies in ALS patients found changes in electrophysiological parameters reflecting an alteration of the control processes of attention. Therefore, objective of this study was to evaluate the attention functioning in a group of patients with ALS using the ERPs approach. In the first experiment we used a distraction paradigm to evaluate the ability of change detection, focusing and re-orientation of attention. The results have revealed in ALS patients a modification of the amplitude and the latency of the N200, the P300 and the re-orienting negativity (RON) components. This could suggest an alteration of the endogenous mechanism of detection of change resulting in a reduction of the allocation and the re-orientation of attentional resources. In the second experiment we used a Bayesian approach to estimate the single trial P300 recorded with an oddball paradigm in a group of ALS patients in the initial stage of the disease. The analysis of single trial, unlike the classical analysis, showed an alteration of both the latency and the amplitude of the P300 in the patient group compared to the control group, suggesting in ALS patients at the initial stages of the disease the presence of neurophysiological alterations of attentional functions. In conclusion, the ERPs results support the hypothesis that ALS is a multisystem disease with involvement of cognitive functions. Moreover, these data confirm the usefulness and effectiveness of the electrophysiological approach in early detection and monitoring of cognitive functions of ALS patients.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Multilateral wells have been proven over decades and have developed into a reliable and cost effective approach to mature field rejuvenation and extended commercial viability. This paper will discuss case studies demonstrating a number of techniques used to create infill multilateral wells in existing fields with a high level of reliability and repeatability. Techniques reviewed will cover cutting and pulling production casing to drill and case a new mainbore versus sidetracking and adding laterals to an existing mainbore. Discussion will also cover completion designs that tie new laterals into existing production casing providing significantly greater reservoir contact. Temporary isolation of high water-cut laterals brought into production later in the well's life through bespoke completion designs will also be discussed. Case studies will include discussion of workover operations, isolation methods, and lateral creation systems. Where available, resulting field performance improvements will also be discussed. In Norway, slot recoveries are commonly performed by cutting and pulling the 10-3/4" casing, redrilling a new mainbore, and running new casing. This enables junction placement closer to unswept zones and easier lateral drilling to targets. It does have drawbacks, however, related to the additional time required to pull the subsea xmas tree and challenges associated with pulling casing. In 2019, Norway successfully completed a 10-3/4" retrofit installation, whereas a sidetrack was made from the 10-3/4" and an 8-5/8" expandable liner was run down into the reservoir pay zone where two new laterals were created. The 8-5/8" liner saved time otherwise spent having to drill the section down to the payzone from the laterals. These wells have a TAML Level 5 isolated junction, Autonomous Inflow Control Devices (AICDs) in each lateral, and an intelligent completion interface across the junction, enabling active flow management and monitoring of both branches. In Asia, infill laterals were added to existing wellbores by sidetracking 9-5/8" casing and tying production back to the original mainbore. These dual laterals were completed with intelligent completions to enable lateral flow management and monitoring of both laterals. In Australia, dual laterals were created in a similar fashion; laterals are added to existing wells; however, a novel approach was used to manage water from existing lower mainbore laterals whereby they are shut in at completion and opened later when the new lateral is watered out. The older lateral now produces at lower water cut given the time allowed for water coning in the lateral to relax. Using this practice, production is alternated back and forth between the two laterals. In the Middle East, an older well has been converted from TAML Level 4 to Level 5 in order to prevent detected gas migrating into the mainbore at the junction. This conversion of a cemented junction well has enabled production to resume on this well. The well was converted to incorporate an intelligent completion to enable flow control of each lateral. This paper intends to provide insights into the various mature field re-entry methods for multilateral well construction, and a review of the current technology capabilities and well designs through the review of multiple case histories.

Abstract:
It is known that the collapse strength of complex three dimensional structures is hard to evaluate accurately with elastic analysis, and more accurate results require the use of inelastic analysis. A cylinder-to-cylinder acute lateral intersection is one of basic structures of process plants. It is known that a high stress concentration occurs at an acute lateral more than 90 deg-lateral. In general, the area replacement method and the elastic analysis are applied for the design of acute lateral. However, these results may provide overly-conservative designs. In the previous work, the authors proposed CSRF (Collapse Strength Reduction Factor) method. The CSRF was defined as a ratio of the simple cylinder collapse pressure to the cylinder-to-cylinder collapse pressure. The proposed CSRF method provided more reasonable design than the elastic analysis. In this paper, the concept of the CSRF was redefined by using the maximum allowable working pressure. The CSRF were evaluated on the 45 deg and 90 deg-laterals based on the area replacement method, the elastic analysis, the limit load analysis and the elastic plastic analysis to study the collapse characteristics of 45 deg-laterals. The 45 deg-laterals are weaker than 90 deg-laterals, and inelastic analysis provides greater strength of 45 deg-laterals than elastic analysis. The results of elastic plastic analysis showed that overly-large plastic strain occurs on 45 deg-laterals. This plastic strain should be evaluated in addition to the collapse pressure.

Abstract:
Abstract Drilling a multilateral well is generally recommended for several reasons such as achieving higher productivity indices and improving recovery in tight, low-permeable zones. While the many benefits of multilateral wells are attractive, they also have drawbacks which make these wells challenging. A key challenge is how to effectively stimulate all the laterals after they have been drilled. This paper presents the application of a unique intervention technique in a multilateral well to stimulate several laterals in a single run. To increase reservoir contact area the operator drilled a multilateral well composed of 4 legs. This was carried out despite the absence of proven ways to stimulate each lateral individually. This intervention would also present the following challenges: Well displacement and stimulation would require multiple re-entries into each lateral, all conducted from a drilling rig. All the laterals were known to branch off from the low side of the bore, so individual lateral and main-bore selection would be complex. Extended reach laterals require accurate friction lockup modelling and mitigations. The unique solution presented in this paper includes the use of real-time Hybrid cable coiled tubing (RTHCT) technology. This incorporates a hybrid cable installed in the coiled tubing (CT) string and a modular sensing bottom-hole assembly (MSBHA). Electrically controlled indexing tool, inclination sensor, tool-face sensor, and hydraulic knuckle joint were used as part of the BHA to enable real-time diagnostics and dynamic controls from surface to successfully enter the lateral legs. The MSBHA enabled the orientation of the BHA electrically to any position required using software to determine and control the exact position of the BHA. This paper presents a solution to all the above-mentioned challenges. It discusses the successful implementation of the RTHCT to displace and stimulate all the 4 laterals in a single CT trip in less than seven days, pumping over 7,000 bbls of various chemical systems and covering an open-hole length of 11,176 ft. Unlike other technologies, the RTHCT technology confirmed entries into the laterals without the need to tag the bottom of the lateral, saving substantial time. Enabling re-entry in these 4 laterals represented a world record translating into major efficiency improvements and cost savings for the project. This intervention also represented the first time in Kuwait that more than 2 laterals have been accessed in a CT run.

Abstract:
Abstract Reservoir X is a marginal tight gas condensate reservoir located in Abu Dhabi with permeability of less than 0.05 mD. The field was conventionally developed with a few single horizontal wells, though sharp production decline was observed due to rapid pressure depletion. This study investigates the impact of converting the existing single horizontal wells into single long horizontal, dual laterals, triple laterals, fishbone design and hydraulic fracturing in improving well productivity. The existing wells design modifications were planned using a near reservoir simulator. The study evaluated the impact of length, trajectory, number of laterals and perforation intervals. For Single, dual, and triple lateral wells, additional simulation study with hydraulic fracturing was carried out. To evaluate and obtain effective comparisons, sector models with LGR was built to improve the simulation accuracy in areas near the wellbore. The study conducted a detailed investigation into the impact of various well designs on the well productivity. It was observed that maximizing the reservoir contact and targeting areas with high gas saturation led to significant increase in the well productivity. The simulation results revealed that longer laterals led to higher gas production rates. Dual lateral wells showed improved productivity when compared to single lateral wells. This incremental gain in the production was attributed to increased contact with the reservoir. The triple lateral well design yielded higher productivity compared to single and dual lateral wells. Hydraulic fracturing for single, dual, and triple lateral wells showed significant improvement in the gas production rates and reduced condensate banking near the wellbore. A detailed investigation into the fishbone design was carried out, this involved running sensitivity runs by varying the number of branches. Fishbone design showed considerable increment in production when compared to other well designs This paper demonstrates that increasing the reservoir contact and targeting specific areas of the reservoir with high gas saturation can lead to significant increase in the well productivity. The study also reveals that having longer and multiple laterals in the well leads to higher production rates. Hydraulic fracturing led to higher production gains. Fishbone well design with its multiple branches showed the most production again when compared to other well designs.

Abstract:
Abstract The use of multi-lateral wells started in the mid-1990s in particular in Canada, and they have since been used in many countries. However, few papers on multi-lateral wells focus on their production performances, thus what could be expected from such wells in terms of production and recovery factor is not clear and this paper will attempt to address that gap. Taking advantage of public data, the production performances of various multi-lateral wells in Western Canada have been studied. In the cases reviewed in this paper, these wells always target a single formation; they have been used in a variety of fields and reservoirs, mostly for primary production but also for polymer flooding in some cases. Multiple examples will be provided, mostly in heavy oil reservoirs, and production performances will be compared to nearby horizontal and vertical wells whenever possible. From the more classical dual and tri-lateral to more complex architectures with 7 or 8 laterals, and the more exotic, with laterals drilled from laterals, the paper will present the architecture and performances of these complex wells and of some fields that have been developed almost exclusively with multi-lateral wells. Interestingly, multi-lateral wells have not been used much for secondary or tertiary recovery, probably due to the difficulty of controlling water production after breakthrough. However, field results suggest that this may not be such a difficult proposition. One of the most remarkable wells producing a 1,250 cp oil under polymer flood has achieved a cumulative production of over 3MM bbl, which puts it among the top producers in Canada. Although multi-lateral wells have been in use for over 25 years, very few papers have been devoted to the description of their production performances. This paper will bring some clarity on these aspects. It is hoped that this paper will encourage operators to reconsider the use of multi-lateral wells in their fields.

Abstract:
The 45-degree laterals are widely used in pressure vessel nozzles and piping branch connections. Though the pressure design is always important for the 45-degree laterals, it is not a simple work because it has severe stress concentrations, it is difficult to weld and inspect, and there are some discrepancy between a conventional design and design by linear and nonlinear finite element analysis. In previous papers, authors studied the characteristics of both 90 degree tee and 45 degree laterals using an inelastic finite element analysis based on simplified shell element models and proposed Collapse Strength Reduction Factor (CSRF) based on an inelastic analysis were compared. In this paper, results of the burst test of 45-degree lateral and 90 degree intersection were shown. The fracture surface of 45-degree lateral was different from that of 90-degree intersection. These experimental results are compared with the inelastic finite element analysis results focusing on the local stress and strain behaviors. It was found that the magnitude of the local strain affected the burst pressure. Consideration should be given on the local failure due to excessive plastic strain under high stress triaxiality for the design of the 45-degree lateral by inelastic analysis.

Pile Stability Analysis in Soft or Loose Soils: Guidance on Foundation Design Assumptions with Respect to Loose or Soft Soil Effects on Pile Lateral Capacity and Stability. Abstract:
The design of laterally loaded piles is often done in practice using the p-y method with API p-y curves representing the behavior of soil at discretized points along the pile length. To account for pile-soil-pile interaction in pile groups, AASHTO (2020) proposes the use of p-multipliers to modify the p-y curves. In this research, we explored, in depth, the design of lateral loaded piles and pile groups using both the Finite Element (FE) method and the p-y method to determine under what conditions pile stability problems were likely to occur. The analyses considered a wide range of design scenarios, including pile diameters ranging from 0.36 m (14.17 inches) to 1.0 m (39.37 inches), pile lengths ranging from 10 m (32.81 ft) to 20 m (65.62 ft), uniform and multilayered soil profiles containing weak soil layers of loose sand or normally consolidated (NC) clay, lateral load eccentricity ranging from 0 m to 10 m (32.81 ft), combined axial and lateral loads, three different pile group configurations (1×5, 2×5, and 3×5), pile spacings ranging from 3 to 5 times the pile diameter, two different load directions (“strong” direction and “weak” direction), and two different pile cap types (free-standing and soil-supported pile caps). Based on the FEA results, we proposed new p-y curve equations for clay and sand. We also examined the behavior of the individual piles in the pile groups and found that the moment applied to the pile cap is partly transferred to the individual piles as moments, which is contrary to the assumption often made that moments are fully absorbed by axial loads on the group piles. This weakens the response of the piles to lateral loading because a smaller lateral pressure is required to produce a given deflection when moments are transferred to the head of the piles as moments. When the p-y method is used without consideration of the transferred moments, unconservative designs result. Based on the FEA results, we proposed both a new set of p-multipliers and a new method to use when moment distribution between piles is not known, using pile efficiency instead to calculate the total capacity of pile groups.
