Devriese, L. "Staarten couperen: modeverschijnsel in de late 19de eeuw geïntroduceerd bij het Belgisch trekpaard." Vlaams Diergeneeskundig Tijdschrift 87, no. 1 (February 28, 2018): 47–52. http://dx.doi.org/10.21825/vdt.v87i1.16095.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Back pain is a kind of discomfort that frequently develops during pregnancy, especially among pregnant women in late pregnancy or those with a history of back pain in previous pregnancy. Prenatal yoga can relief back pain discomfort since it promotes good posture and stretch the spine's central nervous system. This study aims to determine the effect of yoga exercise on back pain among pregnant women in the third trimester. This was a pre-experimental study with one group pretest posttest design. The current study involved 30 pregnant women in the third trimester, who were assigned into the treatment group (participated in prenatal yoga exercise) and the control group (did not participate in prenatal yoga exercise), consisting of 15 samples, respectively. The study instrument applied here was Faces Pain Scale-Revised a questionnaire (FPS-R). It was found that there was a significant effect of prenatal yoga exercise to relief back pain among pregnant women in the third trimester (p less than 0.05). It can be concluded that prenatal yoga was beneficial for relieving back pain among pregnant women in the third trimester. Thus, prenatal yoga technique is considered an appropriate method for supproting the succes of pregnancy.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In the late nineteenth century, with the expansion of their harbours and the growth of transatlantic mobility, the port cities of Antwerp and Rotterdam became home to economically important and large migrant communities. In a context marked by the often-claimed rise of the nation state, when national legislation concerning nationality and citizenship was shifting, local authorities and citizens played an important but still underestimated role when it came to enforcing the naturalisation of foreign nationals. Applications for naturalisation in both Antwerp and Rotterdam were firmly rooted in the local context, and economic performance was key to the police commissar’s support of an applicant’s case towards the national authorities. By comparatively analysing individual applications for naturalisation in Antwerp and Rotterdam, this paper argues that the close relationship between the nation-state and the mechanisms of legal inclusion and exclusion on which it rested, has to be relativised.

Abstract:
Documentary and archaeological evidence concurs in placing the foundation of Marseille by colonists from Phocaea in around 600 B.C. The site can only have been chosen with an eye to its maritime commercial potential. Surrounded on the landward side by a chain of hills, the city's immediate hinterland was tiny, and only moderately fertile. Geographically, in the words of Camille Jullian, ‘Marseille … semble tourner le dos à la Provence’. But thanks to its magnificent, sheltered, deep-water harbour, now known as the Vieux-Port, the city has been a focal point for Mediterranean trade throughout its long history, and its immediate landward isolation has not affected its ability to exploit the Rhône corridor and establish commercial relations with the interior of France. Its location makes it a classic gateway community.

Abstract:
An increasing number of intensive, dense, and sustainable citrus plantations have fostered a growing interest in addressing the future challenges of citrus crops: An increase in the world’s population, climate change, and globalization. Nutrient efficiency and the absence of vigorous citrus rootstocks are required for the success of these plantation systems. The agronomic performances of the ‘Lane Late’ orange cultivar on three substandard or semi-dwarfing citrus rootstocks (Forner-Alcaide no.5 (FA5), Forner-Alcaide no.13 (FA13), and Forner-Alcaide no.41 (FA41)) were evaluated in Spain in comparison with more traditional Mediterranean citrus rootstocks (Carrizo citrange (CA), Citrus macrophylla (MP), and ‘Cleopatra’ mandarin (CL)) under a poor mineral fertilization program over six growing seasons. FA13 and FA41 induced the smallest ‘Lane Late’ trees. Although the rootstock did not induce a significant effect on the ‘Lane Late’ yield efficiency (kg m−3), the highest values were recorded for ‘Lane Late’ on MP, CL and FA13. In this sense, FA13 showed a high productive potential (kg ha−1), given the possibility of narrowing the tree spacing (smaller tree size). Regarding the use of soil nutrients, FA13 was the most efficient citrus rootstock. Thus, FA13 stands out as the most suitable citrus rootstock for more intensive and sustainable plantation systems of the ‘Lane Late’ orange under Mediterranean conditions similar to those of this study.

Abstract:
Most urban car trips register low occupancy rates, around 1.20 passengers per car. Originated in the US in the late 1960s, High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes aim to improve mobility by optimizing vehicle occupancy and thus bring on an improved traffic flow, more efficient fuel economy and better environment. Madrid benefits from a 10 year-old HOV lane that has enjoyed success in terms of its functional traffic flow parameters. Variable Message Signs indicate the HOV lane availability, although the essential information is displayed via text. The study tests the judged comprehensibility of several pictograms intended for the HOV lane referent.

Abstract:
Effect of interference competition for spawning space on spawning success of brown (Salmo trutta) and rainbow trout (S. gairdneri) was studied in the main spawning tributary of Lake Alexandrina, New Zealand. Competition was mediated through redd superimposition and severely limited the spawning success of both species. Overall spawning success, from egg deposition to fry emergence, was 2.1% for rainbow trout and 0.2% for brown trout and was dependent on time of spawning. Brown trout spawned from April to June and rainbow trout spawned from April to October. Brown trout and early spawning rainbow trout experienced poor spawning success due to severe redd superimposition by later spawning rainbows. Late spawning rainbows experienced highest spawning success. Redd superimposition by rainbow trout caused a 94% reduction in spawning success of brown trout in an experimental section of stream. Severe intraspecific competition for spawning space, through redd super-imposition, determined pattern and timing of peak rainbow fry emergence.

Abstract:
Purpose Either autogenous or allograft fascia lata frontal sling procedures can be used for the treatment of severe ptosis. We retrospectively evaluated the late outcomes of both approaches. Methods Medical records of patients who underwent frontal sling ptosis surgery between 1978 and 2000, with a follow-up of one year or more were included in the study. Success rates and the complications of the surgery for autogenous and allograft fascia lata were recorded. The results were compared statistically. Results Surgeries were performed with 82 autogenous or 43 allograft fascia lata. At last follow-up there were 71 eyes (86.6%) with good, 8 eyes (9.7%) with moderate, 3 eyes (3.7%) with poor results after autogenous fascia lata and 35 (81.4%), 3 (7%) and 5 (11.6%) after the allograft fascia lata frontal sling procedure. There was no significant difference between the two groups. Repeat surgery was carried out on three patients after autogenous and five after allograft fascia lata surgery. Two cases of preseptal cellulitis were observed, one abscess after autogenous and one lagophthalmus after allograft fascia lata sling surgery. All patients had slight edema early after surgery which resolved in a few days. Only one patient developed a hematoma at the site of the leg incision. Conclusions Although the long-term success rate with the autogenous fascia lata is slightly higher and this remains the first choice, allograft fascia lata is a good alternative in patients in whom fascia could not be harvested.

Abstract:
Aim: We report our single-center experience with the retrieval and replacement of the chronically implanted Micra transcatheter pacing system (TPS). Material and Methods: We included 6 patients with an implanted the Micra TPSs who subsequently underwent transvenous method of retrieval at our institution. The indication for device retrieval was pacemaker syndrome in two patients, battery depletion in three patients, and need for upgrade to biventricular pacing in one patient. Results: After an implantation duration of 555 ± 373 days, the overall retrieval success rate was 83.3%, 5 of 6 patients. No procedure-related adverse device events occurred. In the single patient with unsuccessful retrieval, intracardiac echocardiography revealed that the Micra TPS was embedded within the cardiac wall and surrounding tissue. After retrieval, four patients received a new Micra TPS. Conclusions: Late retrieval of an implanted Micra TPS was safe and feasible, which indicates the possibility for their safe and elective replacement with a new leadless pacing device.

Abstract:
The Real Interest Differential hypothesis, an exchange rate modelling breakthrough developed by Jeffrey Frankel (1979), was very successful at predicting variations of the exchange rate between 1974 and 1978 but failed when tested for its predictive ability between 1974 and 1988. Using a monetary model and long term bond expectations model as bases of comparison, it appears that Frankel's success was a product of a period when the genre of asset approach models were successful at predicting exchange rate fluctuations. The three asset approach models all succeed at predicting exchange rate variations in the late 1970's and all deteriorate and fail in the mid to late 1980's.

Abstract:
In their focal article, Hogan, Chamorro-Premuzic, and Kaiser (2013) define career success objectively “in terms of occupational prestige and financial attainment.” However, it is clear from the careers literature that workers in early, mid, and late career are likely to define both subjective and objective career success differently (Wang, Olson, & Shultz, 2013). Therefore, we recommend an expanded definition of career success that includes both subjective and objective measures when exploring the relationship between employability and career success across individuals' careers.

Abstract:
The best time to reverse an ileostomy is still largely unclear, however, there is growing evidence that delaying ileostomy closure may raise the risk of complications after the operation. The study's goal was to compare the outcomes of early ileostomy closure with late ileostomy closure after surgery. A prospective study was done to evaluate the results of patients who went through early ileostomy closure ( within 6 weeks) to those who had late ileostomy closure (>6 weeks). All patients above 18 years old who had stoma subsequent surgery of bowel both in emergency and elective settings. In this prospective observational study, 60 patients were randomly assigned into two groups by the SNOSE method for closure of ileostomy at different intervals of time: early ileostomy closure (<6 weeks), n=30, and late ileostomy closure (>6 weeks), n=30. During three months, all patients were monitored for surgical complications. Early closure was performed on 30 of the 60 trial participants, with the mean time for closure in the early group being 4 weeks and 7.2 weeks in the late group. The postoperative problems and hospital stay did not vary considerably. In conclusion, based on our experience in both ileostomy closure groups at varied time intervals, the early group within 6 weeks did not increase post-operative problems and morbidity. The systematic assignment of patients with temporary loop stomas to early closure may improve patient well-being. Individualization of the usual approach of reserving patients for long-term stoma care is required, and further study is needed to compare disease-specific closure success.

Abstract:
Biographical interviews with 80 women ranging in age from the late teens to the 80s (Mean Age = 46.8 years; SD = 7.8 years) elicited information concerning personality characteristics that predispose women toward achievement-striving behavior, taking into account the effects of family, friends, and role models. When asked if they had ever been in a situation where they were about to succeed and feared the success, the majority of women (91%) replied “no.” A large percentage of women (96%) did report that they wonder if their achievements are worth it and asked “success at what cost?” In addition, compared to older women, younger women were more concerned with interpersonal relationships and less concerned with competitive achievement. The reality status of the fear of success construct as well as methodological advances in its measurement are discussed.

Abstract:
The study deals with the relationship between psychosocial development and attachment in late adolescence. The aim is to examine the relationship between the success in resolving the crises of psychosocial development and attachment dimensions and to investigate the differences between attachment styles with respect to the success in resolving the crises of psychosocial development. The Questionnaire for Attachment Assessment, II revision (UPIPAV-R) and The Modified Erikson Psychosocial Stage Inventory (MEPSI) were applied on the sample of 212 students (aged 2026) of faculties and colleges situated in Belgrade. The results indicate that there is a significant relationship between attachment dimensions and the success in resolving tasks of psychosocial development, with three significantly connected pairs of structures between two sets of variables. The securely attached adolescents were significantly and consistently more successful in resolving the crises of psychosocial development in comparison with the insecurely attached adolescents. They also showed a higher level of general psychosocial matureness. Significant differences in resolving the crises of psychosocial development were obtained between adolescents with different forms of insecure attachment. Based on the success in resolving the crises of psychosocial development, 59.4% of respondents were classified in the original attachment group, including: 76.6% with secure attachment, 57.1% with preoccupied, 56.6% with dismissing and 41.3% with fearful attachment.

Abstract:
Background: The predictive value of thrombus perviousness in acute ischemic stroke (AIS), as measured by computed tomography (CT), has been intensively studied with conflicting results. In this study, we investigate the predictive potential of the novel concept of dynamic perviousness using three-dimensional (3D) volumetric evaluation of occlusive thrombi. Methods: The full thrombus volume in 65 patients with a hyperdense artery sign on non-contrast CT (NCCT), who underwent mechanical thrombectomy (MT), was segmented. Perviousness maps were computed voxel-wise for the entire thrombus volume as thrombus attenuation increase (TAI) between NCCT and CT angiography (CTA) as well as between CTA and late venous phase CT (CTV). Perviousness was analyzed for its association with NIHSS at admission, Thrombolysis In Cerebral Infarction (TICI) score, and number of MT passes. Results: The mean late-uptake TAI of thrombi with NIHSS scores greater than 21 at admission was approximately 100% higher than for lower scored NIHSS (p between 0.05 and 0.005). Concerning revascularization results, thrombi requiring less than four MT passes had ca. 80% higher group mean late-uptake TAI than clots requiring four or more passes (p = 0.03), and thrombi with TICI score III had ca. 95% higher group mean late-uptake TAI than thrombi with TICI II (p = 0.03). Standard perviousness showed no significant correlation with MT results. Conclusion: Standard thrombus perviousness of 3D clot volume is not associated with revascularization results in AIS. In contrast, dynamic perviousness assessed with a voxel-wise characterization of 3D thrombi volume may be a better predictor of MT outcomes than standard perviousness.

Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: This paper discusses the failure and success of society to decrease the adverse health effects of asbestos exposure on workers’ health in relation to scientific knowledge. METHODS: The findings are based on a narrative literature review. RESULTS: Early warnings of the adverse health effects of workplace exposure to asbestos were published already in the 1930s. Serious health effects, such as malignancies and fibrosis due to occupational asbestos exposure, were highlighted in major medical journals and textbooks in late 1960s. New technologies could detect also asbestos fibers in the lung of non-occupational exposed persons in the 1970s. The first bans for using asbestos came in the early 1970s, and more general bans by authorities came in the 1980s and continue until today. CONCLUSIONS: The rather late recognition of adverse effects of asbestos exposure in the general population and measures to decrease the exposure through more general bans came rather late. However, the very strong measures such as general bans in many countries have been a success. A Swedish study showed that the general ban and other measures have decreased the risk of malignancies due to occupational exposure. The effect of the bans on adverse effects in the general population has yet to be studied. Analysis of fibers in the lungs of persons born after the bans could be an efficient method.

Abstract:
The optimum indications for debridement, antibiotics and implant retention (DAIR) are unclear. Previous studies have demonstrated higher success rate of DAIR within one year of the primary arthroplasty. This study aimed to compare the success rate of DAIR vs revision in “early” and “late” infections to provide guidance for clinical decision making. The Prosthetic Joint Infection in Australia and New Zealand Observational (PIANO) cohort prospectively recorded PJIs between July 2014 and December 2017 in 27 hospitals. This study included PIANO patients with first time PJIs occurring after primary TKA. Treatment success was defined as the patient being alive, free from further revision and without clinical or microbiological evidence of reinfection at two years follow-up.“Early” and “late” infections were analyzed separately. Univariate analysis compared demographic and disease specific factors between the DAIR and Revision groups. Multivariate binary logistic regression identified whether treatment strategy and other risk factors were associated with treatment success in “early” and “late” infections. In 117 “early” (<1 year) infections, treatment success rate was 56% in the DAIR group and 54% in the revision group (p=0.878). No independent risk factors were associated with treatment outcome on multivariate analysis. In 134 “late” (>1 year) infections, treatment success rate was 34.4% in the DAIR group and 60.5% in the revision group (OR 3.07 p=0.006). On multivariate analysis, revision was associated with 2.47x higher odds of success (p=0.041) when compared to DAIR, patients with at least one significant co-morbidity (OR 2.27, p=0.045) or with Staphylococcus aureus PJIs (OR 2.5, p=0.042) had higher odds of failure. In “late” PJIs occurring >1 year following primary TKA, treatment strategy with revision rather than DAIR was associated with greater success. Patients with significant comorbidities and Staphylococcus aureus PJIs were at higher risk of failure regardless of treatment strategy.

Abstract The author of Afghanistan Rising responds to our critical review essays by six scholars of diverse historical expertise, from the late Ottoman and Habsburg Empires to Southeast Asia, and Islamic legal history to the political economy of the British Raj and Indo-Afghan frontier. Centering administrative and constitutional developments in Afghanistan within broader regional and global currents connecting the Balkans to Indian Ocean at the turn of the twentieth century, Ahmed reflects on what it means to write “a history that most people do not think exist.”

Abstract:
The discovery, development and exploitation of antibiotics was one of the most significant advances in medicine in the 20th century. In a golden era lasting from the 1940s to the late 1960s, antibiotic research provided mankind with a wide range of structurally diverse and effective agents for the treatment of microbial infections. Since then, the members of the order Actinomycetales, most notably the genus Streptomyces have proved to be a particularly rich source of antibiotics (Table 1) with extensive therapeutic applications, possibly because of the extra-large DNA complement of these bacteria.

Abstract:
Throughout the twentieth century, funding bodies have become a dominant force in scientific practice, influencing the success of certain types of research as well as certain types of researchers. As a late modern institution, they are part of a process of rationalization and planning in science. At the same time, however, funding bodies draw upon resources such as trust and familiarity that are usually identified as premodern.

Abstract:
Drawing on the extant literature on information and communication technologies (ICTs) in Korea, this essay identifies and discusses three factors that have contributed to Korea’s broadband achievements. The first factor is the Korean state’s long-term objectives, including policy principles. The second is regulatory decisions, including late privatization. The third factor is unique attributes of Korea, including population density and the aftermath of the Asian Financial Crisis. The essay also discusses Korea’s ICT successes alongside its ‘English Fever’.

Abstract:
AbstractBuilding on the rationalist literature on sanctions, this article argues that economic and political sanctions are a successful tool of nonproliferation policy, but that selection effects have rendered this success largely hidden. Since the late 1970s—when the United States made the threat of sanctions credible through congressional legislation and began regularly employing sanctions against proliferating states—sanctions have been ineffective in halting ongoing nuclear weapons programs, but they have succeeded in deterring states from starting nuclear weapons programs in the first place and have thus contributed to a decline in the rate of nuclear pursuit. The logic of the argument is simple: rational leaders assess the risk of sanctions before initiating a nuclear weapons program, which produces a selection effect whereby states highly vulnerable to sanctions are deterred from starting nuclear weapons programs in the first place, so long as the threat is credible. Vulnerability is a function of a state's level of economic and security dependence on the United States—states with greater dependence have more to lose from US sanctions and are more likely to be sensitive to US-sponsored norms. The end result of this selection effect is that since the late 1970s, only insulated, inward-looking regimes have pursued nuclear weapons and become the target of imposed sanctions, thus rendering the observed success rate of nonproliferation sanctions low. I find support for the argument based on statistical analysis of a global sample of countries from 1950 to 2000, an original data set of US nonproliferation sanctions episodes, and qualitative analysis of the South Korean and Taiwanese nuclear weapons programs.

Abstract:
Potamothrix vejdovskyi is one of several alien Ponto-Caspian species presently invading Europe and the New World. Its invasive success has been suggested to be dependent upon the trophic degree of the water, and this species is considered to be particularly indicative of mesotrophy (Lang & Reymond 1996). Bottom fauna surveys performed by the Swedish Fisheries Board in 1915 and 1916 and in 1933–1935 did not reveal the existence of P. vejdovskyi in Lake Mälaren, whereas extensive bottom fauna programs in the lake in 1967–1976 demonstrated a wide distribution of the species in the central, least polluted basins. Strict quantifications of the distribution of oligochaetes in those basins in 1974 showed that P. vejdovskyi then made up on average 28 % of the total abundance of oligochaetes. However, in later bottom fauna surveys in Lake Mälaren, performed by the Swedish Environment Protection Agency in 1981 and in 2009–2011), P. vejdovskyi could not be found at all. Sewage treatment around Lake Mälaren accelerated in the late 60’s and the phosphorus load is nowadays considerably lower than before treatment (about 30 % less in terms of total-P concentrations in the water). The question of why this species seems to have more or less disappeared from the lake remains unsolved.
