Abstract:
Abstract The mono-lanthanum silicide clusters LaSin (n=1-6) have been studied adopting the relativistic density functional calculation with generalized gradient approximation. Considering different spin configurations, we calculated and discussed the equilibrium geometries, charge populations, the HOMO-LUMO gaps, as well as infrared (IR) absorption spectra of LaSin (n=1-6) clusters. It is found that: the lowest-lying LaSin (n=1-6) clusters basically maintain a similar framework to the low-lying Sin+1 clusters, and the La atoms prefer the surface sites. The relative stabilities are investigated based on the calculation of fragmentation energies and, showing that LaSi2, LaSi4, and LaSi5 clusters have enhanced stabilities. Charge populations analysis shows that the charges transfer from La atom to Sin framework and the La atom acts as an electron donor. HOMO-LUMO gaps indicate that LaSi2 and LaSi5 clusters have higher chemical stabilities. IR absorption spectrum and vibrational mode analysis show that the highest frequency absorption peaks all correspond to the breathing mode of the silicon framework, and the characteristic infrared absorption peaks caused by La atom vibration, except for LaSi dimer, all appeared in the low-frequency region.

Abstract:
The laser ablation synthesis in solution (LASiS) method has been widely utilized due to its significant prospects in laser microprocessing of nanomaterials. In this study, the LASiS method with the addition of different surfactant charges (cationic CTAB, nonionic TX-100, and anionic SDS) was used to produce Au NPs. An Nd:YAG laser system at 532 nm excitation with some synthetic parameters, including different laser fluences, ablation times, and surfactant concentrations was performed. The obtained Au NPs were characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and zeta potential analyzer. The Au NPs exhibited the maximum absorption peak at around 520 nm for all samples. The color of Au NPs was changed from red to reddish by increasing the laser fluence. The surfactant charges also played different roles in the Au NPs’ growth during the synthesis process. The average sizes of Au NPs were found to be 8.5 nm, 5.5 nm, and 15.5 nm with the medium containing CTAB, TX-100, and SDS, respectively. Besides, the different surfactant charges induced different performances to protect Au NPs from agglomeration. Overall, the SDS and CTAB surfactants exhibited higher stability of the Au NPs compared to the Au NPs with TX-100 surfactant.

Abstract:
Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are well-known for their antimicrobial effects and several groups are proposing them as active agents to fight antimicrobial resistance. A wide variety of methods is available for nanoparticle synthesis, affording a broad spectrum of chemical and physical properties. In this work, we report on AgNPs produced by laser ablation synthesis in solution (LASiS), discussing the major features of this approach. Laser ablation synthesis is one of the best candidates, as compared to wet-chemical syntheses, for preparing Ag nano-antimicrobials. In fact, this method allows the preparation of stable Ag colloids in pure solvents without using either capping and stabilizing agents or reductants. LASiS produces AgNPs, which can be more suitable for medical and food-related applications where it is important to use non-toxic chemicals and materials for humans. In addition, laser ablation allows for achieving nanoparticles with different properties according to experimental laser parameters, thus influencing antibacterial mechanisms. However, the concentration obtained by laser-generated AgNP colloids is often low, and it is hard to implement them on an industrial scale. To obtain interesting concentrations for final applications, it is necessary to exploit high-energy lasers, which are quite expensive. In this review, we discuss the pros and cons of the use of laser ablation synthesis for the production of Ag antimicrobial colloids, taking into account applications in the food packaging field.

Abstract:
Designing bioactive materials, with controlled metal ion release, exerting a significant biological action and associated to low toxicity for humans, is nowadays one of the most important challenges for our community. The most looked-for nanoantimicrobials are capable of releasing metal species with defined kinetic profiles, either by slowing down or inhibiting bacterial growth and pathogenic microorganism diffusion. In this study, laser ablation synthesis in solution (LASiS) has been used to produce bioactive Ag-based nanocolloids, in isopropyl alcohol, which can be used as water-insoluble nano-reservoirs in composite materials like poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate). Infrared spectroscopy was used to evaluate the chemical state of pristine polymer and final composite material, thus providing useful information about synthesis processes, as well as storage and processing conditions. Transmission electron microscopy was exploited to study the morphology of nano-colloids, along with UV-Vis for bulk chemical characterization, highlighting the presence of spheroidal particles with average diameter around 12 nm. Electro-thermal atomic absorption spectroscopy was used to investigate metal ion release from Ag-modified products, showing a maximum release around 60 ppb, which ensures an efficient antimicrobial activity, being much lower than what recommended by health institutions. Analytical spectroscopy results were matched with bioactivity tests carried out on target microorganisms of food spoilage.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTIntermetallic ternary nanoalloys (NA) have increasingly gained prominence as excellent catalysts. But, their size, morphology and chemical compositions affect their catalytic and interfacial activities significantly. In this study, we present laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) for rapid quantitative elemental composition characterization of ternary NAs with different elemental ratios. Specifically, we use a calibration-free approach with LIBS to estimate the elemental ratios of PtCuCo ternary NAs with various stoichiometric ratios synthesized via our in-house laser ablation synthesis in solution-galvanic replacement reactions (LASiS-GRR) technique. The size and morphology of the samples are determined from transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) measurements. The LIBS quantitative estimations for the NA samples are compared with results from inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). The elemental ratio results of quantitative LIBS show good agreement with ICP-OES results, while being devoid of any external standard requirements or extensive sample preparations.

Abstract:
The aim of the study is to present the role of empirical research in the reconstruction of the linguacultural image of axiologically loaded concepts and socially determined connotations. The article relates to methodological assumptions and findings of ethnolinguistics, where the reconstruction of the conceptualisation of particular notions is based on the interpretation of three types of data: (i) the language system, (ii) questionnaires, and (iii) texts. This is the approach adopted in the report Język – wartości – polityka [Language – values – politics] (JWP 2006), and then in the Axiological Lexicon of Slavs and Their Neighbours (LASiS 1-5, 2015-2019), compiled by the team supervised by Jerzy Bartmiński. This study presents the results of a questionnaire regarding respect (Polish szacunek), conducted among one hundred students from five universities in Lublin. Respondents were asked to answer the question: “What, in your opinion, is the essence of respect?”. The data obtained from first-hand sources enable a reconstruction of the students’ image of true respect in the Polish language in an aspectual view.

This editorial discusses events that marked the period since the publication of the previous issue – the 5th International Conference on Learning Analytics and Knowledge (LAK 2015), Learning Analytics Summer Institutes (LASIs 2015), and Learning Analytics Policy Briefing in the European Parliament. This period saw releases of two important publications for system-wide implementation of learning analytics in higher education published by Jisc and the Australian Government’s Office for Learning and Teaching. An important recognition of the maturation of the field of learning analytics is the recent publication of the 2015 Google Scholar Metrics identifying the LAK proceedings as the only conference proceedings among the 20 most cited publication venues in educational technology. Building bridges for enhancing impact is another important activity for the field maturation through developing linkages of learning analytics with educational data mining, user modeling, the learning sciences, technology enhanced learning, cyber-learning, and learning at scale. This editorial also introduces a special section published in this issue dedicated to the exploration of connections between self-regulated learning and learning analytics, introduces two regular research papers featured in this issue and describes several special sections that will be published in future issues of the journal.

Abstract:
We explore the formation kinetics, optical absorption spectra, and particle size distributions of copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) formed by direct laser ablation from the bulk metal via a process we refer to as Laser Ablation Synthesis in Solution (LASiS). Comparisons are made between CuNPs formed in pure water versus those formed in the presence of 1 × 10−4 M solutions of the N-donor ligands 4,4′-bipyridine (4,4′Bipy) and 1H-5-(4-pyridyl)tetrazole (T-4Py). CuNPs formed in pure water and in the presence of 4,4′Bipy display similar UV-visible absorption spectra and very similar particle size distributions. In comparison, CuNPs formed in the presence of T-4Py display significantly different absorption properties, with the surface plasmon resonance transition blue-shifted by ∼55 nm, and a much smaller and narrower particle size distribution compared with the former samples. Based on previous literature reports, it is possible to ascribe these differences to differences in the CuNP surface oxidation states for samples prepared in the presence of T-4Py. However, an analysis of the formation kinetics of all three samples indicates near-identical behaviour.

Abstract:
Abstract A standard camera for Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) contains 50–100 photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) that occupy at least 50% of its volume. It is shielded by a thick layer of lead which makes it heavy and bulky. Replacing PMTs by silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) could significantly reduce the weight and size of a SPECT camera. However, the main obstacle is the limited size of SiPMs: even with the largest commercially available SiPM of 6 × 6 mm2 a few thousand channels would be needed to fill a camera. As a solution, we propose to use Large Area SiPM Pixels (LASiPs) which are built by summing the currents of several SiPMs into a single output. We developed a LASiP prototype summing 8 SiPMs using the MUSIC ASIC. To test the feasibility of using this solution in SPECT, we built a proof-of-concept micro camera that consisted of four of our LASiP prototypes coupled to a 40 × 40 × 8 mm3 NaI(Tl) crystal. We were able to reconstruct simple images of a 99m Tc capillary with an intrinsic spatial resolution of ∼2 mm and an energy resolution of ∼11.6%. We also simulated the system with Geant4, finding a good agreement with our experimental results. The simulations were extended to a larger camera, aiming to study the impact of pixel size, shape and noise.

Abstract:
Purpose. To compare the change of anterior corneal higher-order aberrations (HOAs) after laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK), wavefront-guided LASIK with iris registration (WF-LASIK), femtosecond laser-assisted laser in situ keratomileusis (FS-LASIK), and small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE).Methods. In a prospective study, 82 eyes underwent LASIK, 119 eyes underwent WF-LASIK, 88 eyes underwent FS-LASIK, and 170 eyes underwent SMILE surgery. HOAs were measured with Pentacam device preoperatively and 6 months after surgery. The aberrations were described as Zernike polynomials, and analysis focused on total HOAs, spherical aberration (SA), horizontal coma, and vertical coma over 6 mm diameter central corneal zone.Results. Six months postoperatively, all procedures result in increase of anterior corneal total HOAs and SA. There were no significant differences in the induced HOAs between LASIK and FS-LASIK, while SMILE induced fewer total HOAs and SA compared with LASIK and FS-LASIK. Similarly, WF-LASIK also induced less total HOAs than LASIK and FS-LASIK, but only fewer SA than FS-LASIK (P<0.05). No significant difference could be detected in the induced total HOAs and SA between SMILE and WF-LASIK, whereas SMILE induced more horizontal coma and vertical coma compared with WF-LASIK (P<0.05).Conclusion. FS-LASIK and LASIK induced comparable anterior corneal HOAs. Compared to LASIK and FS-LASIK, both SMILE and WF-LASIK showed advantages in inducing less total HOAs. In addition, SMILE also possesses better ability to reduce the induction of SA in comparison with LASIK and FS-LASIK. However, SMILE induced more horizontal coma and vertical coma compared with WF-LASIK, indicating that the centration of SMILE procedure is probably less precise than WF-LASIK.

Abstract:
Background: LASIK Xtra is a recently described technique which combines LASIK and accelerated corneal cross-linking(CXL) in the same setting. Its long-term outcome in Asians with high myopia is not well described. Objectives: To compare the efficacy, predictability and safety of LASIK Xtra with LASIK in patients with high myopia. Method: This is a retrospective study comparing 50 consecutive eyes undergoing LASIK Xtra for the correction of high myopia and/or myopic astigmatism (-6.63 to -15.50 D manifest spherical equivalent) with a matched control group of 50 eyes undergoing LASIK alone for correction of high myopia (-6.00 to -12.25 D manifest spherical equivalent). Mean follow-up was 5.7 months (range, 1.5-13.3 months) for LASIK Xtra and 3.6 months (range, 1.7-4.2 months) for LASIK only. Outcome measures included Uncorrected Distance Visual Acuity (UDVA), Corrected Distance Visual Acuity (CDVA), refraction and intraoperative and postoperative complications. Results: At post-operative 3 months, all eyes achieved UDVA of 20/40 or better, and 80.0% of LASIK Xtra eyes achieved UDVA of 20/20 or better, compared to 66.0% of LASIK only eyes (p = 0.115). Efficacy indices were 0.99±0.17 for LASIK Xtra and 0.94±0.17 for LASIK only (p = 0.164). The proportion of eyes within ±0.50 D of attempted correction was 84% in the LASIK only group and 72% in the LASIK Xtra group at post-operative 3 months (p = 0.148). Safety indices were 1.11±0.19 and 1.11±0.18 in the LASIK Xtra and LASIK only groups, respectively (p = 0.735). Conclusion: LASIK Xtra achieved comparable safety, predictability and efficacy as LASIK in patients with high myopia. Good refractive stability was attained at 6-12 months. Further long term studies are required to determine whether simultaneous CXL is able to reduce postoperative LASIK keratectasia in high-risk individuals.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Introductions: Laser in situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) is the most common refractive surgery to treat myopia. One of the most common complain after this procedure is blurry near- vision. Objectives: To evaluate the role of accommodation amplitude (AA) in myopic patients before and after LASIK and its effect to blurry near-vision in myopic patients after LASIK Methods: Patients with myopia who underwent LASIK procedure in Sriwijaya Eye Center Hospital from January to February 2018 studied prospectively. AA was assessed before and after LASIK with 1 day, 1 week and 1 month. Myopia degree, intraocular pressure (IOP), age, gender, ablation and corneal profile were also assessed. Results: A total 52 eyes from 32 patients were included. Visual acuity (VA) of all sample were significantly improve in 1 day after LASIK (p 0,001). Mean AA in myopic patients before LASIK 9,25 D and AA 1 day after LASIK were all significantly decrease into 9,00D (p 0,012) which can cause in blurry near- vision after LASIK. In 1 month followed-up, mean AA is significantly improved into 11,00 D (p 0,000) with no complain. Other factor that affect the changing AA were corneal cell density (CD), IOP and AA before LASIK. Conclusions: There is significant AA difference in myopic patients before and after LASIK. Blurry near-vision after LASIK is caused by AA adaptation mechanism after LASIK.

Abstract:
This control-matched comparative study evaluated changes in contrast sensitivity after Zyoptix tissue-saving (TS) LASIK and Planoscan standard LASIK (Technolas 217z, Bausch & Lomb) for myopia 6 months postoperatively. 102 TS LASIK-treated eyes were matched with 102 standard LASIK-treated eyes (divided into low, moderate, and high groups). There were no significant differences in refraction outcomes between the groups postoperatively. In high group, a significant reduction in contrast sensitivity after TS LASIK was found at high spatial frequencies (P<.05) under photopic conditions and at middle to high spatial frequencies (P<.05) under mesopic conditions. And significant reduction was also found in standard LASIK at high spatial frequency (P<.05) under mesopic conditions. The reduction was significantly lower in TS LASIK than that in standard LASIK at high spatial frequencies (P<.05) under mesopic conditions. TS LASIK was prone to reduce mesopic contrast sensitivity of high myopia at high spatial frequencies.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Purpose. To quantify corneal epithelial thickness changes after myopic LASIK by OCT.Methods.Epithelial thickness before and after myopic LASIK were measured by a Fourier-domain OCT system. Average central (within 1 mm diameter) and paracentral epithelial thickness (5~6 mm diameter) before and after LASIK were compared. Correlation between central epithelial thickness change and laser spherical equivalent setting was evaluated. An epithelial smoothing constant was estimated based on a mathematical model published previously.Results.Nineteen eyes from 11 subjects were included in the study. Eyes had myopic LASIK ranging from −1.69 D to −6.75 D spherical equivalent. The average central epithelial thickness was 52.6 ± 4.1 μm before LASIK and 56.2 ± 4.3 μm 3 months after LASIK (p=0.002). The average paracentral epithelial thickness was 51.6 ± 6.6 μm before LASIK and 54.8 ± 4.3 μm 3 months after LASIK (p=0.007). The change in average central epithelial thickness was correlated with laser spherical equivalent (R2= 0.40,p=0.028). The epithelial smoothing constant was estimated to be 0.46 mm.Conclusions. Corneal epithelial thickens centrally and paracentrally after myopic LASIK. The extent of epithelial remodeling correlated with the amount of LASIK correction and could be predicted by a mathematical model.

Abstract:
Purpose. To compare visual and clinical outcomes of wavefront-guided VISX CustomVue (VISX, Santa Clara, CA) LASIK and conventional LASIK. Methods. This study retrospectively evaluated 130 eyes of 65 patients, including 40 eyes of 20 patients in the CustomVue group and 90 eyes of 45 patients in conventional LASIK group. Uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity, and refractive error were measured. Higher-order aberration (HOA) were measured by WaveScan system using a Hartmann-Shack sensor as their root mean square values (RMS HO), and individual Zernike coefficients of 3rd to 4th order before and 1 year after the surgery and compared using Mann-Whitney test or Student's t-test. Results. There was no significant difference in spherical equivalent between the groups. CV eyes showed superiority in number of eyes seeing 20/20 or better. RMS HO was less in CV group than that induced by conventional LASIK (0.37 ± 0.15 µm and 0.62 ± 0.26 µm, respectively). Preoperative mean RMS HO more than 0.3 µm was associated with a decrease in postoperative HOA in CV group. CV system induced significantly less spherical aberration (0.149 ± 0.157 µm and 0.364 ± 0.284 µm, respectively, р < 0,002). Conclusions. CustomVue seems to have better uncorrected visual acuity outcomes. It generally increases HOA, but statistically significant by less, compared with conventional LASIK. The most benefits have patients with RMS HO higher than 03 µm. Key words: CustomVue, conventional LASIK, wavefront-guided LASIK.
