Full textSince the early 2000s, the lighting market is constantly growing up, pulling the Light-Emitting Diodes (LED) performance forward and pushing their cost down. LED is becoming an interesting source of light for laser pumping, between flashlamp and laser diodes. Thus, 40 years after the first demonstration, we suggest to revisit laser LED pumping. In this work, we demonstrated for the first time a Nd:YVO4 laser directly LED-pumped. LED radiance being limited, we took interest in LED-pumped luminescent concentrators. By developing Ce:YAG concentrator, we were able to overcome the LEDs irradiance by a factor of 20, leading to output irradiances similar to the laser diode ones (of the order of multi-kW/cm²). We validated the concept by pumping for the first time a Nd:YVO4 crystal and a Nd:YAG crystal with luminescent concentrators. Output energies of several mJ were obtained. In addition, we succeeded to get a passively Q-switched regime for the Nd:YAG laser by using saturable absorbers leading to unpreceded performance for a LED-pumped laser. Finally, LED-pumped concentrators pave the way for new possibilities for high-radiance source pumped media. Our first tests on titanium doped sapphire show that a laser gain with a LED pumping is achievable

Full textAmong the several applications of laser sources, some requires kilometers range propagation in the atmosphere : telemetry, guidance system or active imagery. High pulse energy improves the range of the system, but may cause permanent blindness to an observer's eyes. Hence, these applications must use laser beam which wavelength are located in the eye-safe region, ideally at the local minimum of the atmosphere absorption (1550-1650 nm). Such laser sources are already commercially available, but are not suited for the demanding military needs : compacity, electrical consumption, performance and large operating temperature range (-40°C/+60°C).My work aims to develop a laser source filling these specifications. Thanks to the collaboration with the industrial partners Fibercryst and Cilas, it focuses on the design of a compact, efficient, directly diode-pumped Er3+:YAG single cristal fiber laser for military applications. With a homemade numerical simulation of a passively Q-switched Er3+:YAG laser source, many laser emitters are experimentally designed and compared. Further studies around saturable absorbers allowed sensible improvements of the output pulse energy. This work, whose results may already be commercially interesting, may lead to new technics and architectures of erbium doped solid-state laser for better prototypes

Full textYb-doped yttrium and lutetium orthosilicates, Y2SiO5:Yb and Lu2SiO5:Yb respectively, exhibit spectroscopic properties favorable to an efficient laser operation in both high power cw and femtosecond regime. Their first diode-pumped femtosecond operation demonstration lead to exceptional performances in terms of output power and efficiency. In order to realize compact and efficient solid-state laser devices using those materials, we chose a configuration with an Yb-doped medium planar waveguide geometry, grown by liquid phase epitaxy, face-pumped by a single laser diode bar. The growth of highly doped Y2SiO5:Yb layers, within a large range of compositions and thicknesses, was demonstrated. The refractive index increase due to the substitution of the various dopants is analyzed. The layers spectroscopic properties are similar to the bulk ones, with an noticeably higher crystalline quality. The Yb ion lifetime evolution with respect to its doping shows up a particularly low decrease, proof of a low concentration of extrinsic quenching centers. The covered YSO:24%Yb waveguides exhibit lower than 0. 3dB/cm propagation losses, and provided up to 2. 9dB/cm net amplification at 1082nm with a single mode output. The realization of the first diode-pumped monolithic cw waveguide lasers was also demonstrated. For a 4% output coupler, they provided up to 340mW at 1082nm with a 14% slope efficiency

Full textIn solid-state lasers, heat generation in gain medium can introduce wave-front distorsions. The goal of my thesis is to measure thermo-optic coefficients (thermal conductivity, thermo-optic coefficient dn/dT and thermal expansion coefficient) of new laser materials allowing reaching high energy with high repetition rate. These laser materials are ytterbium doped ceramics of sesquioxides of scandium Sc2O3, lutetium Lu2O3 and yttrium Y2O3. These materials have also been tested in a free running laser oscillator: these experiments have shown the interest to work at low temperature. When driven at low temperature (cryogenic cooling), thermal properties of these materials are improved. Thermo-optical values of these materials are actually unknown in the literature, especially at low temperatures. Therefore, measuring these parameters is very important for the development of high-power lasers. Other materials have also been studied: ytterbium doped ceramics and crystals of YAG, crystals of calcium fluoride CaF2 and neodymium doped phosphate laser glass

Full textThis thesis is a study of new ytterbium-doped crystals, made for the development of efficient (and sometimes broadly tunable) lasers emitting around 1 J. Ull. The first part presents the laser performance, under high power diode pumping, of new crystals: Yb:GGG, Yb:GdCOB, Yb:BOYS (and Yb:CaBOYS), Yb:SYS and Yb:YSO. The efficiency, tunability and thermal behaviour of these materials is discussed, and illustrated (when possible) by a comparison between materials of similar properties. Thennal effects limit the scaling toward higher powers in most of these materials: a comprehensive study of the se effects is performed in the second part of this thesis. We begin this part by setting the theoretical background necessary to understand thermal and thermomechanical effects in solid state lasers. After a description of the classical techniques employed to investigate thermal effects, we describe the experimental setup we used. It is based on a commercially available Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor, and enables the measurement of the thermallens (including its aberrations) in end-pumped laser, under lasing and nonlasing conditions. We emphasize on the characteristics and limitations of this technique. Thermal lensing measurements are then reported, for the first time, in ytterbium-doped materials. Significant nonradiative effects have been demonstrated, whereas it is generally admitted that such effects are purely absent. We then explain how, thanks to a simple anâlytical model, it is possible to derive the quantum efficiency and the thermo- optical coefficient from these measurements. We also demonstrated the influence of the lasing wavelength on the thermalload, the reduction of thermal effects by the use of composite crystals, as weIl as the major role played by the photoelastic effect in the thermally-induced lens in Yb:GdCOB

Full textSince the beginning of the 2000s, LED's performance have known dramatic improvements which enable this technology to settle down in numerous application areas. Driven by the lighting market, LED are characterized by their long lifetime, their ruggedness, and their low cost per emitted optical watt. In order to go beyond LED's brightness, they can be coupled to luminescent concentrators. The first part of this work exposes the development of the first luminescent concentrator in the short-wave infrared (or SWIR corresponding to the 1.2-2.5 µm band where LED have very low powers). This work shows that the brightness of the luminescent concentrators in the SWIR exceeds by one order of magnitude LED's brightness in the same spectral range. This light source allows water detection for the agrifood industry and the inspection of silicon wafers for microelectronics. In the visible, the performance of luminescent concentrators (brightness, spectrum, price, mode of operation) offer a unique trade-off between flashlamps and laser diodes. The second part of this work investigates the use luminescent concentrators emitting in the visible to pump solid-state lasers. The compatibility of this new pumping concept is attested with transition-metals-doped crystals, cornerstone of ultrafast laser sources. For the first time, laser oscillations in free-running operation are obtained by LED-pumping of Cr:LiSGAF, Cr:LiSAF, alexandrite and Ti:sapphire. These early results open the way to LED-pumped laser systems. Several systems are implemented such as laser oscillators in pulsed operation (Q-switch and cavity dump) followed by frequency conversions and laser pulses amplifiers

Full textThis PhD addresses the development of high-power laser diodes emitting at 975nm withhigh efficiency and wavelength stabilized using a Bragg grating. This thesis was conducted in the framework of a close partnership between IMS Laboratory, the GIE III-V lab, who is themain French founder of III-V semiconductor devices for electronic and photonic applications, and THALES Research & Technology in Palaiseau. An in-depth characterization and analysiswork has addressed thermal aspects that contribute, in particular, to limit the optical outputpower of a laser diode. In such a context, we have carried out a set of complementary characterizations both at III-V lab and IMS allowing us to provide some corrective solutionsfor technological optimization concerning the etching depth of the grooves that defines the emitting stripe of the laser diode and the nature of the submount acting as a thermocompensator. These solutions have been proposed from optical modelling implemented with a dedicated simulator, property of III-V lab, and thermal and thermomechanical (multiphysics approach) finite element simulations of the overall microassembled structure. All this work has resulted in the fabrication as well as electro-optical and thermal characterizations of three vertical structures namely LOC (Large Optical Cavity), SLOC (Super Large Optical Cavity)and AOC (Asymmetrical Optical Cavity). The LOC and SLOC vertical structures have been processed with a Fabry-Perot cavity and also including a Bragg grating (DFB architecture) while the AOC one was only fabricated with a Fabry-Perot cavity. State-of-the-art results aredemonstrated since in particular an optical power of 8W with an efficiency of 60% has been obtained that can be compared to those recently published by the Ferdinand-Braun Institute. The originality of the work carried out in this PhD has allowed us to receive a grant from the European Laserlab Cluster (The Integrated Initiative of the European Laser Research Infrastructures), to conduct dedicated experiments at the Max-Born Institute (Berlin) in thegroup of Dr. J.W. Tomm. The work aimed to characterize mechanical strain of the laser diode induced by the soldering process. Two vertical structures (SLOC and AOC) were investigated using complementary techniques (microphotoluminescence, time-resolved photoluminescence, photocurrent spectroscopy and pulsed L-I measurements), allowing to quantify the level of residual stress provided by the laser diode mounting process as well as the kinetics of the catastrophic degradation process (COD)

Full textLn this thesis, we study from the experimental and theoretical point of view, the clock signal characteristics delivered by a single-laser optically pumped cesium beam resonator. Our new resonator CSIII has been designed in order to avoid drawbacks due to Hanle effect which had arisen with our previous resonator CSII. Several parts have been significantly improved in order to get full benefit from optical pumping advantages. Ln the first part we examine some interesting aspects of the operation of cesium beam resonator i-e : - Determination of Hanle effect free experimental conditions; - Very low C-field resonance; - Experimental study of velocity distribution in the atomic beam; - Observance of extra resonances on the Rabi pedestal. Ln the second part, we determine owing to rate equation the theoretical signal to noise ratio assuming that no extra noise is brought by the laser. We take into account the effect of optical collecting efficiency. These theoretical predictions are compared with experiments on our resonator CSIll. Ln the last part we have measured the short term stability. Ln conclusion, this study clearly shows that optical pumping allows an improvement of cesium atomic clock performances using a single conventional laser diode configuration. Optical pumping is performed this way in our resonator and reaches its theoretical limitations for usual atomic fluxes

Full textThe goal of this Ph.D. work is to study and understand CaF2:Yb ceramics sintering behaviour in order to produce transparent ceramics, comprising a rather limited residual porosity and optical quality compatible with a laser amplification purpose. First, the characteristics which make of ytterbium doped calcium fluoride an interesting material for high average power laser amplifiers will be reminded. Then, the method used for raw CaF2:Yb nanopowders production will be explained, and the nanopowders characteristics and potential deficiencies toward a ceramics process will be exposed. Three distinct shaping ways are explored for green body forming, two of them involving wet shaping conditions which are quite a new feature for a fluoride material-based laser ceramic such as CaF2:Yb : Isostatic pressing of dried nanopowders, slip casting, and an innovative wet shaping way using centrifuge forces and not involving porous moulds or charged slurries use. The sintering behaviour of each production ways green bodies are studied. Finally, the optical and laser properties are observed for each of the synthesis methods and compared to ideals single crystals with similar composition

This work was done in collaboration with two companies: Bertin Technologies and SDAE.In the first part, we present the development of a new compact laser source, made for Bertin Technologies as part of sorting of plastics waste by LIBS. This analysis technique and the specific context of the project will be detailed in the first part of this chapter. Then, the different steps of research and development which have resulted in this innovative, compact and high performance new laser are described in detail. The second part is devoted to the development of lasers for industrial marking accomplished in partnership with SDAE. More precisely, the general principles and techniques of laser marking are described as well as the specific constraints of this project. LIBS and laser marking tests will be done with these lasers

Full textIn this paper, we study from the experimental and theoretical point of view, the clock signal characteristics given by a laser diode optically pumped cesium beam resonator. In the first part, we determine owing to rates equations the best pumping and detection configuration which maximize the clock signal amplitude. In the second part, these theoretical predictions are compared with experiments. We particularly deal with one laser set-up, which is very simple to operate. Its delivers a clock signal with an excellent signal to noise ratio, very promising in atomic clock operation. We finally analyze, in the last part, more sophisticated configurations using several laser sources. They should notably increase the signal to noise ratio, if one reduces the frequency noise of laser diodes used in the experiments. Ln conclusion, this study clearly shows that optical pumping allows an improvement of cesium atomic clock performances

Full textThis thesis has been realized in III-VLab in collaboration with the South Electronic Institute in Montpellier. The aim of this work focuses in one hand, on the performance improvement of DFB's diode lasers emitting at 780 nm, and the advanced design of a compact semiconductor laser diode (Master Oscillator Power Amplifier), integrating monolithically the master oscillator (DFB for Distributed Feedback laser); in the other hand, using the noise phenomenon’s studies as a tool, for validating of our laser technologies. The Developments round the 780 nm wavelength, have been divided into different thematic: Fabry-Perot and DFB, Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers (SOA), MOPA, and the lasers noise’s study. We have studied structures with different quantum well thickness (160Å, 135 Å and 145 Å). The comparison of global performances of broad area lasers from these different structures, far to being obvious, allowed us to choose the one that integrates the 160-Å-thickness of quantum-well, for the realization of ridge Fabry-Perot lasers of 3 to 4-µm-of width. We obtained with broad area lasers, as cleaved, with 3-mm cavity lengths, an output power around 5 watts per facet, in continuous bias current around 10 AModellings and electro-optics characterizations performed on ridge Fabry-Perot lasers, allowed to refine DFB lasers at 780 nm, in comparison of the existing building blocks in the lab; we proposed new optimized structures with Large and Super Large Optical Cavities(LOC and SLOC), in terms of optical output power, beam and spectral qualities. The noise measurements with electrical noise modelling, allowed us to extract a value of Hooge’s parameter of 2,1.10^-3, quite in agreement with literature for such lasers, which corresponds to a good material quality and laser technology.Different types of flared SOA have been designed, realized and characterized. The characterizations of various SOA geometries, have given in general, values of gain between 19 dB to 25 dB. With SOAs of types: fully Index Guiding (IG), fully Gain Guiding (GG) and Mixed Guiding (MG), we have respectively obtained 500 mW, 750 mW and 1 W. All the results obtained with these structures are promising for monolithic integration with DFB. Regarding the MOPA, three approaches have been studied. The straight MOPA, the approach of SOA and DFB with 7° tilt(relative to the normal to cleaved facets), and the most complex, but promising approach, integrating the SOA with 7° tilt, and straight DFB, with a bend section between them. By taking into account all the results obtained on Fabry-Perot lasers, DFB, and SOA results, we were able to propose original MOPA designs. The layout drawing has been realized, all the MOPA configurations and additional, DFB and SOA devices, have been included on it. They will be used as test structures for characterizations

Full textElectroluminescent diodes are popular sources due to their low cost, their reliability, and their excellent luminous efficiency. However, the power density of lambertian sources such as LED cannot be improved with linear optics which makes them not suited to laser pumping. We propose to increase the LED power density by one order of magnitude by coupling them in luminescent concentrators (LC). We studied these luminescent concentrators as illuminating sources using LC made of cerium doped YAG crystals (Ce:YAG) and we analyzed their performances using ray tracing simulations. For a deeper understanding of the challenge of extracting trapped rays in luminescent concentrators, a fully analytical model is also presented and used to study the influence of simple geometrical modifications such as wedging or roughening the luminescent concentrators output face. A significant increase of the light intensity was experimentally observed as well as a shrinking of the angular distribution. Finally, we set up a full organic structure with a LED source associated to thin film luminescent concentrators in order to pump micrometer-sized multimode waveguides. We demonstrated a one-order of magnitude amplification compared to a direct pumping with the same power density. It makes the LED/concentrator light source well suited for integrated optics and opens new perspectives whenever

Full textCompact diode-pumped solid-state lasers (DPSSL) arecontinuously replacing traditional gas lasers as well asenabling completely new technology. However, compact and costefficient designs are required to satisfy end-user demands. Theaim of this thesis was therefore to investigate novel laserdesigns for given applications considering these demands. In alarge part of the thesis work, nonlinear optics were employedto realize laser wavelengths where there was no appropriatelaser transition available.
Besides other nonlinear crystals such as BBO, LBO and KTP,periodically poled KTP played an important role in this thesiswork. Its unique properties regarding up conversion processeswere exploited, thus supplying a broadened view over itspotential and limitations.
This thesis places emphasis on practical concerns, mainlyrelated to real applications. It gives solutions to the beamshaping of laser diodes, covers the simulation and the designof laser dynamics as well as laser performance and describesthe sources of laser output degradation and damage mechanisms.Novel infrared lasers were designed and multiple intra-cavity,external cavity and non-resonant multi-pass frequencyconversion schemes were successfully employed and optimized. These produced red, orange, green, blue and ultraviolet outputfor various applications like spectroscopy, micro machining andwriting of fiber Bragg gratings.
