Abstract:
This chapter analyzes the Brazilian inflation and stabilization experiences during a period spanning three decades, from 1960 to 1990. It focuses on five stabilization plans. The first is the PAEG Plan, a neo-orthodox stabilization plan, which did not eliminate inflation but reduced its trend rate. The PAEG Stabilization Plan started as a fully orthodox plan, but later, as the social cost imposed by the inertial component of inflation became apparent, an indexation mechanism was devised with a forward component in wages readjustment, decreasing the backward component. This mechanism, which intended to preserve the average real worker’s wage, became a standard tool of stabilization plans in Brazil, despite the criticism it received at that time. The other four are heterodox plans, Cruzado, Bresser, Summer, and Collor, implemented during the so-called lost decade.

Abstract:
♦ Any knee with major disruption of two ligaments is likely to have been dislocated at the time of injury♦ Knee dislocations are associated with high risk of neurovascular injury. Angiography or vascular ultrasound is mandatory♦ In knee dislocations, following immediate reduction and stabilization usually with a brace, acute repair of the ruptured soft tissue structure within 2–3 weeks of injury is likely to provide superior results compared to later reconstruction♦ Management of most multiligament injuries is complex and requires surgical intervention therefore specialist centres are best to be involved early♦ In cases with associated malalignment, osteotomy can improve the results of ligament reconstruction.

Abstract:
There has been great interest in the overlap between ADHD and substance use disorder (SUD). ADHD is a common neurobehavioural disorder of childhood that places the individual at elevated risk for later SUD. Studies have shown that 25–40% of adults and adolescents with SUD have ADHD. Although the exact link between the two disorders is still unclear, it appears their connection is complex, and involves the interplay between various biological, behavioural, and genetic factors. Early pharmacotherapy of ADHD does not increase SUD, and, in fact, appears to reduce cigarette smoking and SUD. In individuals with ADHD and SUD, stabilization of SUD is recommended initially, with consideration of adjunct non-stimulant and extended release stimulant medications. More research on the mechanisms of overlap between the disorders, preventative effects of early ADHD treatment on SUD, and concurrent treatments for ADHD and SUD are necessary.

Abstract:
This chapter analyzes the origins and development of the Brazilian banking system from colonial times to the present day. It begins with a description of the first credit relationships before the existence of banks in colonial Brazil, followed by a discussion of the difficulties faced by the first banks established in the imperial period. It then presents a detailed discussion of domestic and foreign banks during the First Republican, and the key institutional changes that occurred during the Great Depression of the 1930s and the military regime after 1964. Later, it covers banking activities in the hyperinflation period up to the country’s stabilization in 1994. The chapter concludes with an analysis of the recent period and how the banking system endured the Great Recession of 2008–2010 and the recent Brazilian fiscal crisis that began in 2014.

Abstract:
This chapter drills down into IMF/advanced economy government interactions and Fund efforts to influence the international economic policy debate during the Great Recession. It situates Fund thinking within the wider politics of austerity, charting how the Fund’s post-crash views on fiscal policy efficacy and economic stabilization were increasingly at odds with other key European players. The IMF mobilized its knowledge bank and scientific reputation to correct what key Fund figures saw as mistaken premises of austerity policies. Notably, the IMF counselled against precipitate exit from stimulus, debunked the notion that fiscal consolidation is in itself ‘growth friendly’, underlined that fiscal consolidation can be self-defeating, and, as the recession drew on, advised further counter-cyclical fiscal policy interventions to support the recovery. The Fund’s empirically backed policy advice advocated a ‘less now, more later’ approach to consolidation by countries with fiscal space.

Abstract:
Starting with a review of vector fields and their integral curves, the book presents the basic equations of the subject: Euler and Navier–Stokes. Some solutions are studied next: ideal flows using conformal transformations, viscous flows such as Couette and Stokes flow around a sphere, shocks in the Burgers equation. Prandtl’s boundary layer theory and the Blasius solution are presented. Rayleigh–Taylor instability is studied in analogy with the inverted pendulum, with a digression on Kapitza’s stabilization. The possibility of transients in a linearly stable system with a non-normal operator is studied using an example by Trefethen et al. The integrable models (KdV, Hasimoto’s vortex soliton) and their hamiltonian formalism are studied. Delving into deeper mathematics, geodesics on Lie groups are studied: first using the Lie algebra and then using Milnor’s approach to the curvature of the Lie group. Arnold’s deep idea that Euler’s equations are the geodesic equations on the diffeomorphism group is then explained and its curvature calculated. The next three chapters are an introduction to numerical methods: spectral methods based on Chebychev functions for ODEs, their application by Orszag to solve the Orr–Sommerfeld equation, finite difference methods for elementary PDEs, the Magnus formula and its application to geometric integrators for ODEs. Two appendices give an introduction to dynamical systems: Arnold’s cat map, homoclinic points, Smale’s horse shoe, Hausdorff dimension of the invariant set, Aref ’s example of chaotic advection. The last appendix introduces renormalization: Ising model on a Cayley tree and Feigenbaum’s theory of period doubling.
