Quali rischi corre una società incapace di ascoltare i propri testimoni, che li lascia scomparire quasi distrattamente? Che cosa accadrà quando sarà partito anche l’ultimo testimone di un’epoca e degli eventi che l’hanno segnata? Sono alcuni dei quesiti che strutturano la riflessione di Andrea Bajani in Ogni promessa (2010), romanzo incentrato sul vuoto lasciato dalla scomparsa dei testimoni e sul percorso necessario per traghettare nel presente il loro lascito in maniera consapevole e produttiva. La scelta della postura adatta di fronte a tale perdita non è tuttavia scontata, e richiede un percorso di accettazione ed elaborazione del lutto: senza di esso non rimane altro che un fragile e sterile ripiego verso l’intimo, su cui è impossibile costruire un avvenire. Attraverso la storia di Pietro e di suo nonno reduce del corpo di spedizione italiano in Russia del 1943, Bajani tratteggia questo cammino in bilico tra pubblico e privato, al termine del quale ci si può riappropriare del presente proiettandosi verso un futuro nuovamente immaginabile.

Tra il 1860 e il 1960 si è consumato il più grande esodo che la storia moderna conosca con circa trenta milioni di italiani che hanno lasciato la nostra penisola. Le privazioni, la fame erano tante e tali da far prendere la triste decisione di partire e cercare di sostenere da lontano la propria famiglia. Straziante il distacco: intere famiglie si stavano per lasciare per sempre e certamente non si sarebbero mai più visti. Al porto di Napoli, ci si affacciava dalla nave per vedere ancora una volta, forse l’ultima, i volti amati. C’era chi urlava il nome di chi lasciava, chi prendeva in braccio i bambini e li mostrava, chi aveva portato con sé un gomitolo di lana e lo svolgeva tenendone un capo e lanciando l’altro capo giù sul molo al proprio caro in modo da rimanere in contatto sino a quando la nave non avrebbe salpato. L’urlo della sirena scatenava un mare di fazzoletti bianchi e i fili di lana rimanevano tesi nelle mani di ciascuno sino a quando il piroscafo non si allontanava dalla banchina. E poi il distacco: sono partiti tutti pe’ terre assaje luntane, ma quel filo di lana, lasciato penzoloni alla partenza, non si è però spezzato perchè molti di loro si sono sentiti poi più italiana di quelli rimasti in patria.

Abstract:

Questo commento sull'articolo di Cesare Romano (2022) costituisce una integrazione a questo testo che presenta in modo corretto, ma parziale, la relazione tra le vicende biografiche della vita di Alfred Adler e l'ideazione di costrutti psicologici che hanno concorso a dare struttura all'impianto teorico della Psicologia Individuale. Pur nella sua sinteticità, il commento integra quanto non pro-posto nell'articolo; ma è anche occasione per lasciar intravvedere la più significativa articolazione della teoria di Alfred Adler. Viene ripercorso, in poche righe, il topos che ha spesso accompagna-to l'interpretazione della Psicologia Individuale: di essere una teoria semplice, facilmente descrivi-bile con il ricorso ad alcuni concetti cardine. In realtà è una teoria che apre numerose prospettive per la comprensione della complessità del funzionamento mentale che, nel presente commento, è in parte descritta e in parte lasciata solo intendere.

Abstract:

Riassunto Il testo descrive gli aspetti salienti dell’attuale congiuntura mondiale. Attraverso una sintetica analisi del processo che ha portato al trionfo del liberismo globalizzato, si mostra come a cominciare dal 1990 la guerra alle migrazioni si inscriva in una vera e propria tanatopolitica (il lasciar morire). Infatti, i dominanti designano le migrazioni come il nemico del XXI° secolo perché temono che l’aumento della popolazione mondiale sia incontrollabile e che si sovrapponga ai cambiamenti climatici provocando - secondo loro - destabilizzanti invasioni di migranti nei paesi ricchi. In realtà temono che si imponga la necessità di una redistribuzione egualitaria della ricchezza mondiale che potrebbe permettere la sopravvivenza decente anche di oltre 10 miliardi di umani a condizione anche di eliminare tutte le fonti di distruzione del pianeta e innanzitutto l’estrattivismo di carbone, petroli, gas, uranio e terre rare.

Abstract:

Se analizan tecno-tipológicamente las industrias líticas, mayoritariamente elaborada sobre cuarcitas, del yacimiento paleolítico al aire libre de Tarazona III (2.479 piezas líticas), formando parte de la Secuencia Paleolítica del Guadalquivir, que abarca el final del Pleistoceno Medio e inicios del Pleistoceno Superior (129 ka y <104 ka). Se identifican las cadenas operativas del yacimiento, desde la selección de materias primas hasta la fabricación de los útiles con percutor duro. Son cadenas dirigidas especialmente a la obtención de pequeñas lascas (<5 cm), lo que refuerza la selección del tamaño del canto rodado, con patrones de reducción de núcleos elementales, buena representación de los centrípetos y baja presencia del levallois. La serie de N3 es muy equilibrada y completa; y relativamente completas las de N1 y N2 lo que sugiere, o bien la preconfiguración de las cadenas operativa en otros lugares cercanos y el transporte de los productos de talla al yacimiento; o, en N1, el desplazamiento hidro-geomorfológico de las piezas de dimensiones más reducidas. La proporción útiles lasca/lasca es del 24% (N2) y 34,7% (N3), esto es, en los niveles posteriores a 104 ka BP. Esta proporción junto a la baja variabilidad de los tipos sobre lasca, la exigua o nula presencia de macroútiles, define la industria de Tarazona III, como uno de los yacimientos representativos del Paleolítico Medio Antiguo (PMA) del Valle del Guadalquivir.

L’odierno dibattito bioetico sulle questioni del fine vita sembra ancora caratterizzato da alcuni nodi problematici in merito alla responsabilità morale. Per esempio, certi approcci di stampo utilitaristico conferiscono a un medico che pratica l’eutanasia la medesima responsabilità morale attribuibile a chi non avvia o sospende dei trattamenti di sostegno vitale. Chiamiamo questo come l’argomento della “sempre uguale responsabilità”. La prospettiva opposta alla precedente riguardo all’attribuzione di responsabilità ritiene invece che vi sia una differenza morale assoluta tra uccidere e lasciar morire. Si definisca tale tesi nei seguenti termini: “mai la medesima responsabilità”. Dopo aver sottolineato come l’argomento della “sempre uguale responsabilità” equipari erroneamente all’eutanasia il non avvio o la sospensione dei trattamenti, l’articolo evidenzia le implicazioni sull’attribuzione di responsabilità derivanti sia dal rifiuto sia dalla difesa incondizionata della distinzione uccidere/lasciar morire. Nello specifico, mentre la tesi della “sempre uguale responsabilità” conduce a un’iper-responsabilizzazione del medico, l’altro argomento (“mai la medesima responsabilità”) ottiene l’effetto opposto, cioè de-responsabilizza l’agente morale. Richiamando altre distinzioni morali, il paper suggerisce quindi un approccio intermedio che distingue da un lato la causa dalle condizioni, dall’altro i doveri negativi da quelli positivi. Infine, attraverso la distinzione tra lasciar morire colpevole e lasciar morire per il bene del paziente, si rileva come in alcuni casi il lasciar morire sia moralmente equiparabile all’uccidere. Di conseguenza, affrontare le questioni del fine vita per attribuire la responsabilità significa confrontarsi con la complessità dell’agire morale, ma, per evitare approcci riduttivi, è necessario mantenere tutte le distinzioni appena menzionate. ---------- Nowadays the bioethical debate on end-of-life issues seems to still be characterized by some problematic interpretations of moral responsibility. For example, within certain utilitarian approaches, the same moral responsibility is ascribed to a physician who practices euthanasia and to another who withholds or withdraws life-sustaining treatments. Let’s call this point of view “the always equal argument”. An opposite approach to the ascription of responsibility emerges from the thesis that there is an absolute moral distinction between killing and letting die. Let’s call this thesis “the never equal argument”. After showing that the always equal argument erroneously describes the act of withholding or withdrawing treatments such as euthanasia, the paper addresses the implications that both a rejection and an unconditional defense of the killing/letting distinction could have in the ascription of responsibility. To specify, it is argued that while the always equal argument calls for an over-responsibility of the physician, the never equal argument leads the agent to take less responsibility for his actions. By referring to other moral distinctions, the paper then suggests an intermediate position that addresses the relevance of the distinctions between cause and conditions and between negative and positive duties. Finally, by the distinction between morally culpable letting die and letting die for the patient’s good, it is argued that in some cases letting die is morally equivalent to killing. Ascribing responsibility at the end of life thus means struggling with the complexity of moral acting, but maintaining all these distinctions is necessary to avoid reductive approaches.

Abstract:

Locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the anus (LASCCA) has a poor prognosis with a high risk of treatment failure calling for intensified therapy. We present the long-term follow-up of a nationwide cohort of LASCCA treated with intensified induction chemotherapy (ICT). The study included patients with LASCCA (T3-4N0 or T1-4N+) treated with at least one cycle of ICT (cisplatin, ifosfamide, leucoverin, and 5-flourouracil) between 1998–2018. Data were retrospectively collected from medical records, and statistics were performed in STATA 16.1. In total, 166 patients with LASCCA were identified. Following ICT, 157 patients (95%) received primary curative treatment with either radiotherapy (70%), chemoradiotherapy (27%), or abdominal perineal resection (3%). The overall local tumor response rate after ICT was 76% with 20 (13%) achieving complete local tumor response. After the primary treatment, 123 patients (79%) obtained complete response, and 27 underwent salvage surgery due to persistent disease. The median follow-up time was 6 years, local and distant failure rates 22% and 13%, respectively. The 3- and 5-year disease-free survival rates were 70% and 67%, and the 3- and 5-year overall survival rates were 76% and 70%, respectively. Intensified ICT regimen could be a supplementary treatment option in the most advanced cases of LASCCA. Prospective randomized trials are needed to investigate this approach further.

Abstract:

The "space" of Lascar strong types, on some sort and relative to a given complete theory T, is in general not a compact Hausdorff topological space. We have at least three (modest) aims in this paper. The first is to show that spaces of Lascar strong types, as well as other related spaces and objects such as the Lascar group Gal L(T) of T, have well-defined Borel cardinalities (in the sense of the theory of complexity of Borel equivalence relations). The second is to compute the Borel cardinalities of the known examples as well as of some new examples that we give. The third is to explore notions of definable map, embedding, and isomorphism, between these and related quotient objects. We also make some conjectures, the main one being roughly "smooth if and only if trivial". The possibility of a descriptive set-theoretic account of the complexity of spaces of Lascar strong types was touched on in the paper [E. Casanovas, D. Lascar, A. Pillay and M. Ziegler, Galois groups of first order theories, J. Math. Logic1 (2001) 305–319], where the first example of a "non-G-compact theory" was given. The motivation for writing this paper is partly the discovery of new examples via definable groups, in [A. Conversano and A. Pillay, Connected components of definable groups and o-minimality I, Adv. Math.231 (2012) 605–623; Connected components of definable groups and o-minimality II, to appear in Ann. Pure Appl. Logic] and the generalizations in [J. Gismatullin and K. Madeira de Eucalyptus urophylla e três resíduos do processamento mecânico da madeira de Eucalyptus spp (lascas, cascas e maravalhas) foram carbonizados às temperaturas máximas de 400 oC e de 600 oC visando à determinação dos rendimentos gravimétricos em carvão e em carbono, além dos teores de gases condensáveis, gases não-condensáveis, materiais voláteis, cinza e carbono fixo. As lascas, quando submetidas à pirólise à temperatura máxima de 600oC, resultaram nas melhores propriedades energéticas, em comparação aos outros resíduos do processamento mecânico da madeira de Eucalyptus spp e lenho de Eucalyptus urophylla.

AbstractIn 1802, several “country ships” arrived in London from Bengal, their lascar crews having suffered severe casualties due to fatigue, exposure, and starvation. Aboard the Union, the officers’ treatment of the crew was so bad that the lascars and a sympathetic English sailor alerted the East India Company. Their testimony, recorded by the Company's Committee of Shipping, provides new insights into lascar living and working conditions – in particular the problem of undermanning ships – reminding us how the management–labour dynamic aboard a ship at sea always favoured owners and officers rather than workers.

Abstract:

As the most common cancer in men, prostate cancer is molecularly heterogeneous. Contributing to this heterogeneity are the poorly understood metabolic adaptations of the two main types of prostate cancer, i.e., adenocarcinoma and small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (SCNC), the latter being more aggressive and lethal. Using transcriptomics, untargeted metabolomics and lipidomics profiling on LASCPC-01 (prostate SCNC) and LNCAP (prostate adenocarcinoma) cell lines, we found significant differences in the cellular phenotypes of the two cell lines. Gene set enrichment analysis on the transcriptomics data showed 62 gene sets were upregulated in LASCPC-01, while 112 gene sets were upregulated in LNCAP. ChemRICH analysis on metabolomics and lipidomics data revealed a total of 25 metabolite clusters were significantly different. LASCPC-01 exhibited a higher glycolytic activity and lower levels of triglycerides, while the LNCAP cell line showed increases in one-carbon metabolism as an exit route of glycolytic intermediates and a decrease in carnitine, a mitochondrial lipid transporter. Our findings pinpoint differences in prostate neuroendocrine carcinoma versus prostate adenocarcinoma that could lead to new therapeutic targets in each type.

Sono possibili due rappresentazioni alternative di struttura in costituenti, una in cui il dimostrativo esso forma sintagma con la preposizione, l’altra in cui forma sintagma con il nome. Le due rappresentazioni potrebbero esplicitare fasi diverse del processo di grammaticalizzazione del dimostrativo nelle costruzioni in esame. Tale processo tuttavia non si lascia facilmente descrivere in maniera unitaria. Decisivo sembra, in ogni caso, l’esame della complessa evoluzione del dimostrativo latino IPSE.

The practice of monitoring active volcanoes, includes several techniques using either direct or remote measurements, the latter being more important for volcanoes with limited accessibility. We present the Volcanic Anomalies Monitoring System (VOLCANOMS), a new, online, low-cost and semiautomatic system based on Landsat imagery. This system can detect permanent and/or temporal thermal anomalies in near-infrared (NIR), short-wave infrared (SWIR), and thermal infrared (TIR) bands. VOLCANOMS allows researchers to calculate several thermal parameters, such as thermal radiance, effective temperature, anomaly area, radiative, gas, convective, and total heat, and mass fluxes. We study the eruptive activity of five volcanoes including Krakatau, Stromboli, Fuego, Villarrica and Lascar volcanoes, comparing field and eruptive data with thermal radiance. In the case of Villarrica and Lascar volcanoes, we also compare the thermal radiance and eruptive activity with seismic data. The thermal radiance shows a concordance with the eruptive activity in all cases, whereas a correlation is observed between thermal and seismic data both, in Villarrica and Lascar volcanoes, especially in the case of long-period seismicity. VOLCANOMS is a new and powerful tool that, combined with other techniques, generates robust information for volcanic monitoring.

El objetivo de este artículo es analizar las representaciones sociales de los y las estudiantes universitarios en torno al hostigamiento sexual de los docentes masculinos a través de miradas lascivas. Se realizaron cuatro grupos focales con estudiantes de las licenciaturas en Derecho y Psicología de la Escuela Superior de Actopan de la Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Hidalgo. La muestra poblacional es de 28 mujeres y 20 hombres. La metodología de grupos focales no permite obtener en detalle la información de cada participante. Los estudiantes de ambos sexos manifiestan indignación y rechazo por este tipo de hostigamiento sexual; sin embargo, no lo expresan en términos de derechos humanos. Los resultados de esta investigación pueden aportar elementos para la elaboración del protocolo contra la violencia de género en la universidad. Las evidencias muestran que es indispensable desarrollar una vinculación más precisa entre la definición legal de miradas lascivas y los términos que al respecto utilizan los protocolos universitarios.

Abstract. Small steam-driven volcanic explosions are common at volcanoes worldwide but are rarely documented or monitored; therefore, these events still put residents and tourists at risk every year. Steam-driven explosions also occur frequently (once every 2–5 years on average) at Lascar volcano, Chile, where they are often spontaneous and lack any identifiable precursor activity. Here, for the first time at Lascar, we describe the processes culminating in such a sudden volcanic explosion that occurred on 30 October 2015, which was thoroughly monitored by cameras, a seismic network, and gas and temperature sensors. Prior to the eruption, we retrospectively identified unrest manifesting as a gradual increase in the number of long-period (LP) seismic events in 2014, indicating an enhanced level of activity at the volcano. Additionally, sulfur dioxide (SO2) flux and thermal anomalies were detected before the eruption. Then, our weather station reported a precipitation event, followed by an increase in steaming and a sudden volcanic explosion at Lascar. The multidisciplinary data exhibited short-term variations associated with the explosion, including (1) an abrupt eruption onset that was seismically identified in the 1–10 Hz frequency band, (2) the detection of a 1.7 km high white-gray eruption column in camera images, and (3) a pronounced spike in SO2 emission rates reaching 55 kg s−1 during the main pulse of the eruption as measured by a mini-differential optical absorption spectroscopy (DOAS) scanner. Continuous carbon dioxide (CO2) and temperature measurements conducted at a fumarole on the southern rim of the Lascar crater revealed a pronounced change in the trend of the relationship between the CO2 mixing ratio and the gas outlet temperature; we speculate that this change was associated with the prior precipitation event. An increased thermal anomaly inside the active crater as observed in Sentinel-2 images and drone overflights performed after the steam-driven explosion revealed the presence of a ∼50 m long fracture truncating the floor of the active crater, which coincides well with the location of the thermal anomaly. This study presents the chronology of events culminating in a steam-driven explosion but also demonstrates that phreatic explosions are difficult to predict, even if the volcano is thoroughly monitored; these findings emphasize why ascending to the summits of Lascar and similar volcanoes is hazardous, particularly after considerable precipitation.

As escavações no Sambaqui de Sereia do Mar caracterizam uma tentativa de reconhecer as estruturas arqueológicas internas deste tipo de sítio arqueológico na Barreira da Itapeva, litoral norte do Rio Grande do Sul. O método de escavação empregado ocorreu através de níveis artifciais com 5cm em uma área total de 18m2. O sítio é basicamente formado por valvas de Mesodesma mactroides (Deshayes, 1854). Não foram identifcadas evidências de estruturas de habitação nem sepultamentos. Os artefatos encontrados caracterizam-se por contas de colares e pingentes em ossos e conchas, bem como percutores, lâminas de machados semi-polidas, bigornas e placas polidas líticas. El análisis del material lítico arqueológico del complejo Ayacucho de la cueva de Pikimachay correspondiente al Pleistoceno Final, ha permitido la identificación tipológica definida como desechos de talla, conformada i.e. núcleos desbastados, lascas primarias y secundarias y fragmentos de lascas obtenidas muy probable por percusión dura y/o blanda. Este trabajo presenta los resultados de la aplicación de una ficha de registro métrico, efectuado bajo la metodología de “Cadena Operativa”, con el objetivo de poder identificar medidas promedio y posibles orden de secuencia de talla lítica. Sin embargo, aún sabiendo que contamos con una evidencia mínima cualitativa de material lítico arqueológico procedente del Complejo Ayacucho, el resultado del análisis preliminar ha permitido al menos asociarlas, con tres momentos de talla lítica.

AbstractWe give strengthened versions of the Herwig–Lascar and Hodkinson–Otto extension theorems for partial automorphisms of finite structures. Such strengthenings yield several combinatorial and group-theoretic consequences for homogeneous structures. For instance, we establish a coherent form of the extension property for partial automorphisms for certain Fraïssé classes. We deduce from these results that the isometry group of the rational Urysohn space, the automorphism group of the Fraïssé limit of any Fraïssé class that is the class of all ${\cal F}$-free structures (in the Herwig–Lascar sense), and the automorphism group of any free homogeneous structure over a finite relational language all contain a dense locally finite subgroup. We also show that any free homogeneous structure admits ample generics.

Abstract Background Three dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography (3D STE) is a novel technique combining 3D echocardiography and speckle tracking analysis. 3D STE software dedicated to the left atrium (LA) was recently available. Our study aimed to assess (1) atrial fibrillation (AF) related LA morpho-functional remodeling using 3D STE and (2) value of LA function parameters in identifying paroxysmal AF (PAF). Methods One hundred thirty-nine PAF, 109 persistent AF (Per-AF) and 59 non-AF subjects underwent 3D STE. LA phasic volumes and total LA emptying fraction (LAEF) were obtained and used to calculate passive (pLAEF) and active LA emptying fraction (aLAEF) based on atrial contraction. LA longitudinal and circumferential strain representing reservoir (LASr/LASrc), conduit (LAScd/LAScdc) and pump (LASct/LASctc) function were also assessed. Results 3D STE was found to have good reproducibility. Increase of LA volumes and decrease of parameters representing LA reservoir and pump function were independently associated with AF as well as AF burden. The correlations between LA emptying fraction and LA circumferential strain representing the same function were always stronger than those with LA longitudinal strain (p < 0.001). Minimal LA volume, LAEF, aLAEF, LASrc and LASctc can be used to accurately differentiate PAF from non-AF subjects (AUC > 0.8) with great sensitivity and specificity. Conclusions Assessing LA remodeling in AF using 3D STE was feasible. AF and AF burden were independently associated with LA enlargement and impairment of reservoir and pump function but not conduit function. LA function parameters can indicate underlying PAF and thus can guide AF screening strategy.

Se propone un modelo de procedimientos y productos líticos para tratar de explicar artefactos y desechos de obsidiana que se encuentran en horizontes sedentarios agrícolas en casi coda Mesoamérica. Por método de percusión se crearon nódulos de forma ligeramente hemisférica, partiendo un nódulo ovoide en dos hemisferios o quitándole una lasca plana de un extrema, para crear plataforma.1 El paso siguiente fue el desprendimiento también por percusión, de lascas grandes en la periferia del núcleo para regularizar su contorno e iniciar la formación de aristas que se extienden desde la plataforma hasta el extremo distal (la punta) del núcleo. Después de quitar la cornisa 2 o sobrante de la plataforma, se separaron por percusión navajas grandes; luego, se cambió el método de percusión por el de presión y se obtuvieron navajas prismáticas del núcleo preparado. Muchos núcleos fueron rejuvenecidos (o reavivados) antes de que se agotaran y se les desechara. Tanto las navajas grandes como las prismáticas fueron usadas sin otra modificación o sirvieron de base para manufacturar gran variedad de artefactos. Presento en detalle el material del taller, del cual se derivó el modelo, y también hago la comparación de este con otros materiales de piedra tallada, pertenecientes a otros periodos en El Salvador.
