Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: In recent years the Laplace inversion method has emerged as a viable alternative method for the numerical solution of PDEs. Effective methods for the numerical inversion are based on the approximation of the Bromwich integral. In this thesis, a numerical study is undertaken to compare the efficiency of the Laplace inversion method with more conventional time integrator methods. Particularly, we consider the method-of-lines based on MATLAB’s ODE15s and the Crank-Nicolson method. Our studies include an introductory chapter on the Laplace inversion method. Then we proceed with spectral methods for the space discretization where we introduce the interpolation polynomial and the concept of a differentiation matrix to approximate derivatives of a function. Next, formulas of the numerical differentiation formulas (NDFs) implemented in ODE15s, as well as the well-known second order Crank-Nicolson method, are derived. In the Laplace method, to compute the Bromwich integral, we use the trapezoidal rule over a hyperbolic contour. Enhancement to the computational efficiency of these methods include the LU as well as the Hessenberg decompositions. In order to compare the three methods, we consider two criteria: The number of linear system solves per unit of accuracy and the CPU time per unit of accuracy. The numerical results demonstrate that the new method, i.e., the Laplace inversion method, is accurate to an exponential order of convergence compared to the linear convergence rate of the ODE15s and the Crank-Nicolson methods. This exponential convergence leads to high accuracy with only a few linear system solves. Similarly, in terms of computational cost, the Laplace inversion method is more efficient than ODE15s and the Crank-Nicolson method as the results show. Finally, we apply with satisfactory results the inversion method to the axial dispersion model and the heat equation in two dimensions.

Full textOur recent interest for porous media with high opened porosity leads us to develop and use new tools based on Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) to characterize porous structures. NMR pulsed field gradients measurements of the restrained diffusion of confined fluids constitute an efficient method to probe the local geometry in a porous media. The evolution of the apparent diffusion coefficient (Dapp) yields average information on the surface / volume ratio of porosity and tortuosity of the network. Applying an Inverse Laplace Transform in the second dimension, experiments reveal a relationship between resonance frequencies and local geometry, confirmed by the exchange spectroscopy (EXSY). Another source of information (size and heterogeneity of the network) was given by the diffusive diffraction pattern, obtained on model samples (packed spheres embedded with water) and for the very first time on a reel porous polymer using B1 gradients

Full textThe identifiability conditions of the active parameters (Biot numbers and thermal diffusivity) of the heat pulse (flash) method are studied and the errors in their estimation are calculated. The same flash method allows to reach some thermophysical properties of a deposit that has been laid upon a known substrate and a new identification method, based on the experimental Laplace transforms of the thermal contrast, is developed. Non destructive evaluation of laminated-composite plates, that present internal delaminations, is then started : this thermal method is based on the study, in front or rear side, of the influence of an internal defect on heat diffusion in the plate, after a heat pulse excitation on its front side. A method of estimation of the thickness, depth and extent, of the delamination is then presented. It uses the notion of a locally normalized thermal contrast and is implemented on transient two-dimensional temperature fields that have been recorded using an infrared scanner (similar use of experimental Laplace transforms). A semi-analytical method of steady two-dimensional inverse heat conduction is then applied to the experimental estimation of the variation of the heat transfer coefficient with the angle, in transverse forced convection on a cylinder

Full textThis thesis can be viewed as the state-of-the-art of Diffusion Ordered NMR SpectroscopY (DOSY). More precisely we described various approaches to analyze the data so that the information obtained from the mixture analysis can be maximized. The limitations of the different methods and the perturbation arising from chemical exchange are also discussed. In the first part of the manuscript, we describe the numerical problems arising from NMR diffusion data processing and compare several methods available in the literature for avoiding such problems. In addition, pulse sequences and methodologies, will be discussed herein. Finally, we describe the perturbation induced by the chemical exchange on NMR diffusion experiments and how this perturbation can be used to extract precisely the exchange rate constant. With the help of these techniques, the hydration properties of the pyrimidine bases have been probed

Full textWe compare some of the classical results of the Laplacian on functions with some new phenomena in the case of differential forms. First of all, it is possible to obtain small or large eigenvalues on domains whose topology and volume are fixed. So the Faber-Krahn and Weinberger inequalities do not hold les 𝝆-forms. But it is possible to give a lower bound of the first (non zero) eigenvalue on convex sets, which only involves the diameter (cf Payne-Weinberger inequality, for functions). We also get interested in convex hypersurfaces in Rn. On the other hand, we extended to differential forms the famous construction of Cheeger’s « dumbbell balls » and showed the existence of small eigenvalues on domains diffeomorphic to balls and of any diameter. Morever only one eigenvalue of these domains is small. So the Payne-Pólya-Weinberger inequality does not hold for differential forms. As a consequence, we can prescribe any finite part (without multiplicity) of the spectrum on a domain of fixed topology. Using doubling technics, we also studied the prescription on a compact manifold

Full textThis thesis introduces and explores a new class of probability models for exchangeable clustered binary data. In these models, the conditional probability of success is characterized by a function of the marginal probability of success and a positive cluster-specific random effect. The marginal probabilities are modeled using the logit and complementary log-log link functions. The distribution of the random effect contains an association parameter that is estimated to give a measure of the strength of the within-cluster residual dependence that is not accounted for by the margins. We show that the random effect distributions can be related to exchangeable Archimedean copula models, thus giving new insights on such models. The copula approach offers many advantages. Indeed, the family of Archimedean copulas provides a large class of models for over-dispersion in a Bernoulli experiment. From a statistical perspective, the marginal likelihood function for the sample data has an explicit expression, the maximum likelihood methods are then easy to implement and computationally straightforward. Based on the proposed models, four applications are considered. First, we investigate the construction of profile likelihood confidence interval (PLCI) for the intra-cluster correlation coefficient (ICC). The second application is concerned with an heterogeneity in capture probabilities in a mark-recapture study for estimating the size of a closed population. The third contribution deals with the estimation in small areas, the fourth and final, independent of the other three, analyzes the socioeconomic characteristics of men who prefer to marry girls under 18 years old. In the first application, we consider a simple case, without covariates and construct maximum likelihood inference procedures for the intra-cluster correlation using several specifications of Archimedean copulas. The selection of a particular model is carried out using the Akaike information criterion (AIC). Profile likelihood confidence intervals for the ICC are constructed and their performance are assessed in a simulation experiment. The sensitivity of the inference to the specification of the copula family is also investigated through simulations. Numerical examples are presented. We compare our approach with that proposed under the Beta-binomial model and with the modified Wald interval method proposed by Zou and Donner (2004). One of the important findings of these studies is that the profile confidence interval obtained under our models presents nice properties, even when the number of clusters is small. Model selection is an important step: if the model is poorly specified, then this could lead to erroneous results. The second application, an extension of the first one to accommodate cluster level covariates, is concerned with an heterogeneity in capture probabilities in a capture-recapture study for estimating the size of a closed population. Unit level covariates are recorded on the units that are captured and copulas are used to model the residual heterogeneity that is not accounted for by covariates. Several models for the unobserved heterogeneity are available and the marginal capture probability is expressed using the Logit and the complementary Log-Log link functions. The parameters are estimated using a conditional likelihood constructed with the data obtained on the units caught at least once. The population size is estimated using a Horvitz-Thompson estimator constructed using the estimated probabilities that a unit is caught at least once. This generalizes the model of Huggins (1991) that does not account for a residual heterogeneity. The sensitivity of the inference to the specification of a model is also investigated through simulations. A numerical example is presented. The third application uses the models of the first two in order to estimate small area proportions. We apply Bayes techniques using a new class of probability models, to estimate small area proportions. The Bayesian inference under the proposed models consists in obtaining the posterior distribution of the random effect and its Laplace transform. This posterior Laplace transform is then used to find Bayes estimates of small area proportions. We develop a comparison between the Best Predictor (BP) and the Best Linear Unbiased Predictor (BLUP). The model parameters are estimated using the maximum likelihood (ML) method. Under the proposed model, the likelihood function and the best predictor (BP) of small area proportion have closed form expressions. Model parameters are replaced by their ML estimates in the BP to obtain the empirical best predictor (EBP). We use the Akaike information criterion (AIC) for selecting a particular model. We propose the jackknife method to estimate the mean square error of the empirical Bayes predictor. Empirical results obtained from simulated and real data are also presented. The fourth and last problem addressed in this thesis, independently of the others three, investigates socioeconomic characteristics of men who prefer to marry girls under 18 years. We consider the data from the 2006 DHS Niger and use a bivariate Archimedean copula to model the association between education level (discrete) of men and their pre-marital income (continuous). We present the likelihood function for a sample from this pair of mixed random variables, and derive an estimate of the dependence parameter using a semiparametric procedure where margins are estimated by their empirical equivalents. We use the jackknife method to estimate the standard error. We use a Wald-type procedure, to perform a parametric hypothesis test of equality between the association of the socio economic characteristics of men who marry underage girls and that of men who marry older women instead. These test results contribute to the validity of our theory that men who marry girls under 18 years old have a low level of education and income pre-marital, when compared to men who did not.

Full textIn this thesis, we investigate two numerical methods to price nancial options. We look at two types of options, namely European options and Asian options. The numerical methods we use are the nite di erence method and numerical inversion of the Laplace transform. We apply nite di erence methods to partial di erential equations with both uniform and non-uniform spatial grids. The Laplace inversion method we use is due to Talbot. It is based on the midpoint-type approximation of the Bromwich integral on a deformed contour. When applied to Asian options, we have the problem of computing the hypergeometric function of the rst kind. We propose a new method for numerically calculating the hypergeometric function. This method too is based on using Talbot contours. Throughout the thesis, we use the Black-Scholes equation as our benchmark problem.

Full textUnder time pressure, action monitoring is composed of at least two distinct mechanisms: a proactive one, and a reactive one, taking place before and after response execution onset. Using behavioral and electrophysiological analyses, we tried to better understand those two mechanisms. An Event-Related Potential evoked by the response and sensitive to its quality, appears to be the electrical signature of the reactive mechanism of a supervisory system. In a first study, we attempted to validate the idea that this system is based on the confidence level attributed to the procedure of the information processing stream leading to the ongoing response. The two following studies indicate that its competence applies to parameters other than the effector. Continuous parameters such as response force and response duration also seem to be monitored. Involved in event monitoring as well as in time monitoring, this system is, therefore, generic. The supervisory system also acts proactively: by inhibiting the primary motor cortex involved in the incorrect response, it seems to implement error prevention processes. We evidenced a direct relationship between error risk and inhibition strength. Our results fit with the idea that the supervisory system acts in two steps: a proactive supervision process would allow avoiding error commission and, in case of failure of this preventive process, a reactive supervision process would allow detecting errors and, sometimes, would allow correcting them before they are committed

Full textVarious functional spaces take place in Resurgence theory multiplicative spaces of formal series expansions that one would like to sum; convolutive spaces of analytic functions, the elements of which coming from the former ones by formal Borel transformations, multiplicative spaces of analytic functions deduced from the previous ones by Laplace transformations, thus giving the Borel-Laplace transforms whose asymptotics give back the formal objects one started with. This thesis is devoted to the construction of convolution algebras. Our aim is to provide an original and self-contained proof of the stability under convolution products of the space of endlessly continuable functions, in a way understandable by any young searcher in the field. The second part of the thesis concentrates on the convolution space of endlessly continuable functions with simple singularities. We show how the use of the alien derivations bring deep knowlege on the singular structure We end our work with some problems, still open according to us but of great importance in practice and for which we think that our methods could be applied as well
