Full textThis research develops within the linguistic community Tolpán in The Flower Mountain in Honduras. Its purpose is to describe the sociolinguistic situation by identifying signs of threat or danger to the Tol language, or conversely of vitality for the future of this language. For the last three years we have been involved in an investigation that through interviews and empirical observations has lead to the following results: Tol is a language that is still alive, the transmission mechanism is generational, representations of the speakers about their language are positive, Tol is regarded as a representative feature of their culture, which is organized around a strong living collective imagination. However, we have also identified some elements that do not sustained the perpetuation of this language: the invasion of its physical area by the Spanish language area, nonverbal behavior that paradoxically denies the discourse of tol speakers, and asymmetrical communication exchanges, among others. This picture evokes a situation of diglossia, where Tol language is Spanish- language dominated and the dominant language. We take responsibility to say that tol is seriously threatened despite some evidence in its favor in order to revitalize the language, some urgent measures could be taken: tol schooling, recognition to official status, and community integration of Tol as equal to other Honduran languages in the social, political, cultural and economic field as a whole. This study could have not been possible without the collaboration of the Tolpan mediators, the help of friends who in the area of their possibilities, and the love and passion they share for languages have lent a helping hand and to whom I gratefully thank

Full textContextualized schooling and in mother tongue is essential for the socioeconomic and cultural development of indigenous communities in Honduras. But the Intercultural Bilingual Education project currently implemented, already adopted by other countries and for other communities, is it really adapted for the specific needs of the indigenous children in Honduras? To answer this question, we have designed a research plan based on two indigenous communities: the Ch’orti’ and the Misquito communities. Our empirical and complex corpus consists of two filmed classes, pictures from a student’s notebook, interviews with members of both indigenous communities and official and pedagogical documents which guide the project’s implementation. Its analysis allows us to accentuate the cultural differences and those of the sociolinguistic situations of these communities and to show that these elements are partially taken in account when creating the schooling instruments. It also appears that language and culture contacts, treated precisely, could contribute to the revitalization, linguistic recuperation and to the indigenous identity construction. It could also open an effective intercultural dialogue for the future. Finally, we conclude by stating that if this Intercultural Bilingual Education project is not the origin of indigenous language revitalization and recuperation, it could nevertheless influence, under certain conditions, positively over them. Our research, of sociodidactic nature, reveals that the actions and initiatives undertaken by the stakeholders for the indigenous children’s education is not entirely adapted to their sociolinguistic, cultural and pedagogical needs. It leads to some perspectives for the implementation of contextualized pedagogical strategies and a better acknowledgement and valorization of the linguistic and cultural diversity of these communities

Abstract: The present study aims at reflecting upon the process of text production in indigenous language by Terena teachers from Miranda, Mato Grosso do Sul. Motivated by the lack of texts written in their heritage language necessary to produce teaching material to serve as support for the development of literacy practices in their schools, this group of teachers decide to collectively elaborate texts in Terena during workshops conducted during their teaching education courses. Having chosen the theme of the first narrative to be written, the Terena teachers surprisingly opted for writing such narrative first in Portuguese (¿O Tuiuiú e o Sapo¿) e then translating it into Terena. (¿Kóho Yoko Hovôvo¿). Discourses produced during the writing of both versions made up the main research corpus. Secondary data was composed by discourses produced about a school material (written in Terena) which focused HIV prevention and the of ¿Kóho Yoko Hovôvo¿ in a literacy event which occurred in the village of Cachoeirinha and that revolved around the Terena efforts over a land dispute issue. Data analysis was oriented by the fact that (a) every discoursive practice reveals identity construction practices (MAHER, 1996, 1998; HALL, 2001); (b) in bilingual contexts, languages are not kept completely apart by language users (MAHER, 2007a) and literacy practices in both languages are often in interaction (HORNBERGER,1989/2003). The results of the study demonstrated that (a) the bileteracy practices which emerged in the workshops are evidence of a Terena cultural procedure which is justified by the identity construction processes of this indigenous people along History ¿ learning the Other language has always been one of their political strategies (LADEIRA, 2001); (b) the writing of both versions of the story of the heron (tuiuiú) and the frog (sapo) revealed itself to be a quite conflicting process, in the sense that political and sociocultural issues (first writing it in Portuguese) had to be confronted with essentially linguistic issues (writing it in Terena) and (c) critical reflection (MAGALHÃES, 2007) made it possible for the Terena teachers to reevaluate their representations about the writing of texts in their traditional language. It is expected that the results of the research here presented will contribute to the planning of teacher education courses in Brasil

Full textThis research focuses on two contemporary indigenous authors and their poetic texts: Hugo Jamioy Juagibioyand Anastasia Candre Yamacuri. In their work, these authors evoke cultural practices and ritual expressions ofthe ethnic groups which they identify with. Bridges between the poetic texts and the cultural areas where theCamëntsá and the Múrui-Muina verbal art exist, will be proposed. In the first part, I will analyze conceptually, historically and critically, the academic debate about literary expressions with oral roots that have beenincluded in the field of Literary Studies. The second part is divided in two pieces, each one focusing on one ofthe authors. An analysis between literary hermeneutics and ethnography on the ritual contexts and culturalpractices that the authors mention in their texts will be used. In celebrating in the society at large their ownnative language and the symbolic expressions of their ethnic groups, Candre’s and Jamioy’s texts propose aunique poetics based on a complex translation exercise, and an alternative interpretation of the world
