Abstract:
Cette thèse propose une étude des différents procédés utilisés par les locuteurs du lama (langue Gur parlée au Togo) pour exprimer verbalement leurs émotions. Les données analysées proviennent d’un corpus de première main recueilli sur le terrain à Kantè (Togo). Il consiste en une trentaine d’heures d’enregistrement de conversations spontanées et naturelles recueillies sur des places publiques comme les marchés, les lieux d’activités ludiques, ou de manifestations culturelles, tantôt au moyen d’enregistrements impromptus, tantôt par des prises de notes. Il en ressort que l’émotion peut se manifester selon trois modes d’expression : la dénotation, la connotation et l’inférence. Ces modes mettent en lumière une diversité de ressources et de stratégies : vocabulaire du champ émotionnel, marqueurs lexicaux et syntaxiques chargés de connotations émotionnelles, métaphores rendant compte de la conceptualisation des émotions, construction de l’émotion par la schématisation discursive d’une situation ou par la mise en place de l’ethos et du pathos dans le discours, etc. L’examen de ces différents procédés montre qu’il n’existe pas un marquage propre au langage de l’émotion en lama. Il ressort également de cette étude que la manifestation de l’émotion n’est pas codifiée par des normes sociales. La comparaison du lama avec d’autres langues à travers de nombreux exemples fait apparaître des similitudes et des différences dans la façon dont les émotions sont exprimées, aussi bien au niveau linguistique que culturel. L’expression émotionnelle dans la langue lama participe ainsi à la fois de l’universalité et de la spécificité culturelle
This thesis proposes a study of various linguistic processes used by the speakers of Lama (a Gur language spoken in Togo) to express their emotions. The data analyzed here come from a first-hand corpus collected during fieldwork in Kantè (Togo). It consists of thirty hours of recorded spontaneous and natural discourse, collected in public places such as markets, places of leisure activities, or cultural events, sometimes through unplanned recordings, sometimes through note-taking. It is found that emotion can be expressed in three modes of expression : denotation, connotation and inference. These modes of expression highlight a diversity of resources and strategies : vocabulary related to emotions, lexical and syntactic markers charged with emotional connotations, metaphors accounting for the conceptualization of emotions, construction of emotion by discursive schematization of a situation or by the establishment of ethos and pathos in discourse, etc. Examination of these processes shows that there is no marking specific to the language of emotion in Lama. It also appears from this study that the manifestation of emotion is not codified by social norms. The comparison of Lama with other languages through numerous examples reveals similarities and differences in the way emotions are expressed, both linguistically and culturally. Emotional expression in Lama is thus at once universal and culture-specific

Abstract:
Langue de tradition orale, le konkomba n'a jamais fait l'objet d'une desrciption linguistique approfondie. La présente description s'appuie sur un corpus de données recueillies pendant nos nombreux séjours à Nawaré, canton dont nous décrivons le parler, sur l'ensemble de la chaîne linguistique konkomba, au centre-ouest du Togo et au nord-est du Ghana. La langue y est décrite sous trois aspects, qui constituent les grandes parties de la Thèse : la phonologie (nous y dégageons les phonèmes consonantiques et vocaliques, la structure syllabique, les différents tons et leurs fonctions) ; la première partie de la morphologie (nominale) part de la structure morphologique pour dégager les différentes classes nominales ; nous étudions aussi la composition. La morphologie verbale présente le verbe dans l'énoncé ; elle identifie les formes que peut prendre un verbe dans cette langue, avant de les classer d'après leur structure qui est corrélative de leur insertion dans des formes aspectuelles données. De là, un certain nombre de propriétés qui distinguent les deux catégories majeures. Nous nous intéressons aussi à la catégorie d'adjectif qui, en konkomba, participe du nom et du verbe. La dernière partie – la syntaxe – étudie la phrase, elle examine les fonctions syntaxiques aussi bien centrales que périphériques, sur la base de la valence verbale. Elle montre la nécessité, pour ce type de langue (langue Gur ou Voltaïque), d'analyser le système syntaxique dans son rapport avec la morphologie nominale. Nous examinons aussi un certain nombre de processus syntaxiques comme l'interrogation et la focalisation.

Le Mali est un véritable pays plurilingue. Diverses langues et cultures y cohabitent et sont en contact permanent. Les habitants y sont, en grande partie, multilingues et choisissent une langue selon la situation de communication.Notre thèse est une initiative de documentation et de revitalisation du mamara, une langue parlée au Sud-Est du Mali, dans les régions de Koutiala, Ségou et Sikasso. Elle se présente comme un travail interdisciplinaire au sein des Sciences du Langage, à cheval entre la didactique des langues et cultures, anthropologie et sociolinguistique, appliquées à la revitalisation d’une langue « menacée » de la sous-famille gur, de la branche voltaïque et du groupe sénoufo au sein de l’ensemble Niger-Congo, parlée au Mali.Cette thèse se situe, quoique de manière parallèle, dans la continuité du projet ELAN- Afrique sur l’enseignement bi-plurilingue en Afrique. Mieux, elle propose une alternative par la méthode des TERPLO aux diverses méthodes déjà pratiquées et dont les limites sont connues. Dans cette thèse, nous faisons l’apologie d’une pédagogie favorable au transfert et reposant sur une démarche contrastive qui permet une analyse inter-systémique de la langue (L1) et de la langue (L2). Cette pédagogie co-participative est une proposition didactique qui a déjà montré ses preuves ailleurs dans l’amélioration des pratiques d’enseignement bi-plurilingue, du contenu des manuels et des programmes de formation s’inscrivant dans la logique de la démarche du projet ELAN, mais qui s’avère différente dans l’implémentation, comme nous le verrons et qui reste, du moins pour notre terrain africain, encore à teneur expérimentale, étant donné la situation d’insécurité qui règne dans notre pays.Notre thèse tente d’associer une praxis exogène, issue de la recherche-action en Amérique latine (http://axe7.labex-efl.org/taxonomy/term/12) en milieu autochtone (amérindien), à une pratique endogène africaine, allant dans le sens d’une pédagogie fondée sur un syncrétisme entre tradition et modernité, dans l’esprit du penseur et pédagogue malien Amadou Hampâté Bâ (1900-1991). Elle concentre son action sur la langue mamara, l’une des treize langues officielles du Mali depuis le « Décret n°2023-0401/PT-RM du 22 juillet 2023 portant promulgation de la nouvelle constitution »
Mali is a truly multilingual country. Various languages and cultures coexist and are in constant contact. The inhabitants are, for the most part, multilingual and choose a language according to the communication situation.Our thesis is an initiative to document and revitalize Mamara, a language spoken in southeastern Mali, in the regions of Koutiala, Segou and Sikasso. It is an interdisciplinary work within the Language Sciences. It straddles the didactics of languages and cultures, anthropology and sociolinguistics, applied to the revitalization of an "endangered" language of the Gur subfamily, the Voltaic branch and the Senufo group within the Niger-Congo ensemble in Mali.This thesis is a continuation of the ELAN-Africa project on bi-plurilingual education in Africa. Better still, it offers an alternative (TERPLO) to the various methods already practiced and whose limits are known. In this thesis, we advocate a pedagogy favorable to transfer and based on a contrastive approach that allows an inter-systemic analysis of language (L1) and language (L2). This co-participatory pedagogy is a didactic proposal that has already shown its evidence elsewhere in the improvement of bi-plurilingual teaching practices, the content of textbooks and training programs in line with the logic of the ELAN project's approach, but different in implementation.Our thesis attempts to associate an exogenous praxis, resulting from action research in Latin America cf. (http://axe7.labex-efl.org/taxonomy/term/12), with an endogenous African practice, pedagogy based on a syncretism between tradition and modernity, in the spirit of the Malian pedagogue Amadou Hampâté Bâ (1900-1991). It focuses its action on the Mamara language, one of the thirteen official languages of Mali since "Decree No. 2023-0401/PT-RM of 22 July 2023 promulgating the new constitution"

Considere comme le plus important des deux dialectes du bassar. Le n'cam dont l'aire linguistique s'etend au-dela des frontieres togolaises (et situee dans le nord-ouest du togo en ce qui concerne ce travail), est utilise par environ 40000 locuteurs. La description morphosyntaxique de cette langue a un double objectif : syntaxique et morphologique. Le choix de l'auteur de se servir de deux principaux types de morphemes (du sujet et du predicat) permet d'organiser la structure de la phrase en deux parties essentielles. Ainsi, les structures d'enonces definis par ce type de mecanisme permettent de comprendre comment les elements constitutifs de la phrase se combinent entre eux et quelles regles regissent leurs relations. Dans cette perspective, il apparait que les arrangements syntaxiques sont classes selon que les elements qui s'y trouvent sont semantiquement et syntaxiquement obligatoires ou non. Cette demarche fait suite a l'etude morphologique des constituants de la phrase. Considered as the most important of the two dialects which constitute the bassar language and whose linguistic area goes beyond the togolese frontiers (and which is situated in the north-west of togo as far as this work is concerned) is spoken by about 40000 people. The morpho-syntax description of this language has a double subject : syntactical and morphological. The choice done by the author to use two main types of morphemes (each used to focalise separately the subject and the predicate) allows him to organize the n'cam sentence structure into two main parts. Thus, the sentence structures defined by this kind of mechanism indicate clearly how all the sentence constituents are combined together and which kind of grammatical rules are involved in these relations. It appears, from this point of view, that n'cam sentences are classified due to the syntactic functions of the main terms entering in the constitution of these sentences the first choice gives place to the morphological system of consti tuents which reveals the internal combinatory properties involved in word-formation

Abstract:
This paper investigates the structural properties of morphosyntactically marked focus constructions, focussing on the often neglected non-focal sentence part in African tone languages.
Based on new empirical evidence from five Gur and Kwa languages, we claim that these focus expressions have to be analysed as biclausal constructions even though they do not represent clefts containing restrictive relative clauses.
First, we relativize the partly overgeneralized assumptions about structural correspondences between the out-of-focus part and relative clauses, and second, we show that our data do in fact support the hypothesis of a clause coordinating pattern as present in clause sequences in narration.
It is argued that we deal with a non-accidental, systematic feature and that grammaticalization may conceal such basic narrative structures.

I was a sophomore from a small village when Pira Sudham, the author of Monsoon Country and People of Esarn, came to speak at my university about poverty and the forgotten beauty of his people, my people, the poor people of Esarn, the Northeastern region of Thailand. Listening to his sad yet courageous stories, I was reminded over again that I, too, had stories to tell, though it would be some years before I finally sat down to puzzle them out. The result is a memoir of my childhood years in rural Surin, where the mother tongue is Khmer, where most are poor farmers and their rice fields are both their work place and their children's playgrounds. While writing this memoir I couldn't help but wonder why I had so often recalled my childhood years as among the dearest times of my life, despite all the rural hardship. There must be magic in being a child. There must be wonder in grandma's tales, the hunting of wild fruit, the swims in the pond and those walks in the woods. My village was my world, and it has much to teach largely because its being complex, difficult and painful and yet somehow simple and, above all, beautiful.

Abstract:
Ce travail porte sur deux mots particulièrement liés aux pensées religieuses anciennes : le mot « daimôn » dans la Grèce avant Platon et le mot « gui » dans la Chine pré-Qin. Comme le « daimôn » qui devient le « démon » maléfique, le « gui » aujourd’hui péjoratif ne l’est pas nécessairement dans la langue ancienne, mais ces deux termes sont intéressants notamment en raison de leur polyvalence et leur ambiguïté. Pour montrer tous les aspects importants du mot « daimôn » et du mot « gui » ainsi que les points de connexion entre ces deux mots à facettes, nous avons essayé de tracer le parcours de ces deux mots à travers les sources anciennes. Ces analyses montrent d’une part la vitalité et la créativité des traditions anciennes qui ont exercé de fortes influences sur l’emploi du mot « daimôn » et d’autre part, la création complexe et probablement relativement tardive de la tradition « gui-esprit/mânes ». Par l’intermédiaire de ces deux mots, la comparaison entre la Grèce et la Chine ancienne en ce qui concerne les traditions religieuses nous mène également à des réflexions sur la relation entre les langues et les traditions. La continuité des langues transforme les créations en traditions et elle apporte aussi la créativité aux traditions déjà créées
This work concerns two words particularly connected to ancient religions: the word daimôn in the Greece before Plato and the word gui in pre-Qin China. The same as daimôn which becomes to be the malefic démon, gui usually pejorative today did not contain necessarily negative connotations in old Chinese, but these two terms are interesting especially because of their versatility and their ambiguity. To show all the important aspects of the word daimôn and the word gui as well as the connection points between these two words multifaceted, we tried to analyze these two words in ancient works. These analyses show on one hand the vitality and the creativity of old traditions which exercised strong influences on the uses of the word daimôn and on the other hand, the complexity of the « gui-spirit/manes » tradition probably created relatively lately. Owing to these two words, the comparison between Greek and Chinese religious traditions also leads us to think about the relationship between languages and traditions. Languages’ continuity transforms creations into traditions and it also brings the creativity to traditions already created

Abstract:
The graphical user interface (GUI) could have a major impact on the successof an application. Like any other software component, the GUI is designedbefore being developed. The software design process usually starts with anabstract design that is illustrated via a modeling language and narrows downto more specific details during the process. However, there are not anymodeling languages that are explicitly focusing on designing the blueprint ofthe GUI. Developing a modeling language that is specialized in designing theskeleton of the graphical user interface could offer the software designers,architectures and clients the means of obtaining a better communication andunderstanding. Thus, developing a better product. In this report, thedevelopment of such a modeling language was made. The modeling languagecan illustrate the blueprint of the GUI. The development process was madeafter researching and finding the most suitable development procedures forour modeling language.

Abstract:
The main purpose of this dissertation is to answer the question of how one can understand the fact that we mean very different things when we say that God exists and when we say that chairs, mountains and trees exist, and that it is still a matter of existence. On the one hand it seems that we talk about the same thing when we say that something exists, irrespective of what it is, on the other hand it seems to be a question of very different things depending on what it is we are talking about as existing. This dissertation seeks to give an understanding of the relation between the concept of truth and the concept of reality. The conclusion is not only that we presuppose these concepts in everything we do, say, believe and think, but that we presuppose a specific understanding of these concepts, namely a concept of objective truth and a concept of an external and mind independent reality. In this dissertation it is also argued that our use of these concepts and that we use them in everything we do – that they are as basic as they are – says something about how it is, about reality. The use of these concepts does not only say something of what we conceptually presuppose but it also says something about what we assume in relation to reality. The conceptual aspect, in this way, has consequences ontologi.

Abstract:

Vi har valt att göra en undersökning om huruvida språkarbete och skrivträning ger några effekter för elevers skrivutveckling. Till grund för studien ligger en tidigare gjord undersökning av Ulla Ekvall. Materialet utgörs av texter från två elevgrupper på mellanstadiet. Data har insamlats i huvudsak med hjälp av en kvantitativ metod. En av elevgrupperna fick under en viss period grammatikundervisning och skrivträning medan den andra gruppen inte fick det. Båda grupperna har tilldelats en skrivuppgift vid två olika tillfällen. Vår hypotes inför försöket var att grupperna efter avslutat försök kommer att visa på skillnader i sitt skrivande. Resultat går i linje med hypotesen eftersom en större förbättring kan urskiljas i testgruppen som tagit del av ovan nämnd undervisning.

Abstract:
Web documents such as news articles, social feeds, and blogs provide an abundant and readily available data source of spatial information relating to dynamic events such as wildfires, storms, and chemical spills. Research in the fields of geographic information retrieval and natural language processing use methods to extract place-names from web documents that can be used to geocode these events. However much of the spatial information in these articles are difficult to use because of the inherent vagueness of natural language. This thesis aims to develop methods to handle the vaguness of representing natural language descriptions of events by integrating precise spatial information (landmarks and geographic coordinates) with imprecise spatial information to provide a map-based visualization of the likely spatial extent and location of web document events.

Abstract:
The purpose of this essay is to examine how Christians can and should speak about God if they take feminist criticism seriously. This purpose concerns two problems: the first starts with the proposition that God is essentially different from humans and things and at the fact that the language that we use to describe and speak about God is a human language. God is infinite, incorporeal, and timeless, while the human language normally is used to apply to finite, corporeal, and temporal things. How – if ever – can this language apply to God? To examine this problem further, I present four different theories of religious language. The second problem is actualized by feminists who criticize the standard within the Christian tradition to characterize God in predominantly masculine terms. Feminists have criticised religious language for being oppressive in several ways, and particularly to establish and maintain hierarchical structures in which women are subordinated men. In this essay I present and discuss feminist criticism of religious language and then distinguish four different strategies for feminists. I further examine three of these strategies, represented by Sallie McFague, Gail Ramshaw and Janet Soskice, dealing with the problem of religious language within the Christian tradition. In all three of these feminist strategies metaphors are found to be of great importance. Finally, I promote Soskice metaphor theory combined with an apophatic theory of language. Soskice stresses the importance of anthropomorphous metaphors and offer the possibility of using both male and female images when speaking about God. This strategy positively handles the proposition of God as essentially different but makes it possible for believers to refer to God (through metaphors). This is also the preferable strategy in line with feminist criticism.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the methods used by the Ministerium für Staatssicherheit (MfS), more commonly known as the Stasi, or East German secret police, for extraction of information from citizens of the German Democratic Republic for the purpose of espionage and covert operations inside East Germany, as it pertains to the deliberate brainwashing of East German citizens. As one of the most efficient intelligence agencies to ever exist, the Stasi’s main purpose was to monitor the population, gather intelligence, and collect or turn informants. They used brainwashing techniques to control the people of the GDR, keeping the populace paralyzed with fear and paranoia. By surrounding themselves with a network of informants they prevented actions against the dictatorial communist regime. Using the video testimonies of former prisoners, and former confidential informants who worked closely with and collaborated with Stasi agents, in combination with periodicals and previous historical studies, this work argues that the East German Police State’s brainwashing techniques had long and lasting consequences both for German citizens, and for the psychiatric health of former GDR citizens. The scope and breadth of the techniques and data compiled for use by the Stasi were exhaustive, and the repercussions of their use are still being felt and discovered twenty five years after the fall of the Berlin Wall. This study aims to show the lasting effects brainwashing had on former informants and the Stasi’s victims.

Il presente lavoro di tesi è il risultato dell’adesione al progetto “Language Toolkit”, promosso dalla Camera di Commercio della Romagna e dal Dipartimento di Interpretazione e Traduzione (DIT) di Forlì con lo scopo di garantire un maggiore grado di internazionalizzazione alle imprese romagnole nonché un primo approccio al mondo del lavoro agli studenti laureandi. Nello specifico, l’elaborato è stato redatto in seguito a un tirocinio di 300 ore svolto con l’azienda forlivese GMR Enlights, che ha riguardato la traduzione in tedesco di documentazione promozionale e tecnica (il company profile e la scheda tecnica di un proiettore). La tesi è composta da cinque capitoli che ripercorrono l’intero processo traduttivo. Il primo capitolo fornisce una descrizione generale del progetto, dell’internazionalizzazione delle PMI, dell’azienda GMR Enlights e della traduzione verso la lingua straniera. Nel secondo capitolo si procede a discutere l’importanza storica della traduzione tecnica, le teorie di traduzione più importanti in tale ambito, la comunicazione tecnica e le caratteristiche dei linguaggi specialistici. Nel terzo capitolo viene affrontato il concetto di “tipo testuale” e viene svolta un’analisi approfondita dei testi di partenza. Il quarto capitolo è dedicato alle risorse e alle tecnologie traduttive utilizzate prima e durante il processo di traduzione, ossia i corpora monolingui specialistici e comparabili per lo studio di testi paralleli e per l’estrazione terminologica; SDL MultiTerm per la creazione di un termbase; SDL Trados Studio per la traduzione assistita. Infine, nel quinto e ultimo capitolo vengono riportate le procedure ascrivibili alla macrostrategia generale di traduzione e le microstrategie adoperate per risolvere i problemi traduttivi ai vari livelli testuali.

Abstract:

Vårt syfte var att undersöka hur lärare och blivande lärare analyserar och bedömer en elevtext från skolår 2. Vidare ville vi undersöka vilken handledning och respons dessa ville ge eleven. Undersökningen grundade sig på 24 enkäter och 4 intervjuer som tog upp stavningsförmåga, användning av skiljetecken, meningsbyggnad, textens längd och sammanhang i texten. Dessa aspekter har berörts genom att lärarna och de blivande lärarna har fått göra iakttagelser och bedömningar av elevtexten. De har också fått redovisa vilken handledning och respons de vill ge till eleven. Resultaten visade på likheter och skillnader i sättet verksamma lärare och blivande lärare analyserar och bedömer en text. Vi drog slutsatsen att den största skillnaden var att de verksamma lärarna analyserar, bedömer, handleder och ger respons mer detaljerat än de blivande lärarna.

本研究探究了香港某所國際學校中漢語作為第二語言學習者的中文交際意願。研究對象主要是香港某英基國際學校的170名漢語學習者;主要採用定量的研究方法,通過研究者的課堂觀課和學生的“自我報告”(Self-report)來搜集數據,通過五個量表(背景變量量表、心理變量量表和課堂內外漢語交際意願量表)來實現研究;研究的內容包括學生們課堂內、外漢語交際意願的總體水平以及可能存在的差異,並總結前人研究發現,在新的研究背景下對一些可能存在影響關係的背景變量(年齡、性別、漢語水平、學習漢語的社會支持、母語、性格、對待學習漢語的態度)和心理變量(學習漢語時的焦慮、動機、自我覺察的交際能力)進行數據分析并驗證假設,通過SPSS19.0來付諸實現;最終就如何提高學生的課堂內、外漢語交際意願提出教學建議。 本次研究的主要研究發現有:(1)該國際學校漢語學習者的總體漢語交際意願水平偏低,介於“較低交際意願”和“中度交際意願”之間,而且課內漢語交際意願略高於課外漢語交際意願。(2)總體來看,男生和女生之間不存在漢語交際意願上的顯著差異,但在課內,女生比男生更容易不懂就問、更關注語言知識的細節;男生比女生更願意作為發言代表來公開表達自己觀點;在課外,男生比女生更願意在校園裡與陌生人說漢語,更願意和朋友們或者陌生人上網用漢語交流。(3)預科項目(DP)和中學項目(MYP)的學生群體間不存在漢語交際意願的顯著差異。但在課堂上,DP學生比MYP的學生更願意進行公開性的漢語表達,更願意深入探討相關問題,更願意進行一些總結概括能力較強的發言。(4)DP年級學生的漢語水平和交際意願呈顯著正相關,即漢語水平高越高,課內、課外和總體的漢語交際意願越高,漢語水平越低,課內、課外和總體的漢語交際意願越低。(5)在用漢語進行“主動性發言”上的意願,漢語水平高的群體明顯高於漢語水平低的群體,說明高水平漢語學習者更願意掌握交際的主動權。(6)學習漢語社會支持較多的群體表現出明顯更高的漢語交際意願,呈顯著正相關。(7)以廣東話作為母語的學生比以英語作為母語的學生具有更高的漢語交際意願,這種差異性在課堂外比課堂內體現得更為明顯。(8)性格較外向的學生比性格較內向的學生具有更高的課內漢語交際意願。(9)喜歡學漢語的學生比不喜歡學漢語的學生具有更高的課內、課外和總體漢語交際意願。(10)總體來看,學生學習漢語的動機和自我覺察的漢語交際能力都偏高,且兩者與課內、課外和總體漢語交際意願均呈十分顯著正相關,其中動機與課外方面相關性略大,而自我覺察的交際能力與課內方面相關性略大。學生的總體焦慮水平偏低,與課內、課外和總體交際意願均呈十分顯著負相關,與課內方面相關性略大課外方面。無論是課內還是課外漢語交際意願,“自我覺察的交際能力”對漢語交際意願來說是預測性最強的心理變量。 This research investigated Chinese as second language (CSL) learner’s willingness to communicate (WTC) both inside and outside classroom in one of international schools, Hong Kong. The research objects are 170 Chinese Language B learners from an English School Foundation (ESF) international school. The main methodology adopted here was quantitative method. Classroom observations by researcher and self-reports by students were firstly done to collect background data, and then five scales were employed to do the main investigation, including a WTC Inside–the-classroom Scales (WTCIS), a WTC Outside-the-classroom Scale (WTCOS), a Language Anxiety Scale (LAS), a Motivation Scale (MS) and a Self-perceived Communicative Competence Scale (SCCS). The research objectives were to explore the general situation of CSL learners’ WTC, and the specific characteristics as well as possible differences of their WTC inside and outside the classroom; then to further examine the possible affecting variables from both background and psychological perspectives including gender, age, Chinese language proficiency, mother tongue, social support, personality and attitudes towards learning Chinese, which were regarded as background variables, and language anxiety, motivation and self-perceived communicative competence, which were regarded as psychological variables. After that, data was processed and analyzed by SPSS 19.0 for hypothesis verification. Finally, pedagogical implications on how to improve CSL learners’ WTC both inside and outside classroom were generalized from the study.   The major findings showed that: (1) the general WTC of CSL learners from this school were slightly on the low side, between the Lower and Middle level, and the WTC inside the classroom was comparatively higher than outside of classroom. (2) On overall WTC, there was no significant difference between male and female students. But inside the classroom, girls were more likely to ask questions and pay more attention on language details than boys, while boy were more active to be the presenters and voice out in public. Outside the classroom, boys were more willing to communicate with strangers or chat online with friends in Chinese. (3) No significant WTC difference was found between Diploma Program (DP) and Middle Years Program (MYP), but DP CSL learners showed more willingness to make public speech, to be more of an inquirer in problems, and to do more generalization in speaking. (4) Among DP group, significant positive correlation was found between language proficiency and WTC, suggesting that the more proficient CSL learners showed higher WTC, and vice versa. (5) The more proficient group were more willing to speak Chinese voluntarily than the less proficient ones, implying that the more competent language learners are more likely to the take the initiative in communication. (6) CSL learners with more social supports to learn Chinese showed higher WTC, and a significant positive correlation was found here. (7) Students with Cantonese as mother tongue had higher WTC than their English as mothertougue counterparts, and this difference was more obviously outside of classroom. (8) Extroverted students showed significantly higher WTC inside of the classroom than the introverted. (9) Students who liked learning Chinese demonstrated higher WTC than those who didn’t. (10) Students’ motivation to learn Chinese and their SPCC were both on the high side, and both correlated positively on WTC, with motivation correlated more closely on outside WTC while SPCC more on inside WTC. Students showed slight lower anxiety level in speaking Chinese. Anxiety had significant negative correlation with WTC, and it mattered more inside than outside of classroom. No matter for WTC inside or outside, SPCC was the most predictive variable among the three.

Abstract:
Since the 75th anniversary of the 1928 Okeechobee Hurricane in 2003, a growing number of journalists and historians writing about the disaster have incorporated Zora Neale Hurston's 1937 novel Their Eyes Were Watching God as part of the official historical record of the hurricane. These writers often border on depicting Their Eyes as the authentic experience of black migrant workers impacted by the hurricane and subsequent flood. Within the novel itself, however, Hurston theorizes on the potential epistemic violence that occurs when a piece of evidence—a photograph, fallen body, or verbal artifact—is used to judge a person. Without a person's ability to use self-representation to give an "understandin'" (7) to go along with the evidence, snapshots or textual evidence threaten to violently separate people from their prior knowledge of themselves. By offering the historical context of photographs of African Americans in the Post-Reconstruction South, I argue that Janie experiences this epistemic violence as a young girl when seeing a photograph of herself initiates her into the racial hierarchy of the South. A few decades later, while on trial for shooting her husband Tea Cake, Janie again faces epistemic violence when the evidence of Tea Cake's body is used to judge her and her marriage; however, by giving an understandin' to go along with the evidence through self-representation, Janie is able to clarify that which other forms of evidence distort and is able to go free. Modern texts appropriating Their Eyes run the risk of enacting epistemic violence on the victims of the hurricane, the novel, and history itself when they present the novel as the complete or authentic perspective of the migrant workers in the hurricane. By properly situating the novel as a historical text that offers a particular narrative of the hurricane rather than the complete or authentic experience of the victims, modern writers can honor Hurston's literary achievement without robbing the actual victims of the hurricane of their voice.

Abstract:
In Sweden, the language of norm critique has gained increasing influence over the past ten years in connection with queer theoretical thinking and norm critical pedagogy becoming part of gender equality work and equality work in the (pre)school system. In this essay I examine, through interviews, how people who use norm-critical language view the normativity in the Swedish language with the main purpose of seeing if it works and how it is achieved. The essay also examines how norm-critical language users try to change the language to become more inclusive and how all this can be understood from the perspective of Butler’s performativity theory and ideas about power and normativity. The results of the survey show that norm-critical language works and contributes to the goal; a world where everyone gets a place and recognition in both language and physical space. We can see how children become subjects and are included in norm-critical language and how the binary perception of gender is set in motion, which leads to greater scope for action and inclusion. Furthermore, it is stated that there is a danger in the goal’s new normativity which leads to the conclusion that norm-critical language is and has to be a constant process and under constant reflection. As it is a small study and a large topic, I urge further research on norm-critical language.

Cette recherche a pour objet l’étude de l’enseignement-apprentissage des particules modales allemandes par un public non-germanophone de niveau débutant. Ce travail cherche en premier lieu à définir si l’introduction explicite et précoce de ces particules en classe d’allemand langue étrangère favorise leur production et leur compréhension. Deuxièmement, il tente de déterminer si la langue de scolarisation des apprenants influence le processus d’appropriation des particules modales allemandes. Le premier chapitre pose le cadre conceptuel du travail, en retraçant les principales notions mobilisées en linguistique et en didactique des langues : la linguistique contrastive, la linguistique de corpus, la théorie des actes de langage, les méthodes de l’enseignement-apprentissage des langues étrangères. Il présente également le corpus de l’allemand parlé recueilli à des fins didactiques auprès de jeunes germanophones. Le deuxième chapitre analyse les méthodes de présentation des particules modales dans les manuels et les grammaires de l’allemand langue étrangère ainsi que dans les dictionnaires et cahiers d’exercices consacrés à ce sujet. À la suite de cette analyse, nous proposons notre propre approche, basée sur deux supports innovants : des enregistrements didactisés de notre corpus et des tableaux bilingues qui expliquent en allemand, en français ou en russe le fonctionnement des particules modales. Le troisième chapitre expose la mise en œuvre de cette méthode lors d’une expérience didactique menée auprès d’apprenants franco-, russo- et sinophones. The research presented in this dissertation analyzes the acquisition of German modal particles by beginner-level learners. This project seeks firstly to ascertain if introducing the particles early and explicitly into the German-as-a-foreign-language can help learners to understand and use them more effectively. Secondly, it attempts to determine whether learners’ mother tongue influences the acquisition process of German modal particles. The first chapter sets the conceptual background, retracing the concepts in linguistics and language didactics that are fundamental to this study: Contrastive Linguistics, Corpus Linguistics, and Speech Acts Theory, as well as Foreign Language Teaching Methods and Approaches. It also presents the corpus of young peoples’ spoken German collected specifically for the didactic purposes of this dissertation. The second chapter analyzes the different methods of teaching modal particles put forward in textbooks and grammar books, as well as in dictionaries and exercise books devoted to the subject. Following this review, I propose my own approach based on two innovative teaching tools: recordings from my corpus of spoken German, and bilingual tables with comments in German, French or Russian on how German modal particles function. The third chapter describes the implementation of my method by presenting the results from an experiment of teaching German-as-a-foreign-language to French-, Russian- and Chinese-speaking learners. The thesis ends with methodological recommendations for teaching German modal particles
Die vorliegende Dissertation hat zum Ziel, den Erwerb der Modalpartikeln durch DaF-Lernende auf Anfängerniveau zu untersuchen. Allem voran wird der Frage nachgegangen, ob und wenn ja wie, eine explizite und frühe Behandlung der Modalpartikeln im DaF-Unterricht deren Produktion und Verständnis fördern kann. Anschließend wird der Versuch unternommen, einen möglichen positiven Einfluss der Muttersprache auf den Erwerb deutscher Modalpartikeln herauszufinden. Das erste Kapitel setzt den theoretischen Rahmen der Dissertation, indem es linguistische und sprachdidaktische Konzepte darlegt, die grundlegend für diese Arbeit sind: kontrastive Linguistik, Korpuslinguistik, Sprechakttheorie und Methoden des Fremdsprachenunterrichts. Es wird außerdem das Korpus “Gesprochenes Deutsch junger Muttersprachler“ beschrieben, das gezielt für die didaktischen Zwecke der Dissertation zusammengestellt worden ist. Im zweiten Kapitel werden Ansätze und Methoden zur Einführung der Modalpartikeln durchleuchtet, die in modernen DaF-Lehrwerken und Grammatiken sowie in thematischen Lexika und Übungsbüchern eingesetzt werden. Im Anschluss wird die eigene Herangehensweise dargestellt, die auf zwei innovativen Lehrmaterialien fußt: Didaktisierte Audioaufnahmen aus dem Korpus und zweisprachige Tabellen, die auf Deutsch, Französisch oder Russisch den Gebrauch der Modalpartikeln erläutern. Im dritten Kapitel wird die Umsetzung dieses Ansatzes beschrieben, der im Rahmen eines experimentellen DaF-Unterrichts mit russisch-, französisch- und chinesischsprachigen Deutschlernenden auf die Probe gestellt wurde. O objetivo do trabalho foi estudar a possibilidade de calibra??o do fot?metro solar multibanda (FSM-4), desenvolvido para esse trabalho, que opera nas bandas de 500 nm, 670 nm 870 nm e 940 nm. Investigou-se a estabilidade da profundidade ?ptica da atmosfera em um s?tio na cidade de Caic?/RN, situada regi?o semi?rida do nordeste do Brasil. O s?tio ? uma regi?o afastada de grandes centros e de atividades geradoras de polui??o atmosf?rica. Foram coletados dados de irradi?ncia solar direta em duas campanhas distintas durante o per?odo seco, sendo uma em Dezembro de 2012 e outra em Setembro de 2013, para fins de calibra??o do prot?tipo. Para a calibra??o foram utilizados os m?todos de Langley (ML) e m?todo modificado de Langley (MLM), fazendo-se uso das medidas coletadas. Para as bandas de 500 nm, 670 nm e 870 nm, utilizadas para a medida da profundidade ?ptica por aeross?is (AOD), foi utilizado o ML e para a banda de 940 nm, na qual ? medida a coluna de ?gua precipit?vel (PWC) ou vapor de ?gua na atmosfera, utilizou-se o MLM. Dentre os v?rios componentes constituintes da atmosfera, o vapor de ?gua e os aeross?is s?o os que apresentam a maior variabilidade temporal, devido a fen?menos naturais e antropog?nicos, e exercem um papel importante no balan?o de energia do planeta. O que justifica os esfor?os para o desenvolvimento de um equipamento de baixo custo. Assim, por meio do ML e MLM aplicado aos dados coletados, foram observadas variabilidades na AOD e PWC para as quatro bandas, nos dois per?odos estudados. Essa variabilidade da AOD e PWC no momento da coleta, que se d? por meio do espalhamento ou absor??o da radia??o solar na atmosfera, prejudicam o ajuste da reta aos dados e dificultando a obten??o da constante de calibra??o. Entretanto a regi?o ainda n?o pode ser totalmente descartada como s?tio de calibra??o, pois as campanhas foram de dura??o reduzida e as metodologias devem ser testadas em outros per?odos do ano. Como alternativa para a calibra??o do fot?metro solar, foi feito um estudo de curta dura??o, junto ao fot?metro da rede mundial AERONET (AERsol RObotic NETwork), instalado em Petrolina/PE, da ag?ncia espacial americana (NASA). Foram coletados dados durante tr?s dias com os instrumentos AERONET e FSM-4 operados simultaneamente no mesmo local. Por meio das t?cnicas de ML e MLM foram obtidos valores para teste das constantes de calibra??o. Foi observada uma converg?ncia dos valores, apesar da pouca quantidade de dados coletados. A metodologia mostrou-se uma alternativa vi?vel para a calibra??o do FSM-4.
Instrumentation is a tool of fundamental importance for research in several areas of human knowledge. Research projects are often unfeasible when data cannot be obtained due to lack of instruments, especially due to impor ting difficulties and the high costs there associated. Thus, in order to collaborate with the enhancement of a national technology, a multiband hand - held sun p hotometer (FSM - 4) was developed to operate in the 500 nm, 670 nm, 870 nm and 940 nm bands. In the 500 nm, 670 nm and 870 nm bands aerosols are monitored for evaluation of the AOD (Aerosol Optical Depth), and the PWC (Precipitable Water Column) is evaluated in the 940 nm band. For the development of the mech anical and electronic parts for the FSM - 4, th e materials and componen ts should combine low cost and quality of the data collected. The calibration process utilized the Langley method (ML) and Modified Langley Method (MLM). These methods are usually applied at high altitudes in order to provide atmosp heric optical stability. This condition however can be found in low height sites as shown in the research by Liu et al. (2010). Thus, for calibration of the FSM - 4, we investigated the atmospher ic optical stability utilizing the ML and MLM at a site in the cit y of Caic? / RN, located in the s emiarid region in northeastern Brazil. This site lies in a region far aw ay from large urban centers and activities generating anthropogenic atmospheric pollution. Data for calibration of the prototype were collected usin g the FSM - 4 in two separate operations during the dry season, one in December 2012 and another in September 2013. The methodologies showed optical atmospheric instability in the studied region through the dispersion of the values obtained for the calibrati on constant. This dispersion is affected by the variability of AOD and PWC during the appl ication of the above mentioned methods . As an alternative to the descr ibed sun photometer calibration , a short study was performed using the sun photometer worldwide network AERONET/NASA (AERsol RObotic NETwork ? US Space Agency), installed in Petrolina / PE in Brazil. Data were collected for three days utilizing the AERONET instruments and the FSM - 4, operating simultaneously on the same site. By way of the ML and MLM techniques, convergent test values were obtained for the calibration constants, despite the low amount of data collected. This calibration transfer methodology proved to be a viable alternative to the FSM - 4 calibration .

I denna studie analyseras funktionen av ordet hen i syfte att undersöka hur ordet används i dag. Hen fungerar som könsneutralt pronomen i svenskan men fyller även andra syntaktiska och könsöverskridande funktioner. Materialet har analyserats med en kvantitativ ansats och består av texter från dagspress där de olika förekomsterna av hen har kategoriserats efter funktion och texttyp. Uppsatsens avsnitt om teori behandlar språkplanering, feministisk språkplanering och hens uppkomst. Resultatet visar att hen främst fyller syntaktiska funktioner i dagspress, där 143 av 167 förekomster av ordet användes i funktioner som i den här studien kategoriserats som syntaktiska. Den vanligaste funktionen i materialet var hen i generisk referens. Ordet användes inom 15 olika texttyper inom dagspress, främst artiklar och krönikor, där hen i generisk referens var vanligast i artiklar och hen i maskerande funktion var vanligast i krönikor.
This study analyzes the function of the Swedish gender-neutral pronoun hen with the purpose of examining how the word is used today. Aside from being used as a gender-neutral pronoun, hen is also used in other syntactical functions as well as gender-transcending functions. The study material consists of texts from daily press that have been analyzed through a quantitative method. The various uses of hen have been categorized by function and text type. The theoretical part of the study introduces language planning, feminist language planning, and the origins of hen. The results of the study indicate that hen mainly fills a syntactical function in daily press, as 143 out of 167 uses of the word were in functions that can be categorized as syntactical. The most common function of hen found in the material was hen in generic reference. Hen was used in 15 different text types within daily press, most commonly in articles and columns. In articles, hen in generic reference was most common, while in columns most of the found hen were used in a concealing function.

近年來,香港有不少國際學校和直資學校開辦國際文憑課程(IB,International Baccalaureate),很多非華語學生選擇學習中文作為第二語言。然而,當中很多學生在使用詞彙上產生偏誤,而在二零零八年,香港教育局發布了《中國語文課程補充指引(非華語學生)》諮詢文件中,指出漢字的字形、聲調、語彙都是中文第二語言學習者的難點(香港課程發展議會,2008),這些難點均涉及語素。以往曾有不少研究,探討語素意識與詞彙知識習得的關係,因此,研究者期望以中文第二語言學習者作為研究對象,探討漢語語素意識與詞彙能力的關係。 本研究為量性研究,以語素意識與詞彙能力測驗和單元評估試卷來蒐集數據,並採用相關度測量研究方法分析數據,從而探討國際文憑課程中學項目學生在詞彙上的偏誤類型以及漢語語素意識與詞彙能力的關係,並提出建議以提升中文第二語言學習者的詞彙能力。本研究目的有三:(一)探究香港國際文憑課程中學項目學生在詞彙上的偏誤類型;(二)探究香港國際文憑課程中學項目學生的漢語語素意識與詞彙能力的關係;(三)歸納研究結果,並就教學和後續研究上提出具體建議,作為對外漢語教學之參考。 研究結果顯示,中文第二語言學習者的詞彙偏誤類型以「語音」為主,發展同音語素意識對於減少詞彙偏誤相當重要,此外亦需要加強發展部件規則的意識以及組字規則的概念,幫助他們掌握字形,對於減少詞彙偏誤亦有相當重要的作用。在漢語語素意識與詞彙能力的關係方面,中文第二語言學習者的語素意識對於詞彙能力有預測作用,同音語素意識對詞彙能力的預測作用大於同形語素意識的作用;而心理詞彙的語素意識、心理詞彙的數量及用詞能力三者有互相影響的關係,但仍需要進一步的研究。 International Baccalaureate (IB) Curriculum is adopted by more and more international schools and direct-subsidy schools in Hong Kong. At the same time, more and more non-Chinese speaking (NCS) students choose to study Chinese Language as a second language in IB curriculum. However, the vocabulary learning is one of the difficulties when they learn Chinese. The Education Bureau has published ‘Consultation Paper on Developing a “Supplementary Guide to the Chinese Language Curriculum for Non-Chinese Speaking Students” ’ and points out those NCS students encounter difficulties in learning Chinese graphemes, tones, vocabulary, etc. These difficulties are related to morpheme. Many researchers have conducted to study on relationship between morphological awareness and lexical knowledge. This dissertation aims to study on the relationship between morphological awareness and lexical ability of IB Middle Year Programme (MYP) students in Hong Kong. This is a quantitative research. Data collection includes two tests of the morphological awareness and lexical ability paper-pencil tests and one summative unit test of Chinese Language subject in a school. IB MYP students of two classes participated in this study and their morphological awareness and lexical ability were tested and analyzed by the statistical analysis software. The objectives of the study are: (1) Analysis on the types of lexicon errors of IB MYP students in Hong Kong; (2) Analysis on the relationship between morphological awareness and lexical ability of IB MYP students in Hong Kong; (3) Suggestions on developing of morphological awareness in learning Chinese Language as a second language. The results find that most of the lexicon errors were related to the tones and radical components of Chinese character, it is suggested to develop the homophone awareness and the orthographic awareness of Chinese character to reduce the lexicon errors. The morphological awareness of students has influence on student’s lexical ability. The homophone awareness has a closer relationship with lexical ability. The morphological awareness of the mental lexicon has an influence on the amount of mental lexicon and the ability of using lexicon. It is suggested to develop the morphological awareness of students in teaching Chinese as a second language to further study the relationship between the development of morphological awareness and mental lexicon in the future.

The Central Test and Evaluation Incentive Program, (CTEIP) is developing Integrated Network Enhanced Telemetry (iNET) to extend serial streaming telemetry (SST) with a command and control link. Command link interfaces link remote Advanced Range Telemetry (ARTM) transmitters (Tx) and receivers (Rx), developed under the ARTM CTEIP project, via graphical user interfaces (GUI). The communication channel links the iNET Tx on a vehicle network (vNET) and the iNET Rx on a ground station network (gNET) via a single GUI. The command link is an essential part of the pending iNET Technology Demonstration.

Abstract:
Sign language has largely been dismissed in gesture interface research on grounds of being a natural language. This essay argues that this has been premature. We begin with an overview of relevant literature in the fields of both gesture interface design and sign language, followed by a discussion of other graphical and text-based user interfaces in the context of language - effectively a short essay on language and metaphors in interface design, going into more detail why I believe dismissing sign languages based on their linguistic nature is a mistake. This is further explored in an example user interface that was designed by taking an insight from sign language as a starting point to replace the desktop metaphor and combining it with the discussed text-based interfaces to extend the WIMP paradigm. This experimental design was used as a way to pose questions to users about potential uses of gesture interfaces.
