The Dongxiang language, spoken in Southern Gansu province in the People’s Republic of China, is a Mongolic language that has been in contact with Linxianese, a neighboring Chinese dialect. These contacts have induced massive phonological and lexical changes in the Dongxiang language, but only a few syntactic changes due to the influence of Linxianese can be traced. In this paper, I describe and analyze two particular cases of the grammatical function expansion of two suffixes, -ni and -ji, used with adjectives in Dongxiang. From those examples, I try to show that there is a difference between two phenomena present in the Dongxiang language, one being closer to a calque and the other closer to grammaticalization, and eventually metatypy. I also describe a hypothetical borrowing process reflecting the grammatical integration of these two suffixes. La langue dongxiang, parlée dans le sud du Gansu en République Populaire de Chine, est une langue mongolique qui a été en contact avec le dialecte chinois voisin de Linxia. Celui-ci a influencé la langue dongxiang sur le plan phonologique et lexical de façon importante alors que la syntaxe ne semble pas avoir été autant influencée. Dans cet article, je décris et analyse deux suffixes, -ni et -ji, utilisés avec des adjectifs, dont les fonctions se sont étendues sous l’influence du linxianais. A partir de ces exemples, j’essaye de montrer qu’il existe deux phénomènes distincts, l’un se rapprochant du calque et l’autre de la grammaticalisation, et éventuellement de la métatypie. Je tente également de décrire le processus d’emprunt possible qui reflète l’intégration grammaticale des deux suffixes dans la langue dongxiang.

Résumé Il n’est pas possible de dater l’entrée du mot « Risikomanagment » (RM) dans les dictionnaires de la langue allemande. Probablement, il s’agit d’un calque de l’expression américaine risk management, expression qui peut se vanter d’une longue tradition (Knight 1921) dans le monde anglo-américain. Pour approfondir une telle recherche dans le domaine de la langue allemande, il faudrait de nombreux dictionnaires mono- et plurilingues ainsi qu’une exégèse de la littérature spécialisée et exhaustive en sciences économiques. En d’autres termes, ceci nécessiterait un projet de recherche avec l’établissement d’un important corpus de textes avec l’infrastructure adéquate. Un seul homme – en l’occurrence un professeur émérite – ne peut y parvenir seul.

Les langues menacées ont surtout été étudiées du point de vue de ce que l’on appelle les causalités externes. L’approche est donc généralement ethnolinguistique, sociolinguistique ou psycholinguistique. Relever les faits linguistiques qui pourraient être des indices de fragilisation, de déclin de ces langues permettra d’améliorer, d’affiner la grille des critères internes. Ceci dans la perspective d’une typologie. Dans cette optique le basque souletin, dialecte en danger, se caractérise par les traits suivants: absence de création lexicale, recours au français au détriment du terme équivalent basque, simplification de la syntaxe, calque syntaxique, perte dans l’expressivité, la modalisation. Au contraire l’emprunt lexical, l’existence de fluctuations et de flottements de phonèmes, l’évolution du système phonologique ne sont pas dans le cas précis des critères probants.

Résumé À propos d'une expérience de traduction: Désir sous les ormes d'Eugène O'Neill. À partir d'une expérience de traduction ponctuelle (Désir sous les ormes d'Eugène O'Neill mis en scène par Matthias Langhoff en 1992), la traductrice s'efforce de rendre compte des solutions qu'elle a trouvées pour transposer l'anglo-irlandais utilisé par O'Neill comme langue de poésie. Il lui a semblé possible de traduire la dualité de cet anglais marqué par les structures du gaélique en utilisant le français marqué par les structures du breton tel qu'on l'entend encore parler en Basse Bretagne. Cependant, le recours à un parler vécu (ayant donc sa cohérence) et à une situation d'élocution semblable (de partage impossible) ont eu pour avantage, non seulement de réaliser un calque mais d'autoriser une rupture avec la norme. C'est cette rupture, acceptée en vue d'un gain d'efficacité, qui a contraint la traduction à partir des éléments ayant précisément été effacés par les autres traductions françaises de la pièce: les récurrences, le système métaphorique, la ponctuation et la graphie du texte, en tant qu'éléments constitutifs, porteurs de sens. Cet exemple très limité amène ainsi à considérer les problèmes que pose la traduction d'un sociolecte comme révélateurs d'une résistance à l'acte de traduire, inhérente à cet acte même, parce qu'issue d'une résistance à l'autre, en ce qu'il a d'étranger.

Au moment de décrire les parties d’oraison du français, les grammairiens des XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles se tournent, comme leurs prédécesseurs, vers le latin, perçu comme un modèle d’excellence. Plus spécifiquement en ce qui concerne le nom, cette imitation les conduit à décréter que cette occurrence varie comme son homologue antique en genre, en nombre et en cas. La difficulté liée à l’absence de morphème casuel du substantif français, loin de constituer un frein, est contournée : en français la déclinaison du nom serait surtout celle de l’article, occurrence antéposée qui tout en précisant la référence opérée par l’élément nominal, varie au gré de la fonction grammaticale occupée par le groupe nominal. Ainsi, l’occurrence la femme (sujet ou complément d’objet) correspondrait au nominatif et à l’accusatif, tandis que l’occurrence à la femme (complément d’attribution) équivaudrait à un datif. Cette théorie, déjà en péril aux XVIe et XVIIe siècles, est très largement remise en cause au XVIIIe siècle. La controverse ne décourage pas Régnier-Desmarais (1706) et Vallart (1744), qui défendent la thèse d’une variation en cas et établissent des paradigmes de déclinaisons, longuement explicités et justifiés (première partie). Leurs argumentations étayées se heurtent aux exposés de Girard (1744) et de Du Marsais (1769), qui perçoivent le calque du latin comme un contresens syntaxique et une méconnaissance des caractéristiques de l’article, classe de mots en mal de statut (deuxième partie). Beauzée (1767) réconcilie les deux tendances en affirmant que si le nom ne possède pas de déclinaison, le français reste une langue casuelle en ce qui concerne le pronom. Rétablissant ainsi la légitimité du cas tout en le limitant à un type de mots précis, il s’interroge plus globalement sur le rôle de cette catégorie grammaticale (troisième partie).

À partir d’une population de 142 professeurs de français langue étrangère (FLE) du Mexique et d’un ensemble de tests (l’analyse factorielle exploratoire, le calcul des coefficients alfa de Cronbach et l’analyse de Rasch), les évidences de fiabilité, de cohérence interne, d’agroupement et même de dimensionnalité sont produites. De façon générale, l’ensemble des échelles développées et testées présentent des critères de normalité acceptables. Dans ses romans: Les soleils des Indépendances (1976), Monné, outrages et défis (1990), En attendant le vote des bêtes sauvages (1999) et Allah n'est pas obligé (2000), l'écrivain ivoirien dénonce les souffrances de l' Afrique noire. Il les dénonce avec les yeux des Africains et les décrit dans une langue calquée sur la leur. En effet, son style étonne, choque, séduit. Kourouma ne s'est pas contenté de «penser la langue»comme tout autre écrivain francophone; son oeuvre ne témoigne pas seulement d'une sorte d'hétérogénéité langagière comme c'est le cas en général chez les écrivains qui vivent le conflit des langues et des cultures; il est allé plus loin. Le but de notre étude est d’éclaircir comment les sujets inanimés contenus dans les textes écrits en anglais sont traduits en coréen. Dans les propositions anglaises, les agents inanimés se voient confiés le rôle d’assurer les actions provoquant un impact sur sur d’autres participants. Or, la langue coréenne tolèrent difficilement une telle utilisation des sujets inanimés, ce qui crée un problème épineux pour les traducteurs d’anglais en français. Notre analyse montre que dans 9 examples sur 10 selectionnés pour notre étude, les traducteurs ont modifié la transitivité du texte source, tantôt en les remplaçant par d’autres, tantôt en changeant le processus. Une seule traduction restante a su préserver la structure du texte de départ. L’article concut que si cette modification est inévitable d’un certain sens, à cause de la différence syntaxique des deux langues concernées, il risque d’affaiblir, un effet discursif du texte source. En revanche, les examples de transferts directs ou de calques semblent trahir le fait que la langue coréenne se montre plus tolérante vis à vis des agents inanimés que par le passé, au moins pour certaines formes de transitivité.

RÉSUMÉ Depuis 1975, on peut obtenir, pour le Québec, la distribution des décès selon la langue d’usage, et celle des naissances selon la langue maternelle et la langue d’usage de la mère. Il a ainsi été possible de construire des tables de mortalité abrégées, selon le sexe et la langue d’usage (francophones, anglophones, allophones). Les résultats obtenus révèlent des espérances de vie plus faibles chez les francophones que chez les autres groupes. Le calcul des taux de fécondité par âge a permis de montrer que les femmes francophones, naguère les plus fécondes, le sont devenues beaucoup moins que les femmes allophones, tout en l’étant encore un peu plus que les femmes anglophones.

The paper addresses the ways of applying economy principle to the sublanguage of psychology. The authors identify the most productive term formation methods, which show the tendency of both languages to compression of nominal words and phrases. In the system of psychological terms of the English language, the most productive ways of linguistic compression are affixation and compounding. The English terminological system is rich, functional and economical because of its unlimited potential for compounding and affixation. The Russian terminological system is more likely to enrich the vocabulary through phonetic borrowings, semantic derivation and calque. It is argued that the borrowings acquired by the Russian terminological system account for the multitude of synonymous terms. On the other hand, phonetic borrowings and semantic calque have enriched the vocabulary without effort and redundancy. It is concluded that economy principle plays a fundamental role in the creation of new words and their adaptation to the English and Russian terminological systems.

Résumé L’analyse des textes scientifiques dans une perspective discursive fait apparaître que, bien que leur contenu porte sur des sujets universels, leur forme est liée à la culture de la langue dans laquelle ils ont été produits. En effet, ils ont pour but de modifier l’univers cognitif du lecteur, ce qui implique la mise en oeuvre de mécanismes spécifiques souvent associés à des formes linguistiques déterminées. A partir d’un corpus de textes de semi-vulgarisation scientifique en anglais, en français et en espagnol, cet article se propose de montrer que, dans certains cas, les contraintes liées à la progression textuelle obligent le traducteur à calquer des formes de mise en texte de l’original, même si elles sont peu usuelles dans la langue d’arrivée.

Cet article propose une révision de l’hypothèse de Mantarō Hashimoto sur l’altaïcisation du chinois du Nord avec des données diachroniques sur les contacts qui ont été intenses dans la capitale (Pékin) du xiie siècle au xxe siècle. La langue vernaculaire des Yuan (1279-1368), dynastie mongole, est d’abord particulièrement étudiée, et on cherche à expliquer pourquoi les structures syntaxiques altaïques qu’elle révèle ont ensuite disparu sous les Ming (1368-1644). On analyse ensuite principalement le phénomène de code-switching entre le mandchou et le chinois sous la dynastie mandchoue des Qing (1644-1911). Les emprunts et calques syntaxiques qui sont entrés dans le système du pékinois moderne sont rares. Ce dernier, en revanche, a été beaucoup plus influencé par le mandarin de Nankin lorsque les deux systèmes ont convergé pour former ce qu’on appelle aujourd’hui le mandarin standard ou langue nationale.

Abstract The study of pseudo-English words arising as translations of Spanish lexemes and expressions has been largely overlooked, if not deliberately ignored, by scholars working in the field of Anglicisms. There are several reasons for this, but the most important is surely that the type of translation involved in the coinage of these words goes right against the grain of what is deemed conventional, common-or-garden calquing. A lexical or phrasal unit coined as a calque of a Spanish word or phrase may look English, but is actually Spanish. On occasion, a Spanish word or word element may also be jocularly interpreted as if it were English, thus lending itself to playful calquing into Spanish. Drawing on a corpus of over 2,000 citations from the microblogging site Twitter, this article provides a detailed analysis of the processes used to create Spanish-based false Anglicisms, usually for playful or humorous effect. The bottom line of this analysis is that these calqued formations are generally motivated by a desire to undermine the sophistication and prestige associated with the use of English loanwords in Spanish.

Nous proposons une typologie des noms propres sur deux niveaux puis passons en revue les différents procédés que recouvre la translation : l’emprunt – c’est-à-dire la non-traduction –, le calque, la transposition, l’adaptation, la modulation, l’incrémentialisation, mais aussi, lorsque les deux langues envisagées s’écrivent avec des alphabets différents, la translittération et la transcription. Enfin, nous nous penchons sur certains aspects morphologiques des noms propres en rapport avec la traduction automatisée.

RESUME Cet article traite d'un problème langagier commun à ceux des autochtones du Canada qui parlent toujours leur langue et conserve encore leur culture. Ceux-ci ressentent actuellement deux urgences: d'une part, de pouvoir gagner leur vie à un niveau comparable au standing des populations allochtones, et d'autre part, de pouvoir travailler chez eux au sein de leur propre culture et dans leur propre habitat. L'auteur observe, en outre, ce qui tend à arriver à l'autochtone qui essaie de s'assimiler au mode de vie allochtone, afin de partager un niveau de vie plus élévé. On observe que la langue autochtone, bien que parlée et écrite, n'a jamais été aménagée, unifiée, ou normalisé au Canada comme elle l'a été au Groenland ou au Paraguay, où la langue autochtone est officielle. On examine les caractéristiques d'un dialecte autochtone, d'une branche de la langue inuktitut, la langue des inuit. Par la suite, l'auteur propose quelques applications de la traductique à la résolution des problèmes économiques et sociaux. Les solutions proposées sont: la création d'une interface entre les dialectes de la langue autochtones par truchement de la traduction automatisée vers plusieurs dialectes à la fois (la "pluriductique"); et l'emploi, à cette fin, d'un métalangage normalisé provenant du calcule de la forme moyenne des dialectes. Aussi proposée, est la création d'une interface entre la langue autochtone et la langue allochtone (l'anglais ou le français). L'interface qui fait le pont entre langues autochtones et allochtones, permettra de se servir de l'ordinateur comme station de travail à distance (la télématique). Enfin, en passant, on traite de l'application de la traduction distribuée dans la modification stylistique pour objectifs pédagogiques, soit l'interface entre le style d'apprentissage de l'individu et la bibliothèque source du savoir. Résumé La souplesse d’adaptation et la puissance de calcul symbolique du micro-ordinateur permettent, d’une part, de créer une véritable interaction avec l’enfant et, d’autre part, de favoriser des activités amenant l’enfant à manipuler la langue et à réfléchir sur son fonctionnement. Ce sont ces deux caractéristiques du micro-ordinateur que nous avons essayé d’exploiter en réalisant des logiciels de français dont le but est d’amener l’enfant à une meilleure maîtrise de la langue écrite. For the function of theme-rheme mapping onto sentence structure, Catalan right-dislocation, a syntactically-based operation, is being replaced by in situ accent-shift, a prosodic strategy. This structural innovation found in the data analysed is probably triggered by a calque from English and Spanish, which uses a prosodic variant. The occurrences found in the corpus (oral television production from non-spontaneous, supervised genres) indicate that the phenomenon is occurring unnoticed by language advisors. By showing that a non-standard prosodic strategy alien to the Catalan inventory has increased over the two periods studied, it is proved that the (structural) calque is making progress. The frequency of the occurrence of this calque may pave the way for its acceptance as a valid Catalan resource among Catalan speakers, as the intimate link between prosody and syntax in Catalan is blurred.

Purpose. The aim of the article is to describe the system of means of expressing permission in the language of documents of the 18th century. On the basis of linguistic material extracted from collections of published documents, patterns of expression of permission and their dynamics during the 18th century are revealed.Results. In the time of Peter the Great, there was an activation of the means of expressing permission inherited from the previous era (constructions with the word volya, the predicative adverb vol'no and adjective volen), and at the same time new ways of expressing permission arose: the verbs dozvolyat'sya, pozvolyat'sya (polonisms), the phrase ne zapreshchat'sya. Later, new models remained in the Russian business language, and those inherited from the prePetrine business language mostly disappeared. Throughout the 18th century, there was a competition between the verbs dozvolyat'sya and pozvolyat'sya. In the Petrine era, the verb moch' also started to be used in documents, but its widespread use begins in the second half of the 18th century.Conclusion. In the era of the reign of Catherine II, a new period of enrichment of the means of expressing permission began. European (most likely German) calques imet' pravo, imet' vlast', vlasten appeared in the language, of which the calque imet' pravo turned out to be particularly productive. A variety of models for expressing permission had different sources of origin and presented the idea of permission in different ways.

Summary John Palsgrave, an Englishman, wrote the first detailed grammar of the French language, Lesclaircissement de la langue francoyse (1530). This work is remarkable not only for its length but also for its quality. Palsgrave wrote a pedagogical text for his English readers, using a system which leads the learner from the development of passive skills (interpretation, both oral andintellectual, of written texts) to the development of active skills (expressing oneself in the target language). At the same time, he responded to the French Humanist desire to bring the vernacular languages under the control of ‘rules certayne’. In its grammatical method, Lesclaircissement exemplifies a stage in the development of Humanist grammar, as the Renaissance grammarians moved from a method based on forms to a more abstract representation of linguistic facts. As such, Palsgrave’s work stands half-way between the early Renaissance calques upon Donatus and the later excursions into logical grammar. In phonetics, Palsgrave’s attention to detail leads him to a clear recognition of the importance of nasal vowels in French (even if his articulatory description of the nasal vowels leaves something to be desired). In phonology, he aspires to a greater level of abstraction through his attempts to link liaison and elision phenomena to French phonotactics. In morpho-syntax, he uses the notion of perfection in language to provide an underlying structure in which the syntactic and the logical structure are explicit. He then explains how the languages in question ‘circumlocute’ to express the underlying structures. In this way, he prefigures the work of Meigret in French grammar. For all of his accomplishments, however, Palsgrave’s work had little influence on his successors. It had only one printing of 750 copies, and Palsgrave himself restricted the sales. Still, the work deserves our attention because of its wealth of detail and because of the method it uses.

Abstract
Speaking is one of the language skills that must be trained and practiced regularly. The pictures could help expressing themselves, but they could give a hindrance to learners when they do not know the vocabulary. This is the reason this research is being conducted. The objective of this research is to describe whether there are any differences in the ability of students in the second semester of the French Language Teaching program to pass the oral test based on stimulating pictures and stories. The research approach is descriptive and quantitative. This research uses content validity and the product-moment correlation formula to measure reliability. The data obtained is then analyzed using the t-test formula. According to the calculation, t-calculation> t-table, t-calculation = 2.7 and t-table = 1.94. So the proposed hypothesis is accepted. This means that there is a significant difference in the skills of students speaking between those with visual stimuli or pictures and those who do not

Summary It is generally assumed that the copulas (d/n)a and de in the creoles of Suriname emerged due to processes of reanalysis and grammaticalization from that and there, respectively. While Arends (1989) argued that these processes were triggered and guided by substrate influence, McWhorter (1997a) explicitly excludes such influence. Neither of the two studies is conclusive, however, since they did not examine in sufficient detail relevant data from the primary substrate input. The aim of the present study is to fill this gap by exploring in detail the copular domain in the Eastern Maroon Creole (EMC), a conservative descendant of the early Suriname Creole, and its main input languages, the varieties of Gbe and Kikongo. The comparative analysis reveals close similarities between the three languages. When combined with findings from diachronic research (Arends 1986, 1989), these finding suggests that the overall make-up of the copular domain emerged due to influence from the primary substrate input, particularly from Gbe. The main functional and distributional properties of (d/n)a were modeled on the demonstrative pronoun that functioning as a resumptive pronoun in non-native varieties of English and on the focus markers in the substrate languages. Those of de were based on the non-nominal copulas in the substrate varieties and on the locative adverb there in existential construction. Subsequent to their emergence, they were affected by language-internal change. Summary This paper presents a historical and typological interpretation of Slavic constructions of the type Ru čto za, Po co za, and the like, traditionally regarded as syntactic calques of the German was für. Basing his arguments on cross-linguistic and diachronic data, the author asserts that there is no solid evidence to assume that these Slavic constructions, as well as their Baltic equivalents of the type Li kàs pe , could have been influenced by the parallel German pattern. Taking into account evolutionary traits as evidenced in the Indo-European morphosyntactic type, the author claims independent development of such constructions in German, Slavic and Baltic. Résumé Cet article présent une interprétation historique et typologique des tournures slaves du type de čto za en russe, co za en polonais, etc., qui sont traditionnellement traitées en tant que calques de l’allemand was für. S’appuyant sur des données comparatives et diachroniques, l’auteur soutient qu’il n’y a pas lieu de croire que les tournures slaves en question (tout comme leurs équivalents baltes du type de lit. kàs pe) soient calquées sur le modèle allemand. Unter Berücksichtigung der evolutionären Eigenschaften des indogermanischen morphosyntaktischen Typs können diese Wendungen als unabhängige Entwicklungen im Germanischen, Slavischen und Baltischen verstanden werden.

The global pandemic COVID-19 has made a large difference in our minds and lives. Changes related to COVID-19 have had a significant impact on the Kazakh linguistic community as well. This paper considers the emergence of new concepts associated with greetings, color, education and linguistic changes in Kazakh linguistic society during COVID-19. The main purpose of this study is to show that some concepts related to greeting, education and learning, and ways of using colors have new content and a new quality. The research findings revealed that new words related to greetings, colors, and education had come into the language by the calque (translation-loan) method, and the elements of the English language indicate the flexibility to update the language structure. The study showed the emergence of new calque phrases caused by COVID-19, such as shyntakpen amandasy, kyzyl aymak, sary aymak, zhasyl aymak, ZOOMga shygu, and ZOOMmen otkizu; some of them have new semantic characteristics.

This article aims to examine the relationship between style and translation from two complementary perspectives: how the style of original texts fares in translation and how the style of individual translators or groups of translators sharing a common poetics becomes visible in their translated work. The first aspect is illustrated through an analysis of transitivity patterns in a passage from Henry James’s ‘The Turn of the Screw’, and of deviations from those patterns in two Catalan translations of the story. As to the second, the focus is on the notion of structural calque as displayed by the work of two prominent Catalan translators, Josep Carner and Carles Riba. Riba’s tendency to calque in his translation of Poe’s ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ is broken down into two aspects of structure: word order and transitivity.

Abstract Due to post-war American cultural predominance and the aggressive expansion of English as a world language, countless English loan words have entered German through pop culture, advertising, technological transfer, and media language. In the course of this process, cultural and linguistic receptiveness reinforced each other. Increasingly, English terms are taken over that do not denote new realia, but compete with existing TL terms. Many of these predatory loan words get lexicalized. Today, there is a tendency to not translate English terms for new items and phenomena, and a general fashion to use anglicisms instead of TL terms. This linguistic behaviour differs from the mere instrumental use of loan words. It involves assimilation/ submission to a foreign culture instead of assimilation of foreign words to one's own language. Using examples from German newspapers and magazines, this paper sets out to analyse the perceptible and hidden influence of American English on modern German. It looks at the sociocultural motives governing the coinage of loan words, loan blends, and loan translations. Résumé La prédominance culturelle des Etats-Unis et l'expansion agressive de l'anglais en tant que langue mondiale ont eu pour effet d'introduire en allemand une multitude de termes anglais empruntés à la culture pop, à la publicité, aux transferts de technologie ainsi qu'au langage utilisé par les médias. La réceptivité culturelle et la réceptivité linguistique se sont renforcées mutuellement au cours de ce processus. De plus en plus, on utilise en allemand des termes anglais qui n'introduisent pas un nouveau concept mais qui sont tout simplement en concurrence avec ceux de la langue-cible. Plusieurs de ces termes 'prédateurs' empruntés font progressivement partie du lexique. Aujourd'hui, on observe une tendance à ne pas traduire des termes anglais qui désignent un nouveau concept ou de nouveaux phénomènes, ainsi qu'une mode, généralisée, qui consiste à utiliser des anglicismes plutôt qu'un terme équivalent dans la langue-cible. Le comportement linguistique implique davantage que le simple usage des termes empruntés en tant qu'outil communicationnel: il est une assimilation voire une soumission à la culture étrangère alors qu'il devrait se contenter d'assimiler les termes étrangers dans la propre langue. L'auteur du présent article analyse l'influence décelable et masquée de l'anglais américain sur l'allemand à l'aide d'exemples empruntés à la presse et aux magazines allemands. Il examine les motifs socioculturels qui sont à l'origine de la création des mots d'emprunt, des amalgames d'emprunt et des calques.

Abstract This paper addresses the auxiliation/grammaticalization of amenazar (Spanish), dreigen (Dutch), threaten (English), against the background of the competition between the vernacular languages and Latin. It shows that the subjective reading of ‘threaten’, expressing a prediction on the basis of some kind of evidence, is a Latin calque, and that the syntactic creativity or syntactic elaboration starts from this calque. In the three cases, ‘threaten’ is combined with the semantics of ‘fall’, which indicates the roofing role of Latin. The paper shows that the pace of the constructional change from ‘threaten’ + np to ‘threaten’ + inf is different from one language to another. Spanish amenazar grammaticalizes into an auxiliary during the Renaissance of the 15th and 16th century. In the case of Dutch, by contrast, only in the Golden Age of the 17th century do writers start to use dreigen ‘threaten’ as an auxiliary. Finally, English develops the auxiliary one century later than the Dutch one. The chronological differences are explained on the basis of the cultural and linguistic elaborations typical of Golden centuries, which vary from one nation to another.

L’accent traditionnel mis sur les compétences en lecture, en écriture et en calcul dans le système scolaire se déplace vers les compétences en manipulation technologique, alors qu’on oublie fréquemment que l’apprentissage dans les domaines techniques et scientifiques peut être miné par la maîtrise insuffisante de la langue maternelle (lecture et écriture) tout comme par celle du calcul, car la littératie est à la base de l’apprentissage. En effet, nos sociétés technocratiques et mercantiles valorisent de moins en moins ce qui semble avoir été autrefois la voie royale menant à la profession de traducteur, à savoir la maîtrise du français écrit grâce au cours classique, formation dispensée par des établissements d’enseignement secondaire et post-secondaire au Canada français avant la création des cégeps, les décriant comme étant peu utiles. Le moment est arrivé de repenser les cursus de traduction professionnelle afin de tenir compte de cette nouvelle réalité en matière de littératie.

This paper discusses the development of the analytic future in Russian Romani. In this Romani dialect, an analytic future tense can be expressed by means of the two auxiliary verbs avéla ‘to come’ and léla ‘to take.’ This article argues that the development of this analytic future was induced by contact with Eastern Slavic languages. In Romani, the verb avéla also functions as the future form of the copula, thus its use as an auxiliary to derive future tense is a calque from the Slavic construction with the verb budu ‘I will.’ In the article it is argued that the use of the verb léla as an auxiliary is a “fossilized” calque from Old Russian, in which the verb jati ‘to take’ was, up to the 16th century, one of the main ways to derive the future tense. It is also shown that there is no clear semantic distinction between the two constructions, and that preference is given to one or the other depending on the areal variety or even idiolect. Finally, Soviet Romani literature offers interesting cases that demonstrate when the verb léla begins to function as a future tense copula.

Abstract This paper proposes a new linguistic method for dating the Book of Qohelet. While linguistic methods employed in previous studies of Qohelet led to the conclusion that it is a post-exilic book, they could not yield a more accurate dating. The methodology proposed here identifies calques in Qohelet that reflect Aramaic phrases of uneven distribution—i.e., phrases that occur only in the Aramaic dialects of a specific period. Two Aramaic calques serve as test cases: בשל אשר and כצל אשר. Tracing the inner-Aramaic development and distribution of their Aramaic equivalents, I conclude that these phrases evolved in Aramaic in the Hellenistic period, thus excluding a Persian-period dating of the relevant calques. The paper then briefly refers to the implications of these findings for the contextualization and interpretation of the Book of Qohelet.

L'histoire des mentalités se trouve placée en réserve de la république historienne : après avoir rendu d'éminents services, elle a reçu des hommages presque universels. Les langues allemande et anglaise, notamment, lui ont accordé l'honneur d'un néologisme calqué sur le terme français d'origine. Mais dans cette réserve, le terme a perdu de son pouvoir actif de désignation et d'incitation : certains de ses plus ardents défenseurs ont préféré la dénomination d'« anthropologie historique », désormais courante dans les intitulés de programmes et de séminaires. La réserve n'est point la mise à l'écart ni l'honorariat : la mention des mentalités apparaît ça et là, dans quelques titres ou sous-titres, ou dans des revendications implicites ou discrètes. L'histoire des mentalités n'est donc pas classée parmi les orientations ou les disciplines caduques : des articles dans des synthèses historiographiques récentes (Faire de l'histoire, La nouvelle histoire, Dictionnaire des sciences historiques) lui donnent un frêle futur, parfois proche du conditionnel.

The present study examines the representation of Ukrainian culture-specific information in Marina Lewycka’s novel A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian. Such information is encoded in lacunae and the author’s or translator’s task is to decode it using relevant translation strategies. The latter ones have been identified: 1) the strategy of domestication (equivalent or near equivalent translation); 2) the combination of domestication and foreignization (transliteration together with a near equivalent and descriptive translation, calque translation accompanied by descriptive translation); and 3) the strategy of foreignization (borrowing, transliteration alone or combined with calque translation). Graphic means such as inverted commas and italics are used to mark information as culture-specific for the reader. Ukrainian and Russian translations of the novel demonstrate that lacunae are rendered mostly with the help of the corresponding Ukrainian and Russian lexemes. It has been revealed that archaic forms can be substituted by modern ones, and both native and borrowed elements are employed. This paper also demonstrates that the procedures and means used in rendering Ukrainian culture-specific information in the source English and target Ukrainian and Russian texts aim at finding balance between the strategies of domestication and foreignization used in the presentation of culture-specific information.

AbstractThis article compares the use of calques modelled on anglicisms in different European languages, especially Spanish and German, which do not only show structural differences (e.g. with regard to the use of noun-noun compounds, which are more common in German) but also reflect different attitudes towards English. Aspects covered range from the factors generally favouring the coinage of such replacive forms, to the reasons for the emergence of different types of calques, to variations in their use and challenges concerning their identification. To unravel the main patterns and trends in calquing, this study includes numerous examples from written and oral language, i.e. items of different register affiliation, age, length, and semantic transparency. On a theoretical level, the article incorporates findings from the fields of lexicology, contact linguistics and sociolinguistics.

Abstract In Official Aramaic, l'mr, the old infinitive of the verb √'mr, became the main form capable of introducing direct speech, even when there is another verbum dicendi present. The origin of the pattern has been the subject of several studies and has been assumed to be either an Aramaic innovation or a loan from Biblical Hebrew. An examination of the distribution and syntax of the form shows that it cannot be an Aramaic innovation and is highly unlikely to be borrowed from Hebrew. It is further suggested that the pattern is an Egyptian calque.

Abstract The argument put forward in the present article is that many Polish dialectal plant names do not have folk roots. The only way to ascertain the true origin of a given name is by analysing the history of the dialectal name and related names in other languages. Such an analysis leads to the conclusion that Polish dialectal names have various origins. Some of them are truly dialectal, i.e. they originate from Polish dialects, while others are colloquial, non-dialectal native names that have been adapted by particular dialects. Yet others are relatively new loanwords and new calques, while another group originates from Old Polish forms no longer in use in non-dialectal Polish. The latter do not comprise a homogeneous category. Instead, they fall into three subcategories: Polish names originating from the Polish language or inherited from Old Slavic, old loanwords employed in Old Polish and no longer in use today except in Polish dialects, and finally, an often misclassified group of names comprising old calques. In the summary of the present study the author emphasises the importance of a diachronic and comparative approach to analysing dialectal plant names. She highlights the existence of numerous calques, especially old ones, whose presence had previously been overlooked due to their native and sometimes almost entirely dialectal character. Therefore, a superficial, synchronic analysis would not reveal their long and rich history or the fact that they also have counterparts in non-Slavic languages, indeed often have ancient roots.

English outweighs other languages as a source for linguistic borrowing in present-day Norwegian. Most of the research on this topic has considered direct lexical loans, yet observations indicate that English is increasingly burrowing its way below the lexical surface of Norwegian – evident in the rising number of calques. This study investigates how a selection of recently observed multiword calques from English are evaluated by native Norwegian speakers. This is examined through acceptability judgements among young bilingual Norwegians (n= 83, mean age 18), and among two control groups comprising 10 bilingual adults (mean age 55) and 16 minimally bilingual seniors (mean age 75), respectively. A translation test was included to compare the judgements against production data. Based on our overall findings, we suggest that increased calquing is a sign of heightened proficiency in and exposure to the English language.

Abstract Despite Church prohibitions, almost twenty medieval Bibles in Spanish survive. The Old Testament versions derived in many cases from translations from Hebrew made by Jews. These were characterized by a unique rabbinical “calque-language” that would be preserved by Sephardim for centuries after the Expulsion in 1492; but the Inquisition destroyed the medieval Jewish copies. This article studies a new witness, the oldest known: a thirteenth-century Hebrew commentary on the Hagiographa with Spanish glosses. These fully confirm the amazing continuity of the Ladino scriptolect.

This paper examines the effects and mechanisms of Old Persian contact on Biblical Hebrew. I first reevaluate the number and distribution of Old Persian loanwords in the Hebrew Bible. Then I demonstrate that there was direct contact between speakers of Old Persian and speakers of Hebrew in the Achaemenid period beginning under Artaxerxes i, before proposing the existence of two Old Persian calques in Biblical Hebrew. The distribution of these Old Persian loanwords and calques strengthens the case for distinguishing between Late Biblical Hebrew and Classical Biblical Hebrew on linguistic grounds. With one exception, these features cluster in well-known Late Biblical Hebrew texts.

Ce phénomène, largement attesté dans les documents du fonds franco-antillais des prize papers ( xvii e et xviii e siècles), fait l’objet d’une étude plus approfondie, dont les conclusions remettent en question l’hypothèse d’une origine antillaise au profit de celle du maintien d’une structure caractéristique du français en contexte colonial. Différentes hypothèses sont passées en revue afin de mieux comprendre l’apparition de ce phénomène et son maintien, en français contemporain, dans la seule aire antillaise.

Abstract The present study is a linguistic analysis of the translations of some Biblical and Mishnaic verb forms into Ladino in Pirke Avot 'Ethics of the Fathers'. The liturgical Hebrew text includes both language layers, Biblical and Mishnaic. It is read by Sephardic Jewry from Passover to Pentecost a chapter a week, and has been translated into Ladino, the Judeo-Spanish calque-type language, in a variety of places since 1552. The article focuses on the morphological aspects of the translations. The results show that whereas Ladino translators opted for literal translations of the Biblical verses, they adopted freer renditions of the less sacred Mishnaic text. The differences stem from the difference in attitudes towards the sanctity of the two linguistic layers.

This study aims to determine whether bilingual phenomena occur in the speech of Albanian bilingual students with high exposure to English, in an attempt to detect the influence of English on the Albanian language. Special attention is paid to bilingual aspects like codeswitching, lexical borrowings, calques, and hybrid compounds. Data have been gathered through participant systematic observation: Albanian bilingual students have been observed within informal settings of Pristina international schools. Their conversations have been recorded and transcribed for further analysis. The study shows that code-switching is the most common linguistic behaviour among the students under investigation. However, in addition to code-switching, lexical borrowings and calques also play a roughly equivalent role in their speech. This research provides evidence of bilingual phenomena resulting from direct, everyday language contact between English and Albanian in Pristina international schools, which aids in understanding the sociolinguistic changes brought about by such contact.

This study investigates the translation procedures of the translated cultural words on the tourism website and explores whether the cultural representation is author-oriented or reader-oriented. A descriptive qualitative research method was used in this study. Hangzhou tourism website is selected as the case. 160 cultural words were collected and extracted from the website in total. The results indicated that retention, calque, and paraphrase were widely used translation procedures, and cultural representation was author-oriented and tended to preserve the source culture. This study adds new knowledge to the existing Chinese-English online tourism translation studies and enhances the quality of tourism translation.
