Abstract:

This chapter provides an overview of ergativity in Hindi/Urdu and some related South Asian languages. Hindi/Urdu is an Indo-Aryan language that is part of a South Asian linguistic area or Sprachbund in which Indo-Aryan, Dravidian, Tibeto-Burman, and Munda languages have been in constant contact for thousands of years. Hindi/Urdu is the South Asian language that has been studied most in terms of case marking and ergativity. It thus serves as a basis for this handbook article. The distribution of ergativity in Hindi/Urdu and related languages is explored and discussed in the context of the South Asian linguistic area and with respect to various structural and semantic factors that have been adduced in the literature.

Abstract:

The book serves as a collection of articles concerning different approaches to the notion of ‘place’ in terms of contrastive studies. Out of eight articles, the first four concentrate on the place of conceptualization in languages. Next two contributions discuss the notion of ‘place’ from a more literal point of view, concentrating on the role of case and prepositional systems in the expression of place as well as on the concept of place from the pragmatic point of view, as discursive representation of places in Polish and American cultures is analysed. The third part of the book contains two articles focusing on language contact. Each of the above-mentioned contributions provides an inspiring approach to contrastive studies and further research.

Abstract:

The book constitutes the second volume of the two-volume work The history of negation in the languages of Europe and the Mediterranean. While the first volume united a rich collection of ten case studies, the current second volume turns to the patterns and processes in the historical development of the expression of negation and its interaction with indefinites from a more general theoretical perspective. The volume is subdivided into two parts, one dealing with Jespersen’s cycle and one dealing with developments affecting indefinites in the scope of negation (the quantifier and free-choice cycles), including the diachronic development of negative concord. In each case, there are relevant empirical observations across the languages of Europe and the Mediterranean. The book considers both language-internal and language-contact motivations for the changes observed, developing a generative account of the developments in terms of semantic change, reanalysis, and child-language acquisition, integrating insights from functionalist approaches that invoke language use as a motivation behind these cycles. Language contact is shown to have played a significant role in the spread of negation systems. The result is a holistic account of language change in the domain of negation, developed from comparing the diachronies of languages across Europe and incorporating insights from a wide range of theoretical perspectives.

Iberian and Translation Studies: Literary Contact Zones offers fertile reflection on the dynamics of linguistic diversity and multifaceted literary translation flows taking place across the Iberian Peninsula. Drawing on cutting-edge theoretical perspectives from a comparative standpoint and on a historically diverse body of case studies, the volume’s sixteen chapters explore the key role of translation in shaping interliterary relations and cultural identities within Iberia. Mary Louise Pratt’s contact zone metaphor is used as an overarching concept to approach Iberia as a translation(al) space where languages and cultural systems (Basque, Catalan, Galician, Portuguese, and Spanish) set up relationships either of conflict, coercion, and resistance or of collaboration, hospitality, and solidarity. In bringing together a variety of essays by multilingual scholars whose conceptual and empirical research places itself at the intersection of translation and literary Iberian studies, the book opens up a new interdisciplinary field of enquiry: Iberian translation studies. This allows for a renewed study of canonical authors such as Joan Maragall, Fernando Pessoa, Camilo José Cela, and Bernardo Atxaga, and calls attention to emerging bilingual contemporary voices. In addition to addressing understudied genres (the entremez and the picaresque novel) and the specific phenomena of self-translation, indirect translation, and collaborative translation, the book provides fresh insights into Iberian cultural agents, mediators, and institutions such as publishing houses and theatre companies. Iberian and Translation Studies: Literary Contact Zones is indispensable reading for those interested in Iberian studies, translation studies, in particular the history of translation in the Iberian Peninsula, and comparative literature.

Abstract:

The Uralic (Finno-Ugric) languages, the second largest language family in Europe, including three European nation-state languages (Hungarian, Finnish, Estonian) and a number of minority languages in Northern Eurasia, look back to a long history of research. However, a major part of this research has been conducted within diverse national traditions and institutions, it is often poorly available or available only in languages such as Russian, Finnish, or Hungarian. The aim of this book is to offer an accessible introduction to the Uralic languages, especially for linguists and students of linguistics interested in the history, typology, development, and contacts of this language family. The first part of the book includes both an historical introduction to the reconstructed Proto-Uralic and its divergence into today’s languages, and brief overviews of the status, use, and cultivation of the Uralic languages: codification and standardization, language policies and language planning, endangerment and revitalization. The second part consists of concise descriptions of the Uralic languages, and the third part includes cross-Uralic comparative studies on typologically interesting issues such as case, negation, clause structure, or information structuring.
