Abstract:
Much computer assisted language learning (CALL) material that includes tests and exercises looks attractive enough but is clearly lacking in terms of validation: the possibilities of the computer and the inventiveness of the programmers mainly determine the format of tests and exercises, causing possible harm to a fair assessment of pupils' language abilities. This article begins with a definition of computer assisted language testing (CALT), followed by a discussion of the various processes involved. E3oth advantages and disadvantages of CALT are outlined. Psychometric aspects of computer adaptive testing are then discussed. Issues of validity and reliability in CALT are acknowledged. A table of factors in CALT distinguishes between test content and the mechanics of taking a test, before, during and after a test. The various factors are examined and comprise a table for developing a CALT checklist. The article ends with a call for professional testers and developers of educational software to work together in developing CALT.

Abstract:
This paper was written as a report to the British Council's English Teaching Advisory Committee, July 1983.Despite current feelings among many that testing has come of age in CAI, there are several areas where we are still in need of better understanding. There are a number of testing techniques which can be effective if matched to our needs. One effective way to describe testing purposes and techniques is to describe the relationships between the population of all possible test items, the actual sample of this population to be used, and the learner's control of this sample. Only when correct principles of traditional testing are used, can we tap the usefulness of the computer's speed and memory to assist either the teacher or the learner.

Abstract:
This dissertation studies the interface between second language testing (SLT) and second language acquisition (SLA) as it applies to a general problem in language use: noted discrepancies between standardized test scores and local placement of University of Balamand (UOB) entrants. A series of empirically based studies were designed to highlight those factors which account for interlanguage as manifested in important aspects of verb grammar: choice of tense, use of tense sequences, subject-verb agreement, and irregular verb morphology, and to compare students' interlanguage(s) in that particular area of grammar with high versus low scores in target language English as measure of their proficiency. A Case Study was carried out on a low-intermediate proficiency level student as determined by UOB entrance test. Analysis was made of the student's choice of relevant grammatical forms in Lebanese-English interlanguage compared with native language Lebanese-Arabic, both in the domains of narration and description. A similar analysis was made of the student's use of the same grammatical forms on the placement exam task. Analysis of metacognitive strategies was also undertaken. Results showed that use of each grammatical form varied with the task rhetorical mode in the sense of converging with! diverging from what is taught. More importantly, the student's low proficiency was only reflected in the narration task, not in the description or placement exam taskThe Main Study was then undertaken on a sample of 28 students from the four DOB English proficiency levels. Primary data consisted of the students' writing on three tasks of different rhetorical modes: narration, exposition, and comparison-contrast. Secondary data consisted of verbal reports by the students, and comments by linguists and expert reviewers. The same method of the Case Study analysis was used. Quantitative results showed that the narration task had the most discriminating power; the comparison-contrast task had the least. A statistically significant difference was found between second language English and native language Arabic accuracy rate of students' use of grammatical structures. Qualitative results showed that both high and low proficiency groups lacked control over tense and tense sequences, but the high proficiency group had more control over 3rd person singular' -s' . In terms of SLA, the empirical study of verb grammar here presents a clearer understanding of multi competence. Consideration is given to the interface between SLT and SLA for the practical problem of finding the right type of test that would be a valid predictor of entrants' proficiency in English as a second language, thus leading to their placement at the right English language level.

Abstract:
Component Based Development has emerged as economical, reusable, scalable way of developing enterprise as well as embedded software applications. Testing distributed component based systems is difficult when third party components are being used in the development. Many testing methodologies that have been proposed for testing object oriented programs in the literature are being imported into component domain directly or by tuning them. But testing components involves much manual work due to the lack of information of the component. Middleware architectures like, DCOM(Distributed COM), Jini and CORBA(Common Object Request Broker Architecture) are being used in developing the distributed component applications in different vertical domains. In this thesis, a language- Distributed Object Testing Language(DOTL) for specifying the testing process and generation of distributed testing environment for CORBA based applications has been proposed. The language captures required semantics for specifying dummy servers, clients, controlling the testing process, generation of test cases, activating and deactivating objects. Many existing testing techniques can be specified using the semantics provided by the language. Faults occurring in distributed object systems, in addition to the functional errors, can be identifiable using the tool. The language provides abstract types object, argument to specify variables in the testing environment, and operations dealing with these variables to conducts necessary tests. The DOTL has been implemented on MICO(Mico Is CORBA) orb on Linux OS, with mapping of DOTL to CORBA C++.

Abstract:
This three-article dissertation addresses three different yet interrelated topics: language testing, assessment, and evaluation. The first article (Saudi Student Placement into ESL Program Levels: Issues beyond Test Criteria) addresses a crucial yet understudied issue concerning why lower-level ESL classes typically contain a disproportionate number of Saudi students. Based on data obtained from different stakeholders, the findings revealed that one-third of the study students intentionally underperformed on ESL placement tests. However, ESL administrators participating in this study provided contradicting findings. The second article explores the efficacy of (Integrating Self-assessment Techniques into L2 Classroom Assessment Procedures) by examining the accuracy of CEFR self-assessment rubric compared to students' TOEFL scores, and the extent to which gender and levels of language proficiency cause any potential score underestimation. By obtaining data from 21 ESL students attending the Center for English as a Second Language at University of Arizona, the findings revealed no statistically significant correlations between participants' self-assessed scores and their TOEFL scores. However, the participants reported that the CEFR self-assessment rubric is accurate in measuring their levels of language proficiency. On the other hand, the third article (Quality Assurance and Accreditation as Forms for Language Program Evaluation: A Case Study of Two EFL Departments in A Saudi University) provides a simulated program evaluation based on an integrated set of standards of the NCAAA (the National Commission for Academic Accreditation and Assessment) and CEA (the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation). The findings indicated that the standards of the mission, curriculum, student learning outcomes, and program development, planning, and review, were partially met, whereas the standards of teaching strategies, assessment methods, and student achievement were not.

Abstract:
Software testing is a necessary and integral part of the software quality process. It is estimated that inadequate testing infrastructure cost the US economy between $22.2 and $59.5 billion. We present Sulu, a programming language designed with automated unit testing specifically in mind, as a demonstration of how software testing may be more integrated and automated into the software development process. Sulu's runtime and tools support automated testing from end to end; automating the generation, execution, and evaluation of test suites using both code coverage and mutation analysis. Sulu is also designed to fully integrate automatically generated tests with manually written test suites. Sulu's tools incorporate pluggable test case generators, which enables the software developer to employ different test case generation algorithms. To show the effectiveness of this integrated approach, we designed an experiment to evaluate a family of test suites generated using one test case generation algorithm, which exhaustively enumerates every sequence of method calls within a certain bound. The results show over 80\% code coverage and high mutation coverage for the most comprehensive test suite generated.

Abstract:
This paper will focus on the delicate issue of assessing the language proficiency of dyslexic students in a foreign language, namely English. These learners are usually considered a sub-group of test takers because of their specific learning differences. An overview of dyslexia will be presented, shedding light on the difficulties encountered by dyslexic students during their learning process. Some of the accommodations used during the learning process will be illustrated, along with the accommodations and/or modifications allowed during language testing. Attention will also be paid to fairness and validity represented by accommodations. Moreover, the special requirements allowed by international examination boards during their high-stakes tests will be analysed. Finally, this paper will illustrate what the Italian Law takes into account for dyslexic students and how it is applied at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Italy. Keywords: dyslexia; SpLDs; language testing; learning differences; accommodations; testing validity.

Feedback on government performance can affect how much citizens trust government. The City of Buenos Aires ran an experiment testing different framings of government performance and their impact on citizens perceptions of institutional trust. Government perceptions were not changed by a language of empathy nor efficiency in communications, but trust was increased by providing positive feedback. The effect of communications had a significantly smaller impact on those already familiar with performance information, suggesting that providing information can have a long-lasting effect on citizens perceptions of government efficiency.

Abstract:
The problem of content management of multimedia data types (e.g., image, video, graphics) is becoming increasingly important with the development of advanced multimedia applications. Traditional database management systems are inadequate for the handling of such data types. They require new techniques for query formulation, retrieval, evaluation, and navigation. In this paper we develop a knowledge-based framework for modeling and retrieving image data by content. To represent the various aspects of an image object's characteristics, we propose a model which consists of three layers: (1) Feature and Content Layer, intended to contain image visual features such as contours, shapes, etc.; (2) Object Layer, which provides the (conceptual) content dimension of images; and (3) Schema Layer, which contains the structured abstractions of images, i.e., a general schema about the classes of objects represented in the object layer. We propose two abstract languages on the basis of description logics: one for describing knowledge of the object and schema layers, and the other, more expressive, for making queries. Queries can refer to the form dimension (i.e., information of the Feature and Content Layer) or to the content dimension (i.e., information of the Object Layer). These languages employ a variable free notation, and they are well suited for the design, verification and complexity analysis of algorithms. As the amount of information contained in the previous layers may be huge and operations performed at the Feature and Content Layer are time-consuming, resorting to the use of materialized views to process and optimize queries may be extremely useful. For that, we propose a formal framework for testing containment of a query in a view expressed in our query language. The algorithm we propose is sound and complete and relatively efficient.

For that, we propose a formal framework for testing containment of a query in a view expressed in our query language. The algorithm we propose is sound and complete and relatively efficient.

Gurung, M. B., Uma Pratap, N. C. T. D. Shrestha, H. K. Sharma, N. Islam, and N. B. Tamang. Beekeeping Training for Farmers in Afghanistan: Resource Manual for Trainers [in Urdu]. International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.53055/icimod.564.

Full text
Abstract:
Beekeeping contributes to rural development by supporting agricultural production through pollination and by providing honey, wax, and other products for home use and sale. It offers a good way for resource-poor farmers in the Hindu Kush Himalayas to obtain income, as it requires only a small start-up investment, can be carried out in a small space close to the home, and generally yields profits within a year of operation. A modern approach to bee management, using frame hives and focusing on high quality, will help farmers benefit most fully from beekeeping. This manual is designed to help provide beekeepers with the up-to-date training they need. It presents an inclusive curriculum developed through ICIMOD’s work with partner organizations in Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, and Nepal, supported by the Austrian Development Agency. A wide range of stakeholders – trainers, trainees, government and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), associations and federations, and private entrepreneurs – were engaged in the identification of curriculum needs and in development and testing of the curriculum. The manual covers the full range of beekeeping-related topics, including the use of bees for crop pollination; production of honey, wax and other hive products; honey quality standards; and using value chain and market management to increase beekeepers’ benefits. It also includes emerging issues and innovations regarding such subjects as indigenous honeybees, gender and equity, integrated pest management, and bee-related policy. The focus is on participatory hands-on training, with clear explanations in simple language and many illustrations. The manual provides a basic resource for trainers and field extension workers in government and NGOs, universities, vocational training institutes, and private sector organizations, and for local trainers in beekeeping groups, beekeeping resource centres, cooperatives, and associations, for use in training Himalayan farmers. Individual ICIMOD regional member countries are planning local language editions adapted for their countries’ specific conditions.

Singh, Abhijeet, Mauricio Romero, and Karthik Muralidharan. COVID-19 Learning Loss and Recovery: Panel Data Evidence from India. Research on Improving Systems of Education (RISE), September 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.35489/bsg-risewp_2022/112.

Full text
Abstract:
We use a near-representative household panel survey of ∼19,000 primary-school-aged children in rural Tamil Nadu to study the extent of ‘learning loss’ after COVID-19 school closures, the pace of recovery in the months after schools reopened, and the role of a flagship compensatory intervention introduced by the state government. Students tested in December 2021, after 18 months of school closures, displayed severe deficits in learning of about 0.7 standard deviations (σ) in math and 0.34σ in language compared to identically-aged students in the same villages in 2019. Using multiple rounds of in-person testing, we find that two-thirds of this deficit was made up in the 6 months after school reopening. Using value-added models, we attribute ∼24% of the cohort-level recovery to a government-run after-school remediation program which improved test scores for attendees by 0.17σ in math and 0.09σ in Tamil after 3-4 months. Further, while learning loss was regressive, the recovery was progressive, likely reflecting (in part) the greater take up of the remediation program by more socioeconomically disadvantaged students. These positive results from a state-wide program delivered at scale by the government may provide a useful template for both recovery from COVID-19 learning losses, and bridging learning gaps more generally in low-and-middle-income countries.
