Bakgrund: Flera länder i världen har utvecklats till multikulturella samhällen. Detta innebär nya utmaningar för sjuksköterskor i vården eftersom de kommer att träffa på patienter som inte talar samma språk som sjuksköterskorna eller har samma kultur. Detta kan leda till språkbarriärer och kulturkrockar som sjuksköterskorna måste kunna övervinna.Syfte: Syftet med uppsatsen var att genom en litteraturstudie uppmärksamma sjuksköterskornas erfarenheter av att möta patienter med olika språk och kultur än sig själva och de risker och barriärer detta kan medföra i en vårdsituation.Metod: En litteraturstudie som är baserad på vetenskapliga artiklar med kvalitativ ansats som genomgick en kvalitetsgranskning och analys. Teman identifierades därefter.Resultat: Språkbarriärer, kommunikationssvårigheter, kulturskillnader, brist på kunskap inom tolkservice och kultur identifierades som utmaningar som kunde påverka sjuksköterskans arbete negativt.Slutsats: Sjuksköterskor är i behov av mer utbildning och kunskap om hur de ska gå tillväga vid vård av patienter som inte talar samma språk eller har samma kultur som sjuksköterskorna. Sjuksköterskorna borde erbjuda vård på ett professionellt sätt oberoende av patientens bakgrund eller dennes förmåga att kommunicera.
Background: Several countries in the world have developed into multicultural societies. This means new challenges for nurses in care because they will encounter patients who do not speak the same language as the nurse or share the same culture. This can lead to language barriers and cultural clashes that nurses must be able to overcome.Aim: The aim of this study was that through a literature review draw attention to nurses' experiences of meeting patients who don’t speak the same language as the nurses of the the same cultural beliefs, and the risks and barriers that these factors may cause in a care situation.Method: A literature study that is based on ten scientific articles with a qualitative approach that were analysed and reviewed. Themes were then identified.Results: Language barriers, communication difficulties, cultural differences, lack of knowledge of interpreter services and culture were identified as challenges that could affect the nurse's work negatively.Conclusion: nurses are in need of more education and knowledge about how to proceed in the care of patients who do not speak the same language or share the same culture as the nurses. The nurses should provide health care in a professional manner regardless of the patient's background or his ability to communicate.

Abstract:
In this thesis I take an anthropological approach to examining the doctor-patient relationship and how barriers to this relationship, such as language or cultural differences, effect medical treatment. This literature review analyzes questions such as: What are the roles of medical interpreters, how can medical interpreters act as advocates for the patients, and how do they affect the trust in the doctor5patient relationship? I examine the impacts on trust of cultural differences, language barriers, and use of Medical Interpreters within the doctor-patient relationship. By better understanding the doctor-patient relationship from an anthropological perspective, I will answer questions that show how doctors and patients can establish trust, overcome language barriers, and have higher cultural competency. These answers will aid in closing the gaps between doctors and patients and renew a stronger-trusting relationship. The use of Medical Interpreters is the key to improving the relationship and overall health of limited English speaking patients.

Background: Effective communication is vital to establish a patient-nurse relation and in order for the nurse to deliver good nursing care. Mistakes and errors are more frequent when there is a language barrier between the nurse and the patient. Method: The study was made as a qualitative interview study with a phenomenological analysis. Aim: Describe how Malaysian nurses deal with language barriers during meetings with patients with another language. Result: To deliver good nursing care to patient with another language could be difficult depending on what strategies the nurses used: how nurses experience the effectiveness of non-verbal communication, how interpreters were used and who interpreted during the patient meeting, strategies nurses used when interpreter was not an option, nurses’ interest in learning about the patient’s culture. Conclusion: To overcome language barriers is complex and often more than one strategy is needed. Patient safety is compromised when there were language barriers between the nurse and the patient.

Abstract:
Background Communication is vital to patient-doctor interactions especially in emergency centres (EC). It is evident from international and South African studies that language barriers result in suboptimal clinical outcomes, increased use of already limited resources and poor patient satisfaction. In the Western Cape, initiatives such as community trained interpreters, telephonic services and multilingual language policies have been implemented to improve communication between doctors and patients. Objectives This study was done to ascertain to what extent language barriers are perceived to still exist by doctors in emergency centres in secondary public hospitals in Cape Town. Methods A quantitative on-line survey of full time doctors in the ECs of six urban secondary public hospitals in Cape Town was conducted in October 2019. Data was collected over a 5 week period and covered demographics, languages spoken, (self-reported) fluency of languages spoken, languages encountered, perceived occurrence of language barriers, perceived impact of language barriers and strategies currently implemented to overcome these barriers. Results Of the 119 doctors invited to complete the survey, 74 eligible responses were received. Language barriers still exist in secondary public hospitals in the Western Cape. The majority of doctors spoke Afrikaans and no isiXhosa speaking doctors took part in the survey. Half of the doctors surveyed stated they would not be able to take a history in isiXhosa without an interpreter. Most (97%) of doctors had not heard of community trained interpreters and only 23% had ever used the telephone interpretation service available. Perceived consequences of language barriers include: inability or longer duration to get a history, increased use of resources, and patients returning because they did not fully understand the treatment plan. Informal interpreters such as nursing staff and family members were used most often to overcome language barriers. No official interpreters were available to assist in person and doctors are either unaware of telephonic interpreting services or woefully under-using this service. Due to language barriers, doctors are left feeling frustrated with themselves or sad for the patients that they are meant to be helping due to language barriers. Conclusion Reintroduction of community based interpreters, teaching doctors more languages and investment into technologyaided translation services are possibilities that have been suggested by doctors and could be researched further to help improve the current situation.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the complex questions of what the obstacles are to becoming nativelike and how they can be overcome. Questions for framing the literature review are developed by means of a down-to-earth preliminary case study of a nativelike French learner of English. The subsequent literature review focuses on key issues such as the supply of input, attention to input, output practise opportunities, attention to output, identity, and learning motivation. An 'ideal' model for reaching nativelikeness is established for further investigation. More specifically, five conditions for overcoming barriers to reaching nativelikeness are hypothesised. In order to test these five conditions, an investigation is reported into the learning of Mandarin by a cohort of undergraduate students of Mandarin at a British university. Using carefully constructed interview questions and questionnaires, details were gathered of their knowledge, approach and attitude to learning, and how they lived during their year abroad in China. Their nativelikeness was judged by independent monolingual Chinese listeners. The main findings are that there are different learning obstacles in the process of L2 learning for different learners, due to both their different language learning experiences and their particular stances relative to the target language. The key conclusion of the study is that nativelikeness is most likely to be achieved when learners have a persistent motivation to speak in a nativelike manner, develop an open/adaptive sense of identification with the L2 native group, have a guaranteed supply of on-going 'ideal' input, and achieve a 'balanced' attention to both input and output.

Abstract:
This research study was designed to improve the quality of health care received by the Hispanic population in northeast Tennessee. After reviewing past research, it is evident that the Hispanic population reports a lower level of health care satisfaction and a greater number of health disparities. Although attempts to reconcile this problem have included implementing regulations and guidelines on the cultural competency of and the provision of language services by health care providers, no measurable improvement has been noted. To positively impact this pervasive problem, the focus must shift away from how health care agencies can affect health care for Hispanics, and toward how health care providers can improve patient care. It is the responsibility of health care providers to provide quality care to all patients, regardless of their culture, race, or language. By interviewing three primary care nurse practitioners who serve a large Hispanic population in northeast Tennessee, it became evident that even with a language aide present, barriers to caring for this population still exist, although these barriers are not unsurmountable. Through years of experience, these providers have developed skills that have improved communication with, and health-related outcomes of, Hispanic patients, but this type of care should not be impacted by nurse practitioner turnover. Each provider agreed that nursing students’ education and opportunities to work with diverse populations while in basic nursing education programs must be improved, so that when students graduate, they can become part of the solution to this ongoing problem.

Abstract:
This thesis examines how students, aged 13-15, with a mother tongue other than Swedish, experience learning English in school. This is important since there is an increasing number of bilinguals and multilinguals learning English in schools in Sweden and around the world. Several concepts are presented and discussed that have been argued to pose barriers to bilingual and multilingual language learning. Semi-structured interviews were undertaken with ten students, aged between 13 and 15. The empirical material shows that bilingual and multilingual students usually refer to Swedish, even when their mother-tongue may be a better reference for learning English. This is because teachers commonly refer to Swedish grammar rules in attempting to clarify English grammar rules and the textbooks used to support the learning process are in Swedish. This may pose problems for the learning process, particularly for students who are not proficient in Swedish. The study also highlights the importance of diagnosing bilingual students' L1 and L2 on a regular basis to see when the optimum time is to be exposed to English language learning rather than the current approach of immersing them in English learning without considering the other language learning processes the student may be engaged in. The study also found that students commonly perceived their English to be proficient even though they had poor grades. One possible reason for this is that they manage well in their day-to-day engagement with computer games, films and social media while formal English learning, including aspects such as grammar and writing, require a different type of application. Finally, the thesis describes how important high metalinguistic awareness is for language learning and it is suggested that additional research focuses on how this conceptual understanding can be translated in practitioner tools useful for teachers. Schools need to create an environment that values and supports multilingual students’ language competence and an early national diagnostic test would help to support those conditions.

There is a disparity of mathematics achievement between native English speakers and English language learners (ELL). This study sought to understand the barriers ELL kindergarten students faced in being successful in mathematics. The purpose of this qualitative, instrumental case study was to explore kindergarten teachers' perceptions regarding English language learner's access to the mathematics curriculum and instruction. The conceptual foundation for this study drew from social development theory, which contends social interaction using language is necessary for cognitive development such as learning mathematics concepts. Individual interviews of 8 kindergarten teachers were conducted to understand kindergarten teachers' perceptions of the barriers ELLs face in accessing the math curriculum. The interviews were recorded, transcribed, and categorized using typological analysis. Answers to the interview questions were segregated into the categories of professional development, needs of students, and base mathematics program materials. The central finding was that the base program was perceived as a barrier for ELLs. Evaluation of the existing mathematics curriculum for effectiveness is recommended. This study may contribute to social change by increasing educator and stakeholder awareness of the barriers ELLs face in accessing the mathematics curriculum. This study also provides guidance to policymakers and educators information to develop culturally competent mathematics instruction, thereby assisting ELL students in overcoming barriers to learning mathematics.

Background: In Namibia there are a lot of different native languages even if the official language is English. Since communication is an important tool for nurses and studies about communication across language barriers mostly is done in western countries, there is need for more knowledge regarding the nurse's experience with language barriers in multilingual and multicultural context, like Namibia. Aim: To describe the experiences of Namibian nurses caring for patients who speak another native language. Method: Qualitative interviews were held with four nurses and one student nurse at Katutura State hospital in Windhoek, Namibia. Results: Two themes with subthemes were identified in the results. The first theme, Establishing the patient-nurse relationship, describes the importance of trust for communication and what the interviewees found important when creating a bond with the patient. The other theme, Establishing the communication, describes the importance of interpretation and how they tackled the language barrier. Conclusion: When meeting a patient with another native language it is of great importance to establish trust with the patient and that interpreters are used. The use of sublingual nurses, who found interpreting to be a natural part of their work, was beneficial.

Abstract:
Testifying can be a highly stressful and taxing experience for an eyewitness. When testifying in a non-native language, the native language may interfere with the memory retrieval process. Thus, non-native speaking eyewitnesses face additional difficulties when providing their testimonies. However, it is unknown how the language barrier may affect the accuracy of the testimony. A sample of 33 Swedish-speaking participants were shown a mock crime film and gave a testimony in either a native or non-native (English) language. Ratings of perceived cognitive effort, perceived credibility and confidence of the testimony were also given. No significant differences were found. However, small differences were found with non-native speaking participants reporting fewer correct details, lower confidence, and lower perceived credibility. This could suggest that the judicial system needs to be aware of the difficulties faced by non-native speaking eyewitnesses and take these into account when evaluating these witnesses in order to achieve legal certainty. Sample size, other limitations and suggestions for future research is further discussed.

Abstract:
This thesis explores how reasonable adjustments, informed by student insights, can be developed through professional collaboration between teachers and speech pathologists. By addressing a gap in the literature, this study offers guidance for teachers about how to adjust pedagogical practices for students with language difficulties to address language-based barriers in inclusive secondary classrooms. A sequential-phase mixed-method design was used and repeat data collection with teachers (a comparison group and an intervention group) investigated the impact of a collaborative planning process. This research indicates that adjustments based on student insights have a positive impact on student learning and teacher practices.

Abstract:
The international success of crime stories from the Nordic countries has made its transition from the literature market to television. In the United Kingdom, these programmes have received many viewers, and much press attention. This thesis will look at ratings leader The Bridge, to look into the reasons why a programme in Danish and Swedish has managed to attract almost two million viewers weekly in a television market usually resistant to non-English language programmes. Using a combination of a close textual analysis of The Bridge, along with qualitative respondent interviews with audiences members, this thesis has found that perceived realism, strong characterisation, and realistic female characters, are what the audience enjoy about The Bridge. The programme engages with production techniques which the audience are very familiar with, meaning that while the language the characters speak is foreign, the way the narrative, and action is communicated is not. The findings bring new discussions about Nordic Noir, where previous criticism has centred on the scenery, social discourses and the exoticism of the Danish and Swedish languages as explanations for the British popularity.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to explore the design of a digital communication tool for caregiver-patient communication with language barriers. This is done through a case study at Worldish, a company that develops a digital communication tool named Helen. An iterative service design approach is used in the case study to understand enablers and complicators for usage of a digital communication tool in care consultations with language barriers. Also, for investigating how the design of such tool better can be adapted to fit the service process of a care consultation. The case study is divided into phases where the first two, phase A and B, investigates the care consultation process with and without language barriers as well as how a digital communication tool is used in this process. These phases results in several insights about what in the care consultation process with language barriers that enable and complicates the usage of a digital communication tool. In total, this thesis identifies four enabling factors and six complicating factors for usage of a digital communication tool in the care consultation process. In the third and fourth phase, phase C and D, two design-iterations are conducted where design ideas are ideated, prototyped and tested with users. These phases results in design features and insights connected to how the design of a digital communication tool can better be adapted to the service process. In total this thesis identifies six guidelines that serves as inspiration for someone who wants to create or adapt the design of a digital communication tool to the service process in a care consultation with language barriers.

Tourism to Spain is a significant part of the Spanish economy especially on the southern coastal areas which attracts a huge number of foreign tourists, in particular, a large number of British. Over the years many have chosen this area as their permanent or semi-permanent home and thus creating pockets of English speaking communities along the coast. This is evidenced by the presence of the many English owned and operated businesses coupled with the fact that there is a high number of Spanish who speak English. On the surface the communities appear to be economically self-supporting and socially independent of their Spanish hosts so perhaps it should be of little surprise that there is a low level of Spanish language uptake in these communities. Quite clearly the “need” has been removed and so the majority of people seem to struggle to string a basic sentence together. The basis of this thesis is research into the community of British seasonal tourists with particular emphasis on integration through language learning. The target group is a defined demographic of retirees who spend approximately six months over the Northern European winter period in Spain. They still have their own home in the UK and do not call Spain home. Their level of language uptake is very low. Language is a fundamental part of our own social identity and culture and is a significant factor in integration. Therefore in order to understand why there appears to have been little uptake of Spanish language learning by this group, it is important to look at the elements that may have had an influence on their decision making process. Learning another language, particularly for older people, can prove to be challenging if not extremely difficult. Initially the barriers are identified as being age, financial situation, lack of encouragement from spouses or peers and lack of self-confidence.

Abstract:

Research reveals that for American secondary teachers, mere participation, or the desire to participate, in professional development is not a matter of concern, as many in the educational community have assumed. Yet, there is a void in the literature regarding American, lower secondary educators of literacy and their overall perceptions of professional learning. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand the perceptions of lower secondary English language arts (ELA)/literacy teachers, specifically in regard to what motivates these educators to participate in professional development, what they value in professional learning opportunities, the challenges that keep them from participating, and their overall professional development needs.

This qualitative study draws on two theoretical frameworks, constructivism and adult learning theory, as there are varied philosophies that contribute to the understanding of a teacher’s perception of professional learning. A non-experimental, phenomenological methodology was chosen, aiming to better understand participant’s individual experiences through their comprehensive, self-reported descriptions. The population of this study consisted of experienced, lower secondary ELA/literacy teachers employed in southern California public schools. Purposive, criterion sampling was used for this research, collecting data from a total of 13 semi-structured interviews of participants from two school districts.

The findings from this study resulted in five thematic categories that present the essential drivers and impediments to the participants’ involvement in professional learning opportunities: (a) teachers desire to improve their professional practice, (b) professional learning should be immediately applicable to professional practice, (c) teachers prefer to learn from other experienced teachers, (d) the culture of the school district and or site influences teacher learning, and (e) a teacher’s learning is influenced by their perception of themselves and previous experiences. Six conclusions were drawn from the thematic findings of this study. They rely upon the literature and findings to argue how teachers’ motivation, personal values, and aspirations for participation in professional learning opportunities is centered on personal and organizational factors along with the historical and current culture of American K-12 public schools.

Literary works contribute to the traditions of culture and unity. Gottfried Keller uses this notion to portray a realistic image of his society in which there is a need for social and political change and progression. Keller's novella Das Fähnlein der Sieben Aufrechten explores the discontinuity between generations in nineteenth-century Switzerland. This investigation explores Keller's presentation of his critique through the portrayal of the existing barriers between generations. It examines how Keller's novella depicts to overcome generational differences through the breaking down of these barriers. In addition, it discusses how a contemporary portrayal adapts and interprets Keller's novella.

A disproportionate number of high school dropouts are Latino immigrant students with emergent English language skills. Statistically, students that meet these demographic characteristics are more likely to drop out of high school before receiving their diploma. Thus, these same students will then enter the workforce ill equipped for job advancement or the requirements of postsecondary education.

A set of negative experiences, referred to as the process of marginalization, may occur in high school, leaving these students alienated and less confident of success than their English-speaking peers. This study used a qualitative research method approach to investigate the factors that lead some high school students to drop out and others to persevere and to become academically successful. This situation was explored by trying to understand Mexican and Central American immigrant students' perceptions of and reactions to possible high school marginalization processes and how this process effects their academic success in 11th and 12th grades.

More specifically, this dissertation study employed a qualitative design to develop a case study of students and a school and community profile. Several instruments used in the study included a sampling and eligibility questionnaire, a semistructured questionnaire, and an open-ended Interview with high school Latino immigrant youth to examine their perceptions of the process of marginalization and the resiliency factors that they used to overcome them. Based on the study's results, several recommendations are made for schools to reform the negative impact of marginalization and increase feelings of empowerment and inclusion for this group

Language barriers in eyewitness testimonies may pose threats toward witnesses’ accuracy, and consequently on the outcome of judicial procedures. The present study aims to investigate the credibility and the extent of reported detail information of eyewitnesses’ testimony of a crime event, when the testimony is given in witnesses’ first language, second language, or second language through interpreter. Moreover, the study examines whether eyewitness suggestibility is affected by the language to which the testimony is provided. Participants (N=60) were exposed to a mock crime event and subsequently performed memory tests about that event. Results showed no differences in accuracy of suggestibility between experimental conditions. The personality trait social desirability showed no relation to suggestibility or the extent of inaccurate detail information provided in the present study. The findings are discussed in the context of implications, limitations and future directions.

It investigates what challenges MNC subsidiary managers experience whilecommunicating and interacting with people from different cultures.For this study, semi-structured interviews were conducted, and the respondents were ofSwedish and Japanese nationality holding management positions at IKEA Japan.The research concluded that the respondents experienced the barriers differently, some feltstressed over uncertainty while others felt excited. A common theme across all the barriers waslanguage difficulties. Language differences were the most prominent stumbling block.Nonverbal communication was of greater importance to the respondent that does not speakJapanese well and is often used as a tool to aid verbal communication.The respondents did not see stereotyping and ethnocentrism as a clear hindrance to interculturalcommunication. However, from their responses, it is evident that there are some issues. TheJapanese tend to bunch all Westerners together and assume they are unable to speak Japaneseand understand Japanese customs. The Japanese have a strong sense of pride in their cultureand a strong preference for speaking Japanese. The Swedish managers may even lose therespect of Japanese co-workers if they do not speak Japanese perfectly.

Research indicates that general and mental healthcare services have been, and continue to be, underutilized by racial and ethnic minorities. Studies point to the language gap between limited English proficiency (LEP) individuals and mental-health clinicians as one of the factors in perpetuating that gap. Despite the legal and professional mandates that require professionals in healthcare to provide and use language interpreters in giving care, psychologists rarely make use of professional interpreters when conducting psychotherapy. Most clinicians have little experience providing mental-health treatment across differences in language, and it is supposed that clinicians usually receive little or no training on how to address those differences. This study involved a national survey of all APA-accredited programs to ascertain how student trainees are currently being prepared to work with language interpreters in professional training programs and to evaluate potential barriers to the implementation of training guidelines for use in those programs. Findings indicated that several instructors are addressing the use of language interpreters through a variety of pedagogical approaches. Guidelines for clinical practice with interpreters were also evaluated and ranked so as to establish consensus on the necessary competencies. Implications for instructors are also included.

Metod: En deskriptiv intervjustudie genomfördes med sju sjuksköterskor på kirurgiska vårdavdelningar på ett universitetssjukhus för att kunna beskriva sjuksköterskors upplevelser som svarade på studiens syfte. Materialet analyserades deduktivt i enlighet med Graneheim& Lundmans kvalitativa innehållsanalys (2004). Resultat: Respondenterna upplevde att kommunikationssvårigheter beroende på språkliga skillnader ofta leder till problem efter första mötet med patienten, som information kring vården som bedrivs, utförande av omvårdnadsåtgärder och patientens möjlighet att delta i sin egen vård. Slutsats: Sjuksköterskor upplevde att omvårdnaden kring patienter som de ej delar språk med påverkas negativt, patientdelaktigheten och autonomin kränks och att en mer generös rutin kring tolkanvändning behövs. Det förekommer dock att en kreativ inställning påverkar förmågan att kommunicera positivt.
Purpose: To investigate nurses' experiences of how communication influence the nursepatient relationship, care and nursing with a patient whose languageisn’t handled by the nurse. Method: A descriptive interview study was performed on seven nurses in the surgical care units on a university hospital to describe nursesexperiences to answer the purpose of the study in detail. The material was analyzed deductively according to Graneheim&Lundmans qualitative content analysis (2004). Results: Respondents urged that communication difficulties due to language differences often lead to problems after the first meeting with the patient, as information on health care conducted, the performance of nursing interventions and patient the opportunity to participate in their own care. Conclusion: Nurses experienced that care about the patientsthey do not share the language with to be negatively affected, patient participation and autonomy was violated and that a more generous routine with interpreters is needed. There is however, that a creative approach affects the ability to communicate positively.

Abstract:
This research study was aimed at the Grade 2 Afrikaans Home Language learners who encounter reading, comprehension and phonics barriers in an inclusive classroom. The Grade 2 Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) Home Language curriculum and pass requirements that the learners have to master in the mainstream, was a major concern. Consequently, seventy per cent of the Grade 2 Afrikaans learners have already failed Grade 1 or 2; and some seemed to be borderline cases; as their pace of development was so slow. The intervention programme was implemented intensively outside normal school hours, through qualitative and quantitative data collection, known as the multi-method. The research approaches were conducted through action research and case-study research. Bronfenbrenner’s model indicated that intrinsic and extrinsic factors cannot be disregarded in the learner’s holistic development; therefore, parent involvement was vital during the research study. As the Individual Learner Support Team (ILST) coordinator at the research school, I have experienced the despair and perplexity of the teachers, when dealing with teaching challenges; but also, that of the learners, who face barriers to learning. A sample of six learners was identified; and one parent in each household was active during the study. The parent’s responses varied from limited to worthy feedback throughout the intervention programme. The learners’ responses were observed during the intervention programme, the classroom situation; and their perceptions during the semi-structured interviews were recorded. The intervention programme links with the Screening, Identification, Assessment and Support of SIAS process; and it involved the assistance of a remedial expert by applying remedial education, without psychometric tests. The findings revealed that the learner must be intrinsically motivated to co-operate fully. And this relates to both intrinsic and extrinsic influences. Recommendations are offered to the various stakeholders, who are directly or indirectly engaged in the learner’s scholastic development, to ensure corrective and supportive measures, which are conducive to learning.

Background: South Africa experiences a severe shortage of speech-language therapists (SLTs) which results in individuals requiring Speech-Language Therapy (SLT) services having to travel long distances or being placed on long waiting lists to access services. Rehabilitation Care Workers can assist with bringing this service closer to the communities they serve. It is important to explore the experiences of these individuals to ensure that they are adequately supported and skilled. The University of Cape Town (UCT) has been training Rehabilitation Care Workers (RCWs) since 2012, however to there is currently no empirical data documenting the facilitators and barriers experienced by RCWs in their work. Aim: To explore RCWs (in the Mitchells Plain/Klipfontein sub-structure) perceptions of the facilitators and barriers in providing SLT related activities in their work context. Methods: A descriptive exploratory study was conducted. Eighteen RCWs were approached and 13 participated in 2 focus groups. Data was transcribed and analysed using thematic analysis. An inductive approach was used to develop meaningful themes and sub-themes. Results: The plot of “vital role players” best synthesized the 3 main themes namely scope of practice, RCW position and value as an intrinsic motivator and challenges. : The scope of practice theme included 4 sub-themes namely, RCW activities; awareness of broad scope; understanding family needs; including family as stakeholders in patient management. RCW position and value as an intrinsic motivator - included 4 sub-themes namely, integral members of the team; agents for change; community servants; go between formal structures and the community. Finally the theme challenges –included 4 sub-themes namely, training gaps; safety; lack of resources; feeling undervalued. The facilitators and barriers identified by the RCW’s aligned with perceptions of other mid-level health care workers as reported in the literature. Implications: RCWs work within a family centred care approach and see themselves as community servants who bring vital rehabilitation services into homes by transferring their skills to families and communities through education, support and advocacy. Despite their value and passion, RCWs feel undervalued by those around them, including management structures and the Department of Health (DOH). Conclusion: RCWs can bring much needed rehabilitation services into the homes of communities in Cape Town. For this reason, it is imperative to consider the facilitators and barriers experienced by these individuals in order to harness their natural skills and strengthen the current RCW service and solidify their roles within the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT).

Aim and research question: The aim of this study is to investigate how high skilled foreign intellectual individuals are integrated in the job market in Gävle city. The research questions are: How does the job situation for foreign born graduates look like in Gävle city today? What factors and barriers affect the integration of high skilled foreign born graduates on the job market in Gävle city? Method: In our study the data was collected by open questionnaires and interviews as well as from different databases. The respondents consisted of foreign born graduates, politicians, representatives from the private and public sector. Although the data collection was mostly of qualitative nature some quantitative tools are used in this study such as charts and pie charts to give a more common view of the sampled group’s responses. The way we choose to work on the study was in an deductive manner as we started out in observations and later try to explain them with theory. When trying to find these theories we used textbooks and scientific articles to gather explanations by different authors.Results and conclusions: Our main findings where that the main barrier for the employers towards foreign born graduates is failure to communicate with them because of culture crash. The second most common barrier named by employers is the language. The third most common problem is related to contact networks. From the graduate point of view the first thing they name is lack of information as their biggest problem. The second most common problem for graduates is the language and the third most common problem they name discrimination which according to us is an effect of culture crash. Our conclusion and recommendation is that to help employers seeking qualified personal, and to help foreign born graduates to look for the right jobs, i.e. encourage these two streams to meet. There is work needed to be done in two directions the employers need to be informed with more relevant information about cultural background of foreign born graduates and for the public sector to provide better orientation to the foreign born graduates in the Swedish system. We have through our respondents learned that there indeed exists a level of brain waste. The theoretical implication from this study is that the research adds to strengthen existing theories. When talking about culture, according to the respondents it is important that an employer has a knowledge of diversity. Culture and language has been confirmed as barriers towards the job market by all respondents. The study also confirmed factors which hinders integration of foreign born graduates to the job market. These factors are: Hazards, disadvantages and integration containing lack of information, lack of guidance, proper job seeking tools, stereotypes and discrimination. The study shows a low priority of social integration among the foreign born respondents, versus learning the Swedish language and looking for jobs in Gävle city.   Key words: integration, job market, barriers, culture, language, foreign, Sweden

Objectives: To explore and describe the attitudes of pharmacy preceptors regarding the instruction of international student pharmacists. Methods: Two focus groups were held, involving a total a ten pharmacy preceptors associated with the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy, the majority of whom had prior experience working with international pharmacy scholars. Results: Preceptors reported a number of both benefits and challenges associated with instructing international scholars. They benefited from the students’ contribution to the pharmacy team, and from the exposure to different cultures. The challenges they encountered primarily involved the language barrier, cultural differences, and differences in knowledge and training compared to local students. Conclusions: Preceptors reported overall positive experiences in working with international pharmacy scholars, and also faced a number of challenges.

The AIMS of this study are to: (1) Explore the perceptions and experiences of diabetes consultations from the perspectives of Pakistani patients, health professionals and interpreters (when one was involved). (2) Identify the processes and mechanisms which hinder or foster effective communication between healthcare professionals and their patients. (3) Provide recommendations for ways in which communication can be improved between healthcare professionals and their Pakistani patients STUDY DESIGN: A prospective qualitative study was developed, comprising three sequential components; namely: In-depth interviews with patients prior to a diabetes consultation; observation of the consultation; and, in-depth interviews with patients, health professionals and interpreters (when one was involved) following the consultation. Data were collected in the form of 10 detailed case studies. Each case study involved a Pakistani patient with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), their practitioner (s) involved in the consultation and an interpreter (if one was used). SAMPLE: Five male and five female Pakistani with T2DM (aged 41-80 years), 12 practitioners (some patients consulted with two people) and three interpreters (two professional and one lay) were recruited through health services and personal contacts within Edinburgh’s Pakistani community. Individual case studies were thematically analysed before all the case studies were compared/contrasted to identify cross-cutting themes. FINDINGS: Alongside language, a range of barriers and issues were identified which impacted upon communication between patients and health professionals in the consultations observed. Because of previous experiences of attending consultations in the UK and also in Pakistan, patients tended to come to their diabetes consultations with limited expectations; namely, to have their medication reviewed and receive test results. Consequently, patients tended not to raise health concerns and other issues unless they perceived these to be directly relevant to the consultation. In some cases, this resulted in patients not disclosing important information relating to their diabetes management and led to health professionals making inappropriate treatment recommendations. The routine and predictable nature of these diabetes review consultations meant that patients could be passive, offer very little information and ‘get by’ in their consultations; for instance, by offering responses after guessing what the professional was asking. As a result, some health professionals were unaware of patients’ poor English and of how little they had understood during the consultation. Health professionals found it difficult to establish understanding and rapport with patients who adopted a passive role in their consultations. This hindered them from identifying, and appropriately addressing, gaps in patients’ diabetes knowledge and any concerns they may have had. Interpreters did not always address the language barrier and edited and misinterpreted information. This is partly because they struggled to interpret medical terminology. However, this research also revealed how interpreters can experience dilemmas and role conflicts by virtue of being members of the same closely-knit Pakistani community as the patients they interpret for. Some of the barriers identified during this study also arose because patients tended to see different professionals at every visit which discouraged patient-provider relationships from being established. CONCLUSION: Patients would benefit from receiving ‘continuity in care’ and education and training on how to use their consultations more effectively. Providers would also benefit from education and training on more effective ways to communicate with these patients.

The independent, complex role of a school nurse requires accurate documentation of assessments, interventions, and outcomes. Consistent documentation by all school nurses is crucial to study the impact of nursing interventions on children's health and success in school. While standardized nursing languages are available, the actual use of these languages is in the infancy stages of implementation. This national survey of school nurses reveals diverse practices in school nursing documentation. Using Everett Rogers' (2003) Diffusion of Innovation (DOI) theory, a web-based survey allowed respondents to identify their knowledge and attitude towards the use of standardized languages, including NANDA International (NANDA-I), Nursing Interventions Classification (NIC), and Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC). Respondents also rated barriers to adopting the use of NANDA-I, NIC, and NOC (NNN). The results of this survey serve as a foundation for moving the practice of school nursing towards consistent documentation. Ultimately, the implementation of NNN will allow school nurses to document more consistently, base practice decisions on evidence, and improve the health and academic success of children in schools.

Sammanfattning Bakgrund: Migranter som inte behärskar majoritetsspråket har rätt till vård av hög kvalitet och säkerhet som alla andra patienter. Enligt patientlagen (2014:821) har alla patienter rätt till individuellt anpassad information om deras tillstånd och behandling. Detta kan försvåras på grund av dålig kommunikation. Sjuksköterskor behöver därmed ha en tydlig förståelse för hur minoritetsspråkiga patienter upplever vården och vilka utmaningar de ställs inför. Syfte: Syftet var att beskriva upplevelser i kontakt med vården hos patienter som talar ett minoritetsspråk, samt att beskriva undersökningsgrupperna i artiklarna som ingick i litteraturstudien. Metod: Studien är en beskrivande litteraturstudie av elva vetenskapliga artiklar med kvalitativ ansats och en med mix-metod ansats. Sökningarna gjordes i databaserna CINAHL och PubMed. Huvudresultat: Analysen av de inkluderade artiklarna resulterade i tre huvudteman: 1) upplevelser av utanförskap, på grund av brist på information och delaktighet i den egna vården, 2) upplevelser av försämrad vårdkvalitet i form av felaktig behandling, otillfredsställande bemötande hos vårdgivare och missade möjligheter till vård och stöd, samt 3) upplevelser av beroende av hjälp med tolkning. Det var totalt 536 deltagare i de valda artiklarna. Antal år i det nya landet varierade mellan 0-40 år. Slutsats: Språkbarriärer hos minoritetsspråkiga patienter kan leda till negativa upplevelser som sjuksköterskor inte alltid är medvetna om. Kunskap om vilka utmaningar och ångestskapande moment som kan finnas hos patienten kan hjälpa sjuksköterskor att förutse och förebygga språkrelaterade problem och minska de negativa upplevelserna.
Abstract Background: Immigrants who cannot speak majority languages have a right to safe and high-quality healthcare, just as all the other patients. According to the Swedish Patient Act (2014:821), every individual has the right of tailored information about their health and treatment. This can be challenging due to poorly functioning communication. Nurses need to have a better understanding of those challenges that minority patients experience when in contact with healthcare. Aim: To describe the challenges, experienced by minority language patients, when in contact with nurses and to describe the participant groups of the studies included in the review. Method: A descriptive literature study of eleven qualitative studies and one mixed-method study. The searches were made in CINAHL and PubMed databases. Main results: The analysis of the included articles resulted in three main themes: 1) experiences of being alienated due to lack of information and participation in one’s own care 2) experiences of worsen quality of care by way of wrong treatment, unsatisfactory attitude from the healthcare professionals and missed opportunities, and 3) feelings of dependence on those who help with interpreting. There was a total of 536 participants in the selected studies, who had been residing in the new country between 0-40 years. Conclusions: Language barriers can lead to a range of negative feelings, experienced by minority patients. Nurses might not be aware of them. Knowledge about these challenges and oppressive moments can help nurses to anticipate and prevent language related problems. Herewith, patients negative experiences might be reduced.

Pentecostals from the former Soviet Union are the most recent and fastest growing refugee group in Oregon. Because the refugee population's low English skills may increase their dependence upon welfare assistance, their nonparticipation in ESL programs is treated as a social issue. Efforts to increase the English literacy levels of Russian-speaking Pentecostal refugees are limited by lack of empirical data regarding forces that affect this population's decision to participate or not to participate in educational activities. The purpose of this study was to gather information about barriers to participation in ESL programs by adult Russian-speaking Pentecostal refugees. To this end the present research sought to determine (1) the importance of individual reasons for nonparticipation; (2) whether there was an underlying structure to those reasons; and (3) whether socio-demographic variables were associated with reasons for nonparticipation. The survey was conducted on a representative sample of 143 Russian-speaking Pentecostal adults in the Portland, Oregon area. Data were obtained with the Deterrents to Participation Scale - Form LLR (adapted from Hayes & Darkenwald, 1988) which had two parts: socio-demographic information and 35 items which operationalized the concept "reasons for nonparticipation." Factor analysis of the 35 items resulted in six factors: School/Self Incongruence, Low Priority of Education, Negative Attitude Towards Classes, Low SelfConfidence, Situational Barriers, and Social Disapproval. The socio-demographic variables and factors were found to relate in logical ways. School/Self Incongruence correlated with age and number of dependent children; Low Priority of Education correlated with number of children and unemployment; Low Self-Confidence was shown to be related to age; Situational Barriers related to number of children, educational attainment and unemployment; and Social Disapproval correlated with period of attendance of ESL classes. With the data gathered from the research, implications for practice were drawn which can be used as the basis for developing programs to meet the ESL needs of the Russian-speaking Pentecostal adults.

Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate nurses’ experiences of communicating with patients with immigrant backgrounds regarding language barriers, patient relations and use of interpreter. Method: Eight persons participated in this study. Four registered midwives were interviewed in a focus group and one clinical lecturer with a district nursing background, one midwife and two district nurses were individually interviewed about their experiences. The content was analysed using a qualitative content analysis. Results: Four themes, seven categories and 15 subcategories revealed. The study shows that the interviewees felt ambivalence regarding given information and lack of time in their performance. A good meeting with the patient were determined for the performance. The chatting between the nurse and the patient created a good relationship. Negative aspects which had an effect on the relationship with the patient were when, for example, an interpreter or a significant other was involved. Discrimination was also brought up as a negative impact. If the patient had a limited vocabulary or there were no access to an interpreter the interviewees experienced communication problems. Authorized interpreter and significant other who acted as an interpreter were described in both positive and negative ways. Culture differences affected the work and how the patients adopted the information. Conclusion: When the patient does not have Swedish as a mother tongue, the chatting part of the conversation gets lost. Interpreters, significant others and the Internet are used to overcome language difficulties. Also cultural differences create challenges in these conversations. Our study indicates that more knowledge about these patient encounters is needed.

Språk har stor betydelse för kommunikation och när olika språk talas kan språkbarriärer uppstå. Språkbarriärer upplevs utmanande i vården eftersom det begränsar och försvårar kommunikation och kan därmed hindra god vård.  Syfte: Att belysa sjuksköterskors erfarenheter av att möta patienter som talar annat språk än sjuksköterskan.  Metod: Litteraturstudie baserad på åtta kvalitativa artiklar som söktes i databaserna Cinahl, PubMed och PsycInfo. Analys genomfördes med hjälp av Fribergs femstegsmodell.  Resultat: Sjuksköterskor beskriver olika utmaningar och strategier när de vårdar dessa patienter. Det presenteras i fem kategorier och elva subkategorier. Kategorierna är: Effekter av bristande kommunikation, Behov av kompetensutveckling, Krav på förändrad organisation, Använda tillgängliga resurser som stöd och Egna strategier för att överbrygga språkbarriärer.  Konklusion: Fungerande kommunikation är avgörande för att ge säker vård. Sjuksköterskor kan känna sig otillräckliga när de vårdar patienter som talar annat språk. Organisationen behöver därför utveckla tydliga riktlinjer och hjälpverktyg för att stötta sjuksköterskor att hantera språkbarriärer i vården.
Background: As a result of migration, people with different backgrounds and cultural affiliations meet and create a multicultural society where different languages are spoken. Language is important for communication and when different languages are spoken, language barriers may arise. Language barriers are perceived as challenging in healthcare because they limit and complicate communication and might therefore become an obstacle to good healthcare.  Aim: To highlight the experiences of nurses when meeting patients that speak another language than the nurse.   Methods: Literature study based on eight qualitative articles which was searched in the databases Cinhal, PubMed and PsycInfo. The analysis was conducted using Friberg’s five step model.  Results: Nurses describe different challenges and strategies when caring for these patients. This is presented in five categories and eleven subcategories. The categories are: Impacts of a deficient communication, Need for competence development, Requirements for changed organization, Using available resources to facilitate communication and Strategies for bridging language barriers.  Conclusion: A crucial factor in providing safe care is functioning communication. Nurses may feel inadequate when caring for patients who speak another language. Therefore, the organization needs to develop clear guidelines and tools to support nurses dealing with language barriers within nursing care.

This study aimed to determine the need for practical and academic training in Spanish for bilingual social work students. Using an exploratory method with a qualitative approach, the researcher interviewed bilingual MSW students who were providing counseling services in Spanish and who had not received any training in clinical Spanish. The study used purposive sampling to interview and evaluate participants’ perception of competence in providing services to Spanish speakers. Through data analysis, the researcher identified three themes: linguistic issues in clinical terminology, discomfort feelings, and language expectation. A limitation of this study included that the results could not be generalized to the larger population due to the small sample size. Recommendations included support from bilingual field instructors to process cases in Spanish and to strongly recommend students to participate in the Certificate Program in Healthcare at CSUSB to assist students who wish to continue working with Spanish speaking clients.

In recent years South Africa has seen a significant growth in the number of migrants entering its borders. The country has opened its doors to not only migrants from the African continent, but also to immigrants from the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the Indian subcontinent. The increasing number of Chinese businesses in South Africa means that South Africans are now coming into fairly regular contact with Chinese people from mainland China. This study addresses the issue of intercultural communication between Chinese store keepers and South African customers and seeks to investigate the ways in which the two juxtaposed cultures communicate effectively despite linguistic and cultural barriers. As a study on intercultural communication, the theoretical framework for this is globalisation, with a particular focus on concepts like intercultural communication, politeness and face theory. The study adopts a qualitative research design with an ethnographic methodological approach to examine and describe the linguistic practices of Chinese and South Africans in the city of Cape Town when they interact in the business contexts. The study relies largely on interviews with Chinese business owners and their South African clients, as well as observation of the interaction between these two groups. The research population consists of 8 Chinese interviewees, random interviews with 4 customers and 4 shop assistants, and observation at stores in a local China Town (a collection of Chinese shops and businesses). For research purposes and for the sake of informed consent, a Chinese research assistant and translator assisted the principal researcher. The major tool for analysis is a content analysis of the transcribed interviews. From these transcribed interviews, I describe the strategies used for effective intercultural communication between the two groups, and aim to draw conclusions on how these strategies have enabled Chinese businesses to flourish in Cape Town.

The purpose of this study was to explore informed ways of teaching when confronted with the kind of common barriers in grade 10 visible both in and out of the classroom. This qualitative study describes the innovative methods that teachers use. The theoretical framework undergirding this study is effective teacher research. The research design involved interviews of twelve Grade 10 learners, focus group and observations of two teachers. In addition, two student teachers in their final year were also observed. The research captured teaching methods that are already known. However, the research in this thesis also added some new dimensions that many teachers might not know or might not be using in their classroom. These teaching methods revealed the extent to which effective teachers will go to make a difference for their learners. The teaching methods harnessed “the ability from the learner to recreate, imagine and empower their understanding of the world they live in” (CAPS). The findings of the study reveal that creative ways of teaching has the ability to bring about the essential improvement of learner achievement. This falls in line with the South African Education comprehensive programme, which is referred to as Action Plan 2014: Towards the Realization of Schooling 2025.

Med samhällsutveckling och ökande global migration sker en kontinuerlig förändring av förutsättningar för hälso- och sjukvården. Förändrade förutsättningar innebär att hög kompetens krävs av sjuksköterskan. Sjuksköterskan bör inneha kunskap till att identifiera hur kulturella faktorer kan inverka på upplevelser av och förväntningar på vård och behandling samt vara införstådd om hur deras sätt att kommunicera påverkar och uppfattas av patienter. Syfte: Syftet var att belysa mötet mellan omvårdnadspersonal och patient vid kommunikationsbarriärer ur ett transkulturellt perspektiv. Metod/Design: En allmän litteraturöversikt. Resultat/Slutsats: Kommunikationsbarriärer inom omvårdnad består främst av lingvistiska och kulturella hinder. Kulturmedvetenhet och kulturkompetens hos sjuksköterskan ökade förutsättningarna att möta kommunikationshinder. Tolkanvändning presenterades som ett positivt och negativt hjälpmedel att tillgå vid språkbarriärer men visades vara komplext i många avseenden. Med personcentrerad vård kan sjuksköterskan övervinna kommunikationshinder då det främjar patientens individualitet och delaktighet. Förslag på fortsatt forskning: Ytterligare forskning behövs inom området för att stärka kulturkompetensen hos sjuksköterskor samt för att kunna implementera det i klinisk praxis.
Background: Communication is fundamental for the approach of nursing to work properly. If communication fails and causes an incorrect transfer of information, not only is patient safety at risk but also that wrong care is given due to misinterpretations. With the development of society and increasing global migration, there is a continuous change in the conditions for health care. Changed conditions mean that high skills are required of the nurse. The nurse should possess knowledge to identify how cultural factors can affect the experiences and expectations of care and treatment as well as be aware of how their way of communicating is influenced and perceived by patients. Aim: The aim was to illuminate the encountering between healthcare professionals and patients in communication barriers from a transcultural perspective. Method/Design: A general literature review. Results/Conclusion: Communication barriers in nursing consists mainly of linguistic- and cultural barriers. Cultural awareness and cultural competence of the nurse increased the conditions for addressing the communication barriers. The use of an interpreter was presented as a positive and a negative resource when language barriers appeared, since it was found to be complex to use out of many aspects. With person-centered care, the nurse can overcome communication barriers as it promotes the individuality and participation of the patient.

A Geographic Information System visually communicates both spatial and temporal analyses and has been available for at least twenty years in New Zealand. Using a Kaupapa Māori Research framework, this research investigates the benefits and barriers for Māori if they were to adopt GIS to assist their development outcomes. Internationally, indigenous peoples who have adopted GIS have reported they have derived significant cultural development benefits, including the preservation and continuity of traditional knowledge and culture. As Māori development continues to expand in an increasing array of corporate, scientific, management and cultural arenas, the level of intensity required to keep abreast of developments has also expanded. GIS has been used by some roopū to assist their contemporary Māori development opportunities; has been suggested as a cost effective method for spatial research for Waitangi Tribunal claims; has supported and facilitated complex textual and oral evidence, and has also been used to assist negotiation and empowerment at both central and local government level. While many successful uses are attributed to GIS projects, there are also precautionary calls made from practitioners regarding the obstacles they have encountered. Overall, whilst traditional knowledge and contemporary technology has been beneficially fused together, in some instances hidden or unforeseen consequences have impeded or imperilled seamless uptake of this new technology. Challenges to the establishment of a GIS range from the theoretical (mapping cultural heritage) to the practical (access to data) to the pragmatic (costs and resources). The multiple issues inherent in mapping cultural heritage, indigenous cartography and, in particular, the current lack of intellectual property rights protection measures, are also potential barriers to successful, long-term integration of GIS into the tribal development matrix. The key impediments to GIS establishment identified by surveyed roopū were lack of information and human resources, and prioritisation over more critical factors affecting tangata whenua. Respondents also indicated they would utilise GIS if the infrastructure was in place and the cost of establishment decreased. Given the large amount of resources to be invested into GIS, and the opportunity to establish safe practices to ensure continuity of the GIS, it is prudent to make informed decisions prior to investment. As an applied piece of Kaupapa Māori research, a tangible outcome in the form of an establishment Guide is presented. Written in a deliberately novice-friendly manner, the Guide traverses fundamental issues surrounding the establishment of a GIS including investment costs and establishment processes.

Abstract:
Majority of English as second language (ESL) students attending primary and secondary schools in the United States are not considered college ready despite mandated educational strategies aimed at improving language acquisition and academic performance. ESL students are more likely to drop out within the first 2 years of college than their English-speaking peers. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore educators' perspectives regarding high postsecondary attrition rates of ESL students in Middle Tennessee. Tinto's retention theory provided the framework for the study. Data collection included semistructured interviews with 6 Middle Tennessee public high school teachers and 6 Middle Tennessee college professors from 2- and 4-year public colleges. Interview data were coded and analyzed using the thematic analysis method. Findings revealed 4 major themes: language acquisition, barriers to college graduation, adverse circumstances, and academic achievement. Participants reported a desire for alignment between primary, secondary, and postsecondary education. Findings were used to develop a professional development training curriculum for secondary and postsecondary educators. The project included effective strategies to use in the classroom to increase ESL students' college readiness and college graduation rates. If implemented correctly, this project will positively impact ESL students' language acquisition and academic achievement, but it will also develop a significant professional partnership between K-12 public schools and colleges.

This thesis attempts to discover what actions are necessary to mitigate these problems within textile companies. Theories on organisational culture, organisational learning, and international management, were addressed in relation to intercultural communication. Using an exemplifying case of one single person within Eton AB, a case study research design was conducted. The data was collected through a qualitative research strategy and method, using self-completion/self-administrative questionnaires, and analysed using grounded theory. The general result of the thesis indicates that few communication errors between Eton AB and the participant exist. Therefore this interrelation can be seen as a positive example of intercultural communication within a textile company. In this context, it was the authors’ intention to identify the influence organisational culture and organisational learning have on intercultural communication. Certain aspects within an organisational culture are of importance to create a better integration of employees, hence influence intercultural relations positively. Organisational learning, likewise, has a positive impact, since it contributes to the creation of a better environment for integration. This thesis concludes with generalised measures which can be seen as a guideline and as first steps for textile companies in order to reduce intercultural communication errors.

This thesis contributes original knowledge through an inclusive design approach to lowering language and communication barriers in healthcare and suggests shifting the discussion from culture to context to lower intra-cultural hindrances towards learning English amongst some ethnic minorities. It offers an adaptable, scalable concept for gathering data on ethnic minorities (considering both different generations and religions) and employs a framework based analysis in design. Over the course of three studies grounded on theoretical insights from literature, primary research lead to the development and testing of innovative aids for communication, including educative and motivational elements. This research began by seeking to understand ethnic minority consumers (EMCs) perceptions of any barriers hindering their take-up of products or services in the UK, and their preferences. This is particularly significant as the UK s EMC population is predicted to double by 2051 and to diversify further, presenting challenges for social cohesion and planning future community goals. EMCs also represent a significant market for service and product providers. The research focussed on EMCs from the Indian Subcontinent based on religions and generations. It highlighted that first generation females lacking English and/or literacy (across religions and age groups) faced problems with services and issues around empowerment . The importance of improved access to healthcare was a strong theme. On investigating NHS staffs perceptions, five barriers were identified (Language barriers; Low-literacy; a Lack of understanding; Attitudes, gender and health beliefs; and Information retention) and that a female subgroup was particularly affected. This study sets out staffs perceptions of the aids currently employed and suggestions of what would help. It identified a (currently) low use of visual communication aids in adult-patient care and that pharmacist-patient communication in pharmacies was low. Ideally, staff would like patients to learn English and to use more low-cost visual communication aids. These findings lead to the development of innovative visual communication aids through inclusive and user-centred approaches and participatory design and brainstorming methods. This enabled the development of aids by considering the needs of NHS staff, EMCs lacking English and/or literacy and indigenous elderly people to promote better patient-staff communication including a take-away educational element for learning English at home.
