Abstract:
Le théâtre acadien contemporain est né de façon fulgurante avec une mise en scène à la fois tragique et comique de la pauvreté et de la marginalité sociale. Pour la première fois en Acadie, Antonine Maillet, dans Les Crasseux et La Sagouine : Pièce pour une femme seule, donnait, dans leur langage propre, la parole aux miséreux, aux exclus, aux parias de la société. Cette représentation de la pauvreté et de la marginalité comme étant à la fois tragique et comique s’est poursuivie dans le théâtre acadien. On la retrouve dans la pièce Le Djibou de Laval Goupil, par exemple, créée en 1975 et réécrite pour une nouvelle représentation en 1997 sous le titre de Le Djibou ou l’Ange déserteur. Dans les années 2000, Herménégilde Chiasson et Marcel-Romain Thériault reprendront ce thème de la pauvreté et de la marginalité en Acadie, Chiasson le fait de façon directe et comique dans Laurie ou la vie de galerie (2002), puis de façon tragique dans Le Christ est apparu au Gun Club (2005) ; Thériault, pour sa part, n’accorde la parole à ceux-ci que de façon indirecte et tragique dans Le filet : Une tragédie maritime (2009).

Abstract:
In Waropen livelihood, women in connected maritime tradition play roles in providing food for their family In related to the title, there are some problems deal with the women’s roles in Waropen maritime tradition that can be formulated as follows: How are the roles of women in Waropen maritime tradition, what values revealed in maritime tradition. The research applies etnoarcheolgical approach by using some techniques: bibliographical study, observation, and interview. Those collected data are then described, analyzed, interpreted, and concluded. The results show that there are three main livelihood, i.e., processing sagoo, cathing fish (by men), cathing crabs (by men), and gathering seashells (by men). While women’s roles follow the knowledge system of maritime tradition: time, season, wind, and stars. To go to the location of sagoo processing, shrimps and seashells gathering, Waropen women use canoes without leeboard. In local language it is called sewado. Through the roles of Waropen women in maritime tradition, there are some beneficial socio-cultural values, i.e. being religious, corporation, independence, discipline, hard work, creativity, and care to nature. ABSTRAKPeran serta perempuan Waropen dalam sistem mata pencaharian hidup berkaitan dengan tradisi maritim, perempuan bertanggung jawab penuh untuk menyiapkan makanan bagi keluarganya. Berkaitan dengan judul, ada beberapa permasalahan yang muncul berkaitan dengan peran perempuan dalam budaya maritim Waropen, yang dapat dirumuskan sebagai berikut: Bagaimana peran perempuan dalam budaya maritim di Waropen?, nilai-nilai apa saja yang terkandung dalam budaya maritim tersebut?. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan etnoarkeologi dengan menggunakan beberapa teknik yaitu: studi pustaka, observasi, wawancara. Setelah semua data yang dibutuhkan terkumpul kemudian dideskripsikan, dianalisis dan diinterpretasikan, dan ditarik suatu kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan ada tiga macam mata pencaharian utamanya yaitu meramu sagu, menangkap ikan (dilakukan oleh lakilaki), menangkap kepiting dan mengumpulkan atau kerang, berburu (dilakukan oleh perempuan). Sementara itu, perempuan Waropen mengikuti sistem pengetahuan budaya maritim seperti sistem pengetahuan mengenai waktu, musim, angin dan bintang. Untuk ke lokasi tempat mencari seperti menokok sagu, mencari keping, udang dan bia, perempuan Waropen menggunakan perahu tak bercadik yang disebut dengan sewado. Melalui peran perempuan Waropen dalam budaya maritim, termuat nilai-nilai sosial-budaya yang berguna dalam kehidupan, yaitu nilai religius, gotong royong atau kerjasama, kemandirian, disiplin, kerja keras, kreatif, dan peduli lingkungan.

Abstract:
In this research, the term “maritime” describes issues related to the relationships and activities between humans and the sea. A country with a major maritime region, like Indonesia, can also be referred to as maritime. This serves as an idea of a starting point for a nation seeking for ways to improve its marine education. However, students find it difficult to understand the material due to the use of foreign language that they don’t understand. In order to increase student knowledge and interest, the researcher offers the use of mother tongue. For this study, researcher conduct qualitative research. 25 students from University Maritim Raja Ali Haji (UMRAH) participate in responding the questionnaire. The data indicates that people strongly agree using their mother language is a good way to raise awareness in the maritime environment. Because, it can facilitate their understanding of the subject during the learning process. Besides, students’ motivation in studying maritime education is also greatly influenced by their mother tongue. When teachers utilize their mother tongue fluently and avoid complicating things, students have an easier time processing the material and their enthusiasm in studying about maritime will also rise.

Abstract:
This paper reports the students’ needs in developing a GME instructional course with the following research questions: 1) What is the present level of students’ oral communication apprehension? 2) What are the students’ needs (the learning and the language needs) in learning General Maritime English? The research was conducted at the Akademi Maritim Akademi Indonesia AIPI Makassar. There were 150 students of the nautical department in the academic year 2016-2017 as the primary subjects of this research. The researchers administered questionnaires, conducted interviews and observed exams to collect the data. The results found that the students’ level of oral communication apprehension was high, based on the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS). It was also found that there was a high demand for materials that could prepare the students to have good communication skills, in order to be equipped to work in international maritime industries. Most of the students assumed that the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) in English are crucial, but they placed productive skills (writing and speaking) as their highest priority. It is concluded that the results of this investigation should be taken into account in developing teaching and learning materials for maritime academy students.

Whether considered as a form of “diplomacy by cities,” as a strategy for small and mid-sized communities to assert their role amidst globalization, or as a means of territorial cooperation, twinnings between municipalities of different countries represent a common and oft celebrated facet of contemporary transnationalization. Sister cities in Louisiana and Canada’s Maritime Provinces play an important part in the transnational networks among populations of the Acadian diaspora, a people “scattered to the wind” in the eighteenth century after mass deportation by British authorities. There are currently 12 such twinnings, and partnerships with the French-speaking world figure prominently in external subnational relations across the Maritimes, especially in New Brunswick. This article examines emerging discourses of diasporic Acadian identity through municipal twinnings between Louisiana and l’Acadie des Maritimes. After a general profile of twinnings in the Maritimes, I analyze the evolution of language used in sister-city agreements before offering examples of sister cities’ unique contribution to a sense of diasporic belonging.

Abstract:
Maritime English is a specific register. Therefore, it requires a specific treatment. This paper implies the restricted aspect of a complex system such as English for specific purpose in the nautical education and profession. The sophisticated system of the maritime English makes it a plain instrument of communication. The opposite "tides" govern the system: creative and economical tendency. The creative side of the maritime language is evident in the forming of new words and meanings, combining of existing units, various metaphors, etc. We have tried to look into certain subregisters within Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP) by pointing to the main characteristics. Seaspeak is a vital instrument of communication on board a ship. The importance of English language has always been emphasized, especially the importance of the standardized maritime phrases used in vessel-to-vessel vessel-to-port communication. By trying to encode the Maritime English world, we will look into the structure of Maritime English communication terms and phrases. However, we cannot make artificial borders between Maritime and General English. These two registers intertwine and it is impossible to eliminate Maritime English from General English and vice versa. As far as restricted aspect of Maritime English is concerned, Standard Marine Communication Phrases are used in both ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore communication.

Abstract:
Oral communication is essential for people’s workplace performance as well as for university students learning English. Speaking fluently is also crucial for maritime academy students prepared to work in industries abroad. Students need to believe in their ability to speak English. For this reason, sound communication skills are necessary for maritime students so they can compete with seafarer or sailor from other countries. The purpose of this research was to identify the level of oral communication apprehension of nautical students of Akademi Maritim Indonesia (Indonesian Maritime Academy) AIPI Makassar. The sample consisted of 10 first year students at nautical of AMI AIPI Makassar. Data was gathered through questionnaires adapted from Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Class Scale (FLCAS). The findings indicated that students were generally apprehensive in EFL oral communication. The students showed the highest apprehension for public speaking. The level of nautical students’ apprehension based on observation and supported by the modified FLCAS were 20% in the low category, 60% in the moderate category, and 20% in the high category. Students in the high apprehension category showed more symptoms than students in the moderate and low apprehension categories.

English language is an integral part of a navigator’s life. And Maritime English language is one of the most important means of professional communication of seafarers because the vast majority of ships have multilingual international crews. In their work, the mariners have to communicate on various topics: professional, domestic or just to keep the conversation going in a multinational crew. Marine professionals need Maritime English at the user’s level and this fact is undisputable and undeniable. The level of English language proficiency depends on the success of the navigator, his career growth, ensuring the safety of navigation. Proficiency in Maritime English is stipulated in a separate line in convention documents (including the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers) governing the training of seafarers. The article is devoted to one of the topical problems of the foreign language cadets’ (students’) education of the maritime institutions of higher education, in particular navigators. The concepts of «competence» is briefly characterized. The author provides the definitions of «foreign language communicative competence» given by foreign and Ukrainian scientists. Also the author’s own definition is formulated. There have been presented the main conditions for mastering international communication competence, which is important for the safe and efficient operation of maritime transport, in the process of professional training of future navigators. The main types of speech activities (listening, monologue speech, dialogic speech, writing, reading), which are used for the formation of foreign language communicative competence of future navigators, are analysed. The examples of tasks used at the practical classes by the professional English language teachers of the f Navigation and Ship Handling Chair of Azov Maritime Institute of the National University «Odessa Maritime Academy» are provided in this article. Terpilihnya Presiden Joko Widodo pada pemilu 2014 yang mengusung poros maritim dunia dengan tol laut sebagai agenda utama, memunculkan sebuah paradigma baru bagi pemerintah Indonesia dalam memandang Jalur Sutera Maritim Abad 21 (<em>21<sup>st</sup> Maritime Silk Road</em>) yang dicanangkan oleh China sebagai sebuah tantangan atau potensi. Bagaimana kebijakan pemerintah kedua negara dalam meningkatkan hubungan <em>people-to people</em>, akan sangat berpengaruh dalam keberhasilan kerjasama ini. Makalah ini memaparkan perkembangan hubungan sosial budaya Indonesia-China melalui berbagai kegiatan di Pusat Bahasa Mandarin di Unversitas Al Azhar Indonesia. This was responded to by various parties, some of them regarded it as a positive thing, but some regard it as a threat. The election of President Joko Widodo in 2014, which brings the maritime axis of the world with the sea toll as the main agenda, has created a new paradigm for the Indonesian government in the view of the <em>21st Maritime Silk Road</em> by China as a challenge or potential. Connectivity in <em>Belt and Road Iniative</em> is consistent with 5 (five) main pillars proclaimed by President Joko Widodo in the world maritime axis program. In synergizing this, of course the <em>people-to-people</em> relationship that exists through social and cultural relationships becomes a very important pillar. How government policies of both countries in improving <em>people-to people</em> relationship, will be very influential in the success of this cooperation. This paper describes the development of socio-cultural relations between Indonesia and China through various activities at the Mandarin Language Center at Al Azhar University of Indonesia. The act of communicating using English is still an obstacle for students, especially for countries that make English as a foreign language. English conversation must be mastered fluently by students of Akademi Maritim Nusantara Cilacap, especially the Nautical Sciences Study Program. This becomes an obligation because as seafarers, graduates will definitely have to deal with many people from other countries. Learning English conversation by imitation is seen as still relevant when viewed from the position of English as a foreign language in Indonesia. This study aims to see the impact of applying repetition and chain drill methods in learning Maritime English at the Akademi Maritim Nusantara Cilacap. The Repetition and Chain Drill methods are part of a language teaching method called the Audio-Lingual Method. Both methods are implemented in one Nautical Science class which contains 33 students. With the help of 33 Nautical program students, the research was done utilizing the Classroom Action Research approach. Three study steps yielded the necessary data. Researchers assess each student’s fluency and pronunciation in various ways. The results showed that there was an increase in the average value between stages. It also proves that learning with repetition and chain drill methods helps students start English conversation.

Abstract:
One of the tools that can help teachers and students in a classroom’s teaching and learning program is media. Visual and audio are two kinds of media that can be used as tools to facilitate activities in class, especially in language teaching and learning. One of the most common media to be used worldwide is YouTube. Not only that it is an entertaining media source, but also YouTube can play a great deal in aiding students’ learning process. The aims of this study are describing how YouTube videos can be used to enhance the students’ speaking skill, and describing the process of utilizing YouTube videos in language teaching-learning activity. The subject of this study is the students of the third semester in the Marine Engineering Program at Akademi Maritim Nusantara. The classroom action research design is used as the method to conduct this study. Data collections are obtained by speaking interview and assessment. The result of the study which was conducted in two cycles showed that, the average score of speaking indicators of the students increased from 60.8 to 66.3 in Cycle One. In Cycle Two, the improvement was progressing to 76.4 on the average score of speaking indicators. From those results, the study concluded that there was an improvement in the students’ speaking skill. The students’ fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, context, and grammar can be seen as the improving aspects of the students’ speaking skill. In conclusion, the use of YouTube videos to improve students’ speaking skill is reviewed.

Will man von einem regelrechten ,,Schiffbruch-Narrativ“ sprechen, dann ist dieses nicht nur durch eine longue durée motivischer und struktureller Beständigkeit ausgezeichnet, sondern auch durch einen hohen Grad an sprachlich-formaler Selbstreflexivität und seit der Neuzeit durch die Engführung nautischer mit poetischen Innovationen. Wendepunkte markiert das Scheitern nunmehr in seefahrts- und auch literaturhistorischer Hinsicht, weshalb man, wie im Portugal der Entdeckerzeit, von einem maritimen ,,discurso“ sprechen kann.In the Western narrative tradition since Homer, relating to sea losses leads to cosmological and existential, political and economic concerns. The ,,shipwreck narrative“ is characterized by a long-lasting motivic and structural consistency. But furthermore, it exhibits a high degree of linguistic and formal self-reflexiveness, and since modern times, it brings together nautical with poetic innovations. The sinking now marks turning points in terms of maritime navigation as well as literary history, which is why, as in Portugal of the time of discovery, one can speak of a maritime ,,discurso“.

The aim of this paper is to point out at the real role of English for specific purposes and its importance for the development of modern society (where English for specific purposes is accepted as the international language) and that the essential characteristics of English of maritime profession - as simultaneously creative and limited professional language are clearly and accurately defined. Under the linguistic creativity is primarily implied the ability of any natural language to create from a limited resource of linguistic units an unlimited number of linguistic units at all levels- the phonetic, phonological, morphological, lexical, syntactic and semantic level. Thus, limitation of linguistic units accompanied by linguistic unlimited creativity allows linguistic functionality, respectively the ability of language to respond to all challenges of civilization, man and society. With its creativity language transcends all boundaries and is ready to respond to any new accomplishment, invention or appearance of the modern age.

Vocabulary of River Eco-Lexicon in Banjarese LanguageABSTRAKMasyarakat Banjar hidup sejak dahulu di sekitaran sungai. Hampir seluruh kegiatan masyarakat Banjar yang dilakukan di sungai tentu membentuk orientasi dan kebudayaan masyarakat maritim. Kebudayaan akan memengaruhi bahasa masyarakat tersebut. Dengan kajian ekolinguistik, bisa ditemukan bahwa erat kaitan antara bahasa dan lingkungan tempat tinggal manusia. Bahasa merupakan salah satu identitas masyarakat yang mencerminkan kebudayaan masyarakat itu sendiri. Namun, seiring berjalannya zaman, arus globalisasi sedikit demi sedikit mulai menggeser orientasi masyarakat sungai. Ini akan berdampak pada krisis jati diri dan berdampak pada pemertahanan bahasa daerah. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Data penelitian yang berupa leksikon kesungaian didadapatkan melalui penelitian lapangan dan kajian pustaka. Almost all the activities of the Banjar people which are carried out on the river certainly shape the orientation and culture of the maritime community. Culture will influence the language of the community. With ecolinguistic studies, it can be found that there is a close relationship between language and the environment in which humans live. Language is one of society's identities that reflects society's culture. However, as time goes by, the flow of globalization gradually begins to shift the orientation of the river community. This will have an impact on the crisis of identity and impact on the maintenance of local languages. This study used descriptive qualitative method. Research data in the form of a river lexicon were obtained through field research and literature review. The results found that people aged 40-60 years, know more river lexicon than people aged 20-40 years. Simbol dalam syair lagu tidak mudah dimengerti dan perlu penafsiran. Pencipta lagu menggunakan simbol verbal pada syair lagu guna mewakili segala hal terkait dengan maksud, harapan, perasaan serta kondisi yang terjadi di lingkungan fisik serta menerjemahkan kehidupan di dunia yang diketahuinya. Untuk memahami sistem tanda yang menggambarkan budaya kemaritiman dalam syair lagu digunakan pendekatan semiotik. Penelitian ini bersifat deskriptif kualitatif, mengkaji bahasa berupa tanda atau simbol dalam syair lagu kemaritiman. Teknik pengumpulan data dengan mendokumentasikan lagu di Museum Musik Indonesia (MMI) di Malang serta eksplorasi di internet. Data berupa aspek kebahasaan yang mengandung sistem tanda budaya kemaritiman dari 14 lagu. Tujuan penelitian mendeskripsikan bentuk penanda dan petanda budaya kemaritiman pada syair lagu dan aspek budaya kemaritiman masyarakat Indonesia. Hasil penelitian ditemukan penanda dan petanda yang menunjukkan budaya kemaritiman pada syair lagu kemaritiman serta empat aspek sistem budaya masyarakat maritim meliputi, sistem mata pencaharian hidup, sistem peralatan hidup dan teknologi, sistem pengetahuan, dan sistem keorganisasian sosial. Lagu-lagu kemaritiman Indonesia merepresentasikan budaya kemaritiman masyarakat pesisir melalui simbol tanda yang ada. Untuk itu, lagu merupakan rekaman budaya masyarakat di masanya. Song verse is a series and arrangement of beautiful words that are noted and performed. The song verse contains symbols of the message that the creator wants to convey to his listener. The symbols in the verse of the song are not easy to understand and need interpretation. The songwriter uses verbal symbols in the song's verse to represent everything related to the intentions, expectations, feelings and conditions that occur in the physical environment and translate life in the world he knows. To understand the sign system that describes maritime culture in song verse, a semiotic approach is used. This research is qualitative descriptive, studying the language in the form of signs or symbols in maritime song verse. Data collection techniques by documenting songs at the Indonesian Music Museum (MMI) in Malang as well as exploration on the internet. Data in the form of language aspects that contain a maritime cultural sign system of 14 songs. The purpose of the study describes the form of markers and signs of maritime culture in song verses and aspects of maritime culture of Indonesian society. The results of the study found markers and signs that show maritime culture in maritime song verses as well as four aspects of the maritime community cultural system including, livelihood system, living equipment system and technology, knowledge system, and social organization system. Indonesian maritime songs represent the maritime culture of coastal communities through the symbol of existing signs. For this reason, the song is a recording of the culture of the people of his time.

This article discussed the distribution of nasal vowels in the Acehnese language in the Maritime Dictionary of Aceh-Indonesia. The nasal vowels included were /ã/, /ĩ/, /ũ/, /ɛ/̃, /ɔ̃/, /ʌ/̃, and /ɯ̃/. The data source for this research was the Aceh-Indonesia Dictionary, published by the Aceh Provincial Language Center, Ministry of Education and Culture Research and Technology, in 2021. This study employed a phonological approach with the theory of distinctive features. The research detailed the distribution of nasal vowels, including their frequency of occurrence and syllable positions. To achieve high accuracy in terms of nasal vowel occurrence frequency and syllable positions, the data was processed using the Antconc software. The research findings showed that maritime domain nasal vowels in the Acehnese language consisted of noun (n) and verb (v) word classes. There were eight nasal vowels in the noun class and two nasal vowels in the verb class. Among all nasal vowels in the Acehnese language, the vowels /ɛ/, /ɔ̃/, and /ɯ̃/ were not found in the Maritime Dictionary of Aceh-Indonesia. The research results also demonstrated that some nasal vowels were formed due to reduplication and onomatopoeia. In terms of syllable position, Acehnese nasal vowels were only found in the middle and at the end of syllables. Nasal vowels in the initial syllable position of the Acehnese language could not form words related to maritime matters. Consequently, it could be concluded that nasal vowels were not productive in the maritime vocabulary of the Acehnese la-nguage.Artikel ini membahas distribusi vokal nasal bahasa Aceh dalam Kamus Kemaritiman Aceh-Indonesia. Vokal nasal dimaksud meliputi /ã/, /ĩ/, /ũ/, /ɛ/̃, /ɔ̃/, /ʌ/̃, dan /ɯ̃/. Sumber data penelitian ini adalah Kamus Aceh-Indonesia yang diterbitkan oleh Balai Bahasa Provinsi Aceh, Kemdikbudristek, tahun 2021. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan fonologi dengan teori fitur distingtif. Penelitian ini menjabarkan distribusi vokal nasal yang meliputi frekuensi kemunculan vokal nasal dan melihat posisi silabel. Untuk memperoleh hasil keakuratan yang tinggi terkait frekuensi kemunculan vokal nasal dan posisi silabel, data diolah dengan perangkat lunak Antconc. Hasil penelitian memperlihatkan bahwa vokal nasal bidang kemaritiman dalam bahasa Aceh terdiri atas kelas kata nomina (n) dan verba (v). Terdapat delapan vokal nasal pada kelas nomina dan dua vokal nasal pada kelas verba. Dari semua vokal nasal dalam bahasa Aceh, vokal /ɛ/, /ɔ̃/, dan /ɯ̃/ tidak ditemukan dalam Kamus Kemaritiman Aceh-Indonesia. Hasil penelitian ini juga memperlihatkan bahwa beberapa vokal nasal terbentuk akibat reduplikasi dan onomatope. Ditinjau dari posisi silabel, vokal nasal bahasa Aceh hanya berada di tengah silabel dan di akhir silabel. Vokal nasal pada posisi awal silabel bahasa Aceh tidak dapat membentuk kata yang berkaitan dengan kemaritiman. Dengan demikian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa vokal nasal tidak produktif dalam perbendaharaan kosakata bahasa Aceh bidang maritim.

It is crucial to develop maritime professionals’ command of English since English is used as a shared language (lingua franca) among maritime professionals coming from different language and cultural backgrounds. An interesting question about learning English as a lingua franca is which English accent second-language (L2) English speakers should aspire to. Drawing on previous research and the speaker’s own empirical work Dai and Roever (2019), in this talk I discuss how first-language (L1) and L2 English accents affect listeners’ comprehension, attitude and familiarity with the speakers’ speech. I conclude with implications for English language teaching and learning for maritime professionals who use English as a shared language in international maritime communication.

AbstractThe prevailing image of the Indian Ocean world of trade before the arrival of western Europeans and Ottomans in the region in the sixteenth century is one of a generally peaceful, conflict-free realm dominated by cosmopolitan traders who moved easily across boundaries of geography, ethnicity, language, and religion. This paper modifies this picture by examining the evidence for conflict and competition between pre-modern maritime polities in the western end of the Indian Ocean. In the fifth/eleventh and sixth/twelfth centuries maritime polities on the islands of Kish in the Persian Gulf and Dahlak in the Red Sea antagonized Aden's supremacy as the region's most frequented entrepot. The Institute of Water Transport named after G.Ya. Through qualitative analysis, findings reveal varying language proficiency levels among cadets, with a predominant need for technical terminology mastery and communicative competence. Additionally, cadets emphasize the importance of practical learning experiences, such as shipboard training, and the integration of cross-cultural competence training. The research highlights the alignment between language instruction practices and international standards, notably the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW) convention. Moreover, professionalism attributes, including safety awareness, ethical conduct, and leadership skills, are identified as integral components of maritime education. The relevance of this study is determined by the fact that the legislation emphasizes the special importance of knowing the English language in relation to safety at sea. Proficiency in the English language is one of the qualification characteristics of specialists in maritime professions and is a professionally important quality. The officer of the watch should be proficient in English, which is determined by international documents (the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, 1978). The national curricula of higher education institutions of the maritime profile include the discipline “Maritime English”. The discipline in the maritime specialist university course, regardless of its formal name in the curricula, is Maritime English. It is all those means of the English language that if used as a communication tool of the international maritime community, ensure the safety of navigation and contribute to the comprehensive development of the maritime industry. An analysis of the standard of higher education in the specialty 271 Maritime and Inland Water Transport was conducted, which showed that the necessary skill is the readiness to communicate in oral and written forms in a foreign language to solve the tasks of professional activity and mastery of the English language in the amount necessary to fulfill one’s professional duties. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to study the main aspects of the formation of readiness for intercultural communication in English among future shipmasters at universities. Active methods of intercultural education are proposed for the formation of readiness for foreign language communication to solve the tasks of professional activity. It was concluded that these forms of training are necessary to increase the level of communication skills of future shipmasters.

This paper is based in part on an earlier publication on SMCP development, but includes new chapters on sociolinguistic and cultural issues arising during pilot’s taking the vessel into/out of harbour with tug assistance. In this case the multinational, multilingual and multicultural bridge team is further extended onto pilot's communicating with the tug master(s). A request has been made by the IFSMA2 to provide shipmasters with a set of phrases for pilots and tug masters in their working language - English - to be used during manoeuvring, since the existing Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP) have not been considered elaborate enough for the operation. Maritime English lecturers twinned with maritime professionals have provided a set of appropriate phrases and exercises to help students/ trainees adopt them, as the conclusion of the 2014 seminar organized by G.A.M.E. - Gesellschaft für Ausbildung in Maritimem Englisch (German Association for Maritime English) with the seat at Bremen University of Applied Sciences, Nautical Department, in order to meet the requirements from the maritime industry. A sociolinguistic and cultural issue has arisen as a result of the IFSMA’s invitation to G.A.M.E for a further development of the SMCP Pilotage and Tug Assistance Phrases and for presentation of the newly developed phrases for assessment to the IMO as a most influential safety factor. It would be a great benefit for shipmasters worldwide who regularly find themselves in situations when they cannot follow the pilot’s communication with the tug master(s) because it is carried out in a local language and the pilot, due to being involved in communication with several external parties, is often not in the position to translate the communication for the ship’s master due to the shortage of time. This intention of the IFSMA has met an overt disagreement by the pilot representatives taking part in the activities of the 2014 G.A.M.E. seminar and previously by the EMPA as their association. Therefore, following the approach starting from Roger's Diffusion of innovations theory (1960), revised later byClarke (1999) and Orr (2003), is proposed here to present the stages through which a technological innovation, this extension of SMCP being rightfully considered one, passes on its way to successful adoption.

This paper aims at pointing out the necessity of raising the levels of both communicative competence and Maritime English knowledge of seafarers, as well as of introducing a common language testing system into maritime education and training. It provides insight into the process of implementation of improvements in a different, but related practice of Aviation English and the relative regulations. Also, the paper presents the accounts of one aircraft accident, and two ship accidents due to the participants’ misunderstanding, or deficiency in English. This is followed by the results of an investigation into the reports published by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) about the sea accidents due to inadequate English language competence, or inadequate professional communication. Although there are commonly more than one cause which combine in each accident, these are usually fuelled by inadequate language competence. It is of utmost importance, especially in emergencies, that all the participants in the maritime venture are adequately competent in Maritime English to handle the emergencies to the benefit of all the persons involved. Therefore, the compulsory introduction of a uniform global language certification is suggested.

An interesting and fruitful area of research in maritime language is represented by metaphors and metaphorical expressions which abound in the language of seafarers. This paper sets to highlight that several maritime terms are the result of understanding and naming based on the metaphorical scenarios. Also, the aesthetic value of several maritime terms increases motivation and helps maritime language users to deal with them. The idea should be pointed out that the cognitive theories of metaphor have put forward the thesis according to which metaphors are not only a cultural symbol or ornamentation within a given discourse, but also a phenomenon that takes place to categorize and understand the experience.

This paper reports on the compilation of a multi-genre maritime domain-specific corpus and the research methods used to analyze it. The corpus was compiled using a combination of manual and automated methods, including web crawling and manual selection of relevant texts. Qualitative and quantitative methods, such as discourse analysis and statistical analysis, were employed to analyze the corpus. The research method used is a Systematic Literature Review. The articles used in this research are journal articles determined based on criteria from 2013-2023. Articles were obtained from the Google Scholar search page. Based on the literature review, it was found that reading skill is fundamental to improving learners’ maritime literacy. Mastery of specialized vocabulary is of particular concern in maritime-based reading instruction. In reading instruction, instructors should combine theoretical and practical approaches to help develop effective reading skills for maritime literacy.

The article suggests the definition of the continuous maritime education phenomenon and substantiates the basic didactic principles of the framework of foreign professionally-oriented language training of seafarers in the system of continuous education. It is determined that the leveled continuous professional training should be carried out in educational and industrial complexes which are in fact the system of interconnected educational establishments and industrial enterprises that pursue a common aim. It has been proved that the system of professionally-oriented foreign language competency formation of future seafarers can gain the qualities of integrity and continuality only under the condition that it is carried out on all basic stages of education in constant coordination: pre-professional training (Professional Maritime Lyceum), professional training (Maritime Specialized College and/or Maritime Academy), higher professional education (Maritime Academy) and post-graduate education (advanced training on the basis of training centers for seafarers). The process of integral professionally-oriented foreign language training of seafarers design must be grounded on the principles of succession and consistency, the provision of strict coordination of the educational process on all levels of education. Textual standardization is the expected route for documents in specific disciplinary fields, particularly for legal documents (Gotti 2012). Yet organizations in these fields need common conventions that allow for innovation and flexibility as they face complex professional contexts (Bhatia 2012). Our qualitative data concerning the maritime shipping industry’s use of the legal instruments known as “Cooperative Working Agreements” give evidence that variability allows communities to attain latent professional goals. Genre in language for special purposes, even in legal language, should be seen a double-edged sword, allowing professional communities to legitimately accomplish goals through both standardization and variability.

The findings of this study have made significant contributions to the improvement of language training programmes, communication protocols, and overall safety and efficiency in maritime internship settings. The empirical evidence indicates that possessing a strong command of English is essential for successfully carrying out safety drills, ensuring smooth vessel navigation and engine maintenance, fostering intercultural comprehension and efficient collaboration, and overseeing documentation procedures in port operations. The study places significant emphasis on the necessity of efficient language instruction, the resolution of language-related obstacles, and the facilitation of intercultural dialogue in order to adequately equip maritime academies and internship programs for fruitful internships and prospective careers as skilled and capable seafarers.

Melalui bukti linguistik, misalnya, trans-migrasi oleh kelompok berbahasa Austronesia dan kelompok berbahasa Papua atau bukti arkeologi seperti perluasan dan pengembangan tembikar yang memiliki kemiripan membuat tradisi ini menjadi bukti sejarah adanya perdagangan rempah-rempah dengan China, India dan lebih jauh ke arah Barat lainnya dalam studi kasus di Maluku. Kedatangan budaya logam (baik perunggu maupun besi) dan bahan kaca dinilai penting karena mungkin menunjukkan pengembangan lebih lanjut jaringan migrasi dan perdagangan manusia yang aktif di wilayah ini. Dengan berpijak pada pemahaman tersebut, tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan bukti-bukti kedatangan budaya logam di Maluku Utara sebagai indikasi jaringan migrasi dan perdagangan masa lalu. Ekskavasi sebagai pendekatan penelitian dilakukan pada situs baru di Maluku Utara antara tahun 2012-2014. Hasil penelitian menemukan bahwa Situs terbuka Gorua di pesisir timur laut Pulau Halmahera (Kabupaten Tobelo) merupakan salah satu dari situs-situs tersebut yang berumur sekitar 2300-2000 tahun BP (atau 300-50 SM). Sekaligus menjadi penanda perkembangan pembuatan tembikar dan pola jaringan maritim di Kawasan Maluku Utara pada masa Paleometalik/Perundagian. Abstract. During the post Neolithic times or Early Metal Age, after 2300 to 2000 years BP, in Wallacea human migrations and maritime networks were more developed. Through linguistic evidence, for instance the trans-migration by Austronesian language speaking groups and Papuan language speaking groups, or archaeological evidences such as expansion and development of similar pottery, make the traditions a historical evidence for the spice trade with China, India, and further West for the Maluku case. The arrival of metal (both bronze and iron) and glass materials is also considered important due to the fact that it possibly shows further development of active human migrations and trade networks in that region. On the basis of such backgrounds and understanding, the aim of this research is to uncover evidences of the arrival of metal culture in Northern Maluku as an indication of migration and trade networks in the past. Excavations as research approach were carried out at some new sites in Northern Maluku during 2012-2014. Results show that an open site, Gorua, on the eastern coast of Halmahera Island (Tobelo Regency) is one of the sites, which dates to around 2300-2000 years BP (or 300-50 BC). It also marks the development of pottery-making and the pattern of maritime network within the Northern Maluku Islands during the Early Metal Age.

This article underlines the great impact of navigation on the Dutch language. It contains a large number of Dutch maritime expressions and other terms derived from navigation and used in everyday language. The main aim of this article is to propose two different divisions of Dutch maritime idioms, which may clarify their figurative meaning. Furthermore, the author compares Dutch maritime metaphors to Polish examples, and eventually makes an attempt to answer the question whether Dutch maritime expressions were borrowed by Polish. There are many different Dutch loanwords (technical terminology) in Polish connected to navigation (eg. ship equipment elements).

Maritime world and industry across the globe employ people from different countries which have a multicultural background. English as the most common second language in the world is really used and important as a language to communicate in the ship. So, English language proficiencies and skills are a must. In order to have common general standards in language (English) for maritime there must be regulation regarding the standardization itself. The requirements for communicative competence of seafarers in STCW present a great challenge to Indonesian seafarers who will struggle to improve their linguistic competences, since in Indonesia English is still known as a foreign language. The research taken place at Merchant Marine Polytechnic of Sulawesi Utara with population of the sample is cadets in Ship Engineering study program. The research aims to evaluate the current Maritime English course curriculum in Indonesian shipping or maritime vocational colleges-universities by analysing communication skills required by seafarers on fishing vessels. Data was gathered from documents and interviews with industry participants. The results indicate that the current exam is inadequate in preparing students for global seafarer standards. The study suggests a genrebased approach for English language courses, including Maritime English (ESP), to enhance cross-cultural knowledge and improve work skills. This approach can help university graduates gain a competitive edge in the labor market by improving communication and work performance.

Maritime English is a “scourge” for maritime science students at universities engaged in maritime science. English is a foreign language in Indonesia may cause the students cannot understand Maritime English well. A phenomenon occurs that Maritime English teachers do not have basic knowledge about the maritime sciences. This has an impact on the teaching and learning process of Maritime English. This study seeks to reveal whether Maritime English is English teaching intended for maritime science or Maritime English is actually maritime science materials taught using English. The researcher uses a qualitative descriptive method by using a learning module adopted from the IMO Model Course 3.17 to conduct research. The results of the study found that the teachers never obtained many materials related to the maritime world. However, there are also materials that these teachers obtained during their undergraduate and master’s degree courses, such as grammar, reading comprehension, and listening comprehension. This means that Maritime English is indeed English intended for maritime science students (English for Special Purposes) and maritime sciences delivered using English.

Maritime affairs imply multinational/-cultural/-lingual work environments, and maritime students’ relative attitude should be investigated and the awareness raised. A research was undertaken with the 1st-year students of the Faculty of Maritime Studies (FMS) in Split, aiming at getting to know their cultural profile and their views of otherness. This is an essential starting point for the education of tolerant and knowledgeable seafarers, able to foresee possible problems arising in intercultural contacts, e.g. of a ship´s crew, and to deal with them if they should arise. Even before the introduction of multicultural elements into the university education of seafarers, some shipping companies had recognized the problem in an early stage and started undertaking individual initiatives to build respect and tolerance among crewmembers on board their ships originating from different national and cultural backgrounds. Since new nationalities are constantly entering the shipping industry scene, maritime students should be taught to: firstly, recognize the otherness and respect the different shapes it takes, and secondly, recognize the importance of the English language, not only as the occupational language in shipping and means of their professional communication, but also as their social life mediator in their working and living environment. A possible approach to this topic is proposed by an instructor of English for specific purposes in the maritime domain. It is through language that various attitudes presented by different nationalities in a variety of settings can best be illustrated.

The article is dedicated to the study of the dynamic features of the prosodic organization of English maritime commands used in two types of discourse: authentic shipping discourse and feature film discourse. The research material included audio and video recordings of 120 maritime commands with a total duration of 72 minutes. Audio and video recordings of 60 implementations of English maritime commands were used to investigate commands in the authentic shipping discourse, while video and soundtracks from 10 English-language films containing 60 commands were used to investigate maritime commands spoken by the characters in English-language feature films. The work uses two types of analysis, namely: perceptual analysis of speech segments and instrumental analysis using the PRAAT 6.1.05 software package. The results of a comparative analysis of the prosodic features of authentic maritime commands with maritime commands extracted from British and American films indicate that they differ significantly in a number of dynamic parameters, including different loudness and intensity range; localization of intensity maxima within the syntagm; the coincidence of the maxima of the fundamental frequency and the intensity within the syntagm. A common feature of maritime commands in the two studied types of discourse is the most frequent use of high and volume moderate during their utterance. The study proves that maritime commands in English-language films are characterized by a wider intensity range compared to authentic maritime commands; the maximum of intensity in the syntagm is most frequently localized on the nuclear syllable, and the percentage of the localization on the scale is the lowest; the highest coincidence of the maximum of the fundamental frequency and the intensity also falls on the nuclear syllable of the syntagm.
