Full textThe research explores the issues related to the textual tradition of the “Lancelot propre”, the longest and central section of the “Prose Lancelot” or “Lancelot-Grail” cycle. The approach is based on two different critical perspectives. The first perspective relates to the general studies on the prose Arthurian romances, which in the last decades focused on the specific phenomena connected with the genre in their composition and transmission. Between them, the research underlines the cyclification and vulgarization, the latter particularly important in the Italian area. The second perspective is linked more specifically with the vast “Lancelot propre” tradition, consisting in around 90 manuscripts and already studied by Alexander Micha and Elspeth Kennedy. The research is a wide assessment of their results, trying to systematize the data about the various witnesses’ relationships. The problem of how to perform a new analysis is consequently posed, in order to use the previous studies’ contribution and advance toward a better understanding of the textual tradition. In order to do so, the research focuses on a specific section of the text, i.e. the “False Guinevere” episode. Its importance is already known since Sommer’s edition, who noted for the first time that the episode is transmitted in various forms according to the different manuscripts. Since Lot and Micha’s assessments, two versions, a “long” and a “short” one, has been identified, but until now it is not clear which one is the original (or even previous) one. The research verifies the existence of this division, which seems not to be confirmed. The analysis is driven by a study of the narrative characteristics of the episode, which underlines how some manuscripts from the “long” and the “short” versions in Micha’s assessment contain the same text. According to this situation, the very same use of the term “version” appears improper. New perspectives arise from these conclusions, which can be useful for a new understanding of the manuscript transmission of the “Lancelot propre”.
