Abstract:
We have used soybean oil lampblack as a low-cost counter electrode (CE) material to replace expensive platinum in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). The lampblack was prepared by obstructing the flame of the soybean oil lamp with a porcelain bowl and characterized with the techniques of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy for structural analysis and scanning electron microscopy for surface morphology. The XRD of the lampblack indicated the presence of graphitic carbon in the lampblack while Raman spectroscopy of the carbonaceous material disclosed that the lampblack consists of both disordered and ordered forms of carbon. The lampblack was used with printer toner to prepare counter electrodes (CEs) of DSCs. The scanning electron microscopy of the film of the lampblack with toner showed that the toner serves as a binder to hold the particles of the lampblack on the CEs. The catalytic ability of the CEs was evaluated with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The charge transfer resistance Rct at the toner-electrolyte interface determined by EIS was extremely high (5.32 x 105 Ωcm2 ). Similarly, Rct at the carbon-electrolyte interface and platinum-electrolyte interface were 13.46 Ωcm2 and 2.29 Ωcm2 , respectively. The DSCs based on soybean oil lampblack achieved the light to electric energy conversion efficiency (η) of 2.58% and the platinum based solar cell achieved η of 3.67%.

Abstract:
Lampblack of soybean oil was investigated as a potential low-cost material to make electrodes of supercapacitors. The lampblack carbon was characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS). The electrochemical performance of the lampblack carbon electrode was tested using a three-electrode system, where a platinum wire was used as a counter electrode, a carbon electrode as a working electrode, and Ag/AgCl electrode as a reference electrode. The experiments, Galvanostatic Charge-Discharge (GCD) and Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) were performed in 3M aq. KOH. The specific capacitance of the lampblack carbon electrode from GCD was found to be 49.27 F g-1 at 1 A g-1. The lampblack carbon electrode showed good capacitive behavior at both low and high scan rates. The results indicated that lampblack carbon of soybean oil can be a new efficient alternative material for low-cost high-performance supercapacitors.

Abstract:
Abstract: Domestic refrigerators are usually used for cooling the bounded space by absorbing the heat through the evaporator and simultaneously rejecting the heat to the surrounding through the condenser coil. The black color coated condenser coil is the main part that rejects heat to the surrounding in the form of radiations. Herein, to increase rejection of the heat from the condenser coil, to increase its performance, a blend of lampblack/ synthetic black (various w/w ratio) was partially painted on. The three different compositions (w/w) are applied on the condenser coil and accordingly, the heat radiating coefficient and coefficient of performance are measured. Optimized composition of lampblack /synthetic black (4:6) provided maximum performance in terms of coefficient of performance 5.51% and with heat transfer coefficient 16.11%. The results show a costeffective approaches to increase the performance as well as the life time.

Abstract:
AbstractA field emission scanning electron microscopy analysis was carried out to determine the origin of the oriental printing inks used inThe Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, which are a national treasure of the Republic of Korea and listed in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register. The average diameters of the carbon black found in the printing inks of all the samples were in the range of 30–500 nm. The carbon black diameters of the printing inks in J-Se 68, J-Se 124, and T-Gwang 37 were 80–130 nm, whereas those of the printing inks in J-Seong 1, T-In 46, and T-Heon 4 were larger than 150 nm. It could be concluded that the printing inks in J-Se 68, J-Se 124, and T-Gwang 37 are lampblack ink, and those in J-Seong 1, T-In 46, and T-Heon 4 are charcoal ink. Furthermore, the results of infrared (IR) and principal component analysis (PCA) of printing inks suggest that there was no difference in the binding medium used in the manufacturing process of the charcoal ink stick and the lampblack ink stick.

Abstract:
A kitchen is an important part of a residence, and air quality in kitchens is a major factor affecting residents’ health and performance. Its influence is especially more evident in kitchens with typical Chinese cooking. Thus, it is important to understand distribution characteristics of oil fume particles in Chinese kitchens, and research on typical Chinese kitchen environments and movement characteristics of soot particles should be emphasized. Therefore, to understand the air pollution in kitchen environments, a full-scale experimental platform was built based on common Chinese-style residential kitchens to monitor the soot particles, explore the space–time distribution characteristics of the soot particles, and analyze the variation characteristics and distribution laws of number concentration (NC) and mass concentration (MC). The results indicated that NC0.3μm value fluctuated slightly during the whole cooking process, while NC0.3μm~0.5μm and NC0.5μm~1.0μm fluctuated sharply. During the peak period, NC0.3μm~0.5μm and NC0.5μm~1.0μm were significantly higher than those at the beginning and end of cooking (p < 0.05), and there was no significant difference between values of NC0.3μm~0.5μm and NC0.5μm~1.0μm at the beginning and end of cooking (p > 0.05 for both). NC0.3μm and NC0.3μm~0.5μm were significantly different between each position (p < 0.05 for all). There were also significant differences in NC0.3μm between pure meat dishes, pure vegetable dishes, and mixed dishes (p < 0.001). The proportion of cooking meat will significantly affect the composition and concentration of lampblack particles. Type of dishes is an important influencing factor for the emission rates of particulate pollutants. Small-sized lampblack particles were more likely to diffuse to the surroundings and affected the air quality of the whole room. Particulate matter in the kitchen space during the frying process is more harmful to the health of personnel.

Abstract:
Experiments involving either sublimation or evaporation at the base surface of a cylindrical cavity were performed respectively using naphthalene and water as the transferred vapor. The cavity was mounted in the lower wall of a flat rectangular duct through which turbulent air was passed. Supplementary experiments were also carried out using a cavity with a constricted opening (i.e., a Helmholtz resonator). The base surface mass transfer did not decrease monotonically with increasing cavity depth. Rather, there were two local maxima, respectively at about 0.06D and 0.5D (D = cavity diameter). Of these, the first is due to the reattachment of the shear layer on the cavity base. For the second, both fluid-elastic and fluid-resonant oscillations were ruled out as causes on the basis of definitive experimental data, leaving fluid-dynamic oscillations as a possible cause. The base surface Sherwood number was well correlated by power-law dependences on the Reynolds and Schmidt numbers. Fluid flow experiments encompassing oil-lampblack flow visualization, helium bubble flow visualization, and spectral analysis of the pressure field at the cavity base were also carried out.

The Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Painting of Myeongbujeon Hall in Namwon Seonwonsa temple was painted in 1917 by seven monk painters including Geumeo Manchong, Sango and Haengeun. In the painting, Korean National Flag (Taegeukgi), a trace of anti-Japanese movement that had been hidden under suppression during the invaded by the Japanese period, was found on the surface of official wooden hat in Sixth King (Byeonseongdaewang). Elements of Pb, S and Si were commonly detected by the P-XRF of the painting pigments to be analyzed, which was estimated the characteristics of the Sinamchae made by mixing colored metal oxides and glass powder, and data were secured. As the optial microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and SEM-EDS analysis show that black is chinese ink and lampblack ink, white is lead hydroxide and chalk, gold is gold foil, yellow is iron oxide yellow, massicot and gamboge, red is cinnaba, iron hydroxide and minium, green is emerald green, blue is ultramarine, respectively. As the infrared photography, various coloring techniques and traces of several overlapping for completeness were found. A comprehensive considerations of these shows that various coloring techniques with back, bottom and middle colorations were used. The Taegeuk pattern is interpreted as making a circle shape with a minium and painting with emerald green over it.

Abstract:
The mass transfer (analogous to heat transfer) and pressure loss characteristics of staggered short pin-fin arrays are investigated experimentally in the range of Reynolds number 3000 to 18,000 based on fin diameter and mean approach-flow velocity. Three different shapes of fins with aspect ratio of 2 are examined: one uniform-diameter circular fin (UDCF) and two stepped-diameter circular fins (SDCF1 and SDCF2). Flow visualization using oil-lampblack reveals complex flow characteristics associated with the repeated production of horseshoe vortices and fin wakes, and the interactions among these. The SDCF1 and SDCF2 arrays show flow characteristics different from the UDCF array due to downflow from the steps. For all arrays tested, the near-endwall flow varies row by row in the initial rows until it reaches a stable pattern after the third row. The row-averaged Sherwood numbers obtained from the naphthalene sublimation experiment also show a row-by-row variation pattern similar to the flow results. While the SDCF2 array has the highest mass transfer rate, the SDCF1 array has the smallest pressure loss at the same approach-flow velocity. The fin surfaces have higher array-averaged Sherwood number than the endwall and the ratio between these changes with fin shape and Reynolds number. The performance of the pin-fin arrays is analyzed under two different constraints: the mass[heat transfer rate at fixed pumping power, and the mass/heat transfer area and pressure loss to fulfill fixed heat load at a fixed mass flow rate. In both cases, the SDCF2 array shows the best performance.

Full text
Abstract:
AbstractEast Asian inks are a major component of calligraphy, paintings, and prints in China, Japan, and Korea and are historically made from either pine soot or oil‐lamp soot mixed with a proteinaceous binder. Although the inks from the two different soot sources have different properties in East Asian works of art, no non‐destructive methods to differentiate them scientifically currently exist. Raman spectroscopy (RS) of carbonaceous materials is commonly used to extract information about their properties and has been applied here to East Asian inks. Soots used in making modern inks were collected from 10 sources in China and Japan and analyzed using RS. RS using 405‐, 633‐, and 785‐nm excitation has been able to differentiate pine soot from oil‐lamp soot, also called lampblack. In addition, principal component analysis (PCA) of only 785‐nm Raman spectra has been able to discriminate between two different soots used in a 19th‐century Japanese woodblock printing of Kaishien Gaden. In addition to allowing discrimination between inks on East Asian works of art, these results may be of use to other fields using carbonaceous materials.
