Full textThe province of Lambayeque presents a state of social and economic underdevelopment, characterized by the neglect of basic needs that translates into a deficient life for its inhabitants. Prior to the present investigation, there was no technical information on such in a general or detailed manner in the whole province. In this sense, with a view to contributing to the province’s social progress, there is a need to diagnose social problems through a measurement index whose results can be used to generate proposals that generate a significant change in the quality of life of the population. Thus, this research assesses the state of social progress of the province and its 12 districts by measuring the social progress index, proposed by the Social Progress Imperative organization. Using this methodology, three dimensions of social progress were evaluated: (a) basic human needs, (b) fundamentals of well-being, and (c) opportunities. These dimensions subdivided into components, grouped into various indicators, enable the provision of quantitative information. Surveys were applied to households in the districts of the province. Among the relevant findings it was observed by dimension that, the province reached a low middle level in basic human needs, low in fundamentals of well-being and low middle in opportunities; and, at the district level, the capital reaches a high middle level in the two first measures, and extreme low level in opportunities, while the rest of the districts present variable results, even of very low and extreme low level. Key words: Social progress index, Social Progress Imperative, Lambayeque

Full textThe objective of this research work is to calculate the Social Progress Index for the province of Chiclayo, according to the methodology presented by the Social Progress Imperative and adapted by CENTRUM Católica. The focus of the research is descriptive, quantitative and with a cross-sectional process. The Social Progress Index of Chiclayo is characterized by incorporating social and environmental indicators, these are indicators of results but not of management and go beyond the economic indicators that are commonly used to explain the path of the well-being of a region, this calculation is the first work presented for the province of Chiclayo. In order to do so, information from primary and secondary sources was used, the first based on surveys conducted in the sample selected in the districts of Chiclayo, José Leonardo Ortiz and La Victoria, applied to 385 households; the secondary source was obtained from public institutions with public information and validated for the 2017 period. For the calculation of the SPI, the various processes established by the Social Progress Imperative model were followed, which consisted in: (a) specifying the concepts to be measured, (b) identifying and selecting the indicators and their databases, (c) consolidate the indicator database, (d) conceptualize the utopias and dystopias for the indicators, (e) perform the statistical analysis and internal consistency of the indicators, (f) determine the beta index; and (g) adjust the Social Progress Index according to the sensitivity analysis, benchmark and analysis of experts in the field, among others. The result of the present study shows that the SPI that the province of Chiclayo has a score of 52.57 placing it at a low level of social progress. This result reveals the average of the score of the three dimensions: (a) basic human needs with a result of 65.46; (b) welfare fundamentals with a result of 40.65; and (c) opportunities with a result of 51.61. At the district level, the three study districts are located in the low range, the district of La Victoria vi has the highest score of 53.88 followed by the district of Chiclayo with a score of 53.70 and finally the district of José Leonardo Ortiz with 50.12 points, which do not present large differences, these results are below the SPI of the Lambayeque region. This shows the low level of reality of the province of Chiclayo in terms of its development of social progress, which serves as a holistic tool for the actions that generate greater progress and welfare of the population

Full textThe lack of reliable studies and tools that measure social progress in the province of Ferreñafe, contributed to reduce the possibilities of sustainable development. Therefore, it was proposed to use the methodology developed by the Social Progress Imperative (SPI) and to know the Social Progress Index. To that purpose, the current investigation took the people who live in urban areas as a subject of study. The dimensions that were analyzed are: (a) Basic human needs, (b) Foundations of the well-being, and (c) Opportunities. In fact, for the design of the investigation, it was considered that it should have a non-experimental, descriptive crosssectional approach. Likewise, the required information demanded the application of survey questionnaires through direct interviews and the compilation of information provided by secondary sources, and then to proceed to statistical analysis. The results obtained for the province of Ferreñafe were placed in a classification "medium- low" according to the SPI; and allowed concluding that there is a tendency in which urban areas near the coast have better indicators in the dimensions than those located in the highlands region; however, regarding to the personal security component, there is a greater peace and security perception in the inhabitants from the highlands region when it was compared to other studies such as SPI Peru Regional 2016. Finally, to change the obtained result, it is recommended to coordinate the actions to be executed between public and private entities, assigning responsibilities and defining deadlines, in public ceremonies.
