Cohen, Elizabeth Storr, and Margaret Louise Reeves, eds. The Youth of Early Modern Women. NL Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789462984325.

Abstract:
Through fifteen essays that work from a rich array of primary sources, this collection makes the novel claim that early modern European women, like men, had a youth. European culture recognised that, between childhood and full adulthood, early modern women experienced distinctive physiological, social, and psychological transformations. Drawing on two mutually shaped layers of inquiry — cultural constructions of youth and lived experiences — these essays exploit a wide variety of sources, including literary and autobiographical works, conduct literature, judicial and asylum records, drawings, and material culture. The geographical and temporal ranges traverse England, Ireland, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Spain, and Mexico from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century. This volume brings fresh attention to representations of female youth, their own life writings, young women’s training for adulthood, courtship, and the emergent sexual lives of young unmarried women.

Scott, Tom. The Romandie. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198725275.003.0015.

Abstract:
The Romandie lay at the intersection of international trade routes from Italy over the alpine passes (controlled by Savoy) and north-westwards over the Jura mountains into the Franche-Comté and onwards to France and the Low Countries, though the pre-eminence of the Genevan fairs was challenged by Lyon. Western Switzerland was heavily reliant upon grain from Alsace and above all salt from the brine pits of the Franche-Comté (essential in cattle-rearing, dairying and cheese-making). The Vaud, on the northern littoral of Lake Geneva was agriculturally fertile (especially viticulture, while Lakes Geneva and Neuchâtel were important sources of fish. Yet the Vaud had few urban centres of importance, barring Lausanne and Geneva, while many new town foundations of 13th/14th century subsequently disappeared.

Rahat, Gideon, and Ofer Kenig. A Cross-National Analysis of Political Personalization. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198808008.003.0009.

Abstract:
The chapter presents an integrated cross-national analysis of political personalization in all our twenty-six countries. The two indicators of personalization online stand apart in terms of the incidents of depersonalization. An examination of the relationship between the three dimensions finds personalization especially in the institutional realm. In the other two dimensions, media and behavior, most cases are of personalization, but many indicate no trend or depersonalization. A comparison by country illustrates that, except for the cases of extreme personalization in Italy and Israel and a few cases of depersonalization, especially in Switzerland, most countries experience moderate–low or low levels of personalization. Most explanations for variance are ruled out. A moderately negative correlation is found between national levels of self-expression and national levels of political personalization. The chapter ends with a review of the claims raised in the literature about the consequences of political personalization.
