Abstract:
This paper examines aspects of Lacanian critical social theory in terms of its appropriateness for understanding urban planning. We tell a story from planning practice in Western Australia which we then analyse by introducing Lacan's notion of the master signifier and the sets of knowledges, values and practices which master signifiers embody. We then apply the Lacanian concepts of desire and jouissance, followed by an exploration of the Lacanian four discourses and the speech acts, or language games, of the planner and the ‘planned’. We conclude by estimating the potential value of Lacanian analysis for understanding planning praxis.

Abstract:
AbstractWhile the recent interest in affects and emotions in world politics is encouraging, the crucial relationships between affect, emotion, and discourse have remained largely under-examined. This article offers a framework for understanding the relations between affect and discourse by drawing upon the theories of Jacques Lacan. Lacan conceptualises affect as an experience which lies beyond the realm of discourse, yet nevertheless has an effect upon discourse. Emotion results when affects are articulated within discourse as recognisable signifiers. In addition, Lacanian theory conceptualises affect and discourse as overlapping yet not as coextensive, allowing analyses to theoretically distinguish between discourses which become sites of affective investment for audiences and those that do not. Thus, analysing the mutual infusion of affect and discourse can shed light on why some discourses are more politically efficacious than others. The empirical import of these ideas is offered in an analysis of American affective reactions to 11 September 2001.

Abstract:
In this article, I dissect an excerpt from George W. Bush’s address to a joint session of Congress and the American people wherein the former President of the United States (POTUS) uttered the (catch)phrase the ‘war on terror’ (WOT). To accomplish this dissection, I apply Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) together with Lacanian psychoanalysis among other critical tools. My aim here is to deconstruct/recode the WOT discourse in the hope of opening up possibilities for alternative, and more constructive, counter-discourses on the social problem of ‘terrorism’ that afford multiple subject positions beyond the (counter)terrorism binary. As an Orientalist ideology, the WOT indexes the larger archive of American exceptionalism and can be traced back to the rise of the neo-conservative movement in the 1980s. This analysis is particularly relevant in the context of the current political climate in the United States, where the WOT rhetoric continues to normalise the logic of Islamophobia.

This paper examines the establishment of the analysand's demand in the analytic experience, taking into account his position of desiring subject in the wake of castration. It aims to look into the place of demand in the transference by considering aspects that are relevant to the clinical work, such as the maneuvers of the analyst in the development of one's analysis. On that basis, the author investigates the trajectory of Lacan's elaborations on the concept of transference and its applicability in the psychoanalytic clinic.KEYWORDS: Demand. Desiring Subject. Abstract:
This article expounds critical reflections and analysis on the discourse regarding the conflict in Palestine. The case is posited through the lens of a certain ethical position, namely the ethics of the real and the framework that it supports, namely Lacanian Psychoanalysis. Reflecting on the impasse that the discourse on the conflict in Palestine has been confronted with, this article argues that political analysis may take insight from psychoanalysis to make the course of analysis directed toward the deconstruction of the obsessive neuroticism at the core of this impasse. In doing so, the political analysis should take a retroductive course, moving back and forth between the ontological and ontical planes of the reality analysed. This enables political analysis to account more systematically the factors of inevitable lack in the structure and split on the subject and the corresponding affective dimension, which are central in the political constitution of social formation and identity. Through the analytical lens and approach from psychoanalysis, this article investigates and demonstrates how most of the discourses on the conflict in Palestine have strong propensity to avoid the conflict, which on its turn counterintuitively serve to prolong or fan further conflict, as they focus on the neatness and seamlessness of the reality constituted through their own discourses rather than grappling with the conflict.

Abstract:
This article uses a Lacanian framework both to map types of posthuman discourse that shape the debates around science, technology and the fate of the human, and to advocate a more psychoanalytic framing of these debates. It identifies three dominant posthumanisms: ‘doomsday’, ‘celebratory’ and ‘critical’. The first adopts an apocalyptic tone in the defence of a supposedly natural human essence; the second unthinkingly embraces the promise of new technologies for augmenting human potential; the third draws on the critique of humanism to balance the first two tendencies. The article then proposes a ‘fractal’ reading of both Freud and Lacan which updates psychoanalysis for the online world today. Finally, the article aligns each of the types of posthumanism with one of Lacan's ‘four discourses’: ‘doomsday’ posthumanism with the discourse of the hysteric, ‘celebratory’ posthumanism with that of the master, and ‘critical’ posthumanism with that of the analyst, thereby putting psychoanalysis at the centre of the posthuman rather than its margins.

Abstract:
This dissertation presents an interdisciplinary work aimed at investigate the discursive construction of otherness in mental health domain in the Western culture, and in detail the role of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), published by the APA, in this process. Critical psychology perspective oriented the research and the data collection. The analysis is conducted through a multi-method approach (Critical Discourse Analysis, Semiotic Analysis and Lacanian Discourse Analysis), which integrates several traditions with a particular concern about the ways in which power and ideology are discursively enacted, produced and resisted by text and talk and shape the concept of mental disorders. The study (1) examines how legitimisation and hegemony have been discursively constructed, legitimised and consolidated over time. The study (2) aims to investigate the scientific debate around the deletion of NPD in order to reconstruct and deconstruct the decisional process through which the boundaries between normality and pathology are constructed. The study (3) aims to investigate how the discourse of DSM was contested by discourse of other social actors involved in the mental-health domain in order to analyze the effect on shaping subjectivity of patients and mental-health professionals.

Abstract:
The multidisciplinary residency in health is a postgraduate modality of education, focused on the education service. It emerges in the Brazilian context as a complementary proposal in order to achieve the goals and the principles recommended by the Unified Health System (SUS), particularly as to the integrality. In addition to bringing implications and challenges for the psychology in professional practice, inserting it into the entanglement of dense and complex fields (health, education and public policy), the modality proposes that professionals with different backgrounds act in the same field, with joint discussions and interventions. The question that drives the research is the subject-position in multidisciplinary residency program in terms of the combined health-education model. It asserts that the subject-position is the sliding discursive object (symbolic texture) that takes into account the subject constituted in hobble of the language and questioned by the unconscious, and that manifests as significant effect towards of the great Other. For this, appraise the interface of the theoretical contributions of the Pecheutian discourse analysis and Lacanian psychoanalysis. The discourse analysis sustain the discourse as effect of senses mediated by ideology, and occupies, especially, of the incursion of otherness of the discourse-other about the same. The Lacanian psychoanalysis, in turn, confirms the primacy of the unconscious structured as a language face an imaginary self and seek for the subject marked as missing, that divided, makes of the discourse the statute of the meaning. Thus, it is prominent in the analysis of the object the circumstantial methodology given the symbolic and hobbling character of the position-subject in the discourse. The analysis was performed by the interpretation as an analytical gesture, accompanying the proper elations of the object. The corpora consists of a both written and oral materiality. The written consists of clippings of laws, ordinances and resolutions that found a modality of multiprofessional residency and reinforce the ideals of the unified health system; the oral materiality comprise of clippings and discursive fragments coming from the transcription of the supervision performed by the clinical practice of psychologist resident in the hospital scene. From the analysis, it is concluded that the written materiality stands as field-Other that ordains the political structure of multiprofessional residency and directs the maintenance of the order and reproduction of the hierarchical relations by the ideology. This materiality, in turn, acts as intradiscourse and reverberates in the discursive memory and in the clinical practice. The position-subject, in the plan of the significant articulation, slides and produce meanings that denote either the maintenance and reproduction of a position merged to the medical discourse, scientific-positivist; nevertheless the subject-position is marked by knowledge conditioned to the commodity fetish, triggering the order of the capital in the insignia of multiprofessionality and continuing education. The work led, finally, follow the transmutations of the position-subject, regardless of the individual or the naturalization of the senses from the function it holds. The object position-subject reiterated the construction of reality from the missing condition. It\'s that missing and incomplete condition that grants to desire the way that the subject will position in this and other way - in training, at work, in life.

Abstract:
There is no guarantee for the subject that loves; The relationship with the other is an attempt to seek happiness, but it is also in loving that the subject becomes more susceptible to suffering. Psychoanalysis points to this paradox since Freud and Lacan uses the paradox as a possible figure of speech to talk about love. The main Lacanian aphorism on the subject is \"to love is to give what you do not have,\" but to get to that point of his teaching, Lacan dwells on countless questions throughout his seminars. Thus, the purpose of this work was to investigate Jacques Lacan\'s use of the paradox to talk about love. The Pêcheutian Discourse Analysis (AD) contributed to elucidate the subject\'s interpellation into subject and the identification with dominant discursive formations on love, being this identification founder of an imaginary unit. Since some works of art were used to illustrate the relation between love and paradox, it was from AD that such works were analyzed and incorporated into the results. In addition, this indexing methodology helped to interpret Lacan\'s course, especially in Seminary VIII in which he uses Plato\'s text \"The Banquet\" to relate, for example, the concept of lack with the theme of love, An analysis whose understanding is fundamental for the accomplishment of the objective proposed in this work. It was then possible to point out, as one of the main results of this analysis, that the object that the subject seeks in desire, in its most varied forms, is never what he finds. This lack is central to the object relationship from the psychoanalytic point of view, since the frustration inherent in this search makes the gift something more important than the presence or absence of the object itself, because what is really in question is the love of one who can make the object a gift. In this way, there is something beyond the love relationship, which is lacking in it and can only be offered while lacking. It is only when something is lacking in love, making it imperfect and different from a fusion, that it can happen between two subjects who never, since they are subjects, could become one or desire the same thing. In conclusion, therefore, in a capitalist society that values lucrative and secure investments, to love means to plunge into vulnerability and to face the constitutive lack that bursts any attempt of control and opens impossibilities. To illuminate the paradoxical character of love is an alternative to defend it from security speeches that end up killing the chances that the love experience has to bring some meaning to life

Abstract:
This essay arises from a concern about the sayings about woman as regards her societal role of mother, conveyed on media. Our research corpus was composed of headlines about abandonment and infanticide conveyed on news online homepages, based on the articulation of Discourse Analysis (Pêcheux, 2008, 2009) and lacanian psychoanalysis. Our main objective was to analyze the discoursivization about mother-woman by media in contemporaneity, based on the concept of discoursive generics (Tfouni, 2004) and to observe if the analyzed headlines produce effects that may be understood as index elements that The woman, as a group, does not exist, such as advocated by Lacan (2008b). Analysis was based on the consideration that news are events that are beyond the current discourses and are index to be observed, since they point to a discursive process of/in contemporaneity. The effects of the discoursivization of the cruel acts performed by such mothers, counterposing the group of all mothers, lays on the generics that are present in the interdiscourse and act on sense production. When narrating a different case from the group mothers-women, the headlines and the news point the preconceived that is (re)affirmed about maternity as something womanly. On the other hand, the fact that it is possible to say something such as what is said on this news highlights a puncture in the group of all women and mothers, a less-one that does not allow unity to perpetuate. Paradoxically, there is the covering of such lack, existing in language itself, that does not allow to name subjects such as those women, if not against the (supposedly homogeneous) group of women-mothers. Moreover, we underline the construction of the monster figure (Foucault, 2001) produced by media, rooted to a discourse related to nature and culture, and produces, once more, homogenization, regarding the group of monsters-mothers-women. The notion of public and private is tangentially present on other elements of analysis. When we go from singular to universal, we are also moving from private to public and, in such sense, media has an essential role. If we assume that women always abandoned or killed their children, we can also state that the strangeness of news such as those of the headlines we cite as corpus of analysis, indicate that those events were kept to the private sphere. When it is conveyed to public knowledge, via media, the spectacle is produced (Rubim, 2004). And, when producing the spectacle, the effect of singularity is produced, exception that underlines the group, based on the preconceived material that is reactivated from the generics and the interdiscourse. Thus, the headlines produce a paradoxical effect: when mentioning the exception, corroborate the statement that The woman, as a group, does not exist, at the same time as, when considering the exception, make it universal, creating another homogeneous category, of the monsters-mothers-women, covering again the puncture of the group and concealing the lacanian formula

Abstract:
This research aims at evidencing the relation \"unconsciousness of psychoanalysis\" and \"unconsciousness of ideology\", based on the production of knowledge of healthcare professionals and on the production of knowledge regarding their tasks. During this research, considering some theoretical deadlocks, we have conceptualized \"liquid modernity\" and \"insecurity\" and, having these concepts along with the concepts of \"religiousness\" and the treatment of \"death in reality\", we have drafted theoretical counterpoints to update uneasiness in modern culture. Therefore, according to the assumptions of Baumen (2008) regarding Pêcheux\"s discourse and its interface with the Lacanian psychoanalysis, the aim of this study is to find the ,,linguistic turns in the surplus-joiussance\", places where the pain finds its way in the registers of symbolic. In other words, the surplus-joiussance and the entry or permanence in the symbolic is the way out for all the pain and sorrow caused by daily healthcare tasks to the workers, who consider themselves powerless when dealing with users who need help and attention. In order to reach the major aim of this study, we have proposed the scansion of some of these constructions in preliminary data analysis through discourse sequences and cuttings in the production of one of the subjects, an attempt of theoretical construction in discourse analysis, where every step taken towards certainty implies some regression. Considering the counterpoint between the discourse formations privileged by us - one from dominant official discourse, and the other one built by attempts of resistance and/or reiteration of the subjects - regarding this discourse, we have verified that the focus of the dominant official discourse is different than the focus of the worker when dealing with healthcare service. That is where we find ourselves when trying to bring discrepancies together or to evidence reproductions in spite of the fact that they appear superficially as resistance or as discourse of resistance, or even as evidence marks of resistance. The corpora are composed of guidelines that regulate healthcare services - which can be found in manuals of the Ministry of Health regarding the consolidation policies of the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS) and in public health laws and guidelines, particularly in the Law 8080/90 -, and of the discourse production of workers. The observation of these materials has stimulated the analysis of linguistic marks found in the interview. This has enabled the repression of subjectivity as a role of ideology, unfolding other singular senses, in an attempt to homogenize the speech. Considering this theoretical and methodological basis, it was possible to evidence the role of ideology in the discourse of subjects involved in the illusion that work is redemption, a way to access a greater benefit and to reach happiness and achievement. Finally, as a whole, we have mobilized the four fundamental discourses of psychoanalysis to indicate that in the capitalist discourse, the absence of the bar of discourse impossibility can classify religion and religiousness, among other objects, as accessible products to the willing subject and to the consumer in modern days.

Abstract:
Despite deepening economic interdependence, Japan and China had rocky relations due to the so-called 'history problem', a controversy over the very different understanding of the Second Sino-Japanese War (1931-1945) held by the two sides. Why did the 'history problem' persist as a political issue in Sino-Japanese relations? To the question, this thesis has a twofold argument: 1) The 'history problem' was a discourse revolving around the 'Victim-victimizer Duality', a bilateral norm that relationally structured Japan and China's respective subject position (identity) as the victimizer and the victim; 2) The 'history problem' persisted, because the different discursive strategies that social agents on both sides deployed to negotiate the Victim-victimizer Duality had created a vicious circle, a situation in which the Chinese government demanded recognition of victimhood from Japan while the Japanese government responded in ways that fragmentised China's victimhood. Over time, the vicious circle accumulated resentments between the two sides, thereby turning the 'history problem' into a persisting bilateral issue. Using a method rooted in the psychoanalytic theory of Jacques Lacan, the thesis analyses three major sub-issues in the 'history problem', i.e., the Textbook Issue, the Yasukuni Issue, and the Nanking Massacre Debate. The data of the discourse analysis are based on primary sources including news articles in People's Daily, official documents of the Diet proceedings, unclassified documents collected from the Diplomatic Archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, and interviews with members of the Japan-China Joint History Research Project, etc. Overall, this thesis contributes to the study of Sino-Japanese relations by offering new insights into the bilateral dynamics centred around the 'history problem'; it also contributes to International Relations (IR) theory by developing a methodology that enables IR researchers to more effectively analyse how subjective factors (e.g., identity, fantasies, anxieties, etc.) shape the formation of political discourses in international relations.

Abstract:
This study is based on the assumptions of Lacanian psychoanalysis as well as in the Discourse Analysis of French tradition. Its aim is the investigation of Sanja Ivekovi\'s art as denunciation of the violence against women. We analyze the impact of her work \"Women\'s House (Sunglasses)\" (Ivekovi, 2002/2011) about the spectator-subject, setting it in the second Lacanian aesthetic (Recalcati, 2005) as we take the artist\'s production as an encounter with the real. When the spectator-subject looks at Ivekovi\'s creation, it causes him commotion. The moment he confronts the representations of violence against women, which stain the symbolic-imaginary cohesion of the images causing the object to appear [a] scope-like, a representative eclipse of the spectator-subject, he feels shocked. We consider the Ivekovis images as an index of contemporaneity, as symbolic objects that inversely inscribe what is missing, what escapes the visible, in the social formation. The capitalist\'s discourse commands the current subjectivities once it puts the subject into the position of the discourse\'s transmitter. From this radical management, we have reaped the ruin of the verb such as a call to the violence against women, an invocation that was reported by Ivekovi through the presentation of material proofs of her art. The supposed rejection of the symbolic lack in the social display ends up promoting the warped functioning by the female face of the sexual board, which fixes the joy that does not refer to the Other as a place of discourse, or the possibility of a social bond. The predominance of the real pushes the subjects to disruptive phenomena, such as the violence against women, which despises symbolic mediation. The metaphoric impoverishment allows the super-ego instance to impose itself upon the ideal ego, weakening the ideals coming from the Other\'s discourse. The artist\'s creation points to a social performance governed by the totemic parent. This means that the instance of the super-ego permeates the public space through media dictates, which function as bearers of an excessive pulse, regulator of subjectivities. The subjects, in an attempt to dominate this excessive drive that is attached to the super-ego, incur violent actions due to the fragility of the symbolic resources. The name itself present in the composition, establishes the particular subjectivating mark to the detriment of the universalizing discourse, a characteristic of the contemporary unrest. By delimiting the subjective positions of the female deponents in Ivekovi\'s invention, it is noticed their urge for social memory, regent of the readability of the symbolic register which was recovered from their enunciations. In the first excerpt, we pointed out the subject\'s division into a subjective vacillation caused by the clash between a saying of positive judgment about women (\"she loved being a woman\"), and the opposite discourse (\"being woman-humiliations\") regarding the negative values attributed to them. Such collision of sayings should not be reduced to their diversity of positions in the discourse, but, referred to something irreducible to it, something that tears it apart, once that it is impossible for the citizens of language. In the second cut, in demanding a \"sign of love\" (Laurent, 2006), regardless of the disagreements witnessed (\"I ignored violence from the beginning\" and \"I ignored violence because I loved him\"), the subject seeks a symbolic relationship, a relationship between subjects, which is at stake in the \"love\" matter. In this claim \"violence\" assumes connotations of \"love\" for the subject.

Abstract:
The aim of this work is to promote possible connections between two indiciary disciplines, the Pêcheux\'s discourse analysis (DA) and the Lacan-oriented psychoanalysis, departing from the interpretation concept. The works of Pêcheux in DA and Lacan in psychoanalysis bring a distinct position to crucial concepts of this research. It was also used the Authier-Revuz\'s works about discursive heterogeneity, in which DA and psychoanalysis articulate, especially in questions referring to the Other and the production of discourse. Along with the theory, we adopted the analysis of oral fiction narratives with the intention to point the contribution of the interpretation in DA and in psychoanalysis for the advance of the indiciary paradigm and also to return in the analysis from data to theory, in a constant check-up of concepts. It was seen, in the analysis, a junction of central concepts of these two disciplines such as ideology, unconscious, desire and the Other. There are points where the DA advances and the psychoanalysis stops. The DA leaves aside the unconscious mind and concentrates in the social part of the subject and what he says, however it is known that the question of the unconscious mind is only left aside, but is always present in the Pêcheux\'s works (as on the two forgetting incidents). The psychoanalysis on the other hand leaves aside what is external to the discourse, not contemplating the part exerted by the ideology on the subject, for example. Such statements point to a harmony between the interpretation in DA and in psychoanalysis, having as final product the psychoanalytical-discursive analyst. This new analyst uses points of approach between DA and psychoanalysis positioning himself in front of a discourse that is marked by the slips of the subject of the unconscious and of the subject of the ideology. Therefore, there\'s no birth of a new theory, but a new theoretical position that aims to give to the data in Human Sciences and, particularly to the studies about the discourse, \"a more complete\" way of approaching the questions linked to the subject\'s desire and his position in the society where he lives. A \"more complete\" way that is without a doubt incomplete, as incomplete as the subjects and the discourses we analyze.

This dissertation aims to focus on the impossibilities of education from each of the discursive forms it can assume in societies. It begins with a discussion of the proximity between psychoanalysis and education as two distinct epistemological fields until it reaches the point where Freud comprehends them as impossible discursive positions. The main used tool is the theory of discourse by Jacques Lacan, a reinterpretation of the three impossible Freudians. With it, is undertaken the investment of thinking the discursive contingencies predominantly present in the time period comprehended between the end of the Middle Ages and nowadays. The enjoyment [jouissance] modalizations for each discourse are presented and their corresponding way of education. Of the five discourses thought by Lacan master, hysterical, university, capitalist and analytical it is given a stronger focus to those considered politically hegemonic nowadays: the university and the capitalist. A discursive change between the first and the second is utilized to approach the transformations that occurred in the time period in which production capitalism gives way to consumer capitalism, or late capitalism. Its final goal is to discuss and raise questions on how the uneasiness nowadays is configured and how the hegemonic discourse engender the subjectivities of the subjects in education and society. For this, it will work with the contingent and historic, and not only structural of the Lacanian subject, covering and articulating the theoretical contributions of several authors who dedicated themselves to thinking about the themes that compose this subject

Abstract:
This study investigates the hypothesis that Lacans theory of the Four Discourses (1969-70) is an attempt to formalize certain questions which were left open within the theory of Psychoanalytic Act established, by himself, shortly before. Thus, the text parts with the investigation of the relationship between notions of discourse and act within Lacans teaching up to the year 1968, emphasizing the proximity and remoteness movements of these notions. Therefore elects the operations related to the subject within his constitution and the operations regarding the psychoanalytic experience in order to frame such concepts, as well as the debate on the implications of these notions of act and discourse on both symbolic and real registers. It goes on to indicate that the renewed notion of structure, linked to Lacans theory of discourse, is an answer to some logical and ethical questions that the theory of the act left him with. Further on, the thesis exposes the intention of following Lacan\'s formalizations of how the theory of Discourses configures the Lacanian Field, a field based on what Lacan called \"impossibility of sexual relationship\", which reflects the bipartite field of enjoyment (jouissance). Finally, the study brings evidence of how the discourse of the analyst is the formalization of the Psychoanalytic Act based on the logic of non sexual relationship and how such formalization brings up fundamental implications on the field of ethics, denominated as the social bond by Lacan

Abstract:
What gives us the right to speak of a Deleuzian philosophy, a philosophy at first sight concerned solely with interpreting other philosophers and writers? And granted there is such an entity as ‘Deleuzian philosophy’, is this philosophy a practically and politically consequential one, as so many interpreters have hoped? This book begins from Deleuze’s method of ‘free indirect discourse’ to locate and explicate Deleuze’s philosophy. Through free indirect discourse Deleuze burrows under the texts of a thinker to attain the underlying question, which he inherits critically to expound his own philosophy of ‘transcendental empiricism’. This philosophy however was politically impotent, for its final practical conclusion was that one had to ‘wait for failure’, which is strictly impossible. This book goes on to argue that it is the self-recognition of this impasse that forced Deleuze into a veritable wager, the collaboration with Guattari. For Deleuze not only recognised the existence of this practical/political impasse, he also understood its source: the strong structuralist influence in his philosophy. And he had the intuition that in Guattari there were the germs of a way of thinking that could move beyond structuralism (more specifically its culmination in Lacanian psychoanalysis). Finally, this new Deleuzian practical philosophy is explicated through an examination of Deleuze’s ambiguous relation to Foucault: Deleuze would ultimately opt for ‘desire’, not Foucault’s ‘power’, as the elementary unit of political analysis, because it is the assemblage of desire that makes possible the specific constellation of power in a given society.
