Abstract:
How can the individual find the road to emancipation if modernity, which promises it to him, turns out to be a cage? If he is ensnared and not liberated by social, political, economic and technical-scientific progress, lost in the labyrinth of the big cities? Works from the last decades of the 19th century by Ibsen, Bang, Strindberg, Obstfelder and Claussen show the acute perception of the dilemma, but also invite one to venture into the reading of the signs of the modern: a path with an uncertain outcome, but one that produces decisive results for literature. Heirs to Romanticism, Realism and Naturalism, open to the horizons of Symbolism, these Scandinavian authors inaugurate European Modernism.

Abstract:
It is now widely acknowledged, and far beyond Ireland, that Tim Robinson’s two volumes jointly known as Stones of Aran (‘Pilgrimage’ and ‘Labyrinth’) are modern classics, exemplary in every way of how to write about place and to do so with a formal, literary accomplishment that more than earns the right to nod at Ruskin’s own classic. In 2012, Robinson went back to Árainn, the largest of the three islands, for the first time in nearly ten years. He did so at the urging of Andrew McNeillie, with whom he spent two and a half days revisiting old haunts. This chapter makes account of the occasion and uses, in the process, a unique document provided by Robinson as an experiment in annotating his work. This prompts McNeillie to investigate some of his own annotations and footnotes to Aran.

Abstract:
Leibniz supplied the first differential equation model for an elastic wooden beam and realized that doing so involves a number of methodological oddities that remain with us in modern science, such as the “greediness of scales” problems discussed in Essay 5. The present essay details how many of the metaphysical extravaganzas of Leibniz’s notorious metaphysics can be closely linked to these underlying sources of methodological concern. A close study of his beam model supplies us with a concrete illustration of his celebrated labyrinth of the continuum and the manner in which his two kingdoms of explanation interface with one another.

Jouve Martin, José R., and Stephen Wittek, eds. Performing Conversion. Edinburgh University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474482721.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This volume asks, how did theatrical practice shape the multiplying forms of conversion that emerged in early modern Europe? Each chapter focuses on a specific city or selection of cities, beginning with Venice, then moving to London, Mexico City, Tlaxcalla, Seville, Madrid, Amsterdam, Zürich, Berne, and Lucerne (among others). Collectively, these studies establish a picture of early modernity as an age teeming with both excitement and anxiety over conversional activity. In addition to considering the commercial theatre that produced professional dramatists such as Lope de Vega and Thomas Middleton, the volume surveys a wide variety of other kinds of theatre that brought theatricality into formative relationship with conversional practice. Examples range from civic pageantry in Piazza San Marco, to mechanical statues in Amsterdam’s pleasure labyrinths, to the dramatic dialogues performed by students of rhetoric in colonial Mexico. As a whole, the volume addresses issues of conversion as it pertains to early modern theatre, literature, theology, philosophy, economics, urban culture, globalism, colonialism, trade, and cross-cultural exchange.
