Abstract:
This international conference, the first of its kind to be organized in the UK, was held at the Manchester Metropolitan University and the International Centre for Labour Studies, the University of Manchester, on July 16–18, 2003. The conference organizers were Neville Kirk, MMU, on behalf of the Society for the Study of Labour History, Anne Morrow, on behalf of the International Centre for Labour Studies, and Greg Patmore, University of Sydney, for the Australian Society for the Study of Labour History. The aim was to bring together invited speakers in order to advance our knowledge and understanding of the labor history of Britain and Australia. Feedback received by the organizers suggests that this aim was successfully realized. However, attendance on the part of British colleagues was somewhat disappointing, perhaps a reflection of the minority interest among British labor historians in comparative history.

Abstract:
Ukraine has gone a long way in developing the right to work. The lack of own statehood for a long period led to the fact that labour relations were regulated by the legislation of empires, which included Ukrainian lands. The purpose of the article is to trace the genesis of the right to work in Ukraine from the beginning of its normative consolidation in the 19th century to the modern stage of bringing national legislation to European standards. Scientific novelty: for the first time, an analysis of the evolution of labour rights in legislation from the imperial acts to the present was carried out, the reasons for changes in the field of labour legislation were analysed. Methodology: the application of problem-chronological, comparative-historical, historical-legal methods made it possible to follow the genesis of the right to work in Ukrainian legislation from the imperial experience to the present. The combination of historical and jurisprudential methods contributed to the systematic examination of the problem, made it possible to follow the influence of the legal component on history, which determined the novelty of the research. Conclusion: The adoption of imperial legislation was conditioned by the deepening of capitalist relations, but it was limited in nature and did not adequately ensure the rights of workers. Soviet legislation regulated labour relations in more detail. Democratic principles were proclaimed, which, however, had a declarative nature, which was confirmed by the legislative consolidation of forced labour, discrimination in the field of labour relations. With the declaration of independence in Ukraine, labour relations were restructured on the basis of the market, but the Code of 1971 is still in force. With the signing of the Association Agreement with the EU in 2014, Ukrainian labour legislation is being brought closer to European standards.

An analysis of the principles first formulated in the legal literature, to one extent or another subsequently accepted by the science of labor law, which found legal fixation in the labor code of the Russian Federation, was carried out. Based on the analysis of the content of individual continuity and new principles of labor law, their relationship is shown, the preservation of continuity elements during updating. Some inaccuracies made by the legislator when forming a list of modern principles of labor law are shown. To eliminate them, it was proposed to amend Art. 2 of the Labor Code of the Russian Federation.

Abstract:
Labour historians have always shown an interest in working class men and women who participated in strikes, unions, and political parties. However, even when historians are receptive to the importance of family life behind public activism these scholars continue to use the “public sphere” as an approach for studying the family. This approach runs counter to historical logic because the daily life of those who join social movements and organizations involves far more than merely labour activism. To understand the true causes of collective resistance among workers, it is necessary to use the “private sphere” as an approach for studying labour protests as well. While this reverse perspective may not prove a panacea for all problems associated with analysing labour history, it will provide insight into the rather obscure motives of the working class for deciding whether or not to support the development of workers' movements. Furthermore, Jean H. Quataert wrote that examining working-class households makes it possible to keep “in focus at all times the lives of both men and women, young and old, and the variety of paid and unpaid work necessary to maintain the unit”.

Abstract:
Free labour constitutes the largest black hole in ancient Greek economic and social history. The New Institutional Economics approaches that are currently so influential in Greek economic history focus on growth and transaction costs, but have largely ignored labour; it is not accidental that Bresson's monumental synthesis of ancient Greek economies has no chapter devoted to the issue. This is what makes the volume edited by Edmund Stewart, Edward Harris, and David Lewis on skilled labour and professionalism in ancient societies such an important contribution. The thirteen chapters explore three major issues. The first concerns the processes through which the division of labour and specialization created distinctions between unskilled and skilled labour. The second theme focuses on the major advantages that treasured skills offered to those individuals and groups that possessed them, and the ways in which individuals and states recruited and bargained with skilled labourers. The third is the extent to which it is possible to use the concept of professionalization to describe the process by which some ancient occupations came to constitute professions. The volume examines various case studies: while in some instances it is possible to describe such forms of skilled labour as professions (doctors, sculptors, musicians, actors), in other areas (athletes, soldiers) such a label is highly misleading. Particularly valuable in this respect is the exploration of the impact of various factors and processes on the extent of professionalization of different occupations.
