Abstract:
AimIncreasing attacks on healthcare personnel in India have highlighted the need for improved communication between staff and patients. Currently, communication skill workshops target doctors and nurses, overlooking a key player relevant to patient satisfaction—allied health professionals (henceforth, AHPs). This study evaluates the impact of communication skills training for diagnostic laboratory and blood bank personnel on patient satisfaction scores.MethodThe impact of communication workshop for AHPs was tested through pre-workshop and post-workshop questionnaires to participants that tested how they handle communication with patients. Additionally, participants were also administered the questionnaire 4 months after the workshop to test knowledge retention. In parallel, the change in patient satisfaction towards AHPs was assessed by a pre-workshop and post-workshop patient survey.ResultsParticipants experienced a statistically significant improvement in communication skills, as measured by the pre-workshop and post-workshop questionnaires. This coincided with a significant increase in patient satisfaction scores after the workshop, as indicated by the patient satisfaction survey. The difference in communication skills scores between experienced and inexperienced personnel showed a marked decrease after the workshop, suggesting that such workshops can help inexperienced workers ‘catch up’ with more experienced workers. However, scores of all participants showed a statistically significant decrease after 4 months, suggesting that the use of such workshops can be enhanced through periodic refresher courses.ConclusionCommunication workshops for AHPs can play a crucial role in improving patient–hospital relations. These workshops can also help standardise services by bridging communication skill differences between experienced and inexperienced staff.

Abstract:
In October 1995, Takeshi Furuhashi and his collegues at the Bio-Electronics Laboratory of Nagoya University, Japan, organized the first of a series of on-line workshops, held entirely on the World Wide Web. The advertised advantages of the on-line format were to allow fruitful exchanges while avoiding physical travel, and to guarantee wide visibility of the discussion. The first two workshops in the series were devoted to evolutionary computation; they can be accessed on the web at http://www.bioele.nuee.nagoya-u.ac.jp. The third workshop, named “First On-Line Workshop on Soft Computing” (WSC1), had a broader scope, including all the techniques that go under the heading of “soft computing”, like fuzzy logic, neuro computing, genetic computing, and so on. WSC1 took place from August 19 to 30 1996, and it is accessible on the web at http://www.bioele.nuee.nagoya-u.ac.jp/wsc1/. Because the declared goal of an on-line workshop is to prompt discussion, the rules for submission were looser than in most traditional workshops: papers were not subject to peer review, and it was possible to submit already published papers. All the submitted papers were made visible on the web one week before the workshop, and people could send comments and questions by email during the two workshop weeks; all the questions, comments, and authors' replies are also visible at the WSC1 web site.

Rapid molecular testing methods are poised to replace many of the conventional, culturebased tests currently used in fields such as water quality and food science. Rapid qPCR methods have the benefit of being faster than conventional methods and provide a means to more accurately protect public health. However, many scientists and technicians in water and food quality microbiology laboratories have limited experience using these molecular tests. To ensure that practitioners can use and implement qPCR techniques successfully, we developed a week long workshop to provide hands-on training and exposure to rapid molecular methods for water quality management. This workshop trained academic professors, government employees, private industry representatives, and graduate students in rapid qPCR methods for monitoring recreational water quality. Attendees were immersed in these new methods with hands-on laboratory sessions, lectures, and one-on-one training. Upon completion, the attendees gained sufficient knowledge and practice to teach and share these new molecular techniques with colleagues at their respective laboratories. Key findings from this workshop demonstrated: 1) participants with no prior experience could be effectively trained to conduct highly repeatable qPCR analysis in one week; 2) participants with different desirable outcomes required exposure to a range of different platforms and sample processing approaches; and 3) the collaborative interaction amongst newly trained practitioners, workshop leaders, and members of the water quality community helped foster a cohesive cohort of individuals which can advocate powerful cohort for proper implementation of molecular methods.

Lindmark, Camilla (2016).

One of the most promising directions in this direction is a panoramic view. The use of interactive control and high resolution allows you to realize the key advantage of such panoramic video - the effect of presence. Considering that medicine often uses expensive equipment, access to which is limited for development, as well as various new approaches and methods, for example, in surgical treatment, which must be demonstrated to acquire practical skills, it is advisable to use panoramic teaching video for these purposes.

Informal building acting, as “architectural acting” which is constructed of architecture and construction, takes the initiative in dealing with the in-sufficiency of the architectural environment in every social context, and concretely reveals various appearances that exist outside the mainstream culture. In the age of visualization and commercialization of architecture, informal building acting leads people to reflect the status of architects, the meaning of architecture, and the relationship between architecture and human-being, raising a question about the appropriateness of the building system nowadays. The study tends to use qualitative methods. Borneo Art Laboratory (Blab) is a platform that integrates aesthetics resources all over the world and attempts to encourage innovation of local cultures of Malaysia. At the beginning of the research, by participating in the process of informal building acting workshop which held by Blab, the difference in the way of generating buildings of formal and informal systems stimulates the researcher started to investigate the essence of architecture and define the purpose of this research: (1) Why we take architectural action (2) What does architectural acting reveal (3) The significance of architectural acting to actors. Second, the researcher uses case studies and analyses the document based on the concepts of Creation System and Wholeness proposed by Christopher Alexander, grasping the social implications of informal building acting. Third, by interviewing the organizer, the participants and the residents who participated in the workshop, the researcher try to clarify that why did they want to join the acting and what did they gain from the acting, to summarize the appeals made by this acting. In conclusion, (1) Architectural acting makes architecture become proactive. Professionals might be the initiators who mobilize architectural acting. (2) Architectural acting is a way to pursue wholeness that it retrieves the life experience which has been absent since Industrialization. (3) Architectural acting discovers the diversity of architecture that it allows the thinking of architecture not constrained by form but focuses on the response to the environment.

Nilsson, Linda. "Quality Management and process development from scratch: Improving laboratory capabilities in Assam, India." Thesis, 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-393548.

Full text
Abstract:
During the past ten years, the foreign direct investment in India has increased with 1828 percent which has led to more projects being initiated in India to improve the livestock industry. The World Bank is the foremost entity in such investments and an issue arises when translating western theories for project management in new cultures. Because of this, development projects tend to stagnate and become inefficient since project goals and templates cannot be applied. Previous studies conducted in Africa have created successful methods called SLMTA to make projects and processes more efficient. SLMTA is a framework to improve the capability and accreditation in laboratory environment. Total Quality Management is one of the methods used in this framework. This study examines how Total Quality Management and process mapping can improve the capability of a laboratory in Guwahati, Assam, India. The underlying theories of this study derives from project management and total quality management where role definition, project triangle, project process, process management and the pareto principle are used. The study is supported by methods from total quality management such as process mapping, affinity diagram, relationship diagram, and process decision program chart. The findings from the study indicate that the development project of the laboratory in central Guwahati is shaped as a project process where project management and process development are implemented in parallel which impairs the efficiency. The study also shows cultural knowledge is a key aspect to create efficient projects and processes in development countries. Finally, the study finds that culturally adapted quality management tools, process mapping and project management are vital for improved efficiency in laboratory environment.

Abstract:
AbstractThe voluntary and community sector (VCS) is a key player in the support of prisoners and ex-prisoners in the English and Welsh criminal justice system. Organisational learning and innovation is urgently required in this sector to adapt to the current political and economic environment. The chapter describes exploratory efforts to introduce participatory methods drawn from Change Laboratory Methods and Clinics of Activity within a local VCS organisation that would help (re)build dialogue between stakeholders with the aim of promoting organisational learning and innovation. The intervention comprised an ethnographic phase of observing the staff, interviews with 19 key stakeholders, and a final developmental workshop with the staff. The analysis of these data by the researcher (first author) provided insight into the experience of mentors working in the voluntary sector as well as providing a trigger for dialogue in a subsequent workshop that used these data to establish dialogue between staff. These served as dialogical artefacts, introducing micro-dramas in the form of selected user stories. These dialogical artefacts triggered diverse reactions and analyses by the various participants, highlighting different elements than those anticipated by the researcher. We discuss the different readings of our research data by the researcher and staff members, presenting these two contrasting perspectives, and the implications this has for workplace development methods.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter presents the COLAB model for promoting organisational learning and innovation with potential application in criminal justice-related organisations. We describe this model as a toolkit that built on the Change Laboratory model of workplace transformation but one augmented with the beneficial components of Activity Clinics, Boundary Crossing Workshops and Codesign methods and developed within the criminal justice context. Limitations and future directions for the model are discussed.

Abstract:
For many metrology laboratories, the management system used to track and schedule the daily work is critical to the success of the laboratory. Many labs, if not most, inevitably purchase software from a commercial provider as a means to have a calibration management system in place. A primary concern with the purchase of typical software is the onerous reality that the software systems must be installed on each and every computer or at best served to every computer from a central server.

Abstract:
0.1 In recent years the attitude of the European Commission (EC) and of the Governments of the European countries, toward accreditation has changed such that it is now regarded as a national authority function, to be conducted in the absence of competition. Each European Union (EU)member state appoints a sole national accreditation body operating generally only within its national borders.0.2 Under the provisions of the European co-operation for Accreditation [2] Multi Lateral Agreement (EA MLA) [3] the European accreditation bodies now cooperate to ensure that laboratories are accredited by the accreditation body of the economy in which they are established. The European accreditation bodies do not compete in Europe and the work of any laboratory is assessed by the accreditation body local to the site concerned. This underpins the MLA by demonstrating the equivalence of the work of the accreditation bodies. It further ensures the growth and development of the accreditation bodies in the newer, smaller economies of the European Union.0.3 The author will explain the background, the legislation and the measures taken to serve the needs of laboratories including the multi-national laboratory owners and their customers. He will describe the benefits and the difficulties of implementing this regime and will include a brief discussion on “legal entities” as featured in the ISO/IEC 17000 series of accreditation standards as this often crucially affects the available choices for a European accreditation applicant.
