Abstract:
The approach to microbial detection in patients who present to acute settings should be focused and should aim to result in clinically significant findings while minimizing the chances of a missed diagnosis or missed complications related to a patient’s existing disease burden. Judicious selection of laboratory tests, efficient sample collection, and laboratory reporting are all important considerations. This chapter provides general guidelines for the initial evaluation of potential microbial infections in patients presenting to the Emergency Department (ED). In some cases, the diagnosis will remain uncertain during the patient’s stay, but diagnostic testing initiated in the ED may be beneficial for the inpatient or outpatient team and the future care of the patient.

Abstract:
One of the more surprising developments in the performance of Shakespeare across England over the past decade is the number of puppets who’ve appeared in the casting, sometimes in productions made for children (Macbeth at Little Angel; The Tempest, Little Angel/RSC); sometimes in productions made for adults (A Midsummer Night’s Dream at both Bristol Old Vic/Handspring and Krymov Laboratory; Propeller’s Richard III designed by Michael Pavelka). This chapter examines seven productions to give a sense of the variety of puppet performances on offer and to discover something about the effect of casting puppets: what puppets do, what they bring to performance, and how they act upon Shakespeare to make audiences ‘see new’, see differently. Through its discoveries, it makes a stab at theorizing how puppets behaves in the field of representation on postmodern Shakespearean stages and identifies ‘genealogies of performance’ that connect the puppets with their performances.

Abstract:
This chapter describes misperceptions of light Occasionally, nonuniform illumination such as a cast shadow, shading, or a spotlight appears to be paint or stain, or even a familiar object: in short, light appears to be “material.” Artists have for a long time been interested in how people distinguish material from illumination in their search for ways to depict shadows and shading, and vision scientists have devoted much effort to understanding how vision distinguishes material from illumination using carefully crafted laboratory stimuli. In this chapter examples are described from the natural visual world as well as from art. The chapter argues that such misperceptions are rational interpretations made by vision when the normal rules for the occurrence of spatially nonuniform illumination are violated. Concepts covered include terminology. Mach card, Hering’s shadow illusion, the Gelb effect, shadow art illusion, chromatic shadow illusion, and shadows that appear as objects.

Morosanu, Gabriela Adina. La dynamique hydro-sédimentaire du bassin de la rivière Jiu : approche systémique et multi-échelle. Editura Universitara, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.5682/9786062812034.

Abstract:
The present book, titled “The Hydro-sedimentary dynamics of the Jiu River Watershed. A systemic and multi-scale approach” sets about to investigate the dynamics of liquid and solid flows in a challenging watershed represented by the Jiu River Basin. The Jiu River (with a length of 339 km) is one of the main tributaries of the Danube in its Romanian sector, and its watershed stretches over an area of 10,080 km2, in SW Romania. Jiu River Basin is defined by complex geographical features, determined by a variety of natural and socio-economic factors. From an economic standpoint, the element that makes Jiu’s watershed stand out among other comparable rivers is the presence and exploitation of coal in its upper sector (bituminous coal) and middle sector (lignite), as these activities have left their mark on the quality of the water and the quantity and origins of fine sediments. In this study, we relied upon the existence of coal resources in order to investigate the hydro-sedimentary dynamics in the Jiu River Basin and identify the fine sediment sources, by performing an analysis of coal particles found in the fine sediments, which was carried out through different laboratory methods.
