Abstract:
Proliferation of CSR quality certification programs can be analysed within theories of mimicry. Some firms use third-party quality certificates to signal their CSR practices to consumers accurately. These firms and consumers benefit from few, simple, recognized, reliable labels. Other firms use competing or own-brand labels to signal deceptively, gaining competitive advantage without compliance costs. Unreliable labels act as mimics to dupe consumers. If consumers cannot determine which labels are misleading, they ignore them all. Within ecological theories of mimicry, this is known as aggressive reverse Brouwerian automimicry. CSR-label research has a different naming tradition, and this sector-scale effect could be called a rotkäppchen effect, analogous to program-scale groucho and firm-scale goldilocks effects. It is testable by analysing mimicry mechanisms or predicted patterns.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to use a unique, hand-collected data set of Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved products to understand the effect of lobbying on the product market. The authors gather total 86,462 FDA labels including drug patents, drugs, pre-market approvals and medical devices and test the relationship between lobbying and future firms’ product submissions. Design/methodology/approach Using a sample of 86,462 FDA labels including drug patents, drugs, pre-market approvals and medical devices, the authors test the effect of lobbying on a firm’s future product submissions using survival analysis, logit, difference-in-differences and propensity score matching techniques. Findings The authors find lobbying firms experience an increase in the number of medical products approved. However, increased number of FDA labeling comes at the cost of product failure. The authors document that lobbying increases product recalls when responsible firms are associated with higher market withdrawals. Originality/value This study contributes to both the management literature on corporate lobbying and product recalls. Additionally, the study reveals the connection between pharmaceutical lobbying and firm value.

Abstract:
In this paper, we look at denim production in three different factories in Punjab, Pakistan. We map the manufacturing process for a standard pair of denim jeans produced for an international retailer. We asked three factories of different scales and proximities to the technological frontier to stitch, finish and wash an identical pair of jeans. These firms included a large-scale exporter with established links to a major multinational brand, a medium exporter with links to regional European labels and a small producer selling primarily to the domestic market. Timing the operations ourselves, we find that the stitching time of the large-scale exporter is about one-third less than that of the medium exporter and about half the stitching time of the small firm. Of the three firms, only the large exporter pays wages based strictly on standard minute value – the time expected to complete an operation. The two smaller firms pay piece rates that reflect the market rates paid for individual operations by firms throughout the sector. Even without increases in stitching efficiency, the two smaller firms could reduce their stitching costs by 30–50 percent if they were able to switch to paying wages based on stitching times. We also calculate the labor cost savings that the two smaller firms could accrue by adopting some of the more advanced equipment used by the large exporter, along with lower piece rates. Of these, the most reasonable investment would be in better loop-making machines; the cost of equipment could be recuperated by producing 325,000–500,000 garments, which for the medium firm is four to eight months’ production at current levels. However, piece rates are entrenched and, if sticky, could reduce the incentives for firms to adopt labor-saving technologies.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to investigate the role of certification in providing information and reducing market inefficiencies when the “certification process is imperfect”. In the setting, eco-labels imperfectly signal environmental product quality to consumers where the error in the process of certification could be either Type 1 or Type 2 error. The paper examines firms' incentive to get certified, equilibrium quantities and profits. The authors use perfect Bayesian equilibrium concept for the analysis. They then examine conditions for separating and pooling equilibrium to exist and welfare implications of certification process. Design/methodology/approach The paper uses a vertical product differentiated model where firms are competing in quantities. Consumers are unable to observe the environmental quality of the product. To signal the product quality to consumers, firms may adopt certification by a third party. Using a framework where certification process is imperfect, the paper derives conditions for Perfect Bayesian separating and pooling equilibrium to exist. Findings The paper shows that the existence of separating and pooling equilibrium depends on the certification fee. A separating equilibrium, where one firm seeks certification and other firm does not seek certification exists for an intermediate value of certification fee. A pooling equilibrium, where both firms seek certification, exists only when the certification fee is sufficiently small. The paper shows conditions for the certification fee for which welfare will be higher under separating equilibrium as compared to pooling equilibrium and analyses welfare implications for subsidy policy for the certification fee. Originality/value The paper contributes to the literature by examining the role of labelling under imperfect certification.

Abstract:
This paper examines the link between industrial production and the sentiment expressed in natural language survey responses from U.S. manufacturing firms. We compare several natural language processing (NLP) techniques for classifying sentiment, ranging from dictionary-based methods to modern deep learning methods. Using a manually labeled sample as ground truth, we find that deep learning models partially trained on a human-labeled sample of our data outperform other methods for classifying the sentiment of survey responses. Further, we capitalize on the panel nature of the data to train models which predict firm-level production using lagged firm-level text. This allows us to leverage a large sample of "naturally occurring" labels with no manual input. We then assess the extent to which each sentiment measure, aggregated to monthly time series, can serve as a useful statistical indicator and forecast industrial production. Our results suggest that the text responses provide information beyond the available numerical data from the same survey and improve out-of-sample forecasting; deep learning methods and the use of naturally occurring labels seem especially useful for forecasting. We also explore what drives the predictions made by the deep learning models, and find that a relatively small number of words associated with very positive/negative sentiment account for much of the variation in the aggregatesentiment index.

Abstract:
Modern markets can be seen as complex systems of relationships where stakeholders are able to influence the firms’ decision-making processes and their value creation processes. Modern businesses should adopt a broader perspective in order to not focus their actions only on maximize economic performance, but to design them considering even their social and environmental impacts on the system as a whole. Firms have to respond to the stakeholders’ expectations as a way to obtain the legitimacy needed to create a beneficial environment that will help them in creating a positive effect out of their system of relations, without violating the social contract tying together all the actors in a given system. It follows that, when companies can effectively communicate to their systems’ actors how they are following the principles of sustainability and prove that their actions are socially responsible, they can get several advantages. One of the way companies must accomplish this feat is to ask third parties to certify their actions in order to be able to print on their products one of the various Ethical Labels. Using these labels to mark their products can be a tool to influence the consumer to buy from the firm over the competitors, leveraging on a higher legitimacy. In this paper, we have studied the evolution of the practice of non-financial disclosure trough ethical labels that 14 coffee brands, both in Italy and in England, as a way to understand how, in different markets they have changed over a 5-year time.

Abstract:
Purpose – The aim of this paper is to explore the marketing strategies and tools used by W&R Jacob & Co. in the first four decades of the twentieth century. Design/methodology/approach – This paper is based on close analysis of W&R Jacob & Co. labels and other primary material supported by secondary sources. Findings – The paper explores the company's initial focus on the development of an export market and their competition with similar firms in England for that business. It reveals the ways in which the firm contributed to the development of product naming and labelling conventions within the biscuit industry in this period. Labelling and product presentation strategies are examined to show methods of origination that coped with a prolific rate of introduction of new lines. Political change in Ireland in the 1920s and 1930s imposed limits on Jacob's markets and precipitated a reorientation of labelling strategies. Originality/value – The paper is based on extensive original research and makes a solid contribution to the understanding of new product development and marketing strategies within the biscuit industry in the first four decades of the twentieth century. It also furthers understanding of the effects of Irish Free State policies on export industry.

Águas, Ana Sofia Nunes do Carmo. "Eucalyptus globulus Labill. regeneration from seeds in Portugal´s mainland." Doctoral thesis, ISA/UL, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.5/18326.

Abstract:
Doutoramento em Engenharia Florestal e dos Recursos Naturais - Instituto Superior de Agronomia /UL
Eucalyptus globulus Labill. is a plant species native to SE Australia, Tasmania and adjacent islands. It was introduced in Portugal in the mid-19th century. In 2005/06, it was the most abundant tree species in 23% of the afforested area in Portugal’s mainland. Forests dominated by this species are one of the most fire-prone forest types in Portugal. This thesis was aimed to contribute to a better understanding of the naturalization process in Portugal’s mainland, with a special focus on the role of fire in this process. A multiscale approach was used to address the problem. Natural regeneration of E. globulus from seeds occurs in every natural region of the territory and may reach high densities in some locations. Spatial distribution of both wildling occurrence and density is not uniform on national (mainland), regional, local, and stand scales. The existence of seed sources (reproductive trees) is of primary importance. Climatic and soil conditions affect the broad scale distribution of this regeneration and its performance. Site quality and forest management are fundamental on a local scale. Fire clearly plays a relevant role, inducing seed release from burnt trees, providing safe microsites for plant recruitment and development, and allowing for the establishment of plants in the mid-term. Moreover, litter charring enables the early development of E. globulus in otherwise toxic conditions. Maximum wildling densities observed were 0.3 plants m-2 and 9.9 plants m-2 inside unburnt and burnt plantations, respectively. Portuguese plantations, from a region with nationally moderate levels of seminal regeneration, had mean wildling densities 3.1 times higher than Australian plantations, from seven regions either inside or outside the native range. In summary, cultivated trees are able to produce offspring, which grows, establishes and may produce seeds next to parent trees, in many parts of Portugal’s mainland. Therefore, naturalization is in progress and widespread in this territory, and fire does facilitate it

Abstract:
This thesis consists of three chapters and is organized in two parts. Each part deals with a particular theoreticalissue of firms' private information. The first part of the thesis is devoted to the architecture of global warming policies and firms' private information. The first chapter analyses which global agreement can be implemented in presence of two-tiers asymmetry of information coming from both countries and domestic firms. We impose several key constraints on the design of such a regulatory policy: heterogeneity of countries, two-tier private information both at domestic and international levels and full participation. We derive the optimal first and second-best agreement. It is shown that the optimal global agreement does not always entail a uniform price for carbon. In presence of domestic firm's private information, the second-best agreement entails prices for carbon that differ from one country to another. We thereby highlight the failure of the Law of One Carbon Price. In the second part of the thesis that comprises two chapters, I study the interaction between two communication tools --- price signaling and third-party disclosure --- that firms may use to reveal their private information to consumers. The second chapter examines a third-party disclosure that consists in a certification handled by a middleman: a certifier. A monopolist has the choice between paying for that disclosure or using price to signal quality. The strategic certifier is either a for-profit entity or an entity that defends the monopolist' interest. I first show that the structure of audit costs incurred by the middlemen affects the type of monopolist that chooses certification. I then show that the characteristics of the certification ---audit probability and certification fee--- vary with the motivation of the strategic middleman. More specifically, a for-profit certifier, whenever it is possible, will not audit and put the highest feasible fee while a certifier defending the monopolist will audit with a certain probability and select the lowest possible fee. This chapter thereby contributes to a better understanding of the certification industry. The last chapter studies a third-party disclosure that consists of two steps: certification and labeling. It involves two middlemen --- the certifier and the owner of the label --- and it includes a certification fee and a price for the label. A monopolist has the choice between paying for that disclosure or signaling quality through price.I derive the disclosure when the certifier is a for-profit private entityand the label owner is private either a for-profit entity or an entity that defends the monopolist' interest. I show that, when the label owner defends the monopolist, the price of that label and the sharing of the surplus depend on the nature of certifiers' competition. In particular, I find that, a label owner defending the monopolist in order to prevent the certifier from capturing the surplus should favor competition between certifiers or, when that is not possible, monetize the label

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the recycling of polyethylene terephthalate and its subsequent processing into the form of a regranulate meeting the parameters required for food use. A brief description of recycling technology, PET flake quality rating and input material contamination is provided. Additionally, legislation regarding recycling for food purposes is discussed and regranulation technologies are described. The suitability of these technologies for processing specific flake samples has been confirmed. In the experimental part, differences in the regranulate samples are compared using DSC and FT-IR. It has been found that there are no major differences between food quality samples. Tests were carried out on 200 PET bottles (bottle, label), on which the input material was divided into 16 groups. Groups that are unsuitable for recycling with this technology was defined. In addition, contaminants of the final product were examined. Their approximate composition was determined and the relationship between the labels of the bottles at the inlet and the impurities at the outlet was found. Appropriate solutions have been proposed to reduce this contamination

Abstract:
This present research explores the valuing process of art cinema through two markets, created mainly by the movie theater label “Art et Essai” in France and “Movie Theater for Art films” in South Korea. It traces the economic, political and practical inventions, which enabled quality cinema, or auteur cinema, to be formed and to gradually define the very notion of quality. Inspired by pragmatic ideas, this study addresses the collective experience of the audience that leads to the distinction between “going to the cinema” and “seeing a movie”. This comparative historical research of two different countries which have strong traditions of “quality” cinema reveals the importance of the relationship between the socio- economic construction of quality and the various dimensions invented by movie industry participants, who are interested not only in screening films, but also and notably in attracting spectators and creating their audiences.Despite the similarity of some general figures of their industry such as national films’ market share and cinema admissions per capita, they differ in three ways: the beginning and the development process of the quality film market; government subsidies for art houses by means of quality labels and their impact on the identity formation of quality films in the market; and finally the landscape of art houses today. Analyses of each country presented in turn, because of their great difference, are however following the same path: starting from the presentation of enlightening early stage of the film industry and of the first government intervention against the American invasion; entering into details about art film market creation, subsidy policy changes and implementation of different modes of distribution in movie theater market; and concluding with the present situation

The topic of global environmental protection is paid attention to day by day, since the leader all around the world signed Rio Declaration and Implementing 21 Agenda together in Brazil Rio Earth Summit of Rio de Janeiro in 1992. The environmental consciousness of the height makes the entrepreneur expect to undertake the responsibility of environmental protection. In the global investigation at the end of 2002, the total amount of enterprises in Taiwan that have already obtained ISO 14000 environmental administrative system authentication rank the 15th in the whole world, only lag behind Japan, China, Korea S. in the whole Asia. But if consider the total amount of enterprises in the whole country, the enterprises rate that our country have already obtained authentication has been already comparable to Japan of the world. So this research adopts Data Envelopment Analysis, Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test, and Tobit regression model to analysis the listed companies in our country that have already obtained ISO 14000 environmental administrative system authentication, whether there are apparent differences in its performance of obtaining ISO 14000 before and after verifying. The result of this research can be found obviously, no matter pollution is prevented or resources are saved, ISO 14000 environmental administrative system has very great essence contribution in environmental protection. Make use of this, we will understand further that every enterprise promotes benefit that ISO will be verified, and propose the suggestion on the management tactics.

Abstract:
The firm of 2018 must not only remain agile in its innovative offerings, but must also recognise trends of peer-to-peer sharing, which begs the question: where do utility providers envision their business models amidst new demands to remain innovative in the new wave of collaborative consumption? If providing consumers with products via innovative services is the new currency upon which a firm is to be valued, then the extent of potential streams of innovation research available to a firm ought never be underestimated. Through a comprehensive analysis of the firm and the DNA of its open innovation ecosystem as well as a thorough investigation into the objectives driving Living Labs, we begin to discuss the feasibility of the Living Lab as a potential addition to the ecosystem of the firm in context.

Full text
Abstract:
This master’s thesis reflects upon the place of analogue cinema in the new digital era of film, particularly within the avant-garde. The first chapter explores from a historical and theoretical point of view the current cinematographic trends, i.e., the status of celluloid in the context of its disappearance, whether it is as a projecting medium or at the production and postproduction stage. Facing an industry which encourages the obsolescence of celluloid (but continues to attempt to reproduce its aesthetic through digital means), there exists filmmaking collectives which continue to defend the use of film in their practice. The second chapter reveals the pluralism of cinematographic micro-laboratories which offer a form of resistance to digital domination. In order to understand the paradigm shift which occured during the 1950s and 1970s within the avant-garde we will also examine the cooperatives movement such as the Film-Maker’s Cooperative in New York and the London Filmmaker’s Coop. The cooperatives movement was above all searching for artistic autonomy, whereas comtemporary collectives dedicated to celluloid tend to ensure the preservation of an endangered practice. The third chapter proposes a case study on the Montreal film-collective Double Negative. This chapter relates the history of the collective (creation of the group during their studies at Concordia University), the specificities of their filmography (particularly their musical collaborations) as well as their devotion to the diffusion and projection of films on celluloid. Like other similar groups (Process Reversal, l’Abominable, Filmwerplaats, to name a few) the Double Negative collective paves the way to ensure the survival of the celluloid medium in cinema.

Abstract:
AbstractAcademics, pundits, and policymakers have recently called for a stronger governmental role in the economy to tackle social issues such as inequality and grand challenges like global warming. Despite a general recognition among economists and management scholars that government efforts to guide and control innovation or subsidize private entrepreneurs have failed to yield results, these calls also describe an entrepreneurial state in which bureaucrats, not entrepreneurs, direct not only basic research but also applied technological development. Building on the notions of economic competence and ownership competence we argue that even well-intentioned and strongly motivated public actors lack the ability to manage the process of innovation, especially under Knightian uncertainty. As stewards of resources owned by the public, government bureaucrats do not exercise the ultimate responsibility that comes with ownership. Moreover, government ownership of firms and labs and government intervention in the management of privately owned assets hampers the competitive process of putting ownership of innovative firms and projects in the hands of individuals and groups with higher levels of ownership ability. We suggest that ownership competence differs systematically between public and private actors, particularly around innovation, with important implications for innovation policy.

Abstract:
This chapter investigates different new hybrid organizations like the public-private partnership in the social and solidarity economy. Different innovations are shaking the traditional borders between the economic actors, the public, the private, the profit and non-profit sectors. New form of firms emerges with several shareholders and mixed economic structure. A financial mechanism, the Social Impact Bonds, is also supported by French public authorities. New hybrid forms of innovation like Living Labs are defined as user-centered, open innovation ecosystems based on systematic user co-creation approach, where different partners (public, private…) cocreate a common solution and common value. These different forms share as common aim the general interest and better social results. The issue of governance is central to guarantee the general interest and the Commons, namely having rules and actors governing the commons together with democratic and shared participation. Thanks to a clearly shared and collaborative (Ostrom, 1990) governance, these new hybrid forms also allow for a better stimulation of the economic, social and territorial dimensions within the innovation framework. We define a new cooperative mode of governance, which completes the hybrid arrangements typology of Oliver Williamson (1991). The Living Lab example is in the line of Elinor Ostrom; it allows going beyond the tragedy of the commons. The individual interest hands over to common value. The emerging governance model is based on citizens’ involvement and guarantees success and protection of the commons.

Abstract:
This chapter seeks to explore the concept of eco-labels as a method used by firms to promote products with high levels of sustainability performance. The authors examine what this means to the firms involved in terms of implementation and impact on profit. However, they also examine what can happen when a firm fails to live up to the required standards, whether these standards are above required performance or even the minimum mandated performance. The authors use the case of the automotive sector to demonstrate several categories of failure and provide a concluding remark with several pathways forward for future research in this topic.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract A Round Robin study involving 19 coating suppliers and independent laboratories was conducted on tensile testing of thermally sprayed coatings to determine the accuracy and consistency of the tensile data among the participating labs and within a lab. One coating system (NiCrAl) and two adhesive types (film vs. liquid epoxy) were used. The results showed the average tensile strengths for the coating system using the liquid epoxy systems (EC2086/EC2214) were consistently higher than the average values which resulted using the film epoxy system (FMIOOO). However, less scatter in the results was observed when the FMIOOO film epoxy was used.

Abstract:
Academic entities have the ability to assemble resources and form ‘local labs’ able to creatively address complex technical problems. This paper describes academic partnerships with professional practice that offer responsive materials design expertise not available in many architectural firms. The following projects are funded by grants, gifts, and consultation mechanisms with architectural firms during the Request for Qualifications (RFQ) and the Request for Proposals (RFP) phase in competitive design solicitations. The RFQ and the RFP mechanisms are high-value low-risk means for architectural firms to add research and development capabilities to their project team. Example are given of two collaborative projects that have brought practice-based research to the architectural office and brought practical experience to students.

Abstract:
Arg-Gly-Asp-Ser (RGDS) coating is one of effective methods to improve the cell adhesive property of the scaffold surface. However, it is difficult to regulate the RGDS quantity and distribution, and to visualize RGDS distribution. The purpose of this study was to develop a surface treatment technique that the RGDS quantity can be regulated with the ultraviolet rays irradiation and the RGDS distribution can be visualized with the fluorescence. P(MMA-g-ANP-RGDS) and P(HEMA-g-ANP-RGDS) were respectively synthesized by radical copolymerization of methylmethacrylate (MMA) and 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA) with peptide-macromonomer containing photo-labile linker (3-amino-3-(2-nitrophenyl)propionic acid (ANP)) and RGDS. Each polymer film was produced by using spin-coater, and then ultraviolet rays was irradiated to the each film through the glass mask with three different ultraviolet rays transmissivity of 0 %, 30 % and 60 %. In both polymer films, the RGDS quantity can be regulated by ultraviolet rays irradiation, and the luminance decreased same as the RGDS quantity. Adherent osteoblast-like cells were not observed on P(HEMA-g-ANP-RGDS) film, but the number of adherent osteoblast-like cells was increased with increasing the RGDS quantity on the P(MMA-g-ANP-RGDS) film. In conclusion, we accomplished to develop the surface treatment technique with P(MMA-g-ANP-RGDS) to regulate and visualize the RGDS quantity and distribution.

Abstract:
Abstract On 13 may 2000 an explosion occurred in a fireworks storage and trading facility in Enschede, the Netherlands. Twenty-two people were killed and some 900 injured. The material damage was approximately 400 MEuro. Immediately after the accident an investigation was started into the causes of the accident. Special attention was given to the unexpected violence of the explosion. The investigative committee installed by the Government used results and advice of domestic and international institutes to obtain results. It appeared that the firm had a long history of violating permits, that the city had legalised these violations and that inspectorates and state institutions were not aware of the hazards thus created. Especially the importance of the correct classification of the fireworks and of the storage of the correct types and quantities went unnoticed. As a result prior to May 13 2000 most of the fireworks stored at the premises were more powerful than the labels indicated and in fact a significant part of the storage was mass-explosive contrary to the current permit.

Abstract:
On July 18, 2001, a train carrying hazardous materials derailed and caught fire in the Howard Street railroad tunnel in Baltimore, Maryland. Due to this accident, questions were raised about the performance of spent nuclear fuel transportation casks under severe fire conditions, similar to those experienced in the Baltimore tunnel fire. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) evaluates the performance of spent fuel transportation casks under accident conditions. Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 71 section 73(c)(4), (10 CFR 71.73(c)(4)) requires that transportation packages used to ship radioactive material must be designed to resist an engulfing fire of a 30 minute duration and prevent release of radioactive material to the environment. The staff of the NRC, in cooperation with the National Transportation Safety Board, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Pacific Northwest National Labs and the Center for Nuclear Waste Regulatory Analysis, have undertaken an analysis to determine the thermal conditions present in the Howard Street tunnel fire, as well as analyze the effects that such a fire would have on a spent fuel transportation cask. This paper describes the analytic models used in the assessment and presents a discussion of the results.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper presents the results of a study on the ways that innovation and productivity are connected in the Colombian manufacturing and service industry. Using data from the Manufacturing Innovation Survey (2007-2008) and the Service Innovation Survey (2008-2009), the paper addresses two main questions: first, whether patterns of innovations differ among manufacturing and services industries, and second, whether service firms innovate, and, if so, whether their innovation approach differs from that of manufacturing. The main findings are (1) that service firms engage in process innovation, both technological and nontechnological; (2) that the probability of undertaking innovation increases with investment in R&D labs and firm size, regardless of the industry; and (3) that the more intensive the investment in innovation, the higher the probability of introducing innovations. The econometric results show that the response is higher in manufacturing than in services. Finally, labor productivity is greatly enhanced by the introduction of innovations, although surprisingly the estimated coefficient shows that the effect is larger for service industries than for manufacturing industries.
