Abstract:

Abstract:
Noise, noise pollution in Algeria :Linguistic and societal aspect The sound as a noise nuisance usually induces a public health issue among deaf specialists because it affects the health of the ears. One of the most well-known consequences of hearing discomfort, or even deafness, is the difficulty of communication in society. Similarly, the impact on language, in general, and on cognitive and linguistic functions, in particular, can disrupt the level of performance of essential learning such as reading and writing by confusing phonetically similar sounds for some children from primary school onwards, and that may become a real school health issue. To understand such a situation and analyse the impact of noise on learning, it is important to identify its occurrences and cultural representation. This article discusses various aspects of noise to unveil some language and societal implications. The results of this research showed that in Algeria, preschool programs address sensory education, and education in sounds, music, and noises. we believe that it would be important to instill in children from an early age the harmful effect of noise in involving family life which, through ignorance, causes noise pollution and creates an awareness of noise among its members. The recommendations are numerous and require more investigation, yet it is a topic that is less discussed in Algeria while it is an integral part of the daily lives of families, teachers, and learners regardless of their level of education. In this study, it is difficult for us to determine a noise culture specific to Algerian society. However, the people interviewed reported certain annoying behaviors such as speaking loudly and living daily with the noise of music, construction and slamming of doors, produced by oneself, at home, and in the neighbourhood.A research carried out within the framework of a national project by a team of linguists, didacticians, speech therapists, neurobiologists, and doctors, would encourage us to develop these first global observations in such a way as to warn Algerian society of linguistic, psychological, communication and environmental risks. and health, in the face of noise pollution.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
ABSTRACTNoise pollution is one of the consequences of the industrial revolution. Following a change in production methods, the number of inhabitants in cities increased, which resulted that, then mostly naturally with anthropogenic biases soundscape was changing by introducing new sounds, all of mechanical, from technological innovation generated by man kind. Today, noise pollution, flooding the city, forced educational institutions to think of a sound re-education. The soundscape, proposed by musician and music educator Raymond Murray Schafer concept becomes a basic tool in this process of teaching and learning and auditory re-cognition of the world around us.RESUMENLa contaminación acústica es una de las secuelas de la revolución industrial.

Abstract:

Abstract:
There are three astronomical observatories in Mexico working on research programs. The oldest one is located at Tonantzintla, Puebla; the largest is at San Pedro Martir, Baja California; and the youngest, not yet in full operation, at Cananea, Sonora. The one at Tonantzintla suffers, by far, the largest light pollution problems; that at San Pedro Martir has the darkest skies but is relatively close to regions of potential touristic and mining developments. In this paper we summarize the existing and potential polluting problems arising from manmade light sources near those observatories, and suggest some possible steps to be taken in order to minimize their adverse effects on astronomical observations.

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractNoise monitoring had been performed inside and around PUC Minas Betim in order to test the hypothesys that surrounding noise pollution is not associated with academic activities. 144 (59%) of 244 external measurements exceeded legal benchmark values, in which 21% also exceeded World Health Organization 65 dB(A) threshold for health damage. On the other hand, 162 internal measurements showed results below the recommended limit. Although this pollution scenario is recurrent, the amount of non-conform measurements and noise amplitude rise during class times when compared to vacation periods. This rising is not however due the activities performed inside the campus but the associated increment on people and vehicles traffic around the university during class time.Keyword: Monitoring; Noise pollution; University; Betim.

Abstract:
Groundwater metal pollution is a major concern in mining areas. This study proposes a new addition to the DRASTIC method (DRASTIC+Lu) to assess groundwater vulnerability to metal pollution in mining areas by combining remote sensing (to locate metal pollution sources) and the DRASTIC index. The study was performed in a mining area in northwestern Mexico showing current and historical mining activities. The proposed methodology allowed locating known and unknown sources of metal pollution (mining tailings, active/inactive mines, and areas with exposed natural geochemical anomalies). Generally, the addition of the land use (Lu) parameter causes not only a decrease in vulnerability but also highlights very high vulnerable areas and identifies new ones in the vicinity of metal pollution sources. This result is relevant to focus stewardship efforts in very high vulnerable areas. Results allowed to identify the need to implement protection and restauration measures in the Sonora river channel and its vicinity. The proposed method could be implemented in other mining areas around the world –at a low cost– to locate unknown metal pollution sources and clearly identify very high vulnerable areas that play a key role in the protection of groundwater resources.

Abstract:
Abstract Vehicular traffic is pointed out as a major source of urban noise pollution today. In this paper, we evaluated the precision of a new probabilistic model for urban traffic noise analyses. The proposed model adopts real sound signals and the Monte Carlo method in simulations. Probability distributions of traffic variables were obtained in-situ on two urban roads. The acoustic signals and corresponding energies of single pass-by of vehicles were obtained usingsound signal recordings on test tracks under free-field condition. The model simulates vehicular traffic noise on urban roads in free or in trafficlight controlled flow and considers the influence of bus stops. The proposed model calculates different acoustic descriptors, such as Statistical sound levels (LA10 and LA90), Equivalent continuous sound level (LAeq), Trafficnoise index (TNI) and Noise pollution level (LNP). Furthermore, it allowsthe listening of simulated noise. The experimental results indicate that theproposed model is reliable and accurate for vehicular traffic noise prediction.

Abstract:
Biomonitoring of atmospheric pollution is an increasingly accepted practice. However, most existing biomonitors are usually epiphytic species from mesic environments. This work assessed the suitability of buffelgrass (Cenchrus ciliaris), an invasive C4 grass in northwestern Mexico, as a biomonitor, by means of the spatial distribution of the carbon and nitrogen content and isotopic signatures for grass samples collected from urban, agricultural, and natural areas throughout the state of Sonora. We found the highest tissue carbon content of 45.6% (on a dry weight basis) and highest nitrogen content of 3.31% for buffelgrass from the Yaqui Valley. We also found the lowest δ13C of −15.9‰, and the highest δ15N of 16.7‰ in the same region. In contrast, the lowest carbon and nitrogen content of 39.4 and 1.49% were found for Bahía de Kino and Río Sonora mountains, respectively. The lowest δ15N of 2.18‰ and the highest δ13C of −13.7‰ were measured for two remote locations. These results show the influence that pollutant emissions, including agriculture and transportation, have on elemental and isotopic composition of vegetation. Buffelgrass is most adequate for tracking carbon and nitrogen emissions in arid environments and for determining alterations on nitrogen soil reactions, as a first approximation for saturation.

Abstract:
This paper aims to investigate the impact on the physical and mental health of workers by the artificial environment, influenced by factors such as noise pollution, air pollution, water pollution, bullying, confinement, repetitive efforts, and seek ways to mitigate these factors can, by unbalancing the environment, contribute to the development of various diseases, already studied and published in several scientific articles. The relationships between health/mental illness and social vulnerability are very complex and require a series of reflections and contextualizations to be understood. The fact is that, in recent decades, the number of people exposed to traumatic events has increased significantly as various forms of violence engulf civilian populations worldwide, thus contributing to a persistent additional burden of disease, death and disability.

Abstract:
The possible effects on marine mammals and other marine organisms of sound from human (anthropogenic) sources have become subjects of increasing concern and controversy. In the late 1970s and 1980s, the sources of principal concern were seismic profiling, drilling, and related activities associated with offshore oil and gas development. In the last decade, much of the focus has shifted to activities conducted or supported by the U.S. Navy, most notably the Acoustic Thermometry of Ocean Climate Program, ship-shock tests, development and proposed use of low frequency active sonar to detect new classes of quiet submarines, and the stranding of beaked whales and other cetaceans in the Bahamas in March 2000 coincident with antisubmarine exercises involving use of mid-frequency tactical sonars. There has been substantial controversy concerning the possible impacts of these activities, and a number of law suits seeking to stop or restrict them. The Navy believes that the concerns are unwarranted and that the law suits have impeded its ability to meet its national defense responsibilities. Congress agreed and in the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2004 (Public Law 108-87) made two substantial changes to the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA): (1) it authorized the Secretary of Defense to exempt military readiness activities from the provisions of the MMPA governing the incidental taking of marine mammals; and (2) it added to the Act separate definitions of harassment to apply to such activities. These and other proposed changes to the MMPA could undermine the unique, precautionary or risk-averse philosophy of the Act. An alternative, two-step approach, advocated in this paper, would be to (a) revise the definition of harassment to clearly differentiate types and levels of behavioral disturbance likely to have, and not to have, biologically significant effects; and (b) add a general authorization for all incidental taking expected to have biologically insignificant effects, similar to the general authorization for marine mammal research expected to have biologically insignificant effects added to the MMPA in 1994.

Abstract:
Mining effluents were found to be the main source of pollution by heavy metals of the surface water in the San Pedro River in Sonora, Mexico. The overall objective of this study was to determine the biosorption of Zn, Cu, Mn, and Fe with yeasts isolated from San Pedro River in a continuous system. The tests conducted in two reactors packed with zeolite connected in series. The first reactor was inoculated mixing two yeasts species, and the effluent of the first reactor was fed to second reactor. Subsequently, the first reactor was fed with contaminated water of San Pedro River and effluent from this was the second reactor influent. After 40 days of the experiment a reduction of 81.5% zinc, 76.5% copper, manganese 95.5%, and 99.8% of iron was obtained. These results show that the selected yeasts are capable of biosorbing zinc, copper, manganese, and iron under these conditions.

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractBuffelgrass is a non-indigenous, invasive, C4 grass that was introduced throughout much of southern Texas, the Southwestern United States, and northern and central Mexico to improve degraded rangelands. The successful introduction and spread of buffelgrass follows a trajectory similar to that of other invasive C4 grasses in arid and semiarid ecosystems. In the Plains of Sonora of the Sonoran Desert (Mexico) buffelgrass is favored by widespread removal of native vegetation and seeding, but, why, following initial introduction, the species persists remains unclear. In this study, we addressed two concerns associated with buffelgrass invasion in the Plains of Sonora. We hypothesized that under arid rangeland conditions, buffelgrass outcompetes native herbaceous species (1) through rapid acquisition of limiting nutrients (here assumed to be nitrogen) and (2) under conditions with high nitrogen input. In summer 2002, a 2 by 2 factorial experiment was established with buffelgrass removal and nitrogen addition in both intact desert and converted buffelgrass grassland habitats. In winter 2003, we found that, regardless of habitat type, buffelgrass removal had a positive effect on abundance, biomass, and richness of native herbaceous species while addition of nitrogen, as urea (at 50 kg N ha−1yr−1 or 9.18 lbs N ac−1yr−1), and disturbance resulted in reduction in abundance and biomass. Nitrogen addition did not negatively alter buffelgrass cover. Nitrogen addition had the expected result of increasing initial, peak and total NO3 and NH4 mineralization with the exception of NO3 measures in intact desert. Removal of buffelgrass did not result in significant increases in soil NO3 or NH4 with the exception of peak NH4 in intact desert. Results of this study support observations that native herbaceous species are displaced by buffelgrass invasion and that nitrogen pollution will likely favor buffelgrass over the native herbaceous species in this ecosystem.
