Abstract:
AbstractPartial but significant localization along the line of sight (l.o.s.) of the contributions to the integrated zodiacal brightness can be achieved, without recourse to rash physical assumptions, if we focus on the two intersections between the l.o.s. and the terrestrial orbit. Then, there exists on the l.o.s. two other points or “nodes”, the contributions of which can be retrieved with outstandingly low uncertainty. The photometric results at these nodes (heliocentric change of scattering efficiency, backscattering phase function etc.) are highly reminiscent of previously ascertained features, and they encourage extensions to the polarimetric, the spectrometric and the radiometric cases. The salient results are, respectively: a positive radial gradient of local polarization degree; orbital velocities in excess over the keplerian ones, at least outside the earth’s orbit; the derivation of local temperatures from IRAS data.

Abstract. The new mission concept of microwave and infrared-laser occultation between low-Earth-orbit satellites (LMIO) is designed to provide accurate and long-term stable profiles of atmospheric thermodynamic variables, greenhouse gases (GHGs), and line-of-sight (l.o.s.) wind speed with focus on the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS). While the unique quality of GHG retrievals enabled by LMIO over the UTLS has been recently demonstrated based on end-to-end simulations, the promise of l.o.s. wind retrieval, and of joint GHG and wind retrieval, has not yet been analyzed in any realistic simulation setting. Here we use a newly developed l.o.s. wind retrieval algorithm, which we embedded in an end-to-end simulation framework that also includes the retrieval of thermodynamic variables and GHGs, and analyze the performance of both stand-alone wind retrieval and joint wind and GHG retrieval. The wind algorithm utilizes LMIO laser signals placed on the inflection points at the wings of the highly symmetric C18OO absorption line near 4767 cm−1 and exploits transmission differences from a wind-induced Doppler shift. Based on realistic example cases for a diversity of atmospheric conditions, ranging from tropical to high-latitude winter, we find that the retrieved l.o.s. wind profiles are of high quality over the lower stratosphere under all conditions, i.e., unbiased and accurate to within about 2 m s−1 over about 15 to 35 km. The wind accuracy degrades into the upper troposphere due to the decreasing signal-to-noise ratio of the wind-induced differential transmission signals. The GHG retrieval in windy air is not vulnerable to wind speed uncertainties up to about 10 m s−1 but is found to benefit in the case of higher speeds from the integrated wind retrieval that enables correction of wind-induced Doppler shift of GHG signals. Overall both the l.o.s. wind and GHG retrieval results are strongly encouraging towards further development and implementation of a LMIO mission.

Abstract:
We use data from 58 strong lensing events surveyed by the Sloan Lens ACS Survey to estimate the projected galaxy mass inside their Einstein radii by two independent methods: stellar dynamics and strong gravitational lensing. We perform a joint analysis of both estimates examining the galaxy-lens density profile (that we approximate by a power law), the anisotropy of the velocity distribution (represented by an effective constant parameter), and a possible line-of-sigh (l.o.s.) mass contamination (which is suggested by various independent works in the literature). For each model, a likelihood analysis is performed to find the parameters that produce the best agreement between the dynamical and lensing masses, and the parameter confidence levels. The Bayesian evidence is calculated to allow a comparison among the models. We find a degeneracy among the slope of the density profile, the anisotropy parameter and the l.o.s. mass contamination. For a density profile close to isothermal, a l.o.s. mass contamination of the order of a few percent is possible, being less probable with larger anisotropy.

Abstract:
Abstract We present the joint Chandra, XMM-Newton, and NuSTAR analysis of two nearby Seyfert galaxies, NGC 3081 and ESO 565-G019. These are the only two having Chandra data in a larger sample of 10 low-redshift (z ≤ 0.05), candidates Compton-thick (CT) Active Galactic Nuclei selected in the 15–150 keV band with Swift-BAT that were still lacking NuSTAR data. Our spectral analysis, performed using physically motivated models, provides an estimate of both the line-of-sight (l.o.s.) and average (N H,S ) column densities of the two torii. NGC 3081 has a Compton-thin l.o.s. column density N H,z = [0.58–0.62] × 1024 cm−2, but the N H,S , beyond the CT threshold (N H,S = [1.41–1.78] × 1024 cm−2), suggests a “patchy” scenario for the distribution of the circumnuclear matter. ESO 565-G019 has both CT l.o.s. and N H,S column densities (N H,z > 2.31 × 1024 cm−2 and N H,S > 2.57 × 1024 cm−2, respectively). The use of physically motivated models, coupled with the broad energy range covered by the data (0.6–70 keV and 0.6–40 keV, for NGC 3081 and ESO 565-G019, respectively) allows us to constrain the covering factor of the obscuring material, which is C TOR = [0.63–0.82] for NGC 3081, and C TOR = [0.39–0.65] for ESO 565-G019.

Abstract:
Context. Isolated local group (LG) dwarf galaxies have evolved most or all of their life unaffected by interactions with the large LG spirals and therefore offer the opportunity to learn about the intrinsic characteristics of this class of objects. Aims. Our aim is to explore the internal kinematic and metallicity properties of one of the three isolated LG early-type dwarf galaxies, the Tucana dwarf spheroidal. This is an intriguing system, as it has been found in the literature to have an internal rotation of up to 16 km s−1, a much higher velocity dispersion than dwarf spheroidals of similar luminosity, and a possible exception to the too-big-too-fail problem. Methods. We present the results of a new spectroscopic dataset that we procured from the Very Large Telescope (VLT) taken with the FORS2 instrument in the region of the Ca II triplet for 50 candidate red giant branch stars in the direction of the Tucana dwarf spheroidal. These yielded line-of-sight (l.o.s.) velocity and metallicity ([Fe/H]) measurements of 39 effective members that double the number of Tucana’s stars with such measurements. In addition, we re-reduce and include in our analysis the other two spectroscopic datasets presented in the literature, the VLT/FORS2 sample by Fraternali et al. (2009, A&A, 499, 121), and the VLT/FLAMES one from Gregory et al. (2019, MNRAS, 485, 2010). Results. Across the various datasets analyzed, we consistently measure a l.o.s. systemic velocity of 180 ± 1.3 km s−1 and find that a dispersion-only model is moderately favored over models that also account for internal rotation. Our best estimate of the internal l.o.s. velocity dispersion is 6.2−1.3+1.6 km s−1, much smaller than the values reported in the literature and in line with similarly luminous dwarf spheroidals; this is consistent with NFW halos of circular velocities < 30 km s−1. Therefore, Tucana does not appear to be an exception to the too-big-to-fail problem, nor does it appear to reside in a dark matter halo much more massive than those of its siblings. As for the metallicity properties, we do not find anything unusual; there are hints of the presence of a metallicity gradient, but more data are needed to pinpoint its presence.

Abstract:
Context. The gamma-ray bursts hosts (GRBHs) are excellent targets to study the extinction properties of dust and its effects on the global emission of distant galaxies. The dust extinction curve is measured along the GRB afterglow line of sight and the analysis of the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the host galaxy gives access to the global dust attenuation of the stellar light. Aims. In this pilot study we gather information on dust extinction in GRBHs to compare the properties of the extinction curve to those of the dust obscuration affecting the total stellar light of the host galaxy. Assuming the extinction curve to be representative of the dust properties, we aim to investigate which dust-stars geometries and local dust distribution in the inter stellar medium (ISM) can reproduce the observed attenuation curve. Methods. We selected a sample of 30 GRBs for which the extinction curve along the GRB afterglow line-of-sight (l.o.s.) is measured in the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) up to optical and we analysed the properties of the extinction curve as a function of the host galaxy properties. From these 30 GRBs, we selected seven GRBHs with a good rest-frame UV to near-infrared (NIR) spectral coverage for the host. The attenuation curve was derived by fitting the SEDs of the GRBH sample with the CIGALE SED fitting code. Different star formation histories (SFH) were studied to recover the star formation rates (SFR) derived using Hα luminosities. Implications for the dust-stars geometries in the ISM are inferred by a comparison with radiative transfer simulations. Results. The most extinguished GRBs are preferentially found in the more massive hosts and the UV bump is preferentially found in the most extinguished GRB l.o.s. Five out of seven hosts are best fitted with a recent burst of star formation, leading to lower stellar mass estimates than previously found. The average attenuation in the host galaxies is about 70% of the amount of extinction along the GRB l.o.s. We find a great variety in the derived attenuation curves of GRBHs, the UV slope can be similar, flatter or even steeper than the extinction curve slope. Half of the attenuation curves are consistent with the Calzetti attenuation law and there is evidence of a UV bump in only one GRBH. We find that the flatter (steeper) attenuation curves are found in galaxies with the highest (lowest) SFR and stellar masses. The comparison of our results with radiative transfer simulations leads to a uniform distribution of dust and stars in a very clumpy ISM for half the GRBHs and various dust-stars geometries for the second half of the sample.

Abstract:
Context. Dwarf galaxies found in isolation in the Local Group (LG) are unlikely to have interacted with the large LG spirals, and therefore environmental effects such as tidal and ram-pressure stripping should not be the main drivers of their evolution. Aims. We provide insight into the internal mechanisms shaping LG dwarf galaxies by increasing our knowledge of the internal properties of isolated systems. Here we focus on the evolved stellar component of the Aquarius dwarf galaxy, whose kinematic and metallicity properties have only recently started to be explored. Methods. Spectroscopic data in the region of the near-infrared Ca II triplet lines has been obtained with FORS2 at the Very Large Telescope for 53 red giant branch (RGB) stars. These data are used to derive line-of-sight (l.o.s.) velocities and [Fe/H] of the individual RGB stars. Results. We derive a systemic velocity of −142.2+1.8−1.8 km s−1, in agreement with previous determinations from both the HI gas and stars. The internal kinematics of Aquarius appears to be best modelled by a combination of random motions (l.o.s. velocity dispersion of 10.3+1.6−1.3 km s−1) and linear rotation (with a gradient −5.0+1.6−1.9 km s−1 arcmin−1) along a PA = 139+17−27 deg, broadly consistent with the optical projected major axis. This rotation signal is significantly misaligned or even counter-rotating to that derived from the HI gas. We also find the tentative presence of a mild negative metallicity gradient and indications that the metal-rich stars have a colder velocity dispersion than the metal-poor ones. Conclusions. This work represents a significant improvement with respect to previous measurements of the RGB stars of Aquarius as it doubles the number of member stars already studied in the literature. We speculate that the misaligned rotation between the HI gas and evolved stellar component might have been the result of recent accretion of HI gas, or re-accretion after gas-loss due to internal stellar feedback.

Abstract:
MG2016+112, discovered by Lawrence et al. (1984) is one of the best–studied among multiply–imaged systems, but is still only partially understood. Ostensibly a three–image system consisting of images A, B and C of a quasar at z = 3.273, the observed lensing galaxy D (a giant elliptical at z = 1.01) at the centroid of the image system seems inadequate to provide the minimum mass of ∼ 2.5 × 1012 M⊙ within 10 kpc of its center (in projection along the l.o.s.) required to produce the observed 3.″9 image–splitting. C itself appears to consist of two components, radio emission that may be associated with the faint optical image counterpart of A and B (called C2, see Garrett et al. 1994) and flat-spectrum C1, which dominates radio observations of the system and apparently consists of at least three linearly stretched subcomponents, C11 to C13 (see Garrett et al. in these proceedings).

Abstract:
2009/2010

Abstract:
This study explored the relationship between L.D.S. seminary discontinuation and the characteristics of individual dropouts. It also sought to identify distinguishing characteristics of students who continue enrollment in seminary. The seminary teachers and the program itself were considered for their impact on a student's decision to continue attendance. Major factors such as peer associations, Priesthood involvement, parental influence and recruitment practices were considered. The roll of public school academic requirements in connection with premature seminary dissociation were also investigated. Initially a sample of dropout and continuing students form Southern Arizona were interviewed using an open-ended, semi-structured format. This process elicited data in four major domains: (1) discriminating personal characteristics; (2) external factors; (3) structural factors; and (4) church related factors. The responses were analyzed and used to develop a second questionnaire. This second survey was then administered to a larger sample of dropout and continuing students throughout Arizona.

In a world where the Sign Languages have been recognized as natural Languages, thanks to several linguistic and non-linguistic studies, the desire to understand and discover new things about them increases. The study proposes the results of a research made in Italy and Spain about interpreting to and from Sign Languages in a scholar setting; the target is to understand the interpreting techniques and which are the points in commons and which one not between this nations. The study is organized as follows: the first part is dedicated to the interpreter, to the Italian Sign Language and to the Spanish Sign Language, and than there is a little section about the legislative situation nowadays. In the last part will be proposed the study, made in Italy (Noventa Padovana) and in Spain (Seville) about the importance of the presence of the interpreter in a school where there are deaf and hearing children. Moreover, the study wants to compare and analyse the interpreting technique that interpreters use in scholar and extra-scholar situations and relationships among colleagues. All this has been made thanks to some surveys proposed during the first experience and repeated, readapted, in the second experience.

This paper promotes the argument that although conventional postgraduate supervision is useful to address the research skills and competences of postgraduate students, a wider perspective is nonetheless required to educate and train any researcher (including postgraduate students upon their entrée into the world of research) to comprehend the demands made by research and how best these demands can be addressed. It is in this context that a more comprehensive concept of research education is promoted. The argument is based on the perspective that methodological understanding alone is not sufficient to assist a researcher in meeting the expectations of a research project. Research education refers to the training of researchers to be responsive to the research value chain. This includes aspects such as the formal research process, the importance of research ethics and integrity regarding the research project, the imperative to promote scholarship in research and the application of research results through technology transfer, innovation and incubation. Research education sensitizes the researcher to look beyond the scope of the academic research project and to extend the research to activities such as technology transfer, innovation, commercialization and partnerships. The aim of research education is to promote the wide range of aspects contributing to the understanding of what counts as research and its application.

In order to evaluate the transformations occurred in the samples submitted to the treatment in different times and pHs (neutral, basic and acid) those samples were analyzed by various tests (color mensuration in the CIELAB colorimetric space; contact angle between water and wood by the goniometer; XPS spectroscopy and Pyrolysis ? GC/MS). The samples were obtained from a Corymbia citriodora tree log harvested in the UFRRJ campus in Serop?dica. Those samples were treated mechanically in order to adequate it to the analysis with 10 x 20 x 2 mm dimensions. It was observed that the 6h acid was the one that presented the best natural aging appearance. All the tests done have shown that the wood components had different behaviors in each treatment, especially when we talk about lignin and its G/S (Guaiacyl:Siringyl). The results have shown that the reactions were well succeed, revealing that the ozone had reacted in the majority of the samples, with the lignin, affecting the G/S ratio for all the treatments. XPS data showed the level of oxidation, for example, in the neutral treatment, showing ozone oxidative effect. In this way, the G/S ratio revealed that the ozone attack have occurred, first with the lignins that have predominantly the guaiacyl units, assuming that the reaction affected mainly the cellular region with high guaiacyl units content. It was also detected in the acid treatment, that the ozone as well reached the extractives group, especially the decanoic acids. All the experimentations were sufficient to discolor and give aging appearance to the wood, as the color changing shown by the color tests with the spectrophotometer. The contact angle has proved that the samples in order absorb more water, becoming more hydrophilic, when related to the L:C ratio (lignin:carbohydrate).
Hill & L.A.S. Johnson.

Abstract:
This study examines the congruence of teacher evaluation practices in the L.D.S. Church Educational System with the institutionally stated purposes for which teacher evaluation is to be conducted. Specifically, this is a qualitative study that utilizes the "grounded theory" approach (Glaser; Strauss, 1967) in the analysis of 10 in-depth interviews of Released-time Seminary teachers of the L.D.S. Church Educational System. Interviews transcriptions of teacher perceptions regarding teacher evaluation practices provided the basis for data analysis and interpretation. The use of The Ethnograph IV software assisted data analysis wherein the researcher identified emergent themes and patterns relating to teacher evaluation practices. Findings suggest that L.D.S. teacher evaluation practices are not perceived as congruent with the institutionally stated purposes. Findings are presented in terms of thematic patterns found to be emergent in the data. A theoretical rationale for the CES teacher evaluation practices is provided by Max Weber's sociological theory of organizational bureaucracy. Recommendations regarding practice and additional research are included.

Abstract:
With high intensity femtosecond lasers it is possible to create plasmas with near solid densities. Such plasmas can bring valuable informations on the dynamics of dense hot solids. They also appear very promising as sources of sub-picosecond X-Ray pulses. The availability of such X-Ray bursts can have a significant impact in the field of Plasma and Solid State Physics. We will review some recent experiments performed at L.O.A. in order to obtain a better understanding of femtosecond laser-matter interaction. Experiments have been performed with time-resolved optical pump and probe techniques and with X-Ray diagnostics.

Abstract:
This paper presents a numerical study to tackle thermal striping phenomena occuring in piping systems. It is here applied to the Residual Heat Removal (RHR) bypass system. A large Eddy Simulation (L.E.S.) approach is used to model the turbulent flow in a T-junction. The thermal coupling between the Finite Volume CFD Code_Saturne and the Finite Element thermal code Syrthes, gives access to the instantaneous field inside the fluid and the solid. By using the instantaneous solid thermal fields, mechanical computations (as presented in (Stephan et al 2002)) are performed to yield the instantaneous mechanical stresses seen by the pipework T-junction and elbow.

Abstract:
Thermal fatigue of the coolant circuits of PWR plants is a major issue for nuclear safety. The problem is especially accute in mixing zones, like T-junctions, where large differences in water temperature between the two inlets and high levels of turbulence can lead to large temperature fluctuations at the wall. Until recently, studies on the matter had been tackled at EDF using steady methods: the fluid flow was solved with a CFD code using an averaged turbulence model, which led to the knowledge of the mean temperature and temperature variance at each point of the wall. But, being based on averaged quantities, this method could not reproduce the unsteady and 3D effects of the problem, like phase lag in temperature oscillations between two points, which can generate important stresses. Benefiting from advances in computer power and turbulence modelling, a new methodology is now applied, that allows to take these effects into account. The CFD tool Code_Saturne, developped at EDF, is used to solve the fluid flow using an unsteady L.E.S. approach. It is coupled with the thermal code Syrthes, which propagates the temperature fluctuations into the wall thickness. The instantaneous temperature field inside the wall can then be extracted and used for structure mechanics computations (mainly with EDF thermomechanics tool Code_Aster, see joint paper [1]). The purpose of this paper is to present the application of this methodology to the simulation of a straight T-junction mockup, similar to the Residual Heat Remover (RHR) junction found in N4 type PWR nuclear plants, and designed to study thermal striping and cracks propagation. The results are generally in good agreement with the measurements; yet, in certain areas of the flow, progress is still needed in L.E.S. modelling and in the treatment of instantaneous heat transfer at the wall.

Abstract:

Abstract:
