Abstract:
Conservation translocation and reintroduction for the purpose of repopulating and reinforcing extirpated or depleted populations has been recognised as an important conservation tool, particularly for gibbon conservation in the immediate future. Feasibility assessments involving multiple factors, including taxonomic and genetic assessment of rescued and captive gibbons, are imperative prior to translocation and reintroduction programmes. In this study, we attempt to determine the subspecies and origin of captive Hylobates lar, White-handed gibbons, from Peninsular Malaysia to assist in future translocation and reintroduction programmes. A total of 12 captive and rescued H. lar samples were analysed using the control region segment of mitochondrial DNA. Sequence analyses and phylogenetic trees constructed using neighbour-joining, maximum likelihood, Bayesian inference, and network methods congruently differentiate all 12 captive individuals used in this study from other H. lar subspecies suggesting that these individuals belong to the H. lar lar subspecies. In addition, two populations of H. l. lar were observed: (1) a southern population consisting of all 12 individuals from Peninsular Malaysia, and (2) a possible northern population represented by three individuals (from previous studies), which might have originated from the region between the Isthmus of Kra, Surat Thani-Krabi depression, and Kangar-Pattani. Our findings suggest that the complete control region segment can be used to determine the subspecies and origin of captive H. lar.

Abstract:
We compute the quantum string entropy S s (m, H) from the microscopic string density of states ρ s (m, H) of mass m in de Sitter space–time. We find for high m (high Hm → c/α') a new phase transition at the critical string temperature T s = (1/2πk B )L cl c2/α', higher than the flat space (Hagedorn) temperature t s (L cl = c/H, the Hubble constant H acts at the transition, producing a smaller string constant α' and thus, a higher tension). T s is the precise quantum dual of the semiclassical (QFT Hawking–Gibbons) de Sitter temperature T sem = ħ c/(2πk B L cl ). By precisely identifying the semiclassical and quantum (string) de Sitter regimes, we find a new formula for the full de Sitter entropy S sem (H), as a function of the usual Bekenstein–Hawking entropy [Formula: see text]. For L cl ≫ ℓ Planck , i.e. for low [Formula: see text] is the leading term, but for high H near c/ℓ Planck , a new phase transition operates and the whole entropy S sem (H) is drastically different from the Bekenstein–Hawking entropy [Formula: see text]. We compute the string quantum emission cross-section σ string by a black hole in de Sitter (or asymptotically de Sitter) space–time (bhdS). For T sem bhdS ℓ T s (early evaporation stage), it shows the QFT Hawking emission with temperature T sem bhdS (semiclassical regime). For T sem bhdS → T s , σ string exhibits a phase transition into a string de Sitter state of size [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and string de Sitter temperature T s . Instead of featuring a single pole singularity in the temperature (Carlitz transition), it features a square root branch point (de Vega–Sanchez transition). New bounds on the black hole radius r g emerge in the bhdS string regime: it can become r g = L s /2, or it can reach a more quantum value, r g = 0.365 ℓ s .

Abstract:
Forty-two species of hydroids, excluding stylasterids, are reported in the present collection from the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. Of these, four are anthoathecates and 38 are leptothecates. Among the latter, Sertularella affinicostata and Monotheca gibbosa are described as new species. The binomen Halopteris longibrachia is proposed as a new replacement name for Plumularia polymorpha var. sibogae Billard, 1913, an invalid junior primary homonym of P. sibogae Billard, 1911. Based largely on evidence from earlier molecular phylogenies, the genus Disertasia Neppi, 1917 is resurrected to accommodate species including Dynamena crisioides Lamouroux, 1824, Sertularia disticha Bosc, 1802, and Sia. moluccana Pictet, 1893. Sertularella robusta Coughtrey, 1876 is an invalid junior primary homonym of Sla. gayi var. robusta Allman, 1874a, and has been replaced here by the binomen Sla. quasiplana Trebilcock, 1928, originally described as Sla. robusta var. quasiplana Trebilcock, 1928. Clytia hummelincki (Leloup, 1935) is referred to the synonymy of its senior subjective synonym, C. brevithecata (Thornely, 1900). Following Reversal of Precedence provisions in the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature to preserve prevailing usage of binomena, the familiar names Sia. disticha Bosc, 1802 (also known as Dynamena disticha) and Lytocarpia phyteuma (Stechow, 1919b) are designated nomena protecta and assigned precedence over their virtually unknown senior synonyms Hydra quinternana Bosc, 1797 and Aglaophenia clavicula Whitelegge, 1899, respectively, names now reduced to the status of nomena oblita. Twenty species are reported for the first time from Hawaii [Eudendrium merulum Watson, 1985, Phialellidae (undetermined), Hebella sp., Hebellopsis scandens (Bale, 1888), H. sibogae Billard, 1942, Clytia brevithecata, C. linearis (Thornely, 1900), C. cf. noliformis (McCrady, 1859), Halecium sp., Sla. affinicostata, Sla. angulosa Bale, 1894, Pasya heterodonta (Jarvis, 1922), Tridentata orthogonalis (Gibbons & Ryland, 1989), Pycnotheca producta (Bale, 1881), Monotheca gibbosa, H. longibrachia, A. postdentata Billard, 1913, A. suensonii Jäderholm, 1896, A. whiteleggei Bale, 1888, and L. flexuosa (Lamouroux, 1816)]. Sertularia orthogonalis, reported for only the third time worldwide, is assigned to the genus Tridentata Stechow, 1920. Hydroids of the NOWRAMP 2002 collection consisted largely of presumptive widespread species, with over 75% of them having been reported elsewhere in the tropical Indo-west Pacific region.

Abstract:
Objective: To study 1) Optimization of nutritional and environmental parameters to enhance the yield of EPS by Halomonas smyrnensis SVD III isolated from seawater, West Coast of Maharashtra, India and 2) Purification and characterization of the EPS produced.Methods: The isolate was grown in Sehgal and Gibbons (SG) medium broth supplemented with 3% glucose, at 37 °C, 120 rpm for 7 d. Optimization of different parameters was carried out with one factor at a time approach. EPS was isolated from cell-free supernatant of the culture broth by centrifugation and precipitation using chilled ethanol, after removal of proteins by trichloroacetic acid (TCA) treatment. Characterization of the purified EPS was carried out with respect to fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectrum, 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrum and mass spectrometry (MS) analysis.Results: Two-fold increase in the yield of EPS (23 g/l) by the selected isolate was obtained by using culture conditions as 10% inoculum size having cell density of 107 cells/ml, pH 6, incubation temperature 45 °C, 3% carbohydrate, 0.5% yeast extract as nitrogen source, 20% salt concentration and 7 d of incubation period. Characterization of the purified EPS suggested the presence of dominated glycosidic linkages and heptasaccharide nature of the molecule. As the present strain is halophilic, 20% NaCl was found to be optimum.Conclusion: Optimization studies resulted in two-fold increase in the yield of EPS which is of heptasaccharide nature.

Relatively little is known about the functions of central-pair microtubules (Tamm, S. L., and G. A. Horridge, 1970, Proc. Roy. Soc. Lond. B, 175: 219-233; Omoto, C. K., and C. Kung, 1979, Nature (Lond.). 279:532-534) and radial spokes (Warner, F. D., and P. Satir, 1974, J. Cell Biol., 63:35-63), although a sliding microtubule mechanism has been established for the flagellar movement (Summers, K. E., and I. R. Gibbons, 1971, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA., 68:3092-3096). In the present report, an attempt was made to determine the functions of central-pair microtubules in flagellar motility. Central-pair microtubules were found to extrude from the tips of elastase-digested axonemes of demembranated Chlamydomonas flagella after the addition of ATP. The length of the extruded central-pair microtubules was approximately 70-100% that of the axoneme. After extrusion, axonemes continued to swim slowly backwards in the reactivation medium, with a trailing central pair attached like a tail to the flagellar tip. During bending movement of the axonemes, partially extruded central pairs rotated counterclockwise about the axoneme axis, as viewed from the distal end (Kamiya, R., 1982, Cell Motil. [Suppl.]:169-173). Axonemes swam backwards with a symmetric waveform and a beat frequency of approximately 10 Hz in the reactivation medium containing 10(-9)-10(-4) M Ca ions. Even at a lower Ca++ concentration, no ciliary-type swimming was noted on the axonemes.

In questa tesi studiamo l'effetto Gibbs. Tale fenomeno si manifesta tramite la presenza di sovra-oscillazioni nei polinomi di Fourier di funzioni che presentano discontinuità di prima specie. La differenza tra il massimo ed il minimo del polinomio di Fourier di tali funzioni, in prossimità di un punto di discontinuità della funzione, è strettamente maggiore del salto della funzione in quel punto, anche per n che tende all'infinito. Per attenuare le sovra-oscillazioni delle somme parziali di Fourier si utilizzano le serie di Fejer e si vede come effettivamente il fenomeno di Gibbs scompaia.

L'effetto Gibbs è un fenomeno oscillatorio che riguarda i polinomi di Fourier. In particolare, ogni volta che si approssima una funzione periodica e regolare a tratti con il suo polinomio di Fourier associato, si può notare che, in prossimità dei punti di discontinuità di tipo salto di tale funzione, il polinomio presenta delle sovraelongazioni che non si attenuano all'aumentare del grado. Lo studio di questo fenomeno è stato diviso in tre parti. Nel primo capitolo vengono studiati i polinomi e le serie di Fourier e vengono forniti i principali risultati di convergenza. Il secondo capitolo introduce il fenomeno di Gibbs attraverso due esempi particolari e si conclude con l'analisi del caso generale per funzioni periodiche e regolari a tratti. Infine, nel terzo e ultimo capitolo, vengono studiate le somme di Fejér e si dimostra come queste siano una soluzione all'effetto Gibbs.

Abstract:
L'argomento di questa tesi è il fenomeno di Gibbs, un fenomeno che riguarda dei particolari polinomi trigonometrici, i polinomi di Fourier: questi ultimi sono molto utilizzati per approssimare funzioni periodiche in quanto tra tutti i polinomi trigonometrici sono quelli che minimizzano l'errore in norma quadratica. Il fenomeno di Gibbs si può descrivere in questo modo: siano date una funzione f periodica che presenta punti di discontinuità di prima specie e la sua approssimazione tramite serie di Fourier; quando si tronca questa serie si avranno delle forti oscillazioni in prossimità dei punti di discontinuità della funzione. Aumentando il numero di componenti della serie troncata le oscillazioni si avvicinano sempre di più ai relativi punti di discontinuità ma il picco rimane lo stesso. La tesi è stata suddivisa in tre capitoli. Nel primo si inizia definendo i polinomi di Fourier e mostrando alcune loro proprietà, dopodiché si studia la convergenza della serie di Fourier. Nel secondo si descrive il fenomeno di Gibbs: si comincia mostrando graficamente cosa accade in tre esempi distinti di funzioni periodiche in prossimità dei loro punti di discontinuità; si analizza quindi quantitativamente uno di questi esempi e si conclude fornendo un risultato generale. Infine nel terzo, dopo aver definito le somme di Fejér e un nuovo tipo di convergenza, quella secondo Cesaro si mostra come correggere questo fenomeno utilizzando le somme di Fejér al posto dei polinomi di Fourier.

Questa trattazione ha lo scopo di fornire una spiegazione matematica del fenomeno di Gibbs, il quale si verifica quando sono presenti forti oscillazioni nei polinomi di Fourier di una funzione con discontinuità di prima specie. Osserveremo che queste peculiarità, che si trovano vicino ai punti di discontinuità della funzione, non diminuiscono aumentando il grado del polinomio, tanto che la serie sembra non convergere alla funzione sviluppata. Vedremo che un modo per far scomparire questo fenomeno è quello di utilizzare un altro tipo di polinomi trigonometrici, cioè quelli di Fejér, al posto di quelli di Fourier. Di solito però si preferisce utilizzare comunque il polinomio di Fourier per la rappresentazione della funzione, anche se può portare a queste anomalie, perché è il polinomio trigonometrico che meglio approssima la funzione in norma quadratica. Diremo che lo studio di questo fenomeno è molto attuale, perché in tutti i processi di approssimazione, quali per esempio la ricostruzione o il filtraggio di immagini e segnali, bisogna tener controllate queste particolari oscillazioni descritte sopra, cercando di eliminarne il più possibile.

Questa trattazione si propone di fornire una spiegazione del fenomeno di Gibbs in termini matematici. Con l'espressione fenomeno di Gibbs intendiamo la presenza di forti oscillazioni nei polinomi di Fourier di una funzione con discontinuità di prima specie. Si osserva che queste anomalie, presenti vicino ai punti di discontinuità, non sembrano diminuire aumentando il grado del polinomio, al punto che la serie pare non convergere alla funzione sviluppata. Osserveremo che utilizzando un altro tipo di polinomi trigonometrici, quelli di Fejér in luogo di quelli di Fourier, scomparirà il fenomeno di Gibbs. Nonostante ciò, spesso si preferisce rappresentare una funzione utilizzando il suo polinomio di Fourier poiché questo è il polinomio trigonometrico che meglio approssima la funzione in norma quadratica.

In questa trattazione è presente una descrizione dettagliata del fenomeno di Gibbs , che si presenta quando vi sono delle forti oscillazioni dei polinomi di Fourier, con i quali una funzione regolare a tratti e periodica viene approssimata, attorno alle discontinuità di prima specie. Questo fenomeno risulta essere ancora estremamente attuale; infatti nei processi di approssimazione, riguardanti, per esempio, la ricostruzione o il filtraggio di immagini o segnali, è fondamentale riuscire a controllare le oscillazioni dovute a tale fenomeno. Ho fornito nozioni preliminari per descrivere in modo dettagliato il fenomeno preso in esame come la definizione di serie di Fourier ed i relativi criteri di convergenza (puntale, uniforme e in media quadratica). Infine ho definito le serie di Fejér e mostrato che, approssimando le funzioni con queste, il fenomeno di Gibbs non avviene.

Abstract:
Il contrasto fra l'approccio alla termodinamica statistica di Gibbs e di Boltzmann è un problema tutt'ora aperto e discusso. Tale ambito è terreno ricco di dibattiti che vertono su quale dei due lavori teorici porti alla definizione più consistente della termodinamica in termini microscopici. In particolare negli ultimi anni, con il raggiungimento di importanti risultati inerenti l'argomento, è stato riaperto il problema concentrandosi sul concetto di temperatura assoluta negativa. Infatti questa apparentemente peculiare situazione fisica è del tutto compatibile con la trattazione termodinamica di Boltzmann, ma non compare assolutamente con l'approccio di Gibbs. Scopo di questa tesi è analizzare in modo critico la definizione di entropia alla quale si arriva seguendo i diversi ragionamenti dei due fisici portando alla luce forti differenze tra i risultati che si conseguono utilizzando l’uno o l’altro metodo anche facendo riferimento alla considerevole quantità di articoli scientifici pubblicati al riguardo e si mostrerà come i due differenti approcci portino comunque agli stessi risultati nel limite termodinamico. Inoltre si commenteranno vari esperimenti riguardanti temperature negative e le condizioni fisiche necessarie per il raggiungimento di queste. Infine per dare a tale lavoro un certo senso di concretezza si analizzerà un sistema formato da un Gas di N atomi avente un spettro interno a due livelli e si mostrerà come le differenze fra l'approccio di Gibbs e quello di Boltzmann, per determinate quantità misurabili, tendano a diminuire in modo proporzionale a $ N^{-1/2}$ ovvero molto meno velocemente dell' andamento atteso di $1/N$. Tale considerazione rende possibile sperare la fine di tale controversia alla base della termodinamica statistica con il raggiungimento di un concreto risultato sperimentale che possa mettere fine alle ambiguità sulla scelta dei due diversi modelli statistici.

Abstract:
This chapter surveys the experiences of black Americans in the early foreign service. The U.S. Department of State was the first major government department to appoint blacks to positions of prestige. This generation included John L. Waller, Mifflin Wistar Gibbs, and Richard T. Greener, as well as career officer William Henry Hunt. Such progressivism occurred in an atmosphere of pervasive racism and reflected not only the varying interests of the two major political parties but also the growing disenfranchisement of blacks through the Jim Crow laws. Ultimately, these early officers faced personal dilemmas born out of contrasting experiences abroad and at home.

Abstract:
<em>Abstract.</em>—We examined fish assemblage responses to urban intensity gradients in two contrasting metropolitan areas: Birmingham, Alabama (BIR) and Boston, Massachusetts (BOS). Urbanization was quantified by using an urban intensity index (UII) that included multiple stream buffers and basin land uses, human population density, and road density variables. We evaluated fish assemblage responses by using species richness metrics and detrended correspondence analyses (DCA). Fish species richness metrics included total fish species richness, and percentages of endemic species richness, alien species, and fluvial specialist species. Fish species richness decreased significantly with increasing urbanization in BIR (<em>r </em>= –0.82, <EM>P </EM>= 0.001) and BOS (<em>r </em>= –0.48, <EM>P </EM>= 0.008). Percentages of endemic species richness decreased significantly with increasing urbanization only in BIR (<em>r </em>= – 0.71, <EM>P </EM>= 0.001), whereas percentages of fluvial specialist species decreased significantly with increasing urbanization only in BOS (<em>r </em>= –0.56, <EM>P </EM>= 0.002). Our DCA results for BIR indicate that highly urbanized fish assemblages are composed primarily of largescale stoneroller <em>Campostoma oligolepis</em>, largemouth bass <em>Micropterus salmoides</em>, and creek chub <em>Semotilus atromaculatus</em>, whereas the highly urbanized fish assemblages in BOS are dominated by yellow perch <em>Perca flavescens</em>, bluegill <em>Lepomis macrochirus</em>, yellow bullhead <em>Ameiurus natalis</em>, largemouth bass, pumpkinseed <em>L. gibbosus</em>, brown bullhead <em>A. nebulosus</em>, and redfin pickerel <em>Esox americanus</em>. Differences in fish assemblage responses to urbanization between the two areas appear to be related to differences in nutrient enrichment, habitat alterations, and invasive species. Because species richness can increase or decrease with increasing urbanization, a general response model is not applicable. Instead, response models based on species’ life histories, behavior, and autecologies offer greater potential for understanding fish assemblage responses to urbanization.

Abstract:
In this paper, extraction of the total flavonoid compounds from dill (Anethum graveolens L) leaves using an aqueous ethanol solution (50% by volume) was studied at different temperatures (30, 40, and 50 0C). A physical unsteady- state diffusion model and empirical Ponomarev model were developed to model the extraction process’s kinetics. The enthalpy and entropy changes were positive, while the Gibbs free energy was negative and decreased when temperature increased during the thermodynamic analysis. Therefore, extraction of total flavonoids from dill leaves was endothermic, spontaneous, and irreversible.
