Abstract:
Pharmacological and surgical interventions that increase glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) action are effective to improve glucose homeostasis in type 2 diabetes mellitus. In light of this, nutritional strategies to enhance postprandial GLP-1 secretion, particularly in the context of diet-induced obesity, may provide an alternative therapeutic approach. Importantly, recent evidence suggests the amino acid l-arginine, a well-known insulin secretagogue, can also stimulate release of GLP-1 from isolated rat intestine. Here we tested the hypothesis that oral l-arginine acts as a GLP-1 secretagogue in vivo, to augment postprandial insulin secretion and improve glucose tolerance. To test this, we administered l-arginine or vehicle by oral gavage, immediately prior to an oral glucose tolerance test in lean and diet-induced obese mice. In both lean and obese mice oral l-arginine increased plasma GLP-1 and insulin and substantially improved glucose clearance. To directly assess the contribution of GLP-1 receptor (GLP-1R)-signaling to these improvements, l-arginine was given to Glp1r knockout mice and their wild-type littermates. In this experiment oral l-arginine significantly augmented insulin secretion and improved glucose clearance in WT mice, but not in Glp1r knockout littermates. Taken together these findings identify l-arginine as a GLP-1 secretagogue in vivo and demonstrate that improvement of glucose tolerance by oral l-arginine depends on GLP-1R-signaling. These findings raise the intriguing possibility that l-arginine-based nutritional and/or pharmaceutical therapies may benefit glucose tolerance by improving the postprandial GLP-1 response in obese individuals.

Abstract:
Abstract Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the US with 53,200 deaths projected in 2020. Although the disease affects older people, recent statistics show an increase in the younger population. CRC is a major problem in veterans and every year ~4,000 veterans are diagnosed with CRC within VA facilities. Hence, there is a dire need to identify novel signaling pathways as targets for therapy. Based on a bedside discovery in CRC patients, we observed that CRC patients complained about dysgeusia or taste alterations. There are 25 bitter taste receptors (TAS2R1-50, TAS2R60). Taste receptors utilize G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) and signal through calcium release. In preliminary studies, mining the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database, we have determined that TAS2R38 is upregulated in multiple cancers, including CRC. Moreover, the higher expression of TAS2R38 transcript in CRC compared to other cancers. Furthermore, we confirmed overexpression of TAS2R38 in CRC tissues and cell lines by immunohistochemistry and RT-PCR. Moreover, N-(3-oxododecanoyl)-L-homoserine lactone (OdDHL), a TAS2R38 agonist, treatment activated calcium mobilization in HCT116 and DLD1 cells suggesting the functionality of the receptor. OdDHL also enhanced mRNA of interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-8 levels in the CRC cells. To determine whether expression of the receptor is affected in vivo, we conducted the dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced acute colitis and colitis-associated cancer model (azoxymethane (AOM)-DSS) in C57BL/6 mice. TAS2R138, the mouse homolog of human TAS2R38 is overexpressed in crypt epithelial cells in the colitis and tumor tissues. These observations suggest that TAS2R38 is overexpressed in the CRC and may play a critical role in disease progression. Abstract:
In this work, the antioxidants of the two varieties of bananas viz. dominico (Musa sapientum L.) and maqueño (Musa balbisiana L.) were evaluated. Three factors were considered before the determination of antioxidant activity i.e. variety of banana, type of antioxidant and amount of antioxidant. The same conditions were also considered for citric acid and ascorbic acid in the amounts of 13, 15 and 17 mg/Kg; evaluated in the 36 experimental units. According to the obtained results, the best type of antioxidant is citric acid, which indicated that the T5 treatment is the one that presents the best results in the processed products. In addition, in this treatment a lower amount of antioxidant is used at a rate of 15 mg/Kg. It was established that they were complied with the minimum parameters established in the Codex Standard for Bananas (Plantain) Codex Stan 205-1997. The studied bananas were also complied with the microbiological parameters as established in the Ecuadorian technical standard NT INEN 1529-10. The definitive can be established that this product is fit for human consumption.

Given a holomorphic line bundle L on a compact complex torus A, there are two naturally associated holomorphic ΩA-torsors over A: one is constructed from the Atiyah exact sequence for L, and the other is constructed using the line bundle [Formula: see text], where α is the addition map on A × A, and p1 is the projection of A × A to the first factor. In [I. Biswas, J. Hurtvbise and A. K. Raina, Rank one connections on abelian varieties, Internat. J. Math.22 (2011) 1529–1543], it was shown that these two torsors are isomorphic. The aim here is to produce a canonical isomorphism between them through an explicit construction.

Abstract:
Background Mean kurtosis (MK), one of the parameters derived from diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI), has shown increased sensitivity to tissue microstructure damage in several neurological disorders. Methods Thirty-seven patients with relapsing-remitting MS and eleven healthy controls (HC) received brain imaging on a 3T MR scanner, including a fast DKI sequence. MK and mean diffusivity (MD) were measured in the white matter of HC, normal-appearing white matter (NAWM) of MS patients, contrast-enhancing lesions (CE-L), FLAIR lesions (FLAIR-L) and black holes (BH). Results Overall 1529 lesions were analyzed, including 30 CE-L, 832 FLAIR-L and 667 BH. Highest MK values were obtained in the white matter of HC (0.814 ± 0.129), followed by NAWM (0.724 ± 0.137), CE-L (0.619 ± 0.096), FLAIR-L (0.565 ± 0.123) and BH (0.549 ± 0.12). Lowest MD values were obtained in the white matter of HC (0.747 ± 0.068 10−3mm2/sec), followed by NAWM (0.808 ± 0.163 10−3mm2/sec), CE-L (0.853 ± 0.211 10−3mm2/sec), BH (0.957 ± 0.304 10−3mm2/sec) and FLAIR-L (0.976 ± 0.35 10−3mm2/sec). While MK differed significantly between CE-L and non-enhancing lesions, MD did not. Conclusion MK adds predictive value to differentiate between MS lesions and might provide further information about diffuse white matter injury and lesion microstructure.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
Flounders (Platichthys flesus L. ) were sampled from the cooling water intake screens of West Thurrock power station, Essex, from September 1987 to October 1990. Changes in population structure are determined from age and morphometric data. Adult flounders congregate in the mid-estuary in late spring, prior to their spawning migration. New recruits arrive in the estuary in summer and disperse upstream after a few weeks. Dispersal appears to involve density-dependant population regulating mechanisms. Growth appears seasonal to an extent, being reduced during winter months. The gut contents were analysed and a trophic spectrum constructed. P. flesus is an opportunist predator, feeding predominantly on crustaceans in the mid estuary and molluscs in the outer estuary. There is some evidence of resource partitioning between adult and juvenile flounders. The significance of changes in the lipid reserves of 0-group flounders is discussed. The seasonal dynamics of external disease symptoms and parasite burden of these fish was evaluated, and related to population structure, dietary condition and water quality variables. 2 The prevalence of all external disease in flounders from Kest Thurrock is closely related to population structure. Younger fish generally display lower disease prevalences. -Increased prevalence of lymphocystis may be related to increases in the prevalence of ulcerations or heavy infections by the copepod Lepeophtheirus pectoralis. A correlation between the minimum monthly dissolved oxygen (D. O. ) level and the condition factor of flounders is demonstrated. Fewer epidermal ulcers are observed on flounders with a high condition factor. The prevalence of epidermal ulcerations, and to an extent lymphocystis, are thus indirectly associated with estuarine pollution. The use of external disease prevalence as a bioindicator of estuarine pollution is considered. Live flounders were observed in various lighting regimes using time-lapse video techniques to determine the nature and extent of intrinsic rhythmic behaviour. Observations were made on the behaviour modifying effects of contaminated sediments and hypoxic conditions. The findings are discussed in relation to the ecology of the flounder in the Thames estuary.

The research presented in this thesis explores convergent television-related consumer practices of teenagers by mapping factors which potentially orient fruition patterns. The myth of “digital natives” as more skilled and resourceful than their parents does not suffice: it is necessary to study actual cross-platform experiences by contextualizing them within the sets of affordances and limitations (cultural, social and contextual) which structure the daily lives of teenagers. The centrality assigned to the many factors shaping convergent consumptions has driven the analysis towards the definition of a situational multi-factor interpretative view able to interpret the contingent and ephemeral nature of the balances underpinning convergent consumption experiences.

De, Zuani Laura. "Bartolomeo Montagna (1450 c.- 1523)." Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Padova, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/11577/3423973.

Full text
Abstract:
This essay presents, in form of a classical monograph, the painter Bartolomeo Montagna founder of the Renaissance vicentine school of painting. He was born in Orzinuovi (a small town near Brescia, in Lombardia) and he lived in Vicenza. This essay strarts from his early production side by side with Gianfrancesco Somaio, to the direct comparison with venetian innovation, carried on by Giovanni Bellini. Bartolomeo Montagna faced with the venetian master during two journeys in Venice between 1469 and 1483. Looking at his eighties production, boundend to the venetian experience and to Antonello da Messina’s heritage, the monograph faces the complex connections among Bartolomeo Montagna, the inlayer Pierantonio degli Abati and the architect Lorenzo da Bologna. The collaboration within these three artists started with the great construction of the vicentine church of San Bartolomeo and then it went on thanks to the most important artistic workshops in Padua at the end of the Century. The first years of the painter in Padua are examined through archive documents and stylistic analysis, trying to make new hypothesis on his patrons. After explaining the complex cultural contributions matched by the painter, this dissertation takes care of the nineties production, touching connections with milanese figurative culture. The artist must have known it thanks to a journey to Lombardia, due to the chartusian patronage in Pavia (1490). Mature production is later examined, showing connections between prestigious commissions in Verona and Padua, when Montagna had the chance to compare with Mantegnesque culture. During the hard Cambrai war the artist, probably looking for a shelter in Padua, set one of his most famous works: the fresco representing the Recognition St. Anthony’s mortal remains (1512). The new raising star Titian, who had worked in the same Scoletta, affected Montagna’s production from his mature vicentine to his later provincial commissions (in Cologna Veneta). Paintings and drawings catalogue complete this monograph, in addition to a substantial historical document apparatus.

This thesis analyses the history of chiapas, mexico, from the spanish conquest to the 1712 great indian rebellion, with emphasis on the transformation in the organisation of space. The organisation of space is analysed from several dimensions (ecological, linguistic, political, administrative, religious, demographic and economic, tributary, mutual help relationships, and insurgent). Separate chapters, one for each one of these dimensions, look at the history of the social organisation of space from a different perspective. The thesis shows how the internal logic of each of these dimensions is disturbed by irreducible historical accidents

L’Astrée is considered to be the novel that put amorous politeness in the literature and customs of the Seventeenth Century. H. D’Urfé gave the aristocracy an approach to Neoplatonic love previously reserved for a few intellectuals : his fiction was a rhetorical contrivance that served a definite theory. His work, however, received an ambiguous reception. Was this a result of the way it was read or was it intentional ? The fact that the roman was unfinished, either accidentally or deliberately, does not provide a definite answer. Questioning the Neoplatonic basis of d’Urfé’s novel, this thesis focuses on a textual interpretation and relies on Spanish precedents to show how philosophical discourse is embedded in the novelistic genre and the pastoral esthetic

Abstract:
AbstractFollowing years of a liberal approach to digital technologies, platforms, services, and markets, the EU has stepped up its action in recent years. The adoption of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) (Regulation (EU) 2016/679 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 April 2016 on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data and repealing Directive 95/46/EC (General Data Protection Regulation), OJ L 119, 1) in 2016 can be seen as a starting point for new regulations that are now enacted and proposed under the European Commission’s strategy “A Europe fit for the digital age.” This article will briefly summarize the contents of the GDPR as well as the Digital Services Act (DSA) (Regulation (EU) 2022/2065 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 19 October 2022 on a Single Market for Digital Services and amending Directive 2000/31/EC (Digital Services Act), OJ L 277, 1), Digital Markets Act (DMA) (Regulation (EU) 2022/1925 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 14 September 2022 on contestable and fair markets in the digital sector and amending Directives (EU) 2019/1937 and (EU) 2020/1828 (Digital Markets Act), OJ L 265, 1), Data Governance Act (DGA) (Regulation (EU) 2022/868 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 30 May 2022 on European data governance and amending Regulation (EU) 2018/1724 (Data Governance Act), OJ L 152, 1), and the proposals for the Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act) (Proposal for a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council laying down harmonized rules on artificial intelligence (Artificial Intelligence Act) and amending certain Union legislative acts, 21 April 2021, COM(2021) 206 final.) as well as the Data Act (Proposal for a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on harmonized rules on fair access to and use of data (Data Act), 23 February 2022, COM(2022) 68 final.). We identify the underpinnings of the normative approach and its potential and shortcomings, thus providing an assessment of the role of Europe as a technology regulator more broadly and its relationship to digital humanism.

Smith, E. "The Effect of Restraint Non-Linearity on the Instability of Growth of a Circumferential Through-Wall Crack in a Piping System." In ASME 2002 Pressure Vessels and Piping Conference. ASMEDC, 2002. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/pvp2002-1519.

Full text
Abstract:
The paper is concerned with the criterion for the instability of growth of a circumferential through-wall crack in a piping system. A simple approach involves representing the cracked section behaviour by a moment (M)–rotation (φ) relation. The criterion for unstable crack growth is then L* > EI |dφ/dM| where E is Young’s modulus and I is the second moment of area of the piping at the cracked section. L* can be viewed as a crack-system compliance length parameter or an “effective” pipe length. If the piping system, apart from the cracked system, behaves in a linear manner, L* is dependent on the system’s characteristics but most importantly, is independent of the magnitudes of any applied loadings and the characteristics of the cracked section. This paper is concerned with the effect of system non-linearity, and in particular restraint non-linearity, on the instability criterion, the considerations being based on the analyses of a simple model which contains a restraint which behaves non-linearly. In this case, we show that L* is no longer dependent only on the system’s characteristics, as is the case when the restraint behaves linearly.

This paper deals with wildfire identification in the Alaska regions as a semantic segmentation task using support vector machine classifiers. Instead of colour information represented by means of BGR channels, we proceed with a normalized reflectance over 152 days so that such time series is assigned to each pixel. We compare models associated with $\mathcal{l}1$-loss and $\mathcal{l}2$-loss functions and stopping criteria based on a projected gradient and duality gap in the presented benchmarks.
