Full textGustave Flaubert and Guy de Maupassant were friends and realist authors who wanted to describe the totality of society as artisans rather than artists. In doing so both of them used the way their characters dressed to discover society, the stratification in society and the characters in their literary work. However, in spite of their will to work as artisans they were stylistically prominent with styles precise and elaborated. From a socio-critical point of view this essay tries to understand: How the out-fit unveils the social position of the characters. How the out-fit unveils the story and psychology of the characters. How the out-fit symbolises the characters in a wider literary context.

Full textThroughout the last years, there has been a surge in false news spreading across the public. Despite efforts made in alleviating "fake news", there remains a lot of ordeals when trying to build automated fact-checking systems, including the four we discuss in this thesis. First, it is not clear how to bridge the gap between input textual claims, which are to be verified, and structured data that is to be used for claim verification. We take a step in this direction by introducing Scrutinizer, a data-driven fact-checking system that translates textual claims to SQL queries, with the aid of a human-machine interaction component. Second, we enhance reasoning capabilities of pre-trained language models (PLMs) by introducing RuleBert, a PLM that is fine-tuned on data coming from logical rules. Third, PLMs store vast information; a key resource in fact-checking applications. Still, it is not clear how to efficiently access them. Several works try to address this limitation by searching for optimal prompts or relying on external data, but they do not put emphasis on the expected type of the output. For this, we propose Type Embeddings (TEs), additional input embeddings that encode the desired output type when querying PLMs. We discuss how to compute a TE, and provide several methods for analysis. We then show a boost in performance for the LAMA dataset and promising results for text detoxification. Finally, we analyze the BirdWatch program, a community-driven approach to fact-checking tweets. All in all, the work in this thesis aims at a better understanding of how machines and humans could aid in reinforcing and scaling manual fact-checking

Our purpose has been to try to show the impact of those influences on the man. And how he tried to solve his problems by writing. Graham greene a little forgotten recently is a great witness of his time and may be considered as a great writer. Full textThis research work is devoted to the study of catalytic reforming of exhaust gas recirculation (REGR) for gasoline engines. The aim of this technology is to improve fuel economy and to reduce pollutant emissions, keeping practically the same engine. A lot of catalysts, containing 1wt% of Rh, supported on alumina doped by ceria, Al(Cex) and/or baryum, AlBa(Cex) or on zirconia doped by rare earth oxides ZLNY(Cex), were characterized and evaluated in REGR conditions for high (580°C) and l ow (450°C) temperatures. The Rh(1wt%)/ZLNY(Cex) catalysts present the best activity and/or stability, the Rh(1wt%)/ZLNY catalyst being the most selective for hydrogen production. From the best catalytic formulation, two fundamental studies were carried out in REGR conditions in order to understand the role of the co-reactants and the surface species on the catalyst performance and deactivation, and to determine the reaction scheme for the main reactions (steam reforming, dry reforming and methane formation)

Full textIn recent years, roboticians have taken biology as a source of inspiration and have tried with increasing effort to reproduce biological functions and structures in artificial systems. In particular, robotics and neuro-engineering have often merged into a unitary discipline that tries to reproduce basic principles of the nervous system with the goal of both making robots interact with the world in a human-like fashion and exploiting artificial models as benchmarks for testing novel scientific hypotheses. Following these objectives, the work presented here has been carried out to develop a closed loop neural architecture for active sensing and fine touch discrimination. Neural coding principles observed at the periphery of the somatosensory pathway were reproduced by emulating the spiking dynamics of primary afferents and cuneate neurons. Second order neuron responses were supplied to a classifier which computed the probability estimates of the stimulus and devised a movement policy for the fingertip in a dynamic recognition task scenario. The closed loop system was completed with a neuro-mimetic model of the cerebellum for the low-level control of the fingertip. In a real-world application, an artificial fingertip provided the inputs to the mechanoreceptor model. Testing the closed loop architecture on a Braille reading task showed that both primary afferent and cuneate neuron populations efficiently and reliably transmitted enough information to perform a perfect discrimination. The presented neural architecture could contribute to the study of both the neural bases of fine touch in humans, and neuro-mimetic solutions for processing tactile signals in humanoid robots

Full textThe aim of this work is to try to use observed global changes to understand interactions between individual nodes inside biochemical networks. We have worked on the determination of the essential interactions in the auto regulatory process that describes the cell cycle of Xenopus frog eggs. The results make possible an assessment of the effect of each protein on the biochemical network stability. The technique was applied also to a dynamical analysis of a uterine cell electrical activity model with view to study the impact of physiological parameters on the response of the model and identify the main subsystems generating the electrical activity. We also present a model developed for understanding an enzymatic diffusion-reaction system. The objective is to analyze the dynamic behavior of three different chemical species, the modification of enzymatic kinetic properties and the existence of sophisticated behaviors resulting of the catalytic activity induced by immobilization of Acetylcholinesterase enzyme into an artificial membrane enzymatically inactive. The results make possible the characterization and prediction of system behavior as well as a qualitative analysis of the system stability via bifurcation diagrams. The model is then extrapolated to a distributed system in order to analyze its spatio-temporal behavior. Numerical results make possible the assessment of the concentration profile of the chemical species on space and time, what is not directly observable by biochemists. Finally, we study a model developed for a network of Sinorhizobium meliloti bacterium and propose an algorithm for intracellular fluxes estimation

At first in the microtexte, we observe the relationship between iteration and punctuation. The pronouns, the question of reference and the rythm are also examined for they involve repetition. Subsequently in the macrotexte, the set of themes and the novelistic composition show the importance of iterative process : the Simon's vision as well as the structure are based on it. The analyse of rewriting leads to a typology of variations. Full textThe aim is to develop a novel theory of robust active failure detection based on multi-model formulation of faults. The original method was already proposed by the Metalau group of INRIA. We have continued to work on the extension of this approach to more general cases. The focus is on the effects of feedback on the previous approach. The multi-model approach is still used to model the normal and the failed systems; however the possible advantages of using linear dynamic feedback in the construction of the auxiliary signal for robust fault detection is considered and the results are compared to the previously developed open-loop setup. An original formulation of the active fault detection problem using feedback is developed. The norm of the auxiliary signal is considered as a possible cost criterion. Also, we have considered a more general cost function that has already been used for measuring the performance of feedback configurations in Linear Control Theory. We have given a complete solution to this problem. In order to find a complete solution, several mathematical problems are solved

Full textTo be used as phase change material in a secondary refrigerant, a hydrate must enclose a high dissociation enthalpy, at a temperature adapted to the application (positive for air-conditioning) and a pressure suitable for an industrial facility. Moreover, the two-phase mixture must present good conditions of flowing and heat exchange. A dynamical set-up with a stirred tank reactor with a loop of circulation, placed in a thermostated room, was developed for the study of carbon-dioxide-hydrate slurries. In this set-up, one protocol was carried out: by cooling of a water-CO2 solution, generating slurries hydrate rates 25 %, conveying a high latent heat (374 kJ.kg-1). A study of CO2 hydrate formation kinetics was lead in the tank reactor and the results showed the CO2 hydrate formation kinetics is 2 %.h-1 for a pressure, temperature and a stirring rate at the begin of 3 MPa, 12°C and 1042°rpm and a temperature of the chiller about -1°C. A study rheological allows the development of an empirical Herschel-Bulkley-type correlation as a function of the hydrate rate was achieved for rheological characterization of the fluid behavior. Full textThis thesis in visual arts, inspired by and worked upon through the author’s own artistic practices, proposes a study of the loop in contemporary art. With its curvilinear progression, its selfgenerating form, its repetition, reciprocity and feedback, the loop is examined through the question of its montage, through the exchange and critical narrative that it initiates. This study relates to the art of today, questioning the intentions which direct the elaboration of the loop and the mechanisms which govern its structure. We put the period, from the second half of the 20th century to the start of the 21st, into perspective with several forays into art history. The philosophy of the Enlightenment, the industrial revolution, modernity and post-modernity all punctuate this exploration. This back and forth guides our investigation into three key themes: typology, temporality and space, which, in turn, act as the backbone of this thesis. Acting as markers, an attentive observation of the following objectsand equipment: belt, hoop, band, film, reel, rope or carousel, this study informs the loop via the media of video, cinema, painting, installation and performance. The artistic corpus, by way of the creation of a dialogue between contemporary works (Francis Alÿs, Shilpa Gupta, Rodney Graham, Roman Ondák, Dan Graham, Ryan Gander, Harun Farocki, Simon Starling) and those which preceded them (Giotto, Gustave Courbet, Louis Aimé Augustin Le Prince, Buster Keaton, AlfredHitchcock), allows us to analyse according to what methods the loop amounts to a poetic arrangement

Full textThe purpose of this thesis is to better understand the confining strong interaction. To do so, we have investigated the results obtained with the use of the Wilson loop in Quantum Chromodynamics (aera law, Migdall-Makeenko equation,. . . ) and we have determined the relativistic interaction potential between the two constituents of a quarkonium, bound state of a quark and a antiquark, in the large color number limit and at large distance. Especially, we have shown that the evolution amplitude of a meson can be expressed as a fonctional expansion with respect to the Wilson loop. We have obtained two independent et compatible wave equations : in the Breit approximation, the dynamics is then described by a covariant three-dimensional Breit equation with only vector potentials which are expressed as functional derivatives of the minimal surface associated with the Wilson loop. We have then carried out a certain number of applications: We have determined the large distance contributions of the meson Hamiltonian in the non-relativistic limit. We have shown that the Breit equation reduces to a generalized Pauli-Schrödinger equation containing, in addition to a static confining potential, interaction terms that depend on the spins of the quark and of the antiquark and on the orbital angular momentum of the flux tube. Their structure appears to be in agreement with phenomenological data. We have verified in the equal masses case that the meson spectrum yields, in the high-energy regime, linear Regge trajectories whose the slope increases about 20 % when we take into account the flux tube

Full textThis thesis addresses the problem of generating compact code from software pipelined loops. Although software pipelining is a powerful technique to extract fine-grain parallelism, it generates lifetime intervals spanning multiple loop iterations. These intervals require periodic register allocation (also called variable expansion), which in turn yields a code generation challenge. We are looking for the minimal unrolling factor enabling the periodic register allocation of software pipelined kernels. This challenge is generally addressed through one of: (1) hardware support in the form of rotating register files, which solve the unrolling problem but are expensive in hardware; (2) register renaming by inserting register moves, which increase the number of operations in the loop, and may damage the schedule of the software pipeline and reduce throughput; (3) post-pass loop unrolling that does not compromise throughput but often leads to impractical code growth. The latter approach relies on the proof that MAXLIVE registers are sufficient for periodic register allocation ; yet the only heuristic to control the amount of post-pass loop unrolling does not achieve this bound or leads to undesired register spills. This thesis gathers our extensive research results on the open problem of minimal loop unrolling allowing a software-only code generation that does not trade the optimality of the initiation interval (II) for the compactness of the generated code. At the first part of this thesis, we propose to use the remaining free registers after periodic register allocation to relax the constraints on register reuse. We show that the problem of minimal loop unrolling arises either before or after software pipelining, either with a single or with multiple register types. We provide a formal problem definition for each situation, and we propose and study a dedicated algorithm for each problem. These solutions are implemented within an industrial-strength compiler for a VLIW embedded processor from STMicroelectronics (ST2xx processor family). Our large-scale experiments on multiple benchmarks family (LAO, FFMPEG, MEDIABENCH, SPEC2000, SPEC2006) demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed unroll degree minimisation, both in terms of code size and in terms of initiation intervals, along with satisfactory compilation times. Nevertheless, some loops still require high unrolling degrees even after our minimisation. At the second part of this thesis, we study, for these occasional high unrolling degrees, the potential for live range splitting to reduce kernel loop unrolling with details of how to introduce new move instructions without inscreasing II. In fact, extra move instructions can be added where the software pipelining schedule leaves some free units to carry the information between the splitted variables. Concerning the experimental evaluation, we carefully studied the efficiency of this method in standalone context. The different experiments show that the exhaustive solution for splitting variables produce dramatic positive results

Full textSince the Islamic Revolution (1979), through ideological domination and Islamisation, the educational system in Iran was set out to form a "new man". This thesis studies the attempts of the educational system during the past 34 years to establish and perpetuate ideological domination, and then analyzes the values transmitted by the curriculum through textbooks and schooling and defines the characteristics of this "ideal man".However, the resistance of students in school and youth in society shows that the educational system has been unable to form its "ideal man". Much resistance appears where the vulnerabilities in the dominant ideology arise. In addition, forming individuals in a society using a monotype model has been impossible during this period. Since the model is subjected to all the consequences of modernity and globalization. The opening of a window into other worlds, unofficial media, the Internet, satellite television channels, virtual social networks, diasporas and intellectuals have all played an important role in this resistance. But in the 21st century, in a society with a closed socio-political structure and generating alienating circumstances, the attempt to copy the model imposed by the dominant ideology can only lead to dichotomy. This study concludes that alienation in its various aspects appears as the consequence of a monotype model imposed on students by the dominant ideology. Thus, the educational system has contributed in the reproduction of general alienation in this society

Full textThe two world conflicts that opened the 20th century radically transformed the contemporary world, giving rise to major social, political, artistic and philosophical revolutions. A trend of humanist revival in search of new values for Humankind was born. Among the many formulations was that of the work and thought of the French writer Jean Bruller, also known as Vercors. Having designated Human being at the centre of his intellectual, artistic (notably literary) project, Vercors questioned himself about the existence of the human species, its nature, its place in the world, the definition of human being, based on what is specific in being human. This doctoral dissertation investigates the different theoretical, ethical and aesthetic forms that this idea of human being takes in the author’s productions, in order to analyze the distinctive features that link and differentiate it from alternative contemporary humanist thinking. The proposed corpus is built around theory-fiction dialogue, which also takes into account the artist’s first drawings. Closely linking life, work, thought and sociohistorical context makes it possible to reconstruct and comprehend the author’s project, as well as to define the concrete role of the literary text in the vercorian reflection. This system of interrelations also benefits from the multidisciplinary approaches that the writer brings to his work (history, philosophy, anthropology, biology and psychology). The thesis, as a whole, serves as a paradigm to explore the different variations existing in his fiction, where Vercors’ thought on Humankind is most compellingly developed

Then, we analyse its use in all the social types of the seal in which Hairy Men hold armorials; and its transposition, whether in pair or in couple, in the minor arts but above all in the architectural décor. This typology enabled us to choose our examples on the edges of the kingdom, in Brittany and Flanders, then amongst printers. As Scots who emigrated to France and servants of the Crown, Yvon du Fou and Charles II de Chaumont d’Amboise, are perfect illustrations of the systematic use of the Wild Man. Finally, we compare the various formats of the heraldic works in the French public, private and religious places, with our European neighbours’ practices, despite the depredations that occurred in various periods, linked to either politics or ignorance

Full textThe hematopoisis is a complex process where the proliferation and the differenciation of pluripotent hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) lead to the formation of mature and functional blood cells. The maintenance of HSCs population is sustained by a mechanism of renewal. Numerous cytokines are involved in the regulation of early phases of hematopoiesis. These cytokines are secreted by the cells of the microenvironment, and the HSCs themselves. The role of IL-6 and its receptors in the maintenance of the HSCs is studied herein. The stimulation of gp130 by the fusion molecule linking IL-6 to sIL-6R (the hyper-interleukin-6, HIL-6) enhanced the expression of mIL-6R on HSCs. This stimulation increases the production of sIL-6R only on the population of 5-FU-resistant HSCs. However, same responses were not obtained by stimulation with others IL-6 family members, such as LIF or IL-11. Production of sIL-6R is stimulated by PMA and is inhibited by TAPI, demonstrating that an ADAM is involved in shedding of mIL-6R. The production of sIL-6R by shedding of mIL-6R was also increased by transient stimulations with HIL-6. Gp-induced-activation of ADAM is partially mediated by PI-3K pathway. Thus, all these data pleading to the existence of a mIL-6R and sIL-6R based autocrine loop. The functionality of this loop has been tested in culture of gp130-stimulated HSCs. Nevertheless, there was no increase in the number of progenitor derived from stimulated HSCs. This observation has been confirmed using the simulation of informatic HFPN models. In contrast, the LTC-IC frequency increases in long-term culture of HSCs in presence of stromal cells and HIL-6, suggesting the important role of the microenvironment in the functionality of the auto-paracrine circuit of regulation. The effect of HIL-6 is inhibited by TAPI, underlining the importance of the trans-signalling in the maintenance of HSCs. The cell-cycle analysis of HSCs shown that HIL-6 has no effect in the entry in cell-cycle, suggesting preferential role of HIL-6 in the cell survival rather than in the proliferation

Full textThe main idea in our study is the deification of man kind. By his double origin, divine and human, the man have to know the shortest distance between two points : the + pygmy-self ; and the + divineself ;. Crossing this distance requires a complete transformation, in order to reach what gibran calls the goddess. All the principal axes of gibran's thought have been deliberately studied in our thesis in the first part we explained gibran's conceptions of man kind. God and the divine self. The second part is consecrated to the process of deification and its impact on the social, religious and philosophical visions of gibran. In this part we explained the mystical tendency of the lebanese poet, his belief in the unity of existence as a way toward the deification. We studied also the elements which lead man kind, according to gibran, from the human to the divine condition. These elements are : the love, the desire, the pain, the madness, the beauty and the nature. At the end of this second part we explained gibran's vision about the death, the soul's immortality and the reincarnation. The third part of our study was reserved to explain the influence of the bible, the muslim philosophers of the middle ages and the european thinkers on gibran

Full textReverse logistics network design is a crucial issue in which it is important to take into account the selection of the most appropriate partner with sustainability concerns. This partner can be a supplier or a third-party reverse logistics provider (3PRLP). However, research works that consider reverse logistics (RL) network design, partner selection, and sustainability issues simultaneously are rather limited till now. This research work proposes an integrated sustainable approach for partner selection and closed-loop supply chain (CLSC) network configuration, particularly in the case of outsourcing reverse logistics process to third-party provider. We propose a trade-off between sustainability criteria for both supplier and 3PRL provider selection. A multi-objective mixed-integer programming (MILP) model is also proposed to configure CLSC network and to select the best partners. The model minimizes the total cost of sourcing, and the total greenhouse gas emissions, while it maximizes the total value of reverse logistics, and the number of new job opportunities. A numerical example is also presented to illustrate the proposed approach

Full textCapillary pumped loops are passive and efficient heat transport devices between two distant heat sources. This work deals with the characterization of the capillary pumped loop behavior for its use in an aeronautics context. The scientific approach combines experimentation and modeling: a model has been developed in parallel with an experimental test bench. During the measurements and visualizations campaigns, we found: (i) a strongly fluctuating flow, due to the development of a hydrodynamic instability within the condenser, (ii) that the loop dynamics during increasing or decreasing heat loading is dominated by the distribution of the working fluid in the loop, (iii) that this period is the most critical in terms of mechanical solicitations because we observed mass flow rates exceeding for one order of magnitude the value reached at steady state regimes, (iv) that the performances keep unchanged during the tests with tilt angles up to 20° despite influence on the phase distribution and heat transfer coefficients. Simulations have been compared with experimental results. We found that the model satisfactorily predicts the transient behavior of the loop during increasing heat loads. The model has been used to test the loop response subjected to extended operating conditions and different configurations (tilt angle, respective position of components, condenser performances,. . . ) demonstrating that it is a useful tool for studying the CPLs integration in terrestrial vehicles

Full textCurrently, there is a renewed interest in studying extracellular field potentials (EFP). This signal and the oscillations associated with it are the basis of many studies on the mechanisms underlying cognitive processes in cortical networks. Three key functional roles of oscillations recorded in the nervous system have been proposed: i) encoding specific information ii) modulation of attentional states of the brain, but also iii) creating dynamic assemblies. Although the interest for EFP continues to grow, the interpretation of these signals are sparse. During my prject I focused on the interpretation of EFP patterns under stress and uncertainty and specifically studied neocortex, hippocampus (HPC) and the ventral tegmental area (VTA) signals in these two experimental settings.Firstly, we recorded and analyzed the activity in the dopaminergic circuits including the VTA, PFC (prefrontal cortex) and OFC (orbitofrontal cortex) in a probabilistic decision-making paradigm for mice. We demonstrated that the PFC, OFC and VTA circuit shows specific time-dependent activation sequences depending on the anticipated choice per trial. Secondly, I was interested to measure, in awake animals, the effects caused by a stressful situation at different ages on the PFC and HPC signals. Our results demonstrate major effects at the level of the power spectral analysis. We identified that particularly high amplitudes in the range (7-12 Hz) vary according age and context (rest, stress)

Full textAndrew Jackson has long been either mythified or rejected. Today, he remains a controversial figure and his role in the period called Jacksonian Democracy" is still debated. However, this dissertation deals with Jackson's private concerns and personal traits rather than his public record. What are examined here are his intimate and private affairs: family ties, his relations with a wife he regularly deserted in favor of commercial, political, or military endeavors, her despair expressed in her correspondence, not to mention Jackson's attention to his ward's education and his warning them against the wiles of the world. Another, fundamental, highly representative element of Southern everyday life, is the plantation. Slavery, a deeply personal concern, together with his treatment of Indians, constituted Jackson's dark side. The plantation, both mythical and banal, is here observed as the place of interaction between the master's interests and the slaves' ability to create some sense of community. At the other end of the spectrum of power, Jackson's relations with the Tennessee elite are defined in terms of both rivalry and alliance. The code of honor, which still ruled the 19th century Southern gentleman's world, was embodied in the quarrel. Constant balancing between the code and his personal interpretation of it shaped not only Jackson's identity and attitudes, but also the caste he dominated. Public and private spheres are thus examined at many different levels in society, providing an environment that helps define Jackson's personal world. His correspondence is the source of this enquiry, the place where that world comes alive. Letters reveal feelings, facts, attitudes which make up what is most sought after in this work, the stuff humans are made of

Full textAlbert Camus himself distinguished three phases in his work: that of the absurd (awareness of non-meaning of life led Camus to the idea that man is ‘’ free to live without appeal’’, take a risk to pay the consciences of his errors and must exhaust the joys of this earth. Life accepts the non-sense of the world and finds happiness in even the absurd. Camus says that the absurd is not in man nor in the world, but in their common presences, in their ‘’ confrontation’’ and defines it as ‘’ indifference to the future and the passion to exhaust all that is given’’), that of the revolt: (revolt is considered by him as the only tenable position to face the absurd. It appears with the freedom and passion, as a valid solution and capable of ensuring justice. It alone can assure emotional action capable of overcoming unproductiveness and anxiety created by the absurd), that of the love (Camus meant here the love of man as he is, with its forces and intelligence as well as its limitations and weaknesses. Camus expresses his affection and solidarity towards man. This is not only a classical humanism which expresses itself, not just a moral position, but the position of a sensitive man. Camus still tries to approach these ‘’ few things’’ this ‘’obscure part’’ which is in every man, and himself in particular. This study examines the remarkable prose of Camus that concerns the issue of man, who progresses and changes over the years; attachment to the service of justice, relating to man whose idea is not separable from that of happiness; adherence to human and humanist ethics which are pushing the human mind to perfection. His art is not ‘’ a solitary joy’’. Camus formulates his expectation from man because art is the way of expression of communion between people

Full textAmyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is an adulthood neurodegenerative disease characterized by loss of motor neurons. Considered as a purely motor pathways disease, some investigations brought evidences for early and parallel sensory pathway impairments and for interneuron impairments that could precede and lead to motor neuron hyperexcitation. Although motoneuron activity is closely associated to sensory afferents and interneurons, their effects onto motoneuron excitation and their involvement in impairment spreading have not been studied yet. The aim of this thesis was on one hand, to confirm and characterize anatomically and functionally sensory impairment at spinal and cortical level in patients at the early stage of the disease and, on the other hand, to assess effects induced by these inputs onto motoneuron activity and through cervical and lumbar interneurons. Research project originality was to focus on proximal muscles clinically unaffected of which « presymptomatic » motoneurons receive sensory inputs from distal muscles clinically affected. We showed that: 1) despite their reduction, sensory inputs induce an hyperexcitation of motoneurons; 2) excitability and state of these motoneuron pools are normal through corticospinal afferents but are hyperexcited by peripheral afferents; 3) activity of cervical and lumbar propriospinal system and recurrent inhibition are reinforced

Full textThe debate about universal human rights finds in Iran a particular echo, that of a Muslim scene of theatre where the discussion is tolerated while being restricted, where all ideas criss-cross and are piled up until creating a new vision of human rights. The challenge which arises is the conciliation between the Iranian legal system resting partly on Islamic law and universal human rights. How do human rights and international standards coexist? There are many issues at stake: Iranian law is based upon Islamic law while international texts are secular. There is consequently a conflict of legitimacy and legality between the two sets of laws. Then, Iran bases its legal specificity on cultural relativism: it is a Muslim country with cultural traditions that are strongly anchored and the enforcement of international standards is a threat. Iran set up a protective legal barrier resting on a Shia Islamic interpretation Shari'a. The matter is also legal: While not respecting international standards of human rights, Iran is in permanent violation of international law of human rights. Meanwhile Iran is still a party to these international documents. This double attitude symbolizes an Iranian paradox: Iran is caught between tradition and modernity. The Iranian specificity becomes then a challenge for universal human rights. How do we reconcile the two legal worlds? The debate in Iran is public. Iranian civil society plays a role by discussing the enforcement of universal human rights. This effervescence demonstrates that there is a real need in Iran to have a position reflecting peoples' wish. It is then that the country would be ready to deal with the principle of universality
