Full textTo be confronted with a life threatening disease and having to go through mastectomy means changes to a woman's life. The breast is a symbol for femininity and having to lose that symbol can affect the woman's gender identity. Changes in life may affect quality of life. The purpose of this study was to highlight women's quality of life when they have gone through a mastectomy. The study was conducted as a literature review and current scientific research has been used. The result showed that a mastectomy can affect a women's quality of life in a negative way. Women of all ages who have gone through mastectomy showed less social-, emotional-, and physical function. Mastectomy is associated with less sexual attraction which affects the quality of life. Both younger and older women felt like their body image was affected when mastectomy had been performed. To raise their quality of life, social support showed to be one of the main factors. The woman's experience of anxiety when she is confronted with a life threatening disease will have a long-lasting effect on her subjective well-being. Anxiety initially predicted poorer quality of life. Future nursing research should focus on women's unique quality of life and investigate differences in prescribed nursing interventions related to mastectomy in order to present evidence based nursing interventions to reduce women's suffering and improve quality of life.

Full textBackground: Endometriosis is a gynaecological disease that affects a large number of women throughout the world. These women are often treated by the lack of knowledge, distrust and normalizing attitudes. That causes delay in diagnosis care and treatment, which creates unnecessary suffering. Nurses have an important function in the treatment of these women by supporting the woman, create a good alliance and provide relevant information. Aim: The aim of the study was to describe women's experiences of quality of life in endometriosis and to examine and describe the articles included data collection methods. Method: Literature study has a descriptive design. Data were collected through Medline / PubMed and CINAHL and twelve articles were found, all with qualitative approach. These articles were the basis for this study. Results: Endometriosis results in a greatly reduced quality of life that affects their partner, relationship and social life, such as work, school and hobbies. A lack of knowledge in health-care leads to normalization and delayed diagnosis that creates unnecessary suffering for these women. Many of the women created their own strategies to deal with their symptoms in daily life. All twelve articles with descriptive design have collected data by interviewing women about their experiences of living with endometriosis. Conclusion: Endometriosis affects significantly the women's daily lives, and all the relationships, in a negative way. Their health is affected physically, psychologically and socially with the result that they get their quality of life greatly reduced. Significant financial savings can be made by increased knowledge in the field and diagnosis at an earlier stage. Suffering from Endometriosis would be reduced, and the quality of life for those women’s will significantly increase.

Full textIntroduction Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in Sweden. For non- metastasized cancer, the treatment is always surgery where part or the entire breast is surgically removed combined with radiation therapy, hormonal and chemotherapy. It can be very difficult for women to accept breast loss and mastectomy is often experienced by women as a trauma and gives a diminished body image. Aim Purpose was to describe women's quality of life and psychosocial condition after mastectomy. Ethical considerations have been made. Method Method vas a systematic literature study based on 14 quantitative articles and one qualitative article. The articles were reviewed for quality, analyzed and discussed and the results summarized in different themes. Results The analysis resulted in two main categories: Quality of life and psychosocial consequences. The psychosocial consequences after the mastectomy was described in three sub-categories namely: poor body image, decreased sexual desire, as well as anxiety and depression, which in turn led to reduced quality of life. Conclusion Reduced quality of life, poor body image and psychological problems such as depression, anxiety and impaired sexual life was found in the majority of women who underwent mastectomy. It is therefore important that health professionals look to the individual's needs and increase their knowledge and understanding to provide the right support and offer various proper services with the aim to reduce psychological stress and increase quality of life.

Full textMyocardial infarction is one of the main causes of death among men and women in the world today. Cardiovascular deaths are declining among men but not among women. Suffering from a heart attack, is a threat to the lives of people affected, and continues to affects him and his family for a long time. Women who are diagnosed are on average 75 years and has a history of other diseases in the background when they suffer a heart attack. Men are on average seen 10 years younger than women and have more often experienced a previous heart attack, when they suffer a recurrence. When women suffer a heart attack, they tend to exhibit more atypical symptoms, which means that they delay seeking medical care. Women suffer more side effects than men, as it has been researched more on men of the pharmaceutical industry and cardiovascular health. To answer the purpose of this study was to describe the way women's quality of life differs from men after a heart attack, a literature review was done. The results showed: that the quality of life after a heart attack differs between men and women. Within the dimensions of physical function, role physical functioning, bodilypain, social function and emotional role function, which is part of the instrument SF-36, women rated their quality of life worse than men.

Full textBackground: Endometriosis is a chronic disease which causes episodes of inflammation in women’s genital- and reproductive organs. The most common symptoms in women with endometriosis are abdominal pain, pelvic pain and pain during intercourse. The debute of symptoms vary, but several studies claim that symptoms often occur during adolescence. Hormone treatment is often used in women with endometriosis and in other cases surgical treatment is indicated. Today, knowledge about endometriosis is neglected and there are incorrect conclusions about the cause of the disease. Aim: To describe women's experiences of quality of life in correlation to endometriosis. Methods: The study was conducted as a literature review, the result is based on 16 scientific articles. Results: Women with endometriosis had reduced quality of life in different contexts, thereafter subcategories were identified that described in which context women had reduced quality of life in. Subcategories identified were: Relationships – Partnerships and Family, Social Isolation, Fertility, Age-related impact, Everyday life, Gaps of knowledge in health care, Transmission of information and Delay of diagnosis. The reason for the reduced quality of life and what permeated the subcategories was mainly pain of different types. Conclusion: Much speaks for that women with endometriosis have a lower quality of life compared to women who do not suffer from the disease. The reduced quality of life can often be linked to a lack of knowledge about the illness for health care professionals or that as a health care professional, you are not aware of the symptoms of these women which, in the long run, lead to a reduced quality of life.

Full textAbstract: Breast cancer is a severe disease and the most common among women. Approximately 7,000 new cases are detected each year and the mortality reaches about 1500 annually. One woman in ten under 75 years of age can expect to suffer and the quality of life can change in the time of diagnosis and treatment. Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate women´s experiences of quality of life after completing treatment for breast cancer. Methods: The method used was a systematic literature review and the results are based on ten scholarly articles. The articles were found after searching the PubMed and CINAHL databases, and have both qualitative and quantitative approach. Results: The results indicate that the quality of life can change with the disease and its treatments. To have support from professionals or a family member was related to an increased quality of life, with the exception of married women. Younger age, unemployment or suffering from a more advanced stage of cancer was associated with a lower experienced quality of life. The type of treatment, anxiety and cancer and-/or treatment-related symptoms such as pain, fatigue and cognitive impairments was also associated with lower quality of life. Women also felt that the lack of information affected their ability to cope with their situation. Conclusions: The quality of life in a woman undergoing treatment for breast cancer is influenced by physical, psychological, economic and social aspects. Keywords: breast cancer, experience, quality of life, treatment

Full textAim: The purpose of this study was examine womens’ experience living with a endometriosis diagnosis, the physiological and psychological impacts, as well as their experience and perception of health care encounters. Background: Endometriosis is a chronic condition which occurs when cells, naturally found in the endometrium, start to grow elsewhere in the body and form cysts. The characteristic symptoms associated with the condition is chronic pain, infertility and atypical menstruation bleedings. Methology: A review of literature research found through two different databases; PubMed and CINAHL. The articles chosen for this study were 12 original research articles, written in English with a qualitative approach. Results: Three themes were presented in the study; physiological consequences endometriosis has on women's quality of life, psychological consequences endometriosis hason women’s quality of life, as well as the women’s experiences from health care encounters. The findings show that endometriosis affected different aspects of a woman’s life negativelywith chronic pain, friction on relationships, reduced ability to execute everyday activities and perform at work, reduced psychosocial wellbeing and social isolation. Conclusion: The impact on women’s quality of life was greatly reduced due to their inabilityto live fully, related to all the different physiological and psychological consequences that can manifest having endometriosis, as well as bad experiences with healthcare encounters. Women seeking medical care would not get the help and attention they needed in order to live a good and livable life, due to the occurring knowledge gap, the lack of resources and norms of being a woman.

Full textBackground: The most common forms of gynecological cancer are cervical, ovarian and corpus cancer but tumors can also develop in the vulva, vagina and fallopian tubes. Symptoms include irregular vaginal bleeding, pressure, weight loss, edema and pain. Surgery, radiation and chemotherapy are used as treatment methods and can be aimed at curing or for palliative purposes. Side effects influence both mental and physical wellbeing, sexuality and social aspects of life. Quality of life is a concept that is widely used to evaluate the quality of care in healthcare even though there is no consensus on the definition of the term. Aim: To describe women’s life and quality of life after completion of treatment for gynecological cancer. Method: A literature review based on twelve qualitative articles. Data collection was conducted via CINAHL, PubMed and PsycINFO. Content analysis was carried out with inspiration from Graneheim and Lundman’s method. Results: Four categories and nine subcategories were identified. Physical changes with subcategories Infertility, Gastrointestinal problems, Lymphedema. Close relations with subcategories Sexuality, Family and family life. Emotional experiences with subcategories Fear, worry and anxiety as well as New perspective. The role of healthcare staff with subcategories Emotional support and Information. Conclusion: Various factors affected women's life and quality of life after gynecological cancer. Infertility resulted in grief and sadness and gastrointestinal problems affected daily living and social situations. Decreased libido and pain during intercourse had a negative impact on the women’s intimate relationships. The women experienced lack of support and information from healthcare personnel and thought their wellbeing would have improved if this was adequate. A number of women lived in fear of cancer recurrence but they had also gained a new perspective on life which meant that they appreciated life and people around them more. Keywords: Experiences, gynecological cancer, qualitative research, quality of life, survivor.

Full textBackground: Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women and in Sweden approximately 7000 new cases are diagnosed every year. The primary treatment for breast cancer is surgery with possible subsequent radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Following mastectomy all women in Sweden are offered a surgical breast reconstruction. This is an optional choice, but many women choose reconstruction in order to feel more feminine, more confident in their bodies and their sexuality, and as a more "whole" woman. It is mainly the younger and single women who chose to do a reconstruction. Purpose: This study examines the health related quality of life within women who did or did not undergo breast reconstruction, depending of choice, age and how they experienced the healthcare support. Method: Qualitative interview study with seven women who participated in the study. The interview contained eight open questions concerning psychosocial situation related to body image, sexuality, decision-making and support needs. The interviews were recorded, transcribed and analysed with Graneheim- and Lundmans content analysis. Results: The analysis from the transcript was categorized into 2 groups: Quality of life and the breastcancer surgery. These two groups were divided into psychic health, body image, psychosocial health, and experience of the health care and the choice of reconstruction. Both the women who chose to do the reconstruction and those who do not, rate their health related quality of life as high. The women who underwent reconstruction rated their quality of life higher after the reconstruction than before. The decision regarding reconstruction was based on personal thoughts, and women who did not do reconstruction wished to focus on wining their fight against cancer and that thought that breast reconstruction was a major surgery with a high risk of complications. Decision about reconstruction was based on feeling truncated without breasts and with the new breast they feel feminine and whole again. Conclusion: Whether the women have made a reconstruction or not they are satisfied with their individual choices and rate their quality of life as high. The women also have experienced the communication to health care staff as good, but they even experience a huge need for follow-ups.

Full textBackground: Every year approximately 8000 women in Sweden are diagnosed with breast cancer and therefore it´s the most common form of cancer in women. The foremost treatment is surgery where the most common treatment is mastectomy, where the entire breast is surgically removed. The loss of one or both breasts often provides physical and psychological consequences. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe women’s experiences of their health related quality of life and psychosocial health after mastectomy with or without reconstruction. Method: A descriptive study with qualitative method was used. A strategic selection was conducted where five women who have undergone reconstruction or not, with varying ages and different marital status were selected. Semi-structured interviews were conducted and analyzed with content analysis. Result: The change in self-image can lead to limitations in everyday living. The women are reminded every day about the physical change and experience this as psychologically stressful. However in most cases the woman perceives the diagnosis as an awakening and now sees life as a new opportunity. All of the women experienced a lack of information provided by health care and support offered to them after completion of treatment. Conclusion: Women have different perceptions about quality of life. Some women feel that the altered appearance is an obstacle in everyday life. These women have a great need for information and support even a long time after completed treatment, this places high demands on the health care professionals in these areas.

Results: The results are presented through the following themes; experiences of physical limitations, experiences of psychological changes, experiences of social limitations and changes, experiences of limitations on work and education and experiences of existential changes. As it turned out, endometriosis had a big impact on all aspects of life. Conclusion: In summary endometriosis affects all aspects of the women's lives. The majority of women experienced that the disease had a negative effect on their physical, psychological and social life, work and existential questions. Furthermore, more qualitative research needs to be done to further investigate how women experience life with endometriosis. This is needed to gain more knowledge about the disease and therefore enable improvement in the diagnosis, the healthcare and the life quality of these women.
