Full textCompanies are constantly faced with making decisions regarding their choice of financing and these decisions result in the company’s capital structure. The capital structure has been studied for a long time and several theories have emerged. Still to this day there’s no theory that can explain the capital structure in a satisfying way. Since there are no clear signs that an optimal capital structure exists nor how one would look, the capital structure can vary. This study has its foundation in two of the most well-known theories that try to explain capital structures, the trade-off theory and the pecking order theory. This cross-sectional study examines how profitability, growth, size, tangible assets, liquidity, non-debt tax shield and industry affect capital structure. The focus lies on the Swedish market and intends to generalize about listed Swedish companies. The result of this paper contributes to an increased understanding of capital structure but we are far from a complete comprehension of the subject. The conclusion of this study partially differs from previous research as it finds support for both theories. However none of the theories are applicable on the Swedish market as a whole which suggests that further research is required along with the addition of new ideas. This paper is written in Swedish.

Full textToday, corporate social responsibility (CSR) is an important concept to society and corporations alike. To achieve legitimacy from society and its stakeholders, it is important for corporations to be able to show what CSR efforts they are making. There are multiple channels a corporation can choose from to communicate such matters, one of which is social media, a platform that has grown extensively over the last few years. Corporations’ CSR disclosures on social media has not been researched in a Swedish context before, which this study attempts to remedy by analysing the largest social media platform; Facebook. The purpose of this study is to explain what influences Swedish listed corporations' CSR disclosures on Facebook. With the help of economic and system-oriented theories as well as earlier research, hypotheses are constructed with a deductive approach. Quantitative secondary data in the form of companies’ Facebook entries and economical information is then collected through a cross-sectional design and analysed through content analysis. The results of the study show that company size, concentrated ownership and industry influence corporations’ CSR disclosures on Facebook. Consequently, bigger companies and companies with dispersed ownership disclose more CSR information on Facebook than smaller companies and companies with concentrated ownership. Also, companies in consumer goods and services disclose less CSR information than IT companies.

Full textTitle: Human Capital accounting impacts on Financial Profitability. A quantitative study of Swedish listed Medicine- and Biotechnology companies. Level: Final assignment for Master’s Degree in Business Administration Authors: Helena Andersson & Sandra Barkstedt Supervisor: Andreas Jansson Date: May 2017 Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to study whether Human Capital accounting in Swedish listed medicine and biotechnology companies is financially profitable. Method: This study has, based on a positivist research philosophy, with a deductive approach, and adopted a quantitative research strategy. Data have been retrieved from the studied companies own annual reports for the creation of a comparison matrix as well as from Thomson Reuters DataStream. Data analysis has been performed by descriptive statistics and multiple regression analyzes in the statistical program SPSS. Result & Conclusions: The result indicates that there is no statistical connection between Human Capital accounting and Financial Profitability in Swedish Medicine and Biotechnology companies. The study, on the other hand, shows that the recognition of Human Capital accounting for these companies has increased, which is explained by other motives. Suggestion for further research: Suggestions for further research are primarily to examine Human Capital accounting and other aspects of Profitability. Additional suggestions are to examine whether Human Capital accounting results in Financial Profitability in other industries. Key words: Human capital, Human Capital accounting, Financial Profitability, Financial Profitability measures, voluntary accounting

Full textAbstract Aim: The purpose of this study is to examine whether there has been a change in the reporting of social and environmental disclosures, i.e. sustainability reporting, in annual reports of listed swedish corporations and to examine factors that can explain the sustainability report. Method: The study is based on positivist research philosophy and uses a deductive approach. In order to achieve the aim of the study a quantitative method has been used through a content analysis and hypothesis tests. The population consist of 142 companies 2012 and 160 companies 2015, all listed on Nasdaq OMX Stockholm. In total 302 annual reports were examined. The data that has been used are secondary data and the information from annual reports, databases as well as books was then set against previous research and theories. Results and conclusion: The result of the study shows that it has been a change in the reporting of social and environmental reporting in annual reports. Our results indicate that a positive change of sustainability reporting can be seen. However the difference is relatively small. The study’s statistical tests indicate that there is a positive significant correlation between sustainability reporting and company size, profitability and time. In addition the study shows that business sector has an impact on the sustainability reporting but only a few are significant. Ownership structure and women in the board shows no significant results with the sustainability report. Contributions of the thesis: This study's practical contribution is to chart if there has been a change over time of this reporting in the annual reports of swedish listed corporations. The study shows that there has been a change between 2012 and 2015. This result can be of interest for corporations that uses sustaniability reporting. The theoretical contribution of this study is that it contributes with further research on variables that affect the production of sustainability reporting. Where profitability and company size have an impact on this accounting method. Suggestions for further research: Suggestions for future research is to have a wider range between the years in order to be able to read a more accurate difference. Another suggestion is to investigate the reporting on companies separate sustainability reports. A further proposal is to do a similar study when the new law enters into force regarding sustainability reporting and becomes visible within the reports.

Full textAim: The relationship between Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Financial Performance (FP) has been studied by many scientists, as well as the relationship between FP and ownership concentration but the results have been conflicting. Few studies have been done regarding all these dimensions on which influence ownership concentration has on CSR and FP, therefore this study aims to explain how the ownership concentration in European public companies affect the relationship between CSR and FP. Method: This study has a deductive approach within the positivist research tradition. The study is based on 169 listed companies from Europe over the years 2009-2017. The data has been collected through the database Thomson Reuters Datastream and analyzed through IBM SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences). Result & Conclusions: The result of this study reflect that companies in Europe act in a market with a high ownership concentration where they spend a lot of resources on CSR, which improves their FP. This can be deduced from the conclusion; a higher ownership concentration weakens the positive relationship between CSR and FP. Contribution of the thesis: This study provides a unique contribution as it is the only study that investigates the impact of ownership concentration on CSR and FP across several countries and industries. The increased interest in CSR and the legislation that exists since 2014 can create agent problems that get worse when the owner concentration is high. This study intends to provide practical contributions to companies and organizations in Europe, where they observe this agent problem that complicates the work of CSR and, in the worst-case scenario, may cause a deterioration in the FP. Suggestions for future research: Further studies may use a different dimension of ownership concentration to see if it can have a different impact on the results of the study. Another proposal is to measure all dimensions of CSR separately to clarify whether any variable within CSR affects FP more than anyone else. As a final proposal, the study's combined FP measure can be used in parallel with the profitability measure Tobins Q to verify the result.

Full textBackground and problem discussion: In revenue recognition, there’s a big problem about when a revenue should be recognised and to what amount. The new revenue recognition standard enters into force 1 january 2018 and supersedes all the previous standards that treated revenue. IFRS 15 focuses on a balance-sheet oriented approach compared to the previous standards that focused on an income-statement approach. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to contribute an overview on how companies are affected by IFRS 15. This study also aims to investigate the revenue streams of the companies concerned by IFRS 15 by explaining why a certain revenue streams are affected and not affected. Method: The study is based on a quantitative approach where we collected empirical data from publicly traded companies’ financial reports. We also collected the companies’ analysis of IFRS 15 to analyze the revenue streams. In the study, we used the variables net sales, gross margin and operating margin to measure the effects of IFRS 15. Result: The study’s results showed that most the companies wouldn’t have a quantifiable impact by IFRS 15. Only a small portion of the population in the study received a quantifiable impact by IFRS 15. A large proportion of the population were classified as statistical loss since they haven’t started to analyze the effects yet.

Full textAbstract Title: The deviation between actual and expected CSP and the effect on company value - A quantitative study of 185 public companies over a ten year period Level: Student thesis, final assignment for Bachelor Degree in Business Administration Author: Anton Tideman and Moa Jakobsson Supervisor: Jan Svanberg Date: 2019 – March Aim: Prior research have studied the effect that CSP has on company value with both positive and negative results. With the purpose to find a more reliable measuring variable the study has developed AECSP which symbolises the deviation between actual and expected CSP to find a solution to the different results earlier research has presented. The study aims to find a positive relationship between AECSP and company value Method: The study adopt a positivistic research philosophy with a deductive approach and a longitudinal design over ten years. The secondary data is collected from Thomson Reuters Datastream and have therafter been analyzed and processed in the statistical program SPSS. Result & Conclusions: The results of the study gives evidence that a deviation between actual CSP and expected CSP exists. Also that AECSP is a reliable and significant measurement in the measuring of CSPs effect on company value and that a positive relationship can be proved. Contribution of the thesis: The study’s development of the variable AECSP has contributed as a new way of measuring the relationship between CSP and company value. The study has also contributed by reducing the information asymmetry between companies and stakeholders. Suggestions for future research: One suggestion for future research is to treat a short time period to generate a larger amount of data. Another suggestion is through qualitative interviews reduce the information asymmetry between companies and stakeholders. Nilsson, Susanne, and Erika Moberg. Thesis, University West, Division of Business Administration, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hv:diva-1506.
Önder, Lucy, and Nathalie Garcia. Thesis, Mälardalen University, School of Sustainable Development of Society and Technology, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:mdh:diva-1425.

Full textFor a long period, preference shares have been unusual in the Swedish market. However, the share is becoming more common and more of these are coming into the stock market. Because of the unusual nature of preference shares on the market, there is almost no research on them. Earlier research argues that many shareholders and a diversified ownership base lead to lower volatility by improving the quality of the price signal. In this paper, this hypothesis is examined by using Swedish ownership data on listed preference shares. Previous research has studied normal shares, but this study is instead investigating whether preference shares with its ownership structure does influence the volatility. In this study, except for the more traditional variables such as the number of owners, institutional ownership and foreign ownership, the use of ownership width is also addressed as an independent variable in relation to volatility. This study conclude that the ownership structure influences the volatility in preference shares.

The study is quantitative and secondary data in the form of sustainability reports have been collected from companies' websites. A longitudinal design has been used where data from 2012 and 2016 have been reviewed. Result & Conclusions: The study's results show that sustainability reporting differs between the industry and the finance sector. The result also shows that there has been a change in reporting over time. Suggestions for future research: Future studies could investigate other sectors and limit themselves to one size. It could also be a study focusing on causal relationships to see what the differences may be. Contribution of the thesis: The contribution of the study is that it compares the differences between only two sectors in the Swedish market since previous studies have been conducted in other countries and in several industries. Key words: CSR, GRI, sustainability reporting, indicators, sectors, time.

Full textThe aim with the study is to study if there exists a relation between the number of women on board and the sustainability report in companies that´s listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange. Earlier studies show a positive relation between the number of women on board and the sustainability reports. Therefore have we chosen to study this in companies listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange. The study is based on positivist research philosophy and uses a deductive approach. We have used a quantitative method and used data from annual reports and Retriever. The population consists of 318, the final sample is 278 companies all listed at the Stockholm Stock Exchange. The data is analysed with the help of SPSS and we have done a correlation analysis and several regression analysis. The study could not find any relation between the number of women on board and the sustainability report. We also could not find any relation between the number of women on board and the choice of ISO or Global Compact. However, we could find a positive relation with GRI. The study could not find a conclusive result to show critical mass.

Full textBackground: The environmental reports are a way for companies to describe their environmental efforts. The environmental reports have become increasingly important for the companies, as the environmental issues have become a priority issue to the general population. Companies now have to show that they can take an environmental and social responsibility in order to build credibility and trust of the society. Purpose: In order to give the reader a picture of how and why environmental reports looks like they do and what companies associated with a negative impact on the environment, chooses to focus on in their environmental reports. Method: A qualitative study based on the legitimacy theory and the institutional theory is conducted in this thesis. A review and examination of literature, scientific articles, environmental reports and engaging interviews with people who have qualified skills in the subject was made. Conclusion: This study demonstrates the importance of the environmental reports for the companies associated with significant environmental impacts. It highlights the importance of being transparent and demonstrates to stakeholders and the public the importance of taking environmental issues seriously. The study also shows how external factors like expectations and institutional pressures affects the general design of the environmental reports. The study also shows what companies are focusing on in their environmental reports such as; energy efficiency, emission reduction, environmental costs and the establishment of environmental goals and strategies.

Full textAbstract Aim: The purpose of this study is to investigate whether there is a relationship between intellectual capital and financial performance in companies and whether there is a relationship between human capital and financial performance. Method: The study adopts a quantitative method that examines Swedish listed companies on Nasdaq OMX Stockholm and NGM Equity. A longitudinal design has been used with a time period of five years where data is collected from 297 companies. The study is based on secondary data from the companies' annual reports obtained from the Retriever Business database. Data have been analyzed through univariate analysis, correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis in the statistical program SPSS. Result & Conclusions: The results of the study show that there is a significant positive relationship between intellectual capital and financial performance. The results also show that there is a significant positive relationship between human capital and financial performance. Contribution of the thesis: The study provides evidence that a positive relationship is obtained between intellectual capital and financial performance as well as between human capital as its own component and financial performance. Furthermore, results are also given that the relationships do not differ significantly, which indicates that human capital is the contributing component in the entirety of intellectual capital. Suggestions for future research: A proposal for further research is to choose a different measure for the variable financial performance than the measure represented in this study. A limitation in this study is to generalize the results to smaller companies and hence a further proposal for further research is to study smaller companies. A final proposal is to take out all three components of intellectual capital and further investigate how they individually affect performance within companies.

Full textTitle: "Gender distribution in boards and it’s relation to dividend level in listed companies, A quantitative study conducted in Swedish publicly listed companies" Level: Final assignment for Bachelor Degree in Business Administration Authors: Mathias Ehrlin and Elvira Estmyr Supervisor: Peter Lindberg Date: 2017 - September Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate if there’s a relation between the level of dividends and the proportion of women in listed companies’ boards and if the level of dividends is related to other factors including firm specific- and board specific variables. In previous research, the majority of firm-specific factors have been found to be related to the dividend level. On the other hand, there is less research for board-specific factors, our unique contribution is to investigate Sweden, which is one of the countries with the highest level of gender distribution in the boards of listed companies. Method: The study applies quantitative method with deductive approach. Data from 2014 is collected mainly through the sources Thomson Reuters Datastream/Eikon, Retriever database and the books "“Styrelser och revisorer, i Sveriges börsföretag”". At the statistical tests and analysis, the data was split up. Bivariate analysis and regression analysis is carried out on all companies in our study and also these tests are executed on only those companies that have made a dividend payout for the period. Standard multiple regression is applied. Finally, we reject or confirm hypotheses based on the significant results we receive. Result & Conclusions: The study shows a positive correlation between profitability and dividend level when analyzing all companies in our study. This result is well in line with previous research. Other variables do not reach significance, which may depend on the size of the population and the observation period that this study takes into account. No relationship can be confirmed or rejected for the proportion of women in boards and the dividend level. The aim of this study is therefore left unanswered.Suggestions for future research: The study leads to increased curiosity for continued research in the field and to analyze more variables and on a larger scale. For example, more board-specific variables can be investigated such as the size and gender of the Board of Directors to see if there is a relationship between these and the dividend level. It would also be interesting to have broadened the study to investigate the impact these factors have on dividend policy and other possible aspects. Contribution of the thesis: The contribution the thesis entails primarily is that it provides more intel to the fact that future research should be of a larger scale, as this would then hopefully give more significant results. In addition, the study provides an understanding of how a change in profitability impacts the dividend level. In our opinion, we provide greater understanding of the subject for future research but also for private investors and companies. Keywords: Dividend, Dividend level, Company, Proportion of Women, Board, Board of directors, Sweden, Listed companies, Board-specific factors, Firm-specific factors, Board composition.
