Abstract. Ion chromatography measurements of 1730 snow and firn samples obtained from three short cores and one pit in the Vostok station area, East Antarctica, allowed for the production of the combined volcanic record of the last 900 years (AD 1093–2010). The resolution of the record is 2–3 samples per accumulation year. In total, 24 volcanic events have been identified, including seven well-known low-latitude eruptions (Pinatubo 1991, Agung 1963, Krakatoa 1883, Tambora 1815, Huanaputina 1600, Kuwae 1452, El Chichon 1259) found in most of the polar ice cores. In comparison with three other East Antarctic volcanic records (South Pole, Plateau Remote and Dome C), the Vostok record contains more events within the last 900 years. The differences between the records may be explained by local glaciological conditions, volcanic detection methodology, and, probably, differences in atmospheric circulation patterns. The strongest volcanic signal (both in sulfate concentration and flux) was attributed to the AD 1452 Kuwae eruption, similar to the Plateau Remote and Talos Dome records. The average snow accumulation rate calculated between volcanic stratigraphic horizons for the period AD 1260–2010 is 20.9 mm H2O. Positive (+13%) anomalies of snow accumulation were found for AD 1661–1815 and AD 1992–2010, and negative (−12%) for AD 1260–1601. We hypothesized that the changes in snow accumulation are associated with regional peculiarities in atmospheric transport.

Abstract. Detailed volcanic record of the last 900 yr (1093–2010 AD) has been received using high resolution (2–3 samples per accumulation year) sulfate measurements in four snow/firn cores from the Vostok station area, East Antarctica. Totally, 33 volcanic events have been identified in the record, including well-known low latitude eruption signals found in many polar ice cores (e.g., Pinatubo 1991, Agung 1963, Krakatoa 1883, Tambora 1815, Huanaputina 1600, Kuwae 1452), however in comparison with other Antarctic sites the record has more events covering the last 900 yr. The strongest volcanic signals occurred during mid-13th, mid-15th and 18th centuries. The largest volcanic signal of Vostok (both in sulfate concentration and flux) is the 1452 AD Kuwae eruption. Average snow accumulation rate calculated for the period 1093–2010 AD is 21.3 ± 2.3 mm H2O. Accumulation record demonstrates a slight positive trend, however sharply increased accumulation rate during the periods from 1600 to 1815 AD (by 11% from long-term mean) and from 1963 to 2010 AD (by 15%) are typical features of the site. Na+ record shows strong decadal-scale variability probably connected with coupled changes in atmospheric transport patterns over Antarctica (meridional circulation change) and local glaciology. The obtained high resolution climatic records suggest a high sensitivity of the Vostok location to environmental changes in Southern Hemisphere.

Abstract We establish the Bonnet–Myers theorem, Laplacian comparison theorem, and Bishop–Gromov volume comparison theorem for weighted Finsler manifolds as well as weighted Finsler spacetimes, of weighted Ricci curvature bounded below by using the weight function. These comparison theorems are formulated with ϵ-range introduced in our previous paper, that provides a natural viewpoint of interpolating weighted Ricci curvature conditions of different effective dimensions. Some of our results are new even for weighted Riemannian manifolds and generalize comparison theorems of Wylie–Yeroshkin and Kuwae–Li.

In this study, we consider fractional-in-time Venttsel’ problems in fractal domains of the Koch type. Well-posedness and regularity results are given. In view of numerical approximation, we consider the associated approximating pre-fractal problems. Our main result is the convergence of the solutions of such problems towards the solution of the fractional-in-time Venttsel’ problem in the corresponding fractal domain. This is achieved via the convergence (in the Mosco–Kuwae–Shioya sense) of the approximating energy forms in varying Hilbert spaces.

Abstract:
Abstract. Volcanic eruptions are an important cause of natural climate variability. In order to improve the accuracy of climate models, precise dating and magnitude of the climatic effects of past volcanism are necessary. Here we present a 2000-yr record of Southern Hemisphere volcanism recorded in ice cores from the high accumulation Law Dome site, East Antarctica. The ice cores were analyzed for a suite of chemistry signals and are independently dated via annual layer counting, with 11 ambiguous years by the end of the record. Independently dated records are important to avoid circular dating where volcanic signatures are assigned a date from some external information rather than using the date it is found in the ice core. Forty-five volcanic events have been identified using the sulfate chemistry of the Law Dome record. Comparisons between Law Dome and NGRIP (Greenland) volcanic records suggest Law Dome is the most accurately dated Antarctic volcanic dataset and allows for the records to be synchronized with NGRIP, leading to an improved global volcanic forcing dataset. Volcanic sulfate deposition estimates are important for modeling the climatic response to eruptions. The largest volcanic sulfate events in our record are dated at 1458 CE (Kuwae, Vanuatu), 1257 and 423 CE (unidentified). Using our record we refine the dating of previously known volcanic events and present evidence for two separate eruptions during the period 1450–1460 CE, potentially causing confusion in the assignment of the Kuwae (Vanuatu) eruption to volcanic signatures during this time interval.

Au milieu du XV e siècle, au centre du Vanuatu, survient l’éruption du volcan Kuwae. Ce cata-clysme aux conséquences globales donna lieu, à l'échelle locale, à la dislocation d’une île mythique en un archipel — les îles Shepherd. Depuis des dizaines de générations, les descendants du peuple pré-éruptif se transmettent et confrontent leurs versions du mythe de Kuwae, notamment dans le cadre de querelles foncières. Ces discours légitimateurs, pourvus d’une efficacité sociale au moment même de leur énonciation, convoquent une panoplie de preuves, en vertu d'une certaine logique de vérité historique. Dans les années 1960, ce sont ces discours historico-mythiques, issus des anciennes chefferies, qui permirent à l’archéologue José Garanger de découvrir des sépultures, corroborant ainsi la fiabilité historique de la tradition orale. À partir de trois genres de discours distincts sur le passé, recueillis sur le terrain en langues namakura et nakanamanga, nous proposons de documenter et d’étudier la portée socio-historique du mythe de Kuwae
In the middle of the 15th century, in central Vanuatu, the Kuwae volcano erupted. This cataclysm with global consequences gave rise, on a local scale, to the dislocation of a mythical island into an archipelago — the Shepherd Islands. For dozens of generations, the descendants of the pre-eruption people have been transmitting and confronting their versions of the Kuwae myth, particularly in the context of land disputes. These legitimizing discourses, endowed with a social efficacy at the very moment of their enunciation, summon a panoply of proofs, by virtue of a certain logic of historical truth. In the 1960s, it was these historico-mythical discourses from the old chiefdoms that enabled the archaeologist José Garanger to discover burials, thus corroborating the historical reliability of the oral tradition. Based on three distinct genres of discourse on the past, collected in the field in the Namakura and Nakanamanga languages, we propose to document and study the socio-historical scope of the Kuwae myth

Nous envisageons d’étudier l’histoire des populations indigènes du nord-ouest de l’Amazonie depuis le début du XVIIe siècle jusqu’au milieu du XVIIIe siècle. Plus exactement, notre objet d’étude concerne le rôle et l’évolution des chefferies indiennes dans le double contexte des relations interethniques et des entreprises coloniales européennes. Au cours de cette période, les grandes puissances européennes — France, Angleterre, Espagne, Portugal et Hollande — se sont employées à accroître leur domaine colonial en Amérique du Sud. C’est ainsi qu’on assiste, d’une part, dès le début de la conquête des terres américaines, à un processus de transfert dans les aires de colonisation des conflits politiques qui opposent les grandes puissances. D’autre part, les missionnaires portugais ont implanté systématiquement des villages de catéchèse au sein des populations indigènes pour ouvrir la voie à la colonisation portugaise et à une première urbanisation de la vallée de l’Amazone. Toutes ces interventions tirent parti des réseaux politiques indigènes et tiennent compte des hiérarchies internes et des positions de pouvoir autochtone qui existaient au moment de l’arrivée des Européens. Missions et expéditions militaires entraînèrent des guerres en faisant des chefferies indigènes des médiateurs préférentiels
We decided to study the history of the indigenous populations of Northwestern Amazonia from the beginning of the XVIIth century till mid XVIIIth century. More precisely, we analyzed the role and the evolution of the Indian chiefdoms in the double context of interethnic relations and European colonial enterprises. During this period, the great European powers – France, England, Holland, Spain and Portugal – strove for increasing their colonial possessions in South America. That is why with the beginning of the conquest of American lands, on one side we can observe that political conflicts opposing the great powers in Europe are exported into the colonized areas. On the other side, Portuguese missionaries systematically developed catechizing villages among native populations in order to promote Portuguese colonization and a first urbanization of the Amazon Valley. All these interventions took advantage of political networks, inner hierarchies and power positions existing among native societies before the arrival of the Europeans. As a matter of fact, missions and military expeditions provoked continuous wars transforming Indian chiefdoms into preferential mediators

Uchambuzi wa sera na maandiko mengine yanayohusiana ama na lugha na elimu au lugha na utamaduni ulifanyika na kuwasilishwa kinathari. Vilevile, maudhui ya kozi za taaluma za Kiswahili zinazofundishwa Chuo Kikuu cha Dar es Salaam (CKD) hususani katika Taasisi ya Taaluma za Kiswahili (TATAKI) yalifanyika. Matokeo ya uchambuzi huo yamedhihirisha kwamba lugha ya Kiswahili imevuka mipaka ya kufundishwa kama somo na kuwa lugha ya kufundishia taaluma za Kiswahili katika ngazi za shahada ya awali, umahiri na uzamivu. Hii ina maana kuwa lugha ya Kiswahili inatumika katika uzalishaji wa maarifa yanayotokana na tafiti. Tafiti ni sehemu ya masharti ya kukamilisha shahada za umahiri na uzamivu katika vyuo vikuu duniani. Licha ya ombwe la sera ya lugha ambalo ni kikwazo kikubwa cha upanuzi wa matumizi ya Kiswahili katika elimu ya juu nchini, mtazamo wa makala haya ni kwamba Kiswahili kinatumika kufundishia. Wito wa makala haya ni kwamba wigo wa matumizi ya Kiswahili kufundishia elimu ya juu upanuliwe katika nyuga zingine za kitaaluma baada ya kuonesha ufanisi katika taaluma za Kiswahili. Wito huu unatolewa kutokana na urazini thabiti kwamba Kiswahili bado hakitumiki kufundishia elimu ya sekondari. Maoni ya makala haya ni kwamba kutokutumika kwa Kiswahili katika ngazi hiyo, ni tatizo la wafanya maamuzi kuhusu lugha na elimu. Hatua madhubuti inayopaswa kuchukuliwa kwa mahali pa kwanza ni kuipa lugha ya Kiswahili hadhi ya kuwa lugha ya kufundishia elimu ya juu na elimu ya sekondari. Hatua ya pili ni kuhakikisha kwamba katiba ya nchi inaitambua lugha ya Kiswahili kuwa ni lugha ya Taifa. Hii itasaidia kuhalalisha upangaji wa rasilimali za kuendeleza lugha hiyo na kuchochea wigo mpana wa kufundishia kwa maslahi ya taifa.

Abstract:
Kwa miongo mingi, matamko ya kisiasa na maandiko mengi yameshuhudiwa yakitolewa kuhusu nafasi, maendeleo na matumizi ya lugha ya Kiswahili nchini Tanzania. Mpaka sasa matamko na maandiko hayo hayajaweza kujenga mazingira fanisi na wezeshi kwa maendeleo ya lugha ya Kiswahili; pamoja na matumizi yake kwa kiwango stahiki na tarajiwa kwenye sekta mbalimbali za kimaendeleo ikiwemo sekta ya elimu. Makala hii inaeleza kuwa pamoja na vidokezo vya utashi mwema wa kisiasa unaoakisiwa kwenye matamko ya viongozi waandamizi wa serikali pamoja na maandiko mbalimbali ya kutukuza lugha ya Kiswahili na matumizi yake katika elimu ya Tanzania, bado ni dhahiri kuwa ukuu wa uwepo wa sera ya lugha hauepukiki. Makala hii inahoji kwamba bila kuwepo sera fanisi na wezeshi kuhusu lugha na lugha ya Kiswahili kimahsusi, maendeleo na matumizi yake katika elimu hayawezi kufikiwa kwa ufanisi na kiwango kinachotarajiwa, yaani kutumia Kiswahili kufundishia katika ngazi zote za elimu nchini. Data za makala hii zimetokana na usomaji wa maandiko mbalimbali na maoni ya watu kwenye makongamano yaliyofanyika nchini Tanzania kuhusu maendeleo ya lugha ya Kiswahili na matumizi yake. Makala hii inahitimisha kuwa kuwepo kwa sera mahsusi ya lugha katika taifa la Tanzania, kutaweka mifumo ya kisheria na kanuni lazimishi za kutoa haki na fursa za kisheria kwa Watanzania, vyombo vyenye mamlaka, kama vile wizara na bunge, kuweza kupanga, kuhoji na kufuatilia utekelezaji wa sera hiyo na shughuli za serikali na vyombo vyake. Kwa hivyo, wapenzi na wadau wa lugha ya Kiswahili hawapaswi tu kuishia kulalamika kuhusu nafasi finyu inayotolewa kwa lugha hiyo, bali wanapaswa kwanza, na kwanza kabisa, kupigania bila kuchoka uwepo wa sera ya kisheria mahsusi ya lugha katika nchi ya Tanzania.
