Abstract:
In questo elaborato verrà preso in esame il genere della Trümmerliteratur, la “letteratura delle macerie”, una corrente tedesca sviluppatasi nel secondo dopoguerra, di cui raramente si sente parlare in Italia. Oltre ad una parte teorica, verrà anche presentata una proposta di traduzione per tre racconti scritti da due autori, Hans Bender e Wolfgang Borchert. I primi due capitoli sono dedicati ad un'introduzione al genere, al contesto storico e alle opere prese in esame, e il seguente ad una panoramica sulla traduzione letteraria. Dopo le proposte di traduzione, si trova un capitolo che analizza le strategie, difficoltà e problemi traduttivi sorti durante il processo.

Abstract:
Saad Yahya, born in Zanzibar in 1939, studied architecture and town planning in Great Britain and in Canada; since 1968 he has lectured at the University of Nairobi. He portrays everyday life of typical inhabitants of Zanzibar and Nairobi, displaying a penetrating understanding of their problems and of their state of mind, linked with a remarkable stylistic ability. He is an acute observer who presents his characters with humour and irony, but also with a profound insight. Furthermore, in his stories, under the surface of everyday activities there is always some hidden antagonism or passion, never spelled out, but only alluded to. Several years ago Yahya sent me the manuscript of two other stories which I hoped to translate and publish in Italy, but ultimately it was not possible. I have included one of them, called Nyoko-nyoko and consisting in five typewritten pages, in the syllabus of my literary courses in Naples and in Paris. It is a rare - if not unique - Swahili story in which the main character is a Mzungu, a white man: the British governor of an imaginary East-Aftican country called Nyalia, who has to abandon his post suddenly for unspecified reasons. He regrets to must leave the country he has learned to know and to like; however, behind the mask of liberality and tolerance is hidden a self-conceited racist. The story describes his last day in Africa after a long stay.

Eine Herausforderung des abendländischen Denkens, donde el fenómeno de la paradoja se describe como parte integral de la postmodernidad y de la obra de Borges. Estas constataciones me llamaron la atención en esta formulación tan general ya que la paradoja se encuentra en los presocráticos - como los participantes del volumen muy bien saben -, y las descripciones y razones que los autores dan para su lugar privilegiado en la postmodernidad como en la obra de Borges me parecieron dignas de algunas breves reflexiones.

We shall investigate the use of Swahili slang in Freddy Macha`s tiny collection of short stories Twen `zetu Ulaya (DSM 1984), and especially in his short story Check-bob This is arguably the only epistolary short story in modern Swahili literature; in fact, epistolary novels are uncommon in anglophone Afiica as a whole. In this narrative two former lovers show abuses on each other and their four letters - two by each character - unfold the story of a selfish young woman who shamelessly exploited her boyfiiend and the manner in which he paid her back with her own coin. It is interesting to note how the same events are presented from two different perspectives and hence evaluated differently.

Il presente lavoro di tesi si occupa di illustrare la narrativa della scrittrice berlinese Judith Hermann da una duplice prospettiva: da un lato, mediante l'analisi delle più interessanti figure femminili presenti nelle sue opere, dall'altro attraverso la proposta di traduzione di alcuni racconti contenuti nella sua ultima raccolta. Il primo capitolo è dedicato al genere letterario prediletto dall'autrice, la Kurzgeschichte, di cui si descrivono il percorso evolutivo e le caratteristiche salienti. Oggetto del secondo è invece il contesto storico-letterario che ha permesso la formazione artistica di Hermann e che ne ha determinato la produzione narrativa. Il terzo capitolo presenta nel dettaglio la biografia dell'autrice, offrendo inoltre una descrizione dei singoli testi e dello stile che li contraddistingue. Segue il quarto capitolo, che esamina i Frauenbilder più affascinanti tratti dalle sue opere, in particolare nei loro rapporti con la vita della stessa Hermann e della sua generazione. Infine, l'ultimo capitolo racchiude la proposta di traduzione dei racconti selezionati, con relativo commento sulle difficoltà specifiche e sulle strategie individuate in fase di trasposizione in italiano.

This article will present a short story which appeared in the newspaper Mzalendo on the 15th January 1978, but it took twenty-six years before it was published in a book. Presumably it was written in the same period as both the play Kaputula la Marx and probably also as some of Kezilahabi’s poems from the second collection Karibu ndani (1988). It is a period of his most critical works. In Mayai – Waziri wa Maradhi the author blames, in a highly symbolic manner, the leading classes of his country who became rich at the expense of common citizens during ten years of Independence, symbolized by ten emaciated ghostly children.

L’œuvre de l’écrivain suisse Peter Stamm se caractérise par sa diversité. Elle s’adosse à plusieurs genres littéraires. Elle comporte, à côté de romans, de pièces, d’ouvrages jeunesse et de textes poétologiques, une part importante de nouvelles. Classique par ses thèmes essentiels, les relations interhumaines, l’amour, la mort, la prose brève de l’écrivain de langue allemande né en 1963 est intrigante par ses effets, puissants. Les histoires de Peter Stamm ont pour cadre le monde contemporain, la vie au quotidien, présentés sous des traits obéissant à une esthétique mimétique. Cette image spéculaire du réel est contestée de l’intérieur par un réseau obsédant d’éléments imaginaires. Le cours des choses données à voir est ainsi travaillé par des forces contraires. Elles coexistent. La topographie de l’œuvre atteste elle aussi d’une concomitance des contraires. L’ici et l’ailleurs s’y côtoient continûment. Dans le registre de la temporalité, ce sont encore des conceptions ou des catégories opposées qui sont mises en tension : la linéarité et la circularité du temps, l’instant et l’éternité. L’univers des personnages est également marqué par la coexistence de profils très variés et apporte un nouveau témoignage du degré d’ouverture de l’œuvre. Le schéma logique du paradoxe, associant les contraires, figure l’élément structurant majeur de la production nouvellistique de Stamm. Les modèles génériques de la Kurzgeschichte et de la Novelle, théoriquement incompatibles, cohabitent au sein de l’œuvre de la même manière. Ses textes portent, plus généralement encore, la trace manifeste d’un héritage double, renvoyant à la fois au romantisme et à la Modernité. The work of the Swiss writer Peter Stamm is characterized by its diversity. It relies on several literary genres, including novels, plays, youth books, poetological essays and an important set of short stories. The essential themes are classical : the human relationships, love, death. The brief prose of the German-speaking writer, born in 1963, strikes the reader by its powerful effects. The stories of Peter Stamm take place in the contemporary world, in the everyday life. They are told in the terms of a mimetic aesthetic. The specular image of reality is challenged from within by a haunting network of imaginary elements. Hence, the way of things offered to see is subjected to contrary forces. They coexist. The topography in the work also testifies that opposites do coexist. The notions of here and elsewhere meet continuously. In the temporal field also, opposite conceptions or categories are put in tension: linearity and circularity of time, present moment and eternity. The category of the characters is also marked by the coexistence of very varied profiles and brings another testimony of the degree of openness of the work. The logical scheme of the paradox, associating opposites, is the major structuring element of Stamm's short stories production. The genre models of Kurzgeschichte and Novelle, theoretically incompatible, coexist in Stamm’s world. His texts contain, more generally, tangible traces of a double heritage, referring to both Romanticism and Modernity. The poetic orientation of Stamm's short stories, the way the texts go, can be grasped by exploring all these areas in friction

This paper explores how some Swahili writers and translators have dealt with this inspiration, the implications for their language use and the way they have interpreted Yusuf as a theme for their writings. After a brief introduction on the importance of the story itself and putting the focus on a major theme of the plot, the following works are discussed: the new Quran translation by Sh Ali Muhsin (1995), a short novel by Mzee Salim A. Kibao (1975), two short stories by Amur bin Nasur il-Omeiri (1894), the utenzi Qissat-il Yusuf (l913) and Abdulrazak Gurnah\'s English written novel Paradise (1995). The paper concludes with the observation that in analyzing how these Swahili writers have integrated the story of Yusuf in their writings, prose as well as poetry, it becomes clear that attempts in defining what is ‘foreign’ (or ‘Oriental’) and what is ‘indigenous’ (or ‘African’) are bound to fail.

Abstract:
Die Arbeit untersucht verschiedene Formen von Figurenrede in narrativen Texten. Als Untersuchungskorpus dienen deutsche und englische Romane und Kurzgeschichten und ihre jeweiligen Übersetzungen. An Hand verschiedener Merkmalsbereiche wird untersucht, wie die Rede von Figuren in narrativen Texten dargestellt wird, welche Unterschiede es zwischen den verschiedenen Darstellungsformen gibt und welchen Wirkung die verschiedenen Formen erzielen. So wird zuerst ein Blick auf die Verbindung zwischen der Figurenrede und dem Erzähltext geworfen. Hier spielen redeeinleitende Verben wie auch syntaktische Kriterien eine Rolle. Danach werden in einem weiteren Teil die Äußerungen der Figuren an sich genauer untersucht. Die Verwendung von Modus- und Tempusformen und Personalpronomina kommt hier ebenso zur Sprache wie die verschiedenartige Verwendung von Lokal- und Temporaldeiktika und der Gebrauch von Elementen der gesprochenen Sprache. Ein letzter Teil betrachtet kurz, wie die Verbindung zwischen einzelnen Äußerungen hergestellt wird. The dissertation examines different forms of character speech in narrative literature. The analysis is based on a text korpus that consists of German and English novels and short stories and their respective translations. By means of different areas of characteristics, these narrative texts are examined in regards to how they present the speech and thought of characters, which different forms of character speech exist and how these different forms of character speech differ in their impact on the text. Thus the first aspect analyzed is the connection between the narration and the character speech. Here, speech initiating verbs as well as syntactic criteria play into the analysis. As a second step, the utterance in itself is examined. The use of mode, tense and personal pronouns is important here as well as the differing use of local and temporal deictic terms and the use of elements of spoken language. In a last part, some aspects of the connection between characters’ utterances are analyzed. The comparison between the two languages German and English leads to the detection of distinctive features of the single languages as well as to similarities
