Full textThe purpose of this study is to examine how social work in an international context is formed by cultures and how this is expressed. Furthermore, the study aims to explore culture competence as is expressed within the social workers themselves and which elements that benefit or alternatively hinder, the international social work. The study has a qualitative approach where semi-structured interviews were conducted with four female respondents. The analyzing method chosen to process data was thematization, where three main themes emerged, indigenization/cultural adaption, cultural competence and difficulties, opportunities and dilemmas. The result shows that all respondents express an indigenization process while describing their work. This is distinguished by the attention all the respondents gave to the functioning cultural structures and how they built the work around this. It also showed through the great emphasis the respondent put on indigenous knowledge. The approach and the main prominent factor which underpins an indigenization process is empowerment. The results show that all respondents express cultural competence. This is observed through the respondents awareness of their own culture's influence, through the respondents evaluation and validation of their own personal knowledge and by the expressed importance of creating relationships. The study shows that an indigenization process is dependent on social workers' cultural competence. Furthermore, the result shows that the collectivist social structure can be seen as both an aid and as an aggravating element. Gender, ethics and morality seem to be the main factors which place social workers in difficult situations. This has also been shown to produce a work approach that is characterized by acting without being seen. Relationships prove to be a facilitating factor, but it is not grown for all good reasons, it seem to be necessary because of the lack of trust people have for international social workers.

Full textThe purpose of this paper was to examine how teaching of history can contribute to an intercultural identity development. My goal was, that on the basis of teachers' concepts and methods, to draw conclusions about how the teacher works with the cultural identity in the subject of history. To answer this, I first look into the theory of cultural identity and the intercultural competence. I also interviewed three teachers working in different municipalities in Sweden with different experiences of students with different cultural backgrounds. The method I have used is a qualitative interview where I interviewed the teachers individually. I asked them both global issues questions and follow-up questions. The answers I have analyzed, resulted in that teachers do not have a conscious strategy of teaching students with different cultural backgrounds in the class. Teachers use different methods such as textbooks, to highlight the different cultures but above all they places the responsibility on the teachers who teach in another mother tongue. In my study it did not revealed any difference in teaching methods from many or few students with different cultural backgrounds and the culture identity is taken for granted. My study shows that teachers belives that the last two centuries of history is most important for the cultural identity but they do not teach in the last two centuries.

Full textBackgroundThe effects of globalization has resulted in many societies today are multicultural. This places greater demands on nurses when they need to face the many and diverse cultures. To do this nurses need to be cultural awareness and competent. Transcultural nursing theory is a prerequisite for being able to satisfy the patients that nurses face in health care AimThe aim of this study is that by the nurses' experiences to identify the factors that affect the care relationship with the patient and family members have different cultural backgrounds. MethodThe study will be a literature review. The content will include qualitative and quantitative research articles and literature. ResultsNurses feel that the greatest obstacle to create a good care relationship is the language barriers and communication problems. Cultural differences can lead to conflict in the care of patients with different cultural background and this is also an imminent problem. The results also draw attention to situations that arise when cultural traditions clash with the hospital rules. Although nurse´s attitudes draw attention and these vary considerably depending on the cultural competence they possess. DiscussionThe main obstacle in healthcare is communication problems; this is discussed from the transcultural nursing theory. Based on the results, the authors discuss nurses' attitudes regarding generalizations, prejudice, racism, stereotypical ideas and exercise of power of patients. This is not acceptable when all people should receive health care at the same conditions.

Full textBackground: Included in the description of competence for registered nurses is catering to the different needs of patients including their cultural needs. This puts high demands on nurses to possess cultural competence in order to master working in multicultural health care. Good communication between nurse and patient is essential in order to provide good care. Aim: To describe the nurse’s experiences of factors affect encounters between a nurse and a patient from different cultures. Method: A literature review with a basis in qualitative analyses was conducted. Results: The results are presented in three main themes and seven sub themes: communication with sub themes language barriers and nurses' experiences of difficulties with interpreters, cultural differences with sub themes various ways of coping with traumatic events, cultural eating habits, the families participation in the care and nurses' experiences of being in the role of carer with sub themes the value of cultural competence and cultural awareness for nurses and ethnocentrism – an obstacle for individualized care. Conclusion: The factors that characterized the multicultural care were often related to nurses’ lack of cultural competence. This study shows that language barriers are the biggest obstacles in encounters with patients from different cultures, which is verified by previous studies. Clinical significance: On a daily basis nurses encounter patients with a different cultural background than their own. This puts increased demands on nurses to possess cultural competence in order to practice professional care regardless of the cultural background of the patient.

Full textSweden has changed from a monoculture society to a multicultural society. A big part of the Swedish population today consists of people with different cultural backgrounds. These past decades the combination of the ageing population with different cultural backgrounds has put new demands on the Swedish health sector. This means that nurses today and in the future will meet patients from different cultures and with various health needs. Putting this in consideration it is significant to highlight the importance of cultural care and cultural competence in nursing encounter. Background: Patients with different ethnicity can be vulnerable because of problems they face when they move in the new country. Cultural differences and language barriers can be one of the obstacles for a patient to receive sufficient health care. Aim: The purpose of this study is to illustrate the importance of cultural care and cultural competence and the effects it has in nursing. Method: A literature study is designed to answer the aim of the study. Nine qualitative scientific articles and one article composed of both quantitate and qualitative are selected for the study. Results: seven categories were identified in the study: Communication and language barriers, education, cooperation with relatives, nurse’s attitudes, cultural competence, patient perspectives and nursing profession role. Conclusion: The result demonstrates categories in the studies that are important in caring for patients from other cultures. The study focused on highlighting the importance of culture in nursing. Most studies where about nurses but in the results section highlights include the patient's perspective, which essay writers feel that it can also help create awareness among all health care professionals in various fields.

Full textBackground: he aim of palliative care is to provide support and relief to dying patients in order to indorse the quality of life regardless of their ethnical background. We are living a multicultural society and nurses today meet immigrant patients who may hold different understanding about health, illness, dying and death. This means that it will impose different or new requirement for health professionals. Aim:The aim of this study is to describe nurses' experiences of caring for migrant patients in palliative care. Method: The method that was used is a literature review. Eleven qualitative articles were included in this study. Articles were searched in the databases CINAHL Complete, PubMed and SveMed +. Selected keywords were ”transcultural nursing”, ”multicultural”, ”palliative”, immigrants”, ”nurse”, ”experience”, “attitude”.These were combined in different configurations to retrieve a search result that responded to the purpose. Results: The result shows that many nurses felt difficulties to approach immigrant patients. Communication difficulties were the common problem in cultural encounters. To being culturally aware, to understand the cultures and customs, and to take the individuality was as nurses important factors that could improve the care of migrant patients. Discussions: The discussion is based on Leininger's theory and how her theory can be of support to assist immigrant patients' cultural needs. Further discussed about which cultural competence is needed for the nurse to be able to provide good transcultural nursing.

Full textSeveral studies have shown that the Swedish labour market for different reasons is characterized by ethnical discrimination and that people who have another cultural background than Swedish are being excluded. Most studies done within this area have been focused on why it is harder for immigrants to enter the labour market and identifying the contributing mechanisms for this phenomenon. Instead the aim of this study was to see how the immigrants view their own cultural identity and background and how they perceive that their cultural competences are being valued when they apply for a job. To examine this, the following problematic was used: How does a person who has been brought up with both the Swedish culture and another culture look at using this as a cultural competence when they apply for a job. Two different theories were then applied to analyze the problematic, Erving Goffman´s theory about Stigma and Norbert Elias theory about the Established and the Outsiders. To carry out the study, a qualitative method with interviews was used and 8 people from 6 different cultural backgrounds participated. The results show that if the knowledge that had emerged from a persons cultural background turned out to benefit that person in his or her work situation than that person was more likely to see cultural background as a competence. Although if the condition was the opposite then there was no need to see it or to use it as a competence. Therefore cultural competence seems to be useful in specific situations and in interaction with certain people or groups of people rather than being viewed as an overall, general competence. To accentuate cultural competence also proved to be difficult due to the stereotyped conceptions about immigrants that exist in society. The conclusion of this study is that emphasizing cultural competence can sometimes benefit a person although there is always a risk that it could lead to increased stigmatization.

Ämnet bör ingå i grundutbildningen för all vårdpersonal.
Since Sweden is a multicultural country with an expanding population we are faced with many meetings in the care of patients of different origin. The aim of the study was to describe the factors that may influence the nurse’s meeting whit patients of different ethnical background than the Swedish. The study was conducted as a literature review in which 14 scientific articles were analyzed. The result shows the different factors that affect the meeting, which may be communication, education, attitudes, environment, ethnicity and religion, were communication is seen as both verbal and non-verbal, and can be seen as the most important aspect of a high-quality patient meeting. The personnel need an understanding of how people of different ethnicity express themselves in order to understand their needs. Knowledge and understanding of other ethnicity is required to provide an adequate care with the best results. Nurses should develop their cultural competency through education. These skills should be learned in the basic education for health professionals. In addition, clinical practical guidelines for multicultural meetings should be found on each nursing ward.

Full textBackground: Sweden is today a multicultural country, which means that nurses in Sweden will meet patients with a different culture. With increased immigration, it is ethically correct to acquire knowledge, expertise and skills about cultural competent care. Understanding cultural diversity is the core of patient-safe care.Aim: The aim of this literature study was to illuminate nurses’ experiences of meeting patients with a different culture.Method: The literature study is based on ten qualitative articles retrieved from the PubMed and Cinahl databases. These articles have been quality-reviewed with the SBU review template and a manifest analysis method is used.Result: Three main categories were identified with subcategories: 1. Failure of communication due to language barrier and use of interpreter, 2. Lack of educat-ion about different cultures and 3. Relatives’ approaches. The results showed that nurses felt that communication was affected by language barriers. This led to po-orer quality of care. Nurses had negative experience in teaching culture on educat-ion and wanted more education in person-centered nursing. Lack of knowledge led to nurses experiencing discomfort and uncertainty at the meeting with the pa-tient. Caring for patients with another culture was described as the most chal-lenging of the nurses when relatives handled death in different ways. Conclusion: Nurses will never be able to acquire knowledge of all cultures in the world and even if you have knowledge of the patient's cultural belonging, nurses can not assume that the patient want to have in a certain way because of this. Providing a person-centered nursing will lead to the cultural needs being taken into account.

Full textBackground: In an intensive care unit the contact with the patients family increases since the patient is seriously ill and often sedated. The family can be seen as a resource, with their knowledge of the patient while they need support as they often are in crisis. Previous research highlights how intensive care nurses experiencing obstacles in meeting with families from diverse cultures where language barriers, understanding of disease and cultural habits complicate the interaction. In order to optimize the interaction with the patient’s family the intensive care nurse has an important role where the need for cultural competence exists. There is a lack of national studies involving intensive care nurses' cultural competence in interaction with families. Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the intensive care nurses' experiences of interaction with relatives from diverse cultures. Method: The study was conducted with a qualitative design and data was collected through nine interviews where a semi-structured interview guide was used. Interviews were analyzed using manifest content analysis. Results: Intensive care nurses' experiences of interaction with relatives are described by four main categories with subcategories: The intensive care nurses cultural competence, communication, families and presence of families. Conclusion: Communication affects all aspects of the interaction with families from diverse cultures. Intensive care nurses require increased knowledge in order to optimize the interaction.

Full textThe purpose of this study was to explore and describe the counselors’ work with deaf and hard of hearing clients. The issues examined were: -How do the counselors describe their work with deaf and hard of hearing clients?-What are the working methods used by the counselors at work with deaf and hard of hearing clients? -What does a cultural competence and a bicultural competence means according to the counselors? The author wanted to illustrate the subject form a perspective in which the professional can communicate in sign language since she believes that this perspective is lacking in the literature. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with three counselors who know sign language and work in the deaf area. The results show that the counselors’ work consists of practical measures and counseling. They have an eclectic approach in the application of the methods, for example that the work can be systematically with cognitive elements. The counselors thought it was important to know sign language and have specific knowledge about the deaf (cultural competence) in order to meet and engage in treatment with deaf clients. They also thought knowledge of the hearing world and the Swedish language was important in order to provide information to the hearing and deaf about one another (bicultural competence). The results also show that the counselors understood that other types of communication than the sign language communication was important to be aware of and to consider, as the non-verbal communication.

Full textThe aim of this study was to examine the research described in scientific literature about the problems affecting the nurse in caring for ethnic minority patients and how to improve the possibilities for the nurse in giving care that is appropriate for this group of patients. The method used was a literature review. Eleven articles, chosen by a literature search in databases on the internet by using words which are relevant for the subject, were used. The results showed that there were numerous problems for the nurse in caring for patients from foreign cultures in the form of language and communication problems, cultural obstacles, and problems and obstacles related to the nurse herself and to the health care system and to the society in general. The study showed that a questionnaire, already developed, could be used in the admission of patients. Measures of priority had to be taken in order to reduce the language barrier that is a major obstacle. Education about cultures showed to be of great importance in giving knowledge about one’s own and foreign cultures. A change of attitude toward cultural curiosity, a more open state of mind and humility was necessary in order to reduce the problems with transcultural care and resources from the society and new priorities from the health care system was of great importance.

Full textABSTRACT Introduction: The statistics centers Agency (SBC) forecasts a growing proportion of people born in foreign countries among the Swedish population. This results in increased cultural diversity in Swedish society and thus more cross-cultural encounters in health care. This study sought to explore primary care nurses’ experiences of encounters with patients from non-Scandinavian cultures, the difficulties they may encounter and what aspects they consider to be important in the care of these patients. Method: A qualitative interview study with descriptive design. Eight primary care nurses who work in various primary health care centers in the Stockholm area and have experience of contact with patients from other cultures than the Scandinavian were interviewed with a semi-structured interview guide. Content Analysis according Graneheim & Lundman was used for data analysis. Results: Primary care nurses perceive these meetings as exciting, challenging and educational. Cultural competence is necessary for work in this area and a need for formal education was identified. Conclusion: The growing cultural diversity in Sweden entails more cross-cultural encounters in health care. Primary care nurses’ perceived difficulties, their negative and positive experiences from these meetings and their approaches to education in the field strengthen the importance of possessing sufficient cultural competence for the care of these patients. This includes the nurse’s learning about the different cultures that are present in the community in which he or she serves and an adaptation of the nursing care based on the patient’s needs. Thus, it is of significance that nurses seek to acquire this competence through formal education.
