Abstract:

Abstract This article is a contribution to scientific research on this aspect of Krystyna Moszumańska-Nazar’s musical output which concerns the connections between her music and other arts, primarily literature and the visual arts, as well as inspirations flowing from nature, religion, philosophy, and broadly understood culture. The article applies structuralist methodology. The starting point for the analysis of the phenomena in question is the musical work itself, its title and its structure, and in the case of vocal-instrumental works - the content and message of the literary text and the person of its author. In the part of the article which deals with the biography and artistic personality of Krystyna Moszumańska-Nazar, as well as by quoting the composer’s own statements in the text, I draw on the personalistic method, especially highly valued in 20th-century philosophy; this method emphasises the role of the human person and personality in analytic work. In the musicological literature to date there exists no separate, large-scale study dedicated to the subject of non-musical inspirations in the works of Krystyna Moszumańska-Nazar. This topic has been tackled, however, in scientific dissertations dealing with various aspects of the composer’s work. For example, inspirations from the sphere of the sacrum have been indicated by Marek Stefański (2011), whereas Ewa Mizerska-Golonek (1992) writes about inspirations derived from the Biblical text in Krystyna Moszumańska-Nazar’s Song of Songs, and Hanna Kostrzewska (2012) discusses painting as a source of inspiration in the composer’s oeuvre. Krystyna Lipka-Sztarbałło’s creation for children bookShaping full personality includes an introduction to cultural messages understanding and requires preparation from the earliest years of life. The use of picture books and book illustrations as the key assumption in visual education of children. Picture books represent the first artistic medium as the primary carrier of aesthetic values and a potential chance to stimulate cognitive, social development of a child. History of Polish picture book dates back to the turn of XIX and XX centuries. However, the realizations gaining more widespread range occurred much later. Krystyna Lipko-Sztarbałło, a graphic artist and an animator of Polish book for children, has been of key importance for the development of Polish picture book for the last twenty-odd years. The significance of the illustrations book in child development is proven by the examples of graphic designs taken from Krystyna Lipka-Sztarbałło’s works.

So-called partisans. Monika Stec in an interview with Krystyna Badurka Referring to the story of her father’s death in 1945, Krystyna Badurka-Rytel discusses the times before and after World War II. Before WWII, her father, Felix Badurka, was a soldier of the Home Army, while after the war he served as the chairman of the National Council and built "the new system". For decades, the Badurka family has been trying to find out who is responsible for his murder.The story of tracking perpetrators is presented against a broader background: the attitude of the population and the Church towards the underground army during and after WWII; the socio-political changes (specifically in rural areas) after World War II, as well as the modern times, in particular the attitude to the past. Krystyna Badurka-Rytel objects to the current Polish political history, because, as she believes, it glorifies the war crimes committed by the so-called “conspiracy” by honouring the participants with books and monuments.

Abstract:

Przedmiotem badań podjętych przez Autora jest zbiorowość polskich potomków Reginy, starszej z dwóch córek króla Zygmunta I Starego i jego długoletniej kochanki – Katarzyny Telniczanki. Do tej pory przyjmowano, że ostatnimi potomkami króla byli żyjący w pierwszej połowie XVII w. jego praprawnukowie – Władysław i Krystyna z Białaczowa Straszowie. Dzięki odnalezionym przez Autora dokumentom udało się jednak ustalić, że matka wspomnianych Władysława i Krystyny Straszów – Urszula z Krezów Straszowa miała siostrę – Zofię, która poślubiła Baltazara Lutomirskiego. Od jej córki, Zofii z Lutomirskich 1o v. Trembińskiej (Trębińskiej) 2o v. Szamowskiej pochodzą wszyscy, tak historyczni, jak i żyjący do dziś potomkowie Zygmunta Starego i Katarzyny Telniczanki. W artykule przedstawiono listę wszystkich descendentów króla żyjących od początku XVI do przełomu XVIII i XIX w. W sumie było to 114 osób (58 mężczyzn i 56 kobiet). Zwraca uwagę to, że do końca pierwszej ćwierci XVII w. potomkowie Zygmunta I i Katarzyny Telniczanki wyznawali kalwinizm. W całym badanym okresie byli to niemal wyłącznie przedstawiciele zamożnej i średniej szlachty. Nie było wśród nich senatorów, a tylko nieliczni pełnili urzędy ziemskie. Autor zwraca też uwagę na to, że sporządzona przez niego lista potomków przedostatniego Jagiellona na polskim tronie nie jest bynajmniej zamknięta. W kilku przypadkach nie udało się bowiem znaleźć źródłowego potwierdzenia na to, czy wspomniana w artykule para małżeńska miała dzieci. Wiele razy Autor musiał zatem poprzestać na stwierdzeniu, że dalsze losy jakiejś osoby są mu nieznane. Otwiera to przed następnymi badaczami szansę na znaczące uzupełnienie jego ustaleń.

Hanna Krall told the story of the issues related to the publication of Sublokatorka, which finally appeared in the Paris-based printing house Libella, owned by Zofia and Kazimierz Romanowicz, in 1985. Abstract:

Article ‘Language etiquette in Letters on exhausted paper by Agnieszka Osiecka and Jeremi Przybora’ is a linguistic analysis of about 100 letters of correspondents. Speech acts presented in this correspondence include: addressees’ formulas, requests, thanks, compliments and farewell acts. This article mentions the names and research of eminent linguists, such as Małgorzata Marcjanik, Krystyna Data or Eugeniusz Grodziński. It is worth noting that the courtesy formulas conceived by the correspondents express the ties between them, creating the appearance of direct contact.

W twórczości profesor Kersten tematyka żydowska zajmowała ważne miejsce. Pojawiła się w prawie 30 różnych tekstach. Były to zarówno fragmenty większych opracowań o powojennej Polsce czy o migracjach, jak i osobne artykuły czy publikacje. Krystyna Kersten zdawała sobie sprawę z trudności towarzyszących badaniom problematyki polsko-żydowskiej. Nie bez przyczyny pierwszym zdaniem jej książki Polacy, Żydzi, Komunizm. Anatomia półprawd 1939-1968 był cytat z artykułu Melchiora Wańkowicza: „tematyka żydowska jest jak ten najtrudniejszy cel na strzelnicy, cel jest ruchomy, ruchem niejednostajnym, strzelca postawiono na wirującym podium i na dodatek dano mu broń strzelającą z odchyleniem”.

Abstract:

Professor Krystyna Kotełko was working as a microbiologist at the University of Łódź (Poland). Her main object of study was the LPS (endotoxin) of opportunistic urinary pathogens from the genus Proteus. She demonstrated, for the first time, the presence of uronic acids and amino acids, as well as two heptoses (L- glycero-D- manno-heptose and D- glycero-D- manno-heptose) and hexosamines in Proteus LPS, and developed a classification scheme of the Proteus LPS into chemotypes. Prof Kotełko also initiated studies on the chemical structure of Proteus O-specific polysaccharide and investigations on the serological specificity of this part of LPS, as well its core region. She also analysed the virulence factors of these bacteria, such as haemolysin and invasiveness.

The essay presents an overview of the most important and most interesting prose and poetry publications that appeared on the Polish publishing market in 2019. The past year belonged mainly to artists perfectly rooted in the readers’ awareness. Particularly appreciated were especially works with underlying autobiographical themes, revisiting the often difficult past to try to sort out the “here and now”, socially engaged books, and books that remind us about shortcomings of the communication code. The authors of the recommended books included: Justyna Bargielska, Konrad Góra, Ewa Kuryluk, Mikołaj Łoziński, Krystyna Miłobędzka, Wojciech Nowicki, Jakub Pszoniak, Dominika Słowik, and Paweł Sołtys.

Abstract:

The paper investigates manners of linguistic description of psychosomatic, autobiographically interpreted experience in contemporary women’s poetry, which is analyzed in the context of the poetics of the moment, with reference to Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht’s concept of “poetry as a mode of attention.” The authoress is particularly interested in the figure of paronomasia, evoking homonymic, parallel spheres: the material and the transcendental one. The article contains close reading interpretations of poems by, among others, Krystyna Miłobędzka, Teresa Ferenc, Bogusława Latawiec and Ludmiła Marjańska, in which paronomasia introduces the reader into a dual dimension of existence, both anchoring the subject in the physical, bodily reality and provoking metaphysical questions.

Abstract:

The research undertaken by the Author concentrates on Polish descendants of Regina, the elder of two daughters of King Sigismund I the Old and his long time mistress – Katarzyna Telniczanka. Until now, it was assumed that the last descendants of the king were his great-grandsons – Władysław Strasz of Białaczów and his sister Krystyna who lived in the first half of the 17th century. Thanks to the documents found by the Author, it was possible to establish that the mother of the above-mentioned Władysław and Krystyna – Urszula Strasz née Kreza, had a sister – Zofia, who married Baltazar Lutomirski. From her daughter, Zofia née Lutomirski 1st married Stanisław Trembiński (Trębiński), 2nd married Franciszek Szamowski, come all descendants of Sigismund I the Old and Katarzyna Telniczanka, both historical and living ones. The article presents a list of all the king’s descendants from the beginning of the 16th to the turn of the 18th and 19th century. In total, it was 114 people (58 men and 56 women). It is worth noting that until the end of the first quarter of the 17thcentury, the descendants of Sigismund I and Katarzyna Telniczanka were Calvinists. They were almost exclusively representatives of wealthy and middle-class nobles. There were no senators among them and only a few were land officers. Yet, the Author’s list of descendants of the penultimate Jagiellon on the Polish throne is by no means complete. In a few cases it was impossible to find a source that would confirm whether a married couple mentioned in the article had children. Many times the Author had to underline that the fate of a certain person is unknown to him. This stands a chance for further researchers to fill that gap.

Abstract:

The aim of the paper is to answer the question: how should one write about masters? It is a question about the narrative strategies of authors writing about masters. The presented analysis is based on five examples: (1) John A. Hall’s Ernest Gellner: An Intellectual Biography, (2) Anita Burdman Feferman and Solomon Feferman’s Alfred Tarski: Life and Logic, (3) Edmund Leach’s Lévi-Strauss, (4) Andrzej Walicki’s Idee i ludzie. Próba autobiografii [Ideas and People. An Attempt at an Autobiography], and (5) Dialogues by Roman Jakobson and Krystyna Pomorska. Each text presents different rhetorical devices, authorial relations to the master, and academic aims. The paper concludes with a critical comparison of the five examples (with the addition of some other minor cases also discussed in the paper).
