Abstract:
In 2012, Barrie Kosky opened his first season as head of the Komische Oper Berlin by staging adaptations of three Monteverdi operas. Alongside using more familiar forms of adaptation, Kosky commissioned Elena Kats-Chernin to adapt the scores, focusing on instrumentation. While opera-to-opera adaptation is comparatively rare today, it has a long and rich history. The article first proposes three categories of reasons for opera-to-opera adaptation in the past. It then sets Kosky and Kats-Chernin’s Monteverdi productions in the context of this largely forgotten history, arguing that a historical awareness allows the Monteverdi Trilogie to be understood in terms of continuity rather than rupture, and clarifies some of Kosky and Kats-Chernin’s approaches in terms of a vigorous but respectful engagement with opera and its place in the modern city, in terms of recuperating aspects of operatic reception now frequently lost, and in prompting a reconsideration of localization and community inclusion. The article argues that the combination of Kats-Chernin’s adaptation for a variety of western and non-western, classical and non-classical instruments, and the visibility of the instrumentalists, including migrant musicians, that Kosky’s staging enabled set the tone for Kosky’s tenure at the Komische Oper, especially in terms of community and inclusion.

Abstract:
When the cross-sectional area of the specimen for the Kosky bar experiment (Split Hopkinson bar) is very small compared to the area of the input bar, most stress wave will be reflected and the signal detected by the strain gage attached on the output bar is very weak. The signal to noise ratio is very significant so that smoothing process is necessary to obtain meaningful results. To improve the design of the experiment, 2-dimensional finite element calculations are carried out for various specimen thickness and length and elastic stiffness of the bar. It is found that short specimen with large contact area and bar material with low stiffness give better results.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper presents an experimental investigation on the usage of annular flow models and correlations valid especially for horizontal tubes to the downward annular flow in the vertical test section. Condensation experiments are performed at the mass flux of 340 kg m−2s−1 during co-current downward condensation of R134a in a vertical smooth copper tube having inner diameter of 8.1 mm and a length of 500 mm. The saturation temperatures are between 40–50°C, heat fluxes are between 12.8 and 45.36 kW m−2, average qualities are ranging between 0.76–0.95. The experimental apparatus are designed to capable of changing the different operating parameters such as mass flow rate, condensation temperature of refrigerant, cooling water temperature and mass flow rate of cooling water etc and investigate their effect on heat transfer coefficients and pressure drops. Considering Chen et al.’s annular flow theory on the heat transfer coefficients that are independent from tube orientation as long as annular flow exists along the tube length, the average predicted condensation heat transfer coefficient of the refrigerant is determined by means of the annular flow model of Kosky and Staub, and Von Karman universal velocity distribution correlations using interfacial shear stress proposed for horizontal and vertical tubes separately. Some well-known annular flow correlations generally used for horizontal tubes in the literature were compared with experimental condensation heat transfer coefficient obtained from vertical tube data during annular flow conditions in the test section.

Abstract:
Elastomers are finding a wide variety of dynamic applications in aerospace, automobile and biomedical industries. The response of these complex material is based on the loading conditions and the strain rate at which the loading is applied. To suit the designer’s requirement, there is an ever increasing need to characterize this application specific, dynamic behavior under high strain rates. The Kolsky bar apparatus, also known as the Split Hopkinson Bar, is the most common apparatus used to test engineering materials at strain rates between 100/s and 10000/s. In this paper a modified Kolsky bar to characterize soft material is numerically modeled using Finite Element Method. The focus of the study is to numerically analyze the modifications made to a conventional Kolsky bar to specifically test nonlinear hyperelastic, soft materials. The challenge for testing low strength materials is the impedance mismatch between the bar and specimen interfaces, which results in a very weak distorted signal. One of the solution is to use a hollow transmission bar instead of solid one. With the use of FEM it can be numerically verified that using a hollow bar increases the amplitude of the transmitted signal up to several times. It is known that the rise time of the elastic wave can be increased by using a copper pulse shaper. Different dimensions of pulse shaper are modeled and the effect on the incident pulse is analyzed. The main aim of this study is to provide a detailed numerical analysis on the testing parameters, and to model one way wave propagation in Kolsky bar experiment for hyperelastic materials. The constitutive equations used to model the parts of the apparatus are also discussed.

Abstract:
Abstract Kolsky Bar systems are subjected to inherent system error as all measurement devices are. This is especially true in that as the bar diameter decreases, the system becomes more sensitive to errors such as friction and misalignment. In this work we present a technique for identifying and quantifying the error of a Kolsky system. We also present a method of generating statistically significant bounds for Kolsky systems so that anomalous or improperly executed experiments can be quantitatively identified. This method does not rely on the intuition of the experimentalist to identify an anomalous experiment. After presenting our method for error identification, a series of tests are performed on 2024Aluminum alloy samples. A method is then presented where the system error, as well as some error contributed by a variance in sample dimension, are removed from the calculated error related to the stress on the samples. The result shows the effective variance of the sample response is quite high in the elastic loading period, but reduces when plasticity dominates. This is attributed to the presence of high frequency content in the travelling elastic waves which cannot be accurately measured currently, but is effectively damped out when plastic deformation dominates.

Abstract:
Abstract Mode I dynamic delamination fracture was studied with two polymeric fiber reinforced composites. Wedge insertion fracture test on a Kolsky bar (or split Hopkinson pressure bar) apparatus was conducted. A speed about 1,000 m/s of Mode I delamination crack propagation was achieved using high rates of loading. Dynamic fracture and crack propagation were modeled by the finite element method. Dynamic initiation fracture toughnesses of both composites S2/8552 and IM7/977-3 were obtained. For IM7/977-3, dynamic fracture toughness of IM7/977-3 associated with the high speed of propagating crack was examined. It is found that the dynamic fracture toughness of the delamination crack propagating at speed up to 1,000 m/s approximately equals to the dynamic initiation fracture toughness, which is again approximately equal to the static fracture toughness.

Full text
Abstract:
New experimental data on AISI 1045 steel from the NIST pulse-heated Kolsky Bar Laboratory are presented. The material is shown to exhibit a nonequilibrium phase transformation at high strain rate. An interesting feature of these data is that the material has a stiffer response to compressive loading when it has been preheated to a testing temperature that is below the eutectoid temperature using pulse-heating than it does when it has been preheated using a slower heating method. On the other hand, when the material has been pulse-heated to a temperature that exceeds the eutectoid temperature prior to compressive loading on the Kolsky bar, it is shown to exhibit a significant loss of strength. A consequence of this behavior is that fixed-parameter constitutive models, such as the well-known Johnson-Cook model, cannot be used to describe this constitutive response behavior. An argument is made that the phase transition does not occur during high-speed machining operations, and suggestions are made as to how to modify the Johnson-Cook model of Jaspers and Dauzenberg for this material in order to obtain improved temperature predictions in finite-element simulations of high-speed machining processes.

Abstract:
Tässä hankkeessa kerättiin tietoa äärimmäisen voimakkaiden avaruussää-myrskyjen vaikutuksista erilaisiin teknisiin järjestelmiin. Selvitykseen osallistuivat Ilmatieteen laitos, Helsingin yliopisto (HY, Avaruusfysiikan tutkimus) ja Change in Momentum -yritys. Raportissa esitellään laajasta kirjallisuustutkimuksesta kerättyä tietoa voimakkaista myrskyistä ja tietokonesimulaatioiden tuloksia. Raportin loppuosassa käsitellään avaruussäämyrskyihin liittyviä suoria ja välillisiä yhteiskunnallisia riskejä, kuvataan verrokkimaiden kansallisten riskiarvioiden tuloksia jaesitellään varautumisharjoituksiin soveltuva äärimmäisen avaruusmyrskyn skenaario. Kirjallisuustutkimuksessa kiinnitettiin erityistä huomiota avaruus-säämyrskyjen aiheuttamiin ongelmiin sähkönjakelujärjestelmissä niiden laajojen kerrannaisvaikutusten vuoksi. Nopeat vaihtelut Maan magneetti-kentässä synnyttävät jakelujärjestelmiin haitallisia geomagneettisesti indusoituneita (GI) virtoja. Äärimmäisten myrskyjen aikaan saattaa esiintyä jopa kolme kertaa suurempia magneettikentän aikaderivaattoja Euroopassa mitattuihin arvoihin verrattuna. Haittavaikutuksille altis alue ulottuu Keski- ja Etelä-Eurooppaan asti. Meidän tulee siis varautua myrskyjen aiheuttamiin välillisiin vaikutuksiin esim. kansainvälisten toimitusketjujen ongelmien seurauksena, vaikka Suomen sähkönjakelujärjestelmän GI-virtojen sietokyvyn tiedetään olevan hyvä. Koska geomagneettisia myrskyjä riittävän tarkasti kuvaavat aikasarjat ovat verrattain lyhyitä (<150 vuotta), tilastollisissa arvioissa esiintymistodennäköisyyksille esiintyy vielä paljon vaihtelua. Kirjallisuudessa annetut arviot yleisesti vertailukohteena käytetyn vuoden 1859 Carrington-myrskyn kaltaisen ääritapahtuman todennäköisyy-delle seuraavan 10 vuoden sisällä vaihtelevat välillä 0,5–20 %. Hankkeessa testattiin ensimmäistä kertaa Helsingin yliopiston Vlasiator-simulaatiota avaruussäämyrskyjen mallinnuksessa erityisesti satelliittien toimintaympäristöön liittyen. Suurteholaskentaa vaativa Vlasiator on maailman ainoa mallinnustyökalu, joka kattaa koko lähiavaruuden ja kuvaa tarkasti avaruusplasman ionien vaikutuksen myrskyjen kehittymiseen. Simulaatiot osoittivat, että äärimmäisten myrskyjen aikaan geostationaariset ja navigointi-satelliitit menettävät ajoittain magnetosfäärin antaman suojan Auringon hiukkaspurkauksia vastaan. Geostationaaristen satelliittien hiukkasmittausten perusteella HY:n tutkijat arvioivat myös, että korkeaenergiaisten elektronien vuot saattavat olla äärimmäisissä tilanteissa 1–3 kertaluokkaa suuremmat kuin aiempien myrskyjen aikana mitatut satelliittiteknologialle ongelmia aiheuttaneet vuot. Tässä hankkeessa vuosina 2021–2022 tehtyjä Vlasiatorajoja ja muuta tutkimustyötä tarkennetaan ja laajennetaan Suomen Akatemian rahoittamassa “Preparing for the most extreme space weather” -hankeessa vuosina 2020–2023.
