Abstract:

Abstract When portraits taken under various illuminants are placed together, they appear disparate from each other due to observers’ chromatic adaption to each portrait locally. Because the human perception has strong attachment to the memory color of human skin, it may cause an affective effect. This study intends to identify the affective effect of viewing multiple number of portraits whose white balance are not aligned. A visual assessment was conveyed, where portraits from different sources were matched. To simulate various illuminant conditions, three alterations of white balance were prepared for each portrait-warm (3000 K), neutral (6500 K), and cool tones (8000 K). This makes nine combinations for each stimulus. In Study I, 31 Korean college students were presented with a random one by one combination. Based on their subjective judgments on five criteria—authenticity, naturalness, professionality, content conveyance, and overall satisfaction—a statistical analysis was performed. In Study II, a creative writing session was followed in that the participants presumed the message of the portrait matches, and the content analysis was conducted. The results showed that a match of neutrally balanced portraits best appealed authentic and professional styles while minimizing any affective bias. When matches consisted of contrasting tones, on the other hand, they delivered content conveyance better while sacrificing naturalness of portraits. The white balance is limited to three types though this study provides evidence that it is a matter of choice to align, adjust, or alter the white balance of multi-sourced portraits depending on the aiming affective effect.

Abstract:

This paper explored the marriage migrant mothers’ experiences of parenting bi-ethnic children in South Korea based on the concepts of ethnic socialization and intersectionality. We analyzed in-depth interviews of 22 marriage migrant women from Vietnam residing in the capital region of South Korea. They had at least one child whose biological father is Korean. Children were 5 years old or older, attending preschool or elementary school. Five types of bi-ethnic socialization strategies were identified, which provide portraits of different situations in which marriage migrant women were placed. The five strategies that emerged from the data were 1) “Natural practice of bi-ethnic socialization” including two heterogeneous groups, “Coexistence of two cultures” and “Mixture of two cultures”, 2) “Active practice of bi-ethnic socialization”, 3) “Struggling practice of bi-ethnic socialization”, 4) “Silence on bi-ethnic socialization”, and 5) “Suppressed bi-ethnic socialization”. The strategies of bi-ethnic socialization that marriage migrant women chose to raise their children reflected personal perceptions of Korean society and individual ethnic identity formed within Korean society. This study complements existing research on ethnic socialization by examining how ethnic socialization practices are shaped by multiple contexts marriage migrant women embedded in Korean society.

Abstract:

Abstract This paper offers a close reading of interdisciplinary visual artist kate-hers rhee’s The Multiverse Portraits (2015–2016), a multimedia installation that incorporates photography and drawing in its speculative representation of rhee’s body across imagined parallel universes. I analyze the ways in which rhee appropriates ethnographic tropes and methods as an embodied mode of diasporic critique. By tracing the spectre and spectacle of artificiality and monstrosity that haunt the plastic Korean woman and the “inauthentic,” transracially adopted Korean in The Multiverse Portraits, this paper considers the possibility for diasporic visual art to restage notions of beauty and belonging in terms of illegibility, unruliness, and refusal. This paper animates an alternative genealogy of beauty that demonstrates how the enduring afterlives of the Cold War and US militarism produce monstrous bodies and histories that ultimately transgress the very promise and fantasy of assimilatory inclusion and transnational kinship.

Abstract:

Several research papers have been published in Korean literature and folklore about the “Rebellion of Lee Mong-Hak,” which was suppressed for Cheongnan-Gongsin, including General Lim Deuk-Euy, but research on General Lim Deuk-Euy has not been conducted academically. After Lim Deuk-Euy portrait was donated to the Chungnam History Museum, basic research on the Cheongnan-Gongsin was conducted, including a special exhibition in 2007 and a history documentary production (Daejeon KBS) in 2008 and an academic research service for Lim Deuk-Euy general cemetery maintenance (Hongseong-gun). However, there was no in-depth academic paper. In 2015, there was a simple research presentation data, and in 2017, a degree thesis and academic thesis were published by Lim Soon-hwan, a descendant of General Lim Deuk Euy In addition, General Lim Deuk-Euy appearance in the academic world is only one example of the “Portrait of Lim Deuk-Euy” among dozens or 100 portraits of the research subjects in the art history field studying portraits (Gongsinsang) of the Joseon Dynasty. This paper introduces the ruins related to General Lim Deuk-Euy by period or connection, followed by how the remains of Hongseong area (Seoboo-myeon) have been preserved and maintained and developed since the 2000s. And it is a simple suggestion on how to proceed to utilize the remains of Lim Deuk-Euy general in the future.

Abstract:

This study explores the aspects of psychological conflict and alienation experienced by a returned adoptee due to language and cultural differences in the home country in Jane Jeong Trenka’s Fugitive Visions. Fugitive Visions shows how Trenka, who finally moved to Korea after visiting Korea several times and lives in Seoul, cannot be absorbed into Korean society as she is neither a foreigner nor a Jaemigyopo. Trenka believes that the reason is the difference in language and culture. Ironically, the distance from their home country cannot be close due to limitations in communication and a heterogeneous culture. Also, Fugitive Visions goes beyond the personal history of an overseas adoptee and talks about Korea’s past, present, and future by reflecting on the self-portraits of other returned adoptees who have become parts of the evidence of Korean history. Overseas adoption should not be ignored. When we remember it and accept returned adoptees as members of our society, a multicultural educational foundation can be settled for realizing the ultimate transnationalism we pursue. In addition, English education that deals with literary texts showing various aspects of multiculturalism can have educational implications in broadening understanding of other cultures and listening to minority voices.

Abstract:

The whole panel industry has been impacted profoundly by global recession from 2007 to 2009, and the TFT–LCD industry is not an exception. Currently, the major TFT–LCD manufacturers cluster in South Korea, Taiwan and Japan, which totally contribute more than 80% sales in global market. All these TFT–LCD manufacturers face the five industry characteristics, including intensive capital, intensive technology, short product life cycle and fast technology advancement, fluctuating prices easily influenced by market demand/supply and business cycle, and international collaboration. In view of rapid growth of global demand, TFT–LCD manufacturers face a tremendous competition environment. Therefore, how to configure the best resource allocation and create more profits tend to be an essential issue for the managers of TFT–LCD industry. This paper employs improved DEA and VIKOR to evaluate the dynamic operation performances for TFT–LCD manufacturers in Taiwan, South Korea and Japan from 2002 to 2009. Research results show that South Korean firms have relatively better stable operation performances, while the performance of the firms in Taiwan and Japan are relatively worse and varied over time. After referring to the disclosure statements and industrial experts' opinions, this paper also portraits the reason of Sony with great performance in 2007 was resulted from the sales boost of high-level touch panels which leads to 50% high gross profit ratio and rapidly increasing pre-tax profit in 2007. As a result, how to develop high-level or multi-function panels might be an essential issue for the TFT–LCD manufacturers in Taiwan.

Abstract: This article examines the works of Kim Yujeong as a contemporary response to Ikaino literature, a subgenre of Zainichi Korean literature that flourished from the 1950s–1980s. Ikaino is the old name of the neighborhood of Osaka that was and remains the area of Japan with the largest population of Zainichi Koreans. Ikaino’s origins as a settlement of Korean migrant laborers in the 1920s and its official erasure from Osaka city maps in 1973 have often been mythologized within Zainichi Korean fiction and poetry. I read Kim Yujeong’s short stories “Tanpopo” (2000), “Murasame” (2002), and “Tamayura” (2015), which feature working women protagonists traversing Ikaino’s borders, as contemporary works of Ikaino literature that interrogate the Zainichi community’s cultural and historical understandings of the entangled geographies of Japan and the two Koreas. I argue that Kim portrays Ikaino landscapes as spaces constituted through their residents’ collective imaginings of Jeju Island and North Korea. Kim also subverts our expectations of multilingualism in Zainichi literature through the use of local dialect in her representation of Japanese residents of Ikaino. Throughout her work, she seeks to both shed light on the multiple structures of oppression that face Zainichi women living in the Ikaino area today, and critique the way those women have been represented in prior works of Zainichi literature.

Abstract:

Although social awareness of the importance of well-dying has increased, empirical evidence for well-dying policies and programs is very scarce. Additionally, there is limited research examining whether perceptions about dying well vary by the types of end-of-life preparation. Accordingly, this study sought to classify the end-of-life preparation among older Korean adults and verify differences in perceptions about well-dying according to subgroups. For this, older Korean adults aged 65 and above who participated in ‘2020 National Survey of Older Koreans’ were analyzed by dividing them into three groups: 5,977 young-old adults (65-74 years old), 3,333 old-old adults (75-84 years old), and 610 oldest-old adults (85 years old and above). End-of-life preparation was measured by four questions in the ritual aspect (e.g., preparing shrouds or funeral portraits), two questions in the psycho-social aspect (e.g., attending educational programs and writing a will), and two questions in the medical aspect (e.g., writing advance directives and pledging to donate organs). Perceptions about well-dying were measured using four items, assessing the importance of dying autonomously, without pain, in the company of family and acquaintances, and without burdening those around them. For statistical analysis, a three-stage latent class analysis and difference test which accounted for classification errors were conducted. As a result of the analysis, the young-old adults were classified into the ‘active preparation’ group, which showed a relatively active level of preparation, and the ‘no preparation’ group, which lacked preparation for end-of-life in all dimen sion s. The old-old and oldest-old adults were classified into the ‘active preparation’ group and the ‘passive preparation’ group, which was limited to end-of-life preparation only in the ritual aspect. In particular, the proportion of the ‘active preparation’ group in all generations was very low, ranging from 3 to 6%. The results of the difference test on perceptions of well-dying showed that among the young-old an d old-old adults classified into the ‘active preparation’ group, the scores for the importance of each item were significantly lower compared to those of the ‘no preparation’ or the ‘passive preparation’ groups. Among the oldest-old adults, the ‘active preparation’ group regarded end-of-life companionship with family and acquaintances as less important than the ‘passive preparation’ group. The results of this study suggest that the level of end-of-life preparation among older adults in Korea, from young-old to oldest-old, remains low and is predominantly focused on the ritual aspect. Furthermore, perceptions about well-dying vary according to the types of end-of-life preparation. The findings of this study underscore the need for tailored approaches in well-dying policies and programs, such as end-of-life preparation education, that consider the heterogeneity within the older population.

Abstract:

This study analyzes the deep sentiments for Korea expressed in <Go-Hyang>(Ancestral Home, 1994), a piano solo piece by David Burge, a pioneer of contemporary American music in the late 20th century. In this 6-movement work, quotation of Korean folk song and imitation of the folk rhythm allude to the wartime Korea. He portrays his lifelong friendships with Koreans through frequently interrupted melodies, linear progressions and nuances of soft dynamics, while chromatic harmonies, cluster, and poly-rhythm express Burge's identity as a contemporary composer. His relationship with Korea- his 'ancestral home' in heart, and his conflict and embrace of foreign culture noted in the autobiographical novel, ｢Vanishing Spring｣, manifest as warm timbre of dissonance and imitation techniques. Created from cultural understanding and personal experience, <Go-Hyang> is a work that sublimates the embrace of conflicting cultures into music beyond the fusion of Eastern and Western music.

Abstract:

Queen Min (1851-1895) is described in numerous texts including diaries and newspaper articles written by Western, Japanese and Korean authors who lived in Korea between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. However, she is without visual identity, i.e., facial identity, even though King Kojong (1864-1907) referred to the existence of a portrait. This article holds that visual and non-visual identities are complementary to a person. It argues that in the case of Queen Min, the missing visual record generates a de-personification of her identity and that this contributes to the tarnishing of her public and private role in the period prior to Japan’s annexation of Korea. The paper also discusses the history of the queen’s visual identity, which is missing from official history, and inquires into its significance.

Abstract:

Shim No-sung's Namcheonilrok , the subject of this study, is a vast amount of diary literature written every day for five years from the day of his exile as Gijang. However, beyond the general categories that the diary genre can handle, multiple historical, geographical, philosophical, and literary materials are intertwined vertically and horizontally. This study analyzed the stories that independently existed in the diary (i.e., stories within stories) as literary works created by Shim No-sung, and revealed the characteristics and identity of the stories. The stories that Simnosung witnessed, heard, processed, and completed in Gijang were similar to classical literary genres such as folk tales, virtuous women's tales, fairy tales, and fairy tales. Since what he heard and recorded from the listener's perspective was processed and completed using literary techniques, it can be considered a work that reflects his author's intention. The birth of this kind of narrative literature was due to his exile life, where he found comfort in listening to stories, and his writerly temperament to process and complete them in a literary way. Sim No-sung produced portraits, or character stories, of people who had a direct or indirect influence on his life in exile. Some characters are mentioned several times, and when the references are collected and combined, a single character story is completed, which is the case in Heungsam's portrait painting. The portrait of Heungsam that the reader drew at the first meeting is reversed into a completely opposite portrait at the last meeting. The ability to consistently and persistently record a person in such detail comes from the writer's temperament to explore humanity. Parakho Kim Saeng's character story is a story that strangely combines the scene where the story is made and the nature of the fun of storytelling. Delicious food is prepared with care and enjoyed, while at the same time listening to Kim Saeng's story about his difficult life. The story was made even more vivid by the real-time nature of the gathering, where the people gathered at the event also joined in, asked questions, joked, and had fun. This shares its characteristics with well-processed folk tales.

Abstract:

School violence in South Korea is a pressing issue, surpassing the severity seen in many other countries. In an effort to address this problem, South Korea has turned to various movies and dramas to raise awareness and advocate for the prohibition of school violence. The Glory, a recent popular Korean series on Netflix, delves into the harrowing tale of a victim enduring school violence and seeking retribution. This research aims to dissect how The Glory portrays and sheds light on the issue of school violence, providing a clearer perspective on the current situation of school violence in Korea. Drawing upon cinematic and television dramas, as well as existing literature, this study seeks to gather information and ultimately provide insights into the problem at hand. Through a comprehensive examination, it becomes evident that in Korea, the entrenchment of plutocracy plays a pivotal role in the prevalence of school violence. Korea's economy heavily relies on conglomerate companies, and the nexus between Korean chaebol and the government is undeniable, wielding immeasurable power. Abstract:

Little is known about Korean migrants and their lives in New Zealand. They are likely to be ‘invisible’ in society whereas their population is growing rapidly. This paper describes who they are, how their family ties are reshaped, and what is going on in their community. Data were collected from a mixed method study utilising both qualitative and quantitative investigations. The findings of the study show that the Korean population is diverse despite the homogeneous portrait of it in New Zealand. The lifestyles of Korean migrants are likely to be ‘transnational’ between the homeland and the host society, and their family relationships are necessarily across the two nations. The Korean community plays a vital role as a catalyst to stimulate interactions with people, products and ideas within the migration context. The transnationality of the Korean population has become vividly apparent, coupled with the development of information and communication technologies. It is suggested that social work with contemporary migrants requires an understanding of the nature of transnational- ity that significantly affects migrant individuals, their families and communities.

Abstract In the early twentieth century, the political environments of China, Japan, and Korea were heterogeneous, encompassing various discourses and orientations. Using biographies of George Washington, this article examines the particularities of the texts created through such translations. In relay translations of biographies of Washington, Fukuyama Yoshiharu 福山義春 (Japanese, published 1900) sought an ideal model of Confucian ethics; Ding Jin 丁錦 (Chinese, published 1903) represented Washington as a strong warrior who won independence after a long fight; and Yi Haejo 李海朝 (Korean, published 1908) offered a portrait in which the warrior figure recedes and the Confucian image is again reinforced. Despite the gap between the political environments of Japan and Korea and the absence of a direct connection between them, Fukuyama's and Yi's editions share more overlapping features with each other than with Ding's. Properly recognizing and highlighting individual translation and adaptation practices that do not converge on the norms of national discourse will expand the horizons of the national discourse itself.

This thesis is a study on the lconic features and changing process of portraits of Samyeong Yujeong in the late Joseon Dynasty. Samyeong Yujeong is the best disciple of Cheonghe Huejeong, during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592, he participated in various activities. He is a loyalist in Joseon royal family and a representative of Buddhist society in the late Joseon, and has received positive reviews from future generations. In the early 18th century, Joseon royal family supported Taeheo Nambung to rebuild Miryang Pyochoongsa shrine, a Confucian shrine given its name by the king and the place for Confucian rite to enshrine Yujeong, and distributed Shin, Yu-han’s publication 『Bunchungseonanrok』 to various places. In Miryang Pyochoongsa shrine, a portrait necessary for Yujeong’s Confucian rites was painted, which served as an opportunity for the explosive creation of Yujeong’s portraits in various temples in later generations.</br>The portraits of Samyeong Yujeong were depicted in various forms based on the records that he grew beards and moustaches In the early days, various attempts were made, such as being described as practitioner with the beards and moustaches influenced by traditional Nahando, or appearing as monk general through the beards and moustaches of heavenly kings or ten kings of hell, and wrinkles between the eyes. in the mid-term, the method of describing the beards and moustaches like heavenly kings or ten kings of hell became the mainstream, and actively emphasized the appearance of the monk general Yujeong, such as recording or exaggerating Yujeong’s position at that time in painting inscriptions. this trend continued in the late 19th century, but after the 20th century, the beards and moustaches similar to folk beliefs such as Guan-Yu or mountain gods. this aspect expressed Yujeong like a god along with various elements of folk painting, and extremely exaggerated painting inscriptions influenced by the perception of people in late Joseon Dynasty.

Abstract:

This paper analyzes literary works that allow one to trace the changes in the perception of shaman cult in various periods of Korean social development and sheds light on the popularity of shaman motive in the 21st century. In Kim Tonni’s “Portrait of a shaman” (1936), the conflict between traditional and Western beliefs is shown through the image of a shaman woman symbolizing the ignorant Korean past and her son who converted to Christianity. Han Seungwon in his novels, uses the motive of the call for blood of those people possessed by ghosts and describes shamans’ life, traditions, and rituals. Shaman rituals are also described in the works of Park Wanseo. In her childhood memories, shaman women are depicted as transcendental beings tied to the other world. Epic novels by Park Kyongni, Cho Chongnae, Choi Myunghee describe the life of ordinary villagers against the backdrop of historical events. The main character is usually a shaman or her daughter in a love relationship. Shaman motive is also present in some novels written in the 21st century, in which main characters believe in spirits and shamans’ prophecies coming true. This implies that the belief in spirits is an inseparable part of Korean cultural identification, even for those who claim to be an atheist. Because shamanism in Korea is perceived as an important part of culture, the interest in shamans and shamanism continues to grow.

‘The portraits of disease’ explores the link between the symbolic use of diseases and the propagation of ideologies. It traces the origins of the term ‘Sick Man of Asia’ back to British newspapers in the mid-eighteenth century and its development into a metaphor for actual pathogens. The author contends that coloniality and pathogens share similarities, as both are highly transmissible and cannot be seen with the naked eye. The text also examines the influence of German-influenced microbiological research in the Japanese Empire on the expansion of public health methods and institutions in Taiwan, Korea and north-eastern China. This study calls for a broader conversation about the intersections between science, ideology and power in our contemporary global context.

Abstract: The representation of environmental injustice in Heinz Insu Fenkl's novel Memories of My Ghost Brother (1996) has yet to be examined. This neglect suggests a need to open up the dialogue between Fenkl's work, which is relatively invisible beyond Asian American and postcolonial studies, and ecocriticism. Memories of My Ghost Brother shows that the impoverished, noxious, and dangerous conditions and pervasive diseases in Korean camptowns are socially engineered by the United States-Republic of Korea neocolonial system that on the one hand disregards camptowns' infrastructural needs and on the other hand allows the US military to wreak environmental damage with impunity. Specifically, the novel portrays pervasive dust, flooding sewage, the noise from US military activities, and the dangerous live ammunition left by the US military after their training. Without reducing camptown residents to mere victims, the novel also depicts the survival strategies they have adopted. The novel further situates camptowns within the context of the ongoing environmental atrocities committed by the US military across Asia. Fenkl's depictions of the dire situation in camptowns and the toxic legacies from the atomic bomb and Agent Orange challenge the narrative of American benevolence in Korea.

The charge given to a nation’s free press in informing the public of the world around them is immense and essential to a functioning democratic society. A free press functions optimally when it operates independent from the constraining influence of powerful entities within its government, thus, allowing it to fulfil its role as an independent check on government action. As events unfold overseas, papers fill various columns with what is deemed “newsworthy.” If and how these unfolding events are reported back to the public carries tremendous weight in helping to form public opinion that either supports, opposes, or remains indifferent to the policy that governments implement abroad. The boardrooms of a nation’s leading news outlets are filled with individuals who also possess the ability to significantly counter or reinforce government claims concerning the relevance, consequences, or threats encompassed within overseas developments; from their leading headlines splashed across page one to the very wording used to depict a particular event. These abilities, when combined, allow a nation’s media to exert substantial influence on constraining or expanding decision-making options for policymakers who wish to garner public support or avoid potential public backlash. This paper will examine how this influence was exercised within U.S. society and its three leading news sources (The New York Times, Washington Post, and Chicago Tribune) in the reporting of four significant events: the 1960 Sharpeville Massacre in apartheid South Africa, the 1975 Indonesian invasion of East Timor, the Kwangju Massacre of 1980 in South Korea, and the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. The goal of this paper is to recount the historic role the U.S. media has played in its telling of developing international events, and determine whether it has fulfilled its duty to inform the public with the impartiality it lays claim to or whether, at times, it simply mirrors the foreign policy agenda of a particular administration and operates in a manner as to ensure its successful implementation.

This paper presents a portrait of a Korean woman Wonmahn (pseudonym) who engaged in Won Buddhist religious life including Mind Practice. Mind Practice allows the participant to reflect on one’s own state of mind and observe how it triggers other emotions, feelings, or effects in human relationships and in relation to facing troubles in everyday life. We try to understand how her Mind Practice affected her inner states of mind, feelings, attitudes etc. more deeply based on the “Participant as Ally - Essentialist Portraiture” approach. The in-depth interviews were conducted 6 times between the fall of 2011 and 2013. We tried to find out significant passages of transcripts and then articulate them on her ways of evolving to inner maturity through Mind Practice activities. This portrait illustrates her nature and impression with some alive passages and a timeline for grasping unity or oneness of the whole person. Also she repeatedly tried to be aware of her own mind states whenever she encounter troublesome situations in order to become a better person revealing higher aspects. In this portrait, we explore that such “higher aspects” are related with her values, commitments or inner changes as a whole person. Further we try to understand that her higher aspects are manifested as a “subtle and pervasive inner consciousness” in a person.

Hsin-hua Primary School, Hsin-hua District, Tainan City, Taiwan, was celebrating its 120th anniversary in 2017. The school was formerly known as the Tavocan branch of Tainan Institute of Japanese, founded in 1898 during the Japanese colonial rule. As part of its commemorative project, it has restored the Ho-an-den, a post-war Japanese period building with slogans on all four walls of the campus. Ho-an-den, commonly known as "imperial portraits Ho-an-den", was a building used to enshrine the portraits of contemporary emperors and empresses in schools and other educational institutions in Japan and its colonies, such as Taiwan and Korea, before the World War II. Although it is called "Imperial Portraits Ho-an-den", in general, except for "Imperial Portraits", A transcript of the imperial descript on education, the highest philosophy of education in pre-war Japan, will also be included. This Ho-an-den is one of the only two remaining in Taiwan. It is an important testimony of the Japanese rulers' emphasis on "emperor system" education. Korean dramas are increasingly in demand in Indonesia. Its themes related to gender and sexuality are now in great demand, because the issue of gender inequality is increasingly being voiced in South Korea and Indonesia. One of the most talked about dramas in Indonesia when broadcasted was Mr. Queen by TVN (South Korean cable TV channel) in 2020. The drama consists of twenty episodes and can be watched by global fans through video on demand platform Viu, on smartphone and pc. There is even a version that has been dubbed in Indonesian, showing that the drama is very popular within the Indonesian audience. Mr. Queen is a Saeguk (drama set in the Joseon era) and is a remake of the popular Chinese web drama Go Princess Go (2015), which is an adaptation of the novel of the same title. Mr. Queen–like Go Princess Go–can be categorized in the genre of fusion and gender bender, because it tells the story of a male chef named Jang Bong Hwan from the Modern era whose soul crosses space and time until he entered the body of the Queen in the Joseon period (Queen Cheorin), presenting a new depiction of the queen; instead of the traditional feminine queen, Queen Cheorin portrays a masculine woman. Mr. Queen overturns gender and its relation to gender discourse in South Korea. However, using Sara Mills' critical discourse analysis, it is evident that the gender representation in Mr. Queen is paradoxical; as if offering a gender discourse that breaks the dominant discourse, but in fact it still represents woman as passive subject who continues to be exploited.

This study investigates the ideological implications of Real Men, a Korean reality show that portrays the experiences of celebrities who join the military as new conscripts. We situate the popularity of Real Men in the context of the changing gender geography of Korea. Through an analysis of the official Real Men online bulletin board, we explore how the male audience’s discourses regarding the authentic military experience and ideal soldiers are related to their desire to restore hegemonic masculinity. Our findings suggest that Real Men became a vehicle that was used to demand women’s appreciation of the difficult work of men in the military. A desire to be symbolically remunerated for military service involved the positioning of women as primary caregivers who fulfill traditional female roles. By calling for the restoration of traditional gender roles, the male viewers attempted to recover the hegemonic masculinity that they perceived to be under threat from changing gender relations.

This article analyzes the current status and varied aspects of Korean atomic bomb literature, which portrays the harm suffered by Korean atomic bomb victims in August 1945, and examines how discrimination against Korean atomic bomb victims was expressed in literary works. It also cites Japanese atomic bomb literature and shows that this same discrimination is present there, in doing so presenting both its similarities and differences with Korean works. According to Korean atomic bomb literature, the harm incurred by Korean victims of the atomic bomb and that of Japanese people is completely different. In particular, the paper looks at the ways in which Korean atomic bomb victims in Hiroshima and Nagasaki were discriminated against before and after the bombing through the identification of keywords [e.g., crows, AIGO (Oh my!), Omoni (Mother)] in Korean and Japanese atomic bomb novels and poems. In this process, it became clear that these keywords are used both in Korean atomic bomb literature and in some Japanese literature to convey discrimination against Korean atomic bomb victims and the cruelty inflicted by the use of the atomic bomb.

Tamil is one of the ancient languages which has an oldest extant literature. It is one of the longest surviving Dravidian languages dated from 300 BC. Korean is the native language for about 80 million people all over the world. Modern Korean was developed by King Sejong the Great in the 15th century. While analyzing the Tamil and Korean scripts, there was a certain amount of similarity in both text and grammar of these two languages. Despite the geographical separation of these two peninsulas, they share a considerable extent of literature and cultural resemblance. Hence, this proposed work provides a proof for the similarity with the help of a theoretical research study. This work portrays a list of words taken from Korean and Tamil Literature as samples and classifies them as complete or partial based on their similarity. It also lists verbs which after conjugation have a lexical similarity.

Hanaan, an Uzbek and Korean co-production, is the debut film of a young Central Asian Korean director, Ruslan Pak, who wrote the script and directed its production. Pak is a fourth-generation descendant of Korean diaspora forcibly relocated by Stalin in 1937 to populate the Soviet Central Asian republics. In Hanaan, Pak portrays how the post-Soviet generation of Korean diaspora is coping with life in post-Soviet Uzbekistan that has built ethnic-based national identity since Independence. As the film shows, it is not easy for the protagonist Stas and his Korean friends to find their places in their imposed homeland. It is therefore not so surprising that they face many conflicts and challenges that reveal not only social problems in Uzbekistan, including drug issues and ethnic minority problems, but also difficulties in self-identification. Searching for an identity “at a margin” and “as a marginalized” is one of the central themes of this film. In this case which follows Stas’s (as well as the director’s) desperate journey to Hanaan or “the Land of Promise,” I will explore the present situation of the Korean diaspora in Uzbekistan and engage with the messages that the director attempts to convey through this film.
