Abstract:
This study aims to analyze a phenomenal song entitled “Baby Shark” composed by the Pinkfong, a South Korean media startup. The song has become viral over children and adults alike. This research is undertaken to find out; the composer’s attitudes, the social relation among the participants, and the context of the situation in the discourse. The object of the study is obtained from the whole lyrics. Then it is analyzed through Appraisals and Critical Discourse Analysis by connecting every single line to the intentional marketing and social context. Finally, the conclusion shows that “Baby Shark” is a song about local wisdom education in Korea. The composer implicitly admires the shark and uses it as metaphor of Korean people mindset. Abstract:
Using the case of female marriage migrants in South Korea, one new immigrant destination hosting the majority of East Asia’s marriage migrants, this article examines the associations between social participation, place of residence, and support network patterns among the six largest migrant groups ( n = 64,972): ethnic Koreans (Korean Chinese) born in China, Vietnamese, Han Chinese from China, and those from the Philippines, Japan, and Cambodia. The results show that both participation in community meetings and membership in non-governmental organizations are significantly associated with more types of Korean support networks and co-ethnic support networks, after controlling for demographics, immigrant characteristics, marital status, health status, perceived discrimination, and ethnicity or country of origin. Using Seoul City as a reference location, those who lived in Jeolla Province were less likely to have support networks composed of Koreans yet were more likely to have support networks of co-ethnics, after holding all other covariates constant. With the identification of significant interactions between marriage migrants’ place of residence and ethnicity, stratified ordered logistic models demonstrate how place of residence matters for marriage migrants of certain ethnicities or countries of origin. In conclusion, this article demonstrates the importance and the benefits of social participation for marriage migrants as a pathway to building support networks of local people and co-ethnics.

Abstract:
Over a few decades, Korean diet has changed from traditional diet, mainly composed of rice and vegetables, to Westernised diet rich, in meat and milk, along with the economic development and globalisation. Increasing prevalence of diet-related chronic diseases such as cancer and metabolic syndrome (MetS) is becoming a heavy burden to society and requires further attention. In this review, the association of meat and milk consumption with cancer and MetS among Koreans was discussed. Previous meta-analyses showed that meat intake was positively associated with increased risk of cancers, especially colon, as well as obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus, and that the intake of milk and dairy products was negatively associated with colorectal cancer, obesity, and type 2 diabetes mellitus, based on studies conducted mostly in Western countries. In Korea and other Asian countries, the association of meat and milk intake with cancers were inconclusive and varied by types of cancers. Conversely, milk intake was negatively associated with MetS risk as reported in Western countries. The difference in results between Korea and Western countries might come from the differences in dietary patterns and study designs. Most Koreans still maintain traditional dietary pattern, although rapid change towards Westernised diet is underway among the younger age group. Randomised clinical trials or prospective cohort studies with consideration of combined effects of various dietary factors in Korea and other Asian countries are needed to elucidate the impact of meat and milk or related dietary patterns in their diet.

Abstract:
Ancient, ornately carved palaces in the midst of a megalopolis, the spirituality of delicate green Koryo celadon, an archaic traditional music as pungent (and delicious) as kimchi – once experienced, never forgotten. Add to these the city of Kyongju, called the ‘museum without walls’, the many reminders of a long history of suffering under Japanese oppression and the uninterrupted excellence of its poetry and visual arts, and one begins to feel Korea's special quality. The country is prosperous; education in all fields, including the arts, is given high priority. Contemporary life is vibrant and intense; the people possess a seemingly boundless capacity for hard work as well as for celebration, festivity, ceremony and mourning – and for music-making. Hardly surprising, then, that the compositional scene in the Republic of South Korea is booming, to say the least.

Abstract:
Although previous studies on human resource management (HRM) research trends in the global context provided very useful information about the structures of HRM research trends, they have critical limitations. Despite the growing contribution and significance of HRM practices in Korea, a dominant group of scholars has rarely focused on what is going on in the research community in the country. To overcome the limitations and fill the gaps found in studies on the global HRM trends, the purpose of this study is to conduct the keyword network analysis investigating the semantic network structure composed of Korean HRM studies. A total of 1158 research papers published by three top peer-reviewed HRM journals in Korea that were published from 2007 to 2018 were analyzed. The result shows that the whole network structure of Korean HRM has a complex semantic structure that is socially constructed. Additionally, this study identified the top 10 prominent keywords and its ego-centric networks, and nine thematic clusters. By adopting keywords network analysis in bibliometric methods, this study provides an accurate structural interpretation of Korean HRM research practice to facilitate the sustainable development of the studies on the global HRM trends.

Abstract:
The scale of damage caused by drought is on the rise in South Korea. The country has been experiencing a 4–6-year cycle of extreme droughts at a nationwide scale. From 2014–2015, South Korea suffered from its worst drought in the past 50 years. This study aims to provide an effective drought management policy by analyzing the Korean government's response to the 2014–2015 drought under the National Drought Management Framework, which is composed of four stages: prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery. The findings indicate that the Korean government effectively addressed the drought, yet there are no measures currently in place to cope with megadroughts that last for more than 5 consecutive years. Immediate attention is required to conduct research and introduce policies that will help in managing megadroughts. This paper takes an interdisciplinary approach to drought preparedness research in the context of megadroughts and proposes an efficient national drought management framework that involves engagement of relevant line ministries.

Full text
Abstract:
The Korean woman composer, Unsuk Chin (b.1961), who received the Grawemeyer Award in 2001, has become increasingly acknowledged as a major voice in Western music. This dissertation examines her six Piano Etudes (1993-2003), including their structure and perforn1ance, in the context of Chin's background. Her Korean upbringing and musical education, her gender and her diasporic life, as well as the remarkable depth of the musical influences upon her, are all considered. Via her Korean teacher, Sukhi Kang, she absorbed the techniques of electronic music and those of extended techniques in instrumental music, while via Ligeti, her later teacher, she absorbed many other influences, including that of Nancarrow's music. Some, like that of Korean music itself, she seems to have gained on her own initiative. However, she claims that the works of Lewis Carroll and Conlon Nancarrow fit into this category, too, despite the overwhelming preoccupation of Ligeti with both of these sources; she also disavows any concerns with being a woman composer, despite her reception's clearly being affected by this. These issues, often puzzling, all . prove worthy of close consideration. The two penultimate chapters are devoted to an analysis of each of the six Piano Etudes; an understanding of their design and achievement is dependent on knowledge of all these background materials. This is followed by a discussion of performance issues in the pieces, which were written, as Chin declares, away from the piano and published in her own script, and which offer immense practical challenges to the performer.

Abstract:
Young Ja Lee (b. 1931) is regarded as one of the most important living female composers in Korea. She leads and contributes to the Korean classical music society as a gifted composer and a dedicated educator. This study focuses on how she has combined Western compositional techniques with elements of Eastern traditional music in some of her compositions, in particular, her Variations pour piano "Umma ya, Nuna ya." An interpretation of her Variations pour piano "Umma ya, Nuna ya" reveals that the composition features many of the particular and sublime aspects of Western compositional techniques in conjunction with traditional Korean music style. This study is an investigation of the interaction and assimilation of these disparate elements. The results of this study may inspire further research into traditional Korean music and bring recognition to important Korean composers, as well as encourage music educators to teach Korean composers' compositions.

Kim, Ji-Hyun. "An Annotated Bibliography of Piano Concertos Written by South Korean Composers in the Twentieth Century." Scholarly Repository, 2008. http://scholarlyrepository.miami.edu/oa_dissertations/27.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to provide a systematic overview of piano concertos written by Korean composers in the Twentieth-Century, using the format of an annotated bibliography. This project is of vital significance for musicians who wish to further expand their knowledge of the repertoire in this genre. In particular, this research serves as an important vehicle for those with a special interest in contemporary works, music by Korean composers, and for those who are looking for a contemporary source outside the scope of the standard piano concerto literature. The study provides commentary on the compositional and performance aspects of each work to serve as guideline for the consideration of professional performers, teachers, and conductors. The essay contains the works of twenty-five piano concertos by twenty-two composers; however, due to the lack of information this study will cover only nineteen piano concertos with compositional features and additional information. Most of the works are unpublished, but were collected through correspondence with the composers, as well as additional information from the Korean National Library of Congress, and online sources. The results of this research are intended to contribute musicological and ethnomusicological documentation of unknown works, repertoire source material for performing musicians, and bibliographic assistance in Korea to document and organize its own cultural output. In Chapter 4, the bibliography is arranged alphabetically by the composer's last name, and each work provides the biography of the composer, date of composition, commission and/or dedication, premiere performance, number and title of movements, duration, publication information, recorded performances, published reviews, composer's comments, and compositional features.

Korea Fantasy is an important work that helped Ahn win international acclaim. Korea Fantasy is an orchestral piece that evolved along with Ahn's unique life experiences shaped by the state of his native country. The piece is programmatic, depicting the history of Korea, which utilizes musical devices, such as rhythms and quotation that are distinctive musical elements of Korea. This document discusses the political and social history of Korea during Ahn's life time, offers an overview of Ahn's education and musical footsteps, and describes the premiere and reception of Korea Fantasy. Moreover, a discussion of his compositional traits and a musical analysis of Korea Fantasy are presented.

Full text
Abstract:
Younghi Pagh-Paan is a female Korean-German composer. Although being a prolific composer, she has only twice composed for piano solo. Pagh-Paan's Mich Drüstet (I Thirst) is a piano solo work and based on the tragedy in Korea, the Jeju 4.3 Incident in 1948. Even though the Jeju 4.3 incident triggered mora than 30,000 casualties, I Thirst is the only music to commemorate the incident, as commissioned by the pianist Kaya Han. This study of I Thirst highlights her musical textures for the piano and elements she employs to express her thoughts about the event; for instance, Korean musical element, 12-tone techniques, and counterpoint. In addition, it addresses the need for the pianist to have background information about Jeju Island and the Incident by matching images with musical sections in order to achieve a deeper interpretation of Pagh-Paan's piano composition.

Choi, Ji Sun. "The Merging of Korean Traditional Music and Western Instrumentation as Exemplified in Four Chamber Works for Piano Composed by Isang Yun." Scholarly Repository, 2007. http://scholarlyrepository.miami.edu/oa_dissertations/8.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to identify and elucidate the unique aspects of Isang Yun's compositional style through in-depth examination of his piano chamber works: Gasa for Violin and Piano, Garak for Flute and Piano, Nore for Cello and Piano and Riul for Clarinet and Piano. Isang Yun (1917-1995), a Korean-born composer, is renowned for having established a compositional language which expresses Eastern thought in music crafted from Western musical elements. He was a pioneer and leader who created new compositional techniques in his efforts to combine Western styles with Korean musical traditions. He achieved international acclaim for his highly developed compositional techniques such as Haupttontechnik (Main-tone Technique) and Hauptklangtechnik (Sound-complex Technique), which modernized and westernized ancient Korean performance practices and native Korean music traditions. Four chamber works for piano by Isang Yun are used to trace the development of his use of twelve-tone technique and Haupttontechnik and to identify the connection between his spiritual philosophies and his music. This essay provides these insights to give the reader a more complete understanding of the life and music of Isang Yun.

Full text
Abstract:
Gideon Gee Bum Kim is an internationally-acclaimed contemporary Korean-Canadian composer. Kim has utilized traditional Korean music with Western composition techniques in some of his works. Kim created his own style by incorporating traditional Korean musical elements such as the scale, rhythmic diversity, syncopation, variation, ornamentation, and the progression of melody into a body of music that is otherwise contemporary and Western. The purpose of this study is to develop a performance guide for Gideon Gee Bum Kim's Kangkangsullae for string trio. Kangkangsullae trio is based on Korean historical, cultural and musical influences. I give a detailed historical and cultural background for this work and demonstrate how Kim integrated Western compositional techniques with traditional Korean music. My emphasis is on defining specific characteristics of traditional Korean music which will provide several points toward understanding Kim's compositional style.

Abstract:
In North Korea, with songs fundamental to ideology and central to cultural production, composers face challenges. How can large-scale pieces for instrumental ensembles and orchestras be composed? This chapter begins by discussing how composition activity developed in North Korea, initially with Japanese and then Soviet influence. It considers key early compositions that are no longer acceptable for performance in North Korea. It then shows how early, Japanese-colonial-era popular song structures were upscaled to create symphonic poems, and, from these, how combining the songs and interpretations of the dramatic action of revolutionary operas allowed these to be upscaled into symphonic works. The focus then shifts to the avant-garde composer Isang Yun (1917–1995), who was the best-known Korean composer of the twentieth century in international circles. Yun, after being forced to return to South Korea from Germany and being tried for sedition, was latterly celebrated in North Korea, and his story became the subject of four feature-length films made in Pyongyang. The chapter analyzes three of his most political works to explain why, despite his celebrity, his musical style was never fully acceptable to North Korea, and how he failed to fully embrace the socialist realism frame that North Korean ideology required.

The Korea–China–Japan Investment Promotion, Facilitation and Protection Agreement is the first treaty in the economic field that binds the three Northeast Asian countries together under a single legal instrument. The existence of effective dispute settlement procedures under the treaty will contribute to the creation of a favourable investment climate in the host country. Nevertheless, there have been fears about frivolous or vexatious claims that could inhibit legitimate regulatory actions by governments. How to compose an investment chapter of the Korea–China–Japan FTA that is being negotiated is a pressing demand for all in the region. Any pertinent answers to such a quest require a thorough comparison of the benefits and drawbacks of any development of relevant rules and governance. In the end, a quest for better international investment governance in Northeast Asia in the future requires sound evaluation of lessons from the past and present.

A good jigsaw takes a devotee many hours to assemble. A complex jigsaw can sit for months before it is completed, and a novice will likely only get part way through before abandoning the puzzle. Still, three quarters of a century after the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (hereafter, North Korea) was founded, few accounts of its art, and fewer still of its music and dance, have seen the light of day. In respect to music and dance, like a jigsaw puzzle just begun, it would be a big ask to expect a single volume to provide a full account, slotting everything into place from the first to last piece. This may seem a defensive position to take in my opening paragraph, but commentators who write about North Korea routinely point out that they are attempting to read tea leaves, as the available data is partial, incomplete, and often contradictory. An archive may hold just one or two of what should be a series of volumes. Some records that ought to be present have disappeared from official accounts. Some composers, singers, groups, and musical activities are forgotten—that is, until someone unexpectedly stumbles on a dusty and previously unknown old text....

Abstract:
Chapter 1 explores key songs to establish the formative issues and political ideologies of North Korea, from the beginnings of the creation of official history, through the notion of “popular,” to the 1960s, by which time cultural production was being brought into line with the juche ideology of “self-reliance” and the Ch’ŏllima unitary system of work under the cult of the paramount leader, Kim Il Sung. It looks at Soviet and Chinese influence on song production, and at the legacy of Japanese colonialism, as well as the factionalism that was rife among artists in Pyongyang. The chapter explores how a national identity was established in which folk songs were the foundation, though folk songs were remodeled, removing local particularity but accommodating the lyrical style of professional renditions to create a characteristic vocal style known as the juche voice, and censoring or adjusting lyrics to comply with ideology. Key song composers are introduced, distinguishing “songs of the people” from “songs for the people,” and discussing “revolutionary songs” and “immortal songs.”

Abstract:
Abstract.—The Japanese eel, Anguilla japonica, is an important food fish in East Asia, and catches of glass eels and of eels in freshwater appear to have declined dramatically in recent decades, causing increasing concern for the health of wild stocks. During that time, research efforts to understand its biology have progressed considerably. The spawning area was successfully outlined to the west of the Mariana Islands in 1991, and other research suggests that their recruitment success may be related to El Niño events, which appear to affect the transfer of leptocephali from the north equatorial current into the Kuroshio Current. Otolith microstructure and microchemistry studies have revealed various aspects of their early life history that relate to their oceanic larval migration. The discovery of sea eels that live in marine habitats without entering freshwater may change the common understanding of freshwater eel ecology and affect management plans. Most genetic studies suggest that the Japanese eel is composed of a single panmictic population throughout East Asia. Therefore, international management is needed among the countries of China, Taiwan, Korea, and Japan, where glass eels recruit from a common stock and are used extensively for aquaculture.

Abstract:
Saiyad Sultān’s narratological innovation of a Hindu prehistory to the traditional Islamic prophets is examined in this chapter. Saiyad Sultān reconstitutes Islamic prophetology to include Hindu divinities and sacred texts, tacitly enlarging the qurʾānic category of People of the Book to embrace the Hindus of Bengal. After the creation of Nūr Muhammad, specific Hindu deities, identifiable as Śiva and various avatāras of Viṣṇu, make their advent to eradicate evil from the earth. Their failure to reform their communities brings forth Ādam, and after him the line of Islamic prophets, culminating with the Prophet of Islam. One concern of this chapter is to demonstrate Sultān’s reliance upon various Perso-Arabic sources of the Tales of the Prophets (Qiṣaṣ al-anbiyāʾ) genre. Through analysis of Sultān’s portrayal of Ādam, Śīś (i.e., Shīth/Seth), and Iblīs, the chapter also highlights narratological features that exemplify how the author composes a “Purāṇa-Korān” salvation history for Bengal.

Abstract:
In Korea, the nuclear power generation is grown technically well. Already, 20 nuclear reactors are operated, and approximate they supply the 40% of whole the consumption of electric power. This is the driving force of Korean industrial development. Besides, Korean Standard Nuclear Power Plant that was developed by Korean self-technique with nuclear plant technique independence, Ul-Chin 6 has started the commercial operation. Advanced Korean Standard Nuclear Power Plant, new Gori 1, 2 constructions are commenced. But, past days Korean situation is that intention of residents is neglected in the decision making process of nuclear power plant construction and operation. In existing decision making process, it is regarded as the role of public opinion is secondary, and the problem of decision making process is that public is persuaded and believed. So, in decision making process, the public opinion is considered restrictively, there is not the actual public participation. Therefore the dissatisfaction of public is increased continuously, and in Korea, bad recognition about nuclear power is getting full. The method of public participation for complement of this problem is public hearing or ombudsman system. The public hearing is ensuring public participation before decision of a case, and ombudsman is the system that elevates the public satisfaction through continuous feedback of public requirement to occur in deciding and performing the matters. In Korean situation, that present 20 nuclear reactors are operated and also the place of radioactive waste repository has been decided, not only the introduction of public hearing to decide the coming matter but also the operation of ombudsman system to continuously correct and collect the public requirements about the matter to already decided and operated is necessary. In Korea, administration type ombudsman is operated now. But, it has operated without basic element at the aspect of organization, function and phase. So it is not established a firm phase as right relief body to be believed by public with lack of independence, authority and specialty. Therefore the establishment of organization that can be the role as special ombudsman organization about sensitive and special matter like nuclear matter is necessary. Definite establishment element of ombudsman system is to introduce of congress type ombudsman element, to be permanent standing system ombudsman, to limit jurisdiction extent and have strong authority, to be able to access easily, to be composed of legal and nuclear specialist. One of important requirements of resident is compensation. So, based on the resident compensation theory about aversion equipment, ombudsman system should be established introducing the insurance theory through risk management as functional background for appropriate compensation.

Full text
Abstract:
Various cast austenitic stainless steels composed of austenite and ferrite phases are used for primary pressure boundary components such as main coolant loop piping, pump casings and so on in old PWRs. However, these components have been known to experience a loss of fracture toughness caused by thermal aging embrittlement, when exposed to reactor operating temperatures over a long period, that may lead to failure. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the major component status, thermal aging embrittlement susceptibility, material property change determination, flaw evaluation methods, case studies considering the thermal aging embrittlement phenomenon and future plan of Korean industry. The tentative results showed that the thermal aging embrittlement is a plausible age-related degradation mechanism, thereby its effects should be managed adequately in order to sustain the integrity of the corresponding components.

Full text
Abstract:
Three supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2) power cycle experimental loops have been developed in Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER) from 2013. As the first step, a 10 kWe-class simple un-recuperated Brayton power cycle experimental loop was designed and manufactured to test its feasibility. A 12.6 kWe hermetic turbine-alternator-compressor (TAC) unit which is composed of a centrifugal compressor, a radial turbine and the gas foil bearings was manufactured. The turbine inlet design temperature and pressure were 180 °C and 130 bar, respectively. Preliminary operation was successful at 30,000 RPM which all states of the cycle existed in the supercritical region. Second, a multi-purpose 1 kW-class test loop which operates as a transcritical cycle at a temperature of 200 °C was developed to concentrate on the characteristics of the cycle, control and stability issues of the cycle. A high-speed turbo-generator was developed which is composed of a radial turbine with a partial admission nozzle and the commercial oil-lubricated angular contact ball bearings. Finally, a 60 kWe-class Brayton cycle is being developed which is composed of two turbines and one compressor to utilize flue-gas waste heat. As the first phase of development, a turbo-generator which is composed of an axial turbine, a mechanical seal and the oil-lubricated tilting-pad bearings was designed and manufactured.

Abstract:
Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) has been developing a conceptual design of the demonstration fast reactor (DFR), which is the pool type sodium cooled fast reactor with the thermal power of 1548.2 MW and the core loaded with metal fuel. The DFR is composed of a Primary Heat Transport System (PHTS), an Intermediate Heat Transport System (IHTS), a Steam Generating System (SGs) and a decay heat removal system (DHRS). The DHRS is composed of 2 units of Passive Decay-heat Removal Circuits (PDRC) and 2 units of Active Decay-heat Removal Circuits (ADRC). The PDRC consists of two independent loops with sodium-to-sodium Decay Heat eXchanger (DHX) and natural-draft sodium-to-Air Heat eXchanger (AHX). The ADRC consists of two independent loops with sodium-to-sodium DHX and Forced-Draft sodium-to-air Heat eXchanger (FDHX) located in the upper region of the reactor building. The PDRC is very different from that of KALIMER-600 on the points of the submerged location and the heat transfer mechanism. For the identification of safety characteristics, 5 DBE’s (Design Bases Events) are analyzed using the MARS-LMR code. The representative DBE’s are TOP (Transient of Over Power), LOF (Loss Of Flow), LOHS (Loss Of Heat Sink), Reactor Vessel Leak and Pipe Break. As a result, it is identified that the DFR were appropriately performed as designed and the temperatures of the fuel and the structure were evaluated to satisfy the criteria.

Abstract:
Korea Electric Power Research Institute (KEPRI) has studied anode-supported planar type SOFCs and cogeneration systems. The cell was composed of NiO-YSZ/YSZ/LSCF and the fabrication process of 10 × 10 cm2 and 15 × 15 cm2 cells was established. KEPRI successfully manufactured and operated a 1 kW class SOFC cogeneration system in 2008. The 1 kW stack was made of 48 cells with 10 × 10 cm2 area and ferritic stainless steel interconnectors. The 1 kW system showed about 1.3 kWDC power with hydrogen and 1.2 kWDC with a city gas under self-sustained operating condition. The system also recuperated heat of about 1.1 kW by making hot water. A 5 kW SOFC system consisted of a hot box part and a cold BOP part for the effective thermal management. The hot box part included 2 sub-module stacks, a fuel reformer, a catalytic combustor and heat exchangers. A sub-module stack was designed to comprise 65 cells with 15 × 15 cm2 area and ferritic stainless steel interconnectors. The system was manufactured and tested using short stacks.

Abstract:
For tritium supply to the fusion reactor of ITER (The Way to New Energy) [1], tritium need to be transported from tritium production sites, mainly the CANDU type reactor sites to the tritium plant building of ITER. Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) was commissioned the work of developing the transport package for tritium by ITER Organization and the first stage of the development has been just finished. The developed package was designed to carry 70 g of tritium and classified as a type B(U) package, which should comply with the requirements stipulated in IAEA Safety Standard Series [2]. The package is composed of a storage vessel, a containment vessel, an overpack and an aluminum liner which is a unique feature of the package. The aluminum liner between the storage vessel and the containment vessel is for containment control under the repetitive use of the package. The package has enough pressure resistance for 5 year in-site storage and the structural and thermal integrity under the hypothetical accident conditions has been demonstrated through a series of analyses.

Full text
Abstract:
A CANDU core is composed of lots of fuel channels of a pressure tube type which creates an independent flow passage different from that of a LWR. Hence, most of the aging effects for a CANDU’s operating performance originate from a crept pressure tube as its operating years proceed. Since the early 1990’s, Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) and Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) have cooperated to develop, verify, and demonstrate an advanced CANDU fuel, called a CANFLEX-NU (CANdu FLEXible-Natural Uranium) fuel, which has been specially designed so as to compensate for a deterioration of the heat transfer rate in a crept pressure tube and also to enhance the safety margin of it by a reduction of the maximum linear element power of a fuel bundle. Now, a CANFLEX-NU fuel is ready to be commercialized in a CANDU-6 because its design and demonstration irradiation have been completed in both of Korea and Canada. Recently, some CANDU plants are being refurbished as they are approaching their life time. One of the refurbished CANDU’s is Wolsong Unit 1 in Korea. It has been operated for 25 years and the operating power at the present time is less than 90% of a full power because of a reduction of the margin for the ROP trip set point. The most appropriate way, up-to now, to overcome such a power de-rating due to a crept pressure tube is the introduction of a CANFLEX-NU fuel into a CANDU. Before commercializing a CANFLEX-NU fuel in the Wolsong Units, it was required to estimate the economic benefit analysis for a CANFLEX-NU fuel in the Wolsong Units because the Uranium price at present is very different from that during the development phase of the CANFLEX-NU fuel. The present paper proposes an economic evaluation model for a CANFLEX-NU fuel in the Wolsong Units and its result for a CANFLEX-NU fuel are compared with that for a 37-element fuel. It was found that the introduction of a CANFLEX-NU fuel into the Wolsong units would have economical benefits due to a better operating performance even where it is assumed that the fuel fabrication cost of a CANFLEX-NU fuel is 1.4 times that of a 37-element fuel. Once the final results are obtained, they will be used as one of important parameters to determine the introduction of a CANFLEX-NU fuel in the Wolsong Units, or not.

Abstract:
In the process of sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR) design, it is very important to verify thermo-hydraulic performance of each component in the sodium environment. In KAERI (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute) STELLA (Sodium Integral Effect Test Loop for Safety Simulation and Assessment) project is under a Mid- and Long-term Nuclear R&D Program. The STELLA project is composed of two stages. In the 1st stage the performance for heat exchangers such as DHX (Decay heat exchanger) and AHX (Air heat exchanger) and for PHTS (Primary heat transport system) mechanical pump will be evaluated. The detailed design of each component is based on that of a 600MWe demonstration reactor. Since full-scale components could not be installed in STELLA-1 [1], the model pump is designed to be scaled-down based on the scaling law. Various pump tests have been done in water environment by using model pump. In this study the design features of model pump were described and the scaling parameters were examined. The results of pump performance tests have been also introduced which is essential to perform safety analysis.

Abstract:
<p>Risk assessment method of vehicle for strong wind on a bridge was developed with consideration of girder shape and wind environment. The method is composed of three steps. In first step, wind tunnel test is performed to estimate aerodynamic coefficients of a vehicle. Coefficients are estimated for every traffic lane on the bridge with consideration of various wind direction. Based on the results, critical wind speed curves of vehicles are calculated through vehicle dynamics analysis. Next step is wind environmental analysis. Utilizing long-term wind data obtained from nearby weather station, wind distribution functions are estimated. As a final step, number of days for traffic control, risk index in this study, is calculated using critical wind speed curves and wind distribution functions. The risk index is obtained not only for main span of the bridge, but also for all side spans or approaches. As a case study, Gwang-an bridge, one of long span bridge in Korea, was evaluated using developed assessment procedure. Risk index was calculated for all sections on the bridge, and mitigation measure was also discussed to ensure the vehicle safety.</p>
